"I don't actually know." Melody said, then a thought hit her. Perhaps she had walked in through the wrong door? Or even the wrong building. Perhaps this intricate looking doorway was not the front door at all. That would mean the main door was more grand than this? She paused for a moment to think of something larger and more intricate than the room she was standing in. Nothing came to mind.

This was so embarrassing. At least this man stated that he liked her, which means she hadn't completely messed up? She beamed at his compliment.

"Do you know where I'm supposed to go?" She asked, hopeful that he'll lead her to the right place.

User ImageJade waited in front of her hotel, standing in a partial en garde position. As she spent nearly half her life standing like this, it felt most natural to her. She tugged at her pants a bit to make it a bit more smooth. Formal clothing made her feel extremely stiff. At least she didn't have to wear a dress.

A large black car pulled up in front of her. The driver rolled down the side window.

"Hey you!" He called out. He had driven her around back when she was still a student at the academy. Although Jade didn't know his name, she was glad that he was the one picking her up.

"Yo, How are you doing?" She called back. "Open the trunk for me will ya?"

"Sure, need help with that?"

"Nope," She answered as she dropped two large fencing bags in the back. Then after slamming the trunk shut, she slid into the back seat. "I'm so glad to see you! Have you been well?"

"Alright, I suppose," The driver answered. "So what brings you back to the Arcane Society?"

"I'm thinking of getting a job there." Jade said. "Sent in my application already. Hopefully they'll consider me."

"Why? What's wrong with your normal job?"

"Nothing, I just feel like I don't fit in anymore now that I can see spirits and no one else can. Besides, they've got better fencers to replace me in the Olympics." She let out a small laugh.

"Well, I bet they sure miss you. From what I've seen, you're the best fencer and teacher out there."

Jade smiled at his compliment. It was kind of him to cheer her up like that. She whispered a small inaudible "thank you."

They talked until they reached the front gate of the academy.
"Well, I've gotta go pick up the others. Don't get in too much trouble okay?" The driver winked at her as she got out of the car and began removing her bags from the trunk.

"I'm amazed you'd even think such a thing." She said back playfully. "Me? Getting in trouble?"

The driver laughed, before giving a final wave and driving away. Jade, now alone, felt a bit nervous. It was like coming home again after being away for years. She wondered how many of the people here she would still know as she dragged her giant bags up to the front of the Academy. Pulling the large heavy doors open, she entered.

Lenka accepted the letter from the driver, her mouth slightly agape as he left the three standing there.

“Condition…weirdo…GREAT. Well, if we get more loonies we’ll be officially considered an asylum” Said Kiwan as he surveyed the new arrival. He winced slightly as an elbow jabbed him in the stomach, “Don’t be rude!” Lenka retorted angrily as she made a mental note to give the letter to her father, she wasn’t sure if it would be appropriate for her to open such a personal document, especially with the sarcastic duo peering at it curiously. “He is from the Van Alen family?” Milos commented interestingly.

“Who would’ve thought.” Said Kiwan, as he continued to gingerly rub the side of his ribcage. “Did you see how fast the driver took off, be honest that’s a bad sign, I bet he was glad to hand the kid over to the Society.” Lowering his voice he added, “I bet you $20 dollars he is as nutty as Doctor Watson.”

“I bet you $40 that you are more jumbled in the brain than him and Watson put together”, Milos chipped in with a mischievous grin. “Eh? I’m sane! Radik had me tested!” Kiwan retorted sourly as if Milos words wounded him. ”I’ll give each of you a heel on the foot if you don’t shut up!” Hissed Lenka as she noted Adrian was approaching.

“Um, hi…hello!” Lenka waved, slightly worried that his attentions may wander. ” My name is Lenka, this is Milos and Kiwan.” Lenka added and pointed to the men at her sides. “How about we step in doors?” Kiwan made a slight snigger, he knew that Lenka thought it would be safer to have the loony inside rather than wandering outside the grounds.

To the three’s own surprise there was a buffet table just inside that had hors d'oeuvres, tasty finger sandwiches, and jugs of various juices and water paired with glass cups. Kiwan’s lips puckered when he noticed there were no alcoholic drinks to be found. But hestarted piling food onto his little china plate nonetheless…he hadn’t eaten breakfast during his trip from the airport to the castle so he was quite famished and they had shrimp, ooohhhh tasty crispy little things still steamy.

