User ImageGrinning at Scott, if only to be polite and friendly, Adam was about to change the subject (again) to soothe the atmosphere of the table when he subconsciously became aware of Bella’s head turning to look at him. That was never a good sign, but boy was it good to have Bella back to her tomboyish ways again. After having been mercilessly teased since they were in kindergarten, when he had developed a crush on Bella, the fact that she never put up with his flirtatious crap (detested it to the core actually) had been the main perk of his original interest. Even though he had later discovered that it was all a ruse to mask how he truly felt about Alice, he would always have a small soft spot for Bella. The sentiments were simply changed now, and he turned his head to look at Bella with his eyebrows raising.

So, Sir Lancelot, who‘se idea was it for you to grow out your hair?”, ‘
Of course. You attack my hair first.’, Regretting the decision not to tie it back like Johnny Depp, Adam chuckled under his breath and raised his right hand to run his fingers through the locks as if he hadn’t taken notice of it’s length before. An ‘oh yeah!’, brightening up his eyes, Adam chuckled again and tried to come up with a good excuse. ‘ Bella. You need a cowbell on your tongue so that your comments irritate yourself as much as other people…’, That thought being too mean to joke about, though it had only been pondered in mental play, Adam shook his head and turned to look towards Alice. Looking to her for help served to be a fruitless hope, she was too preoccupied pouring through the menu to notice. Not that she would do anything besides shrug or give him a teasing stare. Sometimes his Ally hated his hair, and other times she loved it. So he was unsure the mood she had at the moment, only that usually men never grew their hair out. Stalling for lack of words, Bella continued:

Never thought I‘d see you with scruffles.”, Adam could come up with an answer to that, but now was not the time. The jokes had to stop before someone spouted a hurtful comment, and Adam didn’t want to do anything to risk spoiling this dinner. She looked increasingly more upset by the minute, and he didn’t know why. The not knowing was what made him assume that it was because the dinner wasn’t going very well. Adam opened his menu and surveyed the items with renewed interest. Seeing that looked to be a filet mignon, Adam just shrugged and pointed. Once he made up his mind, that was that, and he was going for it. Hearing Alice begin to speak, he couldn’t help feeling relieved. His darling heart sounded a little cheerful, and it was music to his ears. Adam’s ‘scruffly’ mouth curved in a smile.

I‘m so glad everyone came…So, what has everyone been up to all this time?”, Adam knew he didn’t have to comment at this point in time. She already knew what he was up to, and when someone else asked him again, he would state so at the time being and not worry about it until then. About to relax (always a sure sign of trouble) Adam eased into the back of his chair just as a woman wearing Flora de Poison walked past the table and attacked everyone with her powerful perfume. Raising his hand to avoid scenting the toxin, Adam looked at Alice for only a moment. Enough to gauge that her skin started to become green. Her vision (at least to him) looking as if dizziness had overtaken her consciousness. That little glimpse was all it took for his heart to sink in his chest. A dark cloud choking whatever remnant of sunshine that he had begun to feel. ‘
She‘s sick…The HIV…’ True, Adam had suffered through a great many worrisome trials throughout his HIV process; but, Alice had been through Sickle Cell Anemia before contracting HIV. In denial that they both suffered just as much, Adam couldn’t help being worried every time he saw her show signs of suffering from the illness. ‘ F*ck…

Is she alright?”, Adam didn’t answer. He just kept staring towards the hallway which led towards the bathrooms. ‘
No. She‘s not okay.’, and he doubted that Alice was going to tell him in front of all these people. Seeing the waitress come back to take their order, Adam guessed (simply from