Lenka handed Adrian a plate and asked, “Are you hungry?” And then continued, “Sooo…”Lenka started hesitantly as she grabbed a plate for herself…“How about you tell us a little bit about yourself?” Lenka thought it would be nice to start a conversation with Adrian…besides Milos was too busy inspecting the creative arrangement of the food and Kiwan was stuffing his face with shrimp.

The sound of the door opening caught everyone’s attention and they turned around to see who the newcomer was. “Ah! Jade!” Lenka exclaimed, “Welcome back, Constance asked me to relay a message to you. She said that she be able to interview you today after the banquet,” Lenka said brightly. ”I didn’t realize you would be applying for a job here”

Schraeder's initial excitement at finding a child like Melody was quickly dissipating as he realized that she was, in fact, just a lost child that offered him almost no real knowledge or assistance. Still, Schraeder couldn't be too upset, seeing as he was in the same situation. He would just have to bring her along until they both found their destination.

"I don't," he replied, shaking his head slightly and looking around the ornate hall. "Although maybe - " he was cut off by the sound of a large door being opened, and muffled voices from what might be the next room. It was hard to tell; sound carried in this place.

"Come on," he said, gesturing for Melody to follow as he walked further into the foyer. There was a corner to the left, and following the voices, Schraeder took it. After a bit more walking, he and Melody were entering into another large hall with another door. The difference was that there was a woman with a couple of bags, and a handful of younger Cardholders that Schraeder vaguely recognized from his time here previously. He wasn't sure if they would recognize him, though, so he stayed quiet and gestured for Melody to step forward too.

"Lenka!" Jade called out with a little wave. "It's been so long, how are you? And thank you for that message. It was more of a spur of the moment thing. I just found my old job sort of tiring, you know?"

She was just about to greet the others in the room when the door interrupted her.

Schraeder stepped in with a very young woman who she didn't recognize.

"And here comes the elusive king," she said playfully. Although she had met Schraeder before, it was such a brief meeting that she wondered if he remembered her at all. Perhaps her comment had been a little too bold. Jade had heard that the king of swords was highly efficient and may not take kindly to such an announcement.

Pushing that thought to the back of her mind, she turned her attention towards the girl, who seemed quite uneasy standing there in her in blue sun dress. She looked barely twelve. "Poor girl," She thought. The cards made her grow up so fast.

Sticking her arm towards her, she greeted her amicably, "Hello, my name is Jade, what's yours?"

Mel felt a bit upset that this man didn't have any idea where to go either. She wondered where he was leading them. But as the sound of voices got louder, she felt more certain that he was leading them to the right place.

"Thank you!" She said quietly but cheerfully, placing her fingers gently upon his arm. She whispered a quiet blessing that infused him with some energy and happiness. It was how she often thanked her friends of the forest for leading her to a patch of clovers or bushes filled with thick berries. Mel wondered if it was appropriate to thank humans in the same way.

As they stepped into the room, a tall woman, apparently named Jade, announced this man as the King. Mel wondered what she meant by that. Was this man really royalty? Around Jade, Melody felt more shy than ever. She only managed to whisper out her name before hastily stepping moving closer to the "king."

Feeling slightly awkward that she was attaching herself to a person she had just met minutes ago, she scanned around the room looking for other people who were relatively her age. There was a boy standing in the room who was a bit older than her, but at least he still looked like a teenager. Mel wondered if she should go talk to this person, silently wishing that he would be the first to talk to her.

User Image As Kiora Morganstern Nyx waited at the airport with her bags, one fencing bag holding her fencing gear, and a plaid suitcase she held out her left hand admiring her new engagement ring. She was dressed impeccably in a black dress with a red bow in the back with black peep toe pumps and a black jacket over her dress to fight the chill of the air. She was dressed to the nines wanting to make a good impression on the others, she remembered some of the other cardholders and their fussy family lineages: they would want her looking impeccable even though she just got out of traveling for over twenty-four hours. And of course she had the Nyx family to represent: she had to make a good impression.

Suddenly a black sedan stopped in front of her and the driver rolled down the window. "Kiora Nyx?" The driver asked.

Kira nodded smiling a large smile, "Yes, that is me." The driver opened the door to help her with her things and she waved him aside, "Don't worry about it. Just pop the trunk I've got my bags." Surprisingly agile in heels she swung her suitcase into the trunk, it landing with a heavy thud and gently placed her fencing bag on top of the suitcase. The driver feeling quite helpless shut the door of the trunk and held the back door for her before getting into the driver's seat again.

Sliding into the back seat Kira pulled out her phone and looked at her missed calls: 27. All were from Fredrick, considering how Kira left him wasn't surprising.

Two days ago, Kira got a call from Radik Yanikova concerning the attacks on cardholders across the world. For once, Kira had been lucky and avoided attacks, but that didn't mean the others were as lucky as she was. Radik told her that he was gathering all the cardholders and he needed her to return to the Arcane Society. So, Kira immediately began packing her bags after the call, much to Fredrick's alarm.
"What are you doing?" He demanded.
"I have to leave to fulfill my duty as a cardholder," Kira replied. "I just got a call from Radik to-"
"The old man you've talked about in Europe? Why now?" Fredrick had asked.
"There's been attacks on other cardholders, it isn't safe."
Fredrick swore and snapped, "Nothing has happened to you, we're safe. If you go off you'll get yourself killed like your parents."
Kira had moved to slap him but Fredrick caught her hand. "Kira, please," he begged. Pulling a ring out of his pocket he said, "I was going to propose to you sometime in the next couple months... let's get married. You stay here. You have a job you like... you..."
Kira took the ring and slid it on her finger, "Okay, let's get married."
"Really?" Fredrick exclaimed hugging her. "You'll stay?"
"No," Kira said, "I have to go. But let's get married, okay?" She pulled away from him and pecked him on the cheek. "My flight is in two hours, I have to go, sorry..." At that she grabbed her bags and ran outside hailed a cab and went to the airport.

Sighing Kira dialed Fredrick's number, "You called?" Fredrick answered with a string of curses toward her. "I love you too, Freddy... yeah... yeah, I know it sucks what I did but I had no choice." She paused letting him talk some more, "Uh-huh, what?! You come to the Arcane Society... no! Not now at least... please, just wait. I'll be fine. I promise. Okay? I love you too. Bye-bye."

As she hung up she noticed the driver staring at her, she raised a blonde brow at him and said in a challenge, "What?"

"We're um... here," the driver said.

"What?! Why didn't you say sooner?" Kira demanded hurrying out of the car, and grabbing her fencing bag from the trunk. Her other bag she allowed the chauffeur to deal with. Hurrying up the steps she entered through the main entrance noticing that many of the cardholders had already gathered.

Bowing she forced a smile, still irked by her conversation with Fredrick, and said, "Sorry, am I late? My flight just got in."

Constance couldn’t help but notice that Hidiyoshi’s lips seemed to have become a straight rigid line across his face as Markus entered the room. She, on the other hand, gave Markus a smile and said promptly, “Just going to go over the status downstairs and what we should expect at the banquet.”

Radik gave Markus and nod and continued to finish his oatmeal. Afterwards, he wiped his mouth with a napkin, pushed the empty bowl of oatmeal away from him and cleared his throat. “Well, Now that we are all present, let us review today’s schedule and have any updates presented. I had always hoped that the cause of our next banquets get together would be for a more joyful reason, but as all three of you know, we have lost many fine cardholders within the last few months. We will need to recuperate our forces, examine their skills, train them if necessary, and then we need to figure out who or what is behind the recent attacks.” Radik sighed and then looked at Constance. “Constance, how are the preparations going?”

Constance whipped up her clipboard and began to say as her eyes skimmed the notepad that had several swirling black inked notes. “Several of our drivers have been sent to retrieve the cardholders and currently five cardholders are now accounted for. We had a little hiccup in the floral arrangement in the banquet hall, we received a special freebie, the florist sent a set of passion fruit flowers as a thank you...but it turns out a few of the banquet helpers were severely allergic to them. They are okay now after Dr. Watson was able to subside their massive swelling. Also in the kitchen had a little episode, one of the mechanical mixers was possessed by a vengeful spirit of a murdered wife, who mistook our head baker as her husband and chased him around the kitchen. That issue has been settled after holy water was dosed upon it. I think we should keep an emergency bottle properly labeled in the kitchen this time, since the last glass bottle of holy water was found empty, but maybe storing it next to the vodka might have been the problem.” Constance paused to take a breath of air and look up to survey the others in the room with smile before she continued on with her update. “Otherwise, everything is going according to plan. Once the rest of the cardholders arrive we will be able to usher them into the banquet for the ceremony, owning that no one else is severely allergic to to flowers and that nothing else becomes possessed.”

“Yes, though possessed utensils that start chasing everyone during the feast would add some element of much needed fun.” Radik commented, the corners of his mouth twitching into a smile and he chuckled at the mayhem that must have taken place in the kitchen. Radik thanked Constance and turned to Hidiyoshi. “How is the condition of the protective barrier Hidiyoshi?” Hidiyoshi cleared his throat and replied, “Fairly well actually, there hasn’t been much damage to them during the past week, which seems odd after the seemingly increase in activity for the past months. The anchor points will need to be revitalized however. I will need a healers help though.” Radik mulled this though over in his head as he looked at the mask like face of Hidiyoshi. The barrier must have taken a considerable amount of damage during those months to urge Hidiyoshi to perform the sacrifices at the points. “ Very well, we shall have to see test the prowess of our healer however before she can accompany you.” Radik remarked and then added as an afterthought. “I think it will also be advisable that another experienced cardholder should come with you as well...Markus? I hope I can depend on you to ensure that Hidiyoshi’s endeavour does not become prey to hunting spirits?” Radik’s eyes left Hidiyoshi’s face to peer over at Markus, though he didn’t miss the lines on Hidiyoshi’s face harden at the advice.

“Are you going to try anything else or just stuff your face with shrimp?” Milos inquired to Kiwan who was still chomping away at a plate full of crispy shrimp. “Buff, theree so tashy!” Kiwan replied with a mouth full of shrimp. “Continue on eating more and you’ll turn into one! And maybe then I’ll turn you into the main course!” Milos retorted and turned back to the buffet table where he began to place an assortment of delicacies onto it. He noticed that Lenka had been talking Adrian and then Jade before two new arrivals showed up. Milos was unfamiliar with either, but had felt a twinge of pity for the girl who entered. No doubt this was the healer he had heard Hidiyoshi mention to Contance. Such a young age to start her journey.

After smiling and wishing Jade good luck, Lenka noted two new occupants in the hall. “Schraeder?” Lenka asked questioningly as she stepped forward towards the man who entered and smile at the young lady. “I’m Lenka, not sure if you remember me, I was usually sick when you made your trips to visit father.” Lenka continued to say as she extended out her hand.

Kiwan, apart from everyone else was...on cloud 9. So enrapt with his shrimp that the sudden THUD! opening of the very heavy entrance doors made Kiwan jump and start coughing. He nearly chocked on the shrimp from the shock. Kiwan turned to the door to see another arrival walk in and ask if she was tardy for the banquet. “Nope, you alright with time. Shrimp?” Kiwan replied as he extended the plate still full of shrimp towards her.

Kira smiled at Kiwan as he offered her the plate of shrimp. Her eyes lit up at them, and she quickly took the plate with her dominant hand which was her left hand, impulsively, "Oh my God, I haven't had shrimp in about three years now," Kira gushed excitedly. As she popped a shrimp in her mouth she closed her eyes briefly enjoying the taste, "And I'm starving. I've only had plane and airport food for the past twenty odd hours."

"Ever since I started going out with my fiance I had to give up eating shrimp, since he's deathly allergic to shellfish,"
explained Kira.

Smiling widely she held out her right hand for Kiwan to shake. "My name is Kiora Morganstern Nyx, but you can call me Kira." Growing more serious and somber she said, "I inherited my father''s legacy as the holder of the Devil card. What is your card?"

For some reason, Melody found Jade to be intimidating. It was written all over her face. On the strip, this wouldn't be a problem. Many people found her intimidating in that circumstance. But socially, she would rather be thought of as friendly than scary. So instead of pressing conversation, Jade ended it with a small "Nice to meet you" and then focused her attention elsewhere.

There wasn't many people in the room that she didn't recognize. There was another young man standing quietly nearby. She thought about talking to him, but then stopped when she considered that she may be considered frightening to him also.

Another blonde woman walked into the room, with a fencing bag draped over her shoulders. It was relieving to see another fencer in the academy. At least now, Jade would have someone to practice with. Hoping that she was not interrupting this woman's conversation with Kiwan, she walked over gingerly and introduced herself.

"Hi, I'm Jade. Which weapon do you fence? Sorry, I hope I'm not interrupting your conversation, Kiwan."

Kira bit her lip realizing she was most likely being too talkative. There was a pause when Kira asked Kiwan his card and she was interrupted by the words, "Hi, I'm Jade. Which weapon do you fence? Sorry, I hope I'm not interrupting your conversation, Kiwan."

Kira turned to see a blonde haired woman who looked older and more mature than Kira. It struck Kira that with their matching blonde hair the two looked like they could possibly be related, and they both carried fencing bags. It was ironic. What would only be more ironic is if they fenced the same weapon, but there was only a 33% of that. The woman might have been intimidating to some, but to Kira she was a fellow fencer, and already the two women had something in common.

Kira couldn't help but scrutinize the woman some, however. Jade wasn't dressed nearly as formal as Kira was, but then again, Kira was the type of woman to go all out in everything she did. If Kira was going to dress up, she was going to dress to the nines. Jade also seemed to be an unfamiliar face, so no doubt she wasn't a part of any card holding family, not that that fact really bothered Kira too much. It just made Kira wonder slightly if Jade could ever understand the loss that card holding families understood. Jade was most likely not orphaned due to a fight that her parents were pulled into by fate.

Regardless, Kira decided to show her more sunny disposition to Jade. Maybe, Jade and Kira could get along as fellow fencers and anyhow, now was not the time to make assumptions and conclusions about the others she was going to be working with for the next coming months at the very least.

Answering Jade's question, Kira said smiling a radiant smile that lit up her greenish eyes, "I dabble with all three, but competitively I fence epee. I went to nationals fencing epee, my coach said I'd have gone farther if I wasn't so impulsive. I'm Kiora Nyx by the way, you can call me Kira."

Kira was dressed very... stiffly. There was no other way to put it. Jade was sure that she didn't wear that on a daily basis. She had never seen a fencer comfortable in a dress or formal wear, but she was an epeeist. And the epees tend to be exceptions.

Thinking about her clothing, Jade tugged at her sleeves. They were getting wrinkled. She could not wait to change out of her outfit.

"I went to nationals fencing epee, my coach said I'd have gone farther if I wasn't so impulsive." Kira had said.

"Well maybe you should try sabre then. It might be more your style. Epees fencers tend to be more careful." Jade replied. "I fence sabre."

"Anyway, it's very nice to meet you." She extended her arm in anticipation of a handshake. "We should practice together sometimes. I don't fence epee normally, so you could teach me? I am so glad there's another fencer here, or else my skills will get even more rusty." She thought about the last time she had actually competed, It was nearly six years ago. Ever since her coma, the coach had been hesitant to put her back on the team. And her own family had also pressured her to take it easy, in case it happened again. But Jade knew that it wouldn't.

After a moment's pause, Schraeder recognized two of the people in the room he had just entered. Technically speaking, he only knew one of them, since Lenka had never actually been in his presence before, but he had heard of her from her father more often than she knew. The old man was proud of her, Schraeder could see, so finally meeting her was a nice step for him.

"Jade," Schraeder said pleasantly, bowing his head to her and letting a smile creep to his face. They had met once, several years back, and Schraeder quickly ran over the list of facts that he remembered about her: she was an Olympian - a fencer, even - so he respected her for that. She could be a challenge for him to beat in a swordfight, but it would certainly be fun. She also wasn't hard on the eyes, though he would never mention it out loud.

When Jade dismissed herself to speak to the others, Schraeder turned to Lenka and bowed again, always maintaining an air of professionalism and respect. "Lenka," he said, taking a step towards her. "Of course I remember you, though I haven't really met you in person before. Your father has told me all about you, actually. I can honestly say that it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." He offered her his hand to shake.

For the moment, he ignored Kira. He had never seen her before and didn't know if she would be worth talking to just yet, so he would observe before he approached her. He did note that she also held a fencing bag; she might provide an interesting distraction while Schraeder was stuck here for a while.

Kira laughed at Jade's reply and shook Jade's hand, "My coach wasn't complaining about only my impulsiveness on the strip, though. Anyhow I don't have the dedication to fencing to try to compete in the Olympics: I have other passions."

The truth was Kira's antics in college got her almost placed on probation on her college team at least once. Kira was good about walking the fine line of trouble, at least when it came to something she was passionate about. Even though she didn't have a minor arcane card, Kira had always felt that being trained in fencing would help her be a better card holder. She had chosen epee precisely because epee fencers tended to be more careful, feeling that perhaps she could learn to be less impulsive. It really hadn't worked as she was still as impulsive as ever at least in her life, but on the strip she had come to be more cautious than she normally would have been from her years of training since she was in primary school.

Letting go of Jade's hand Kira concluded with, "Practicing together sounds fun. And, maybe you could train me in sabre: I'm the worst at sabre." Smiling, she added, "Probably because I never bothered training in sabre."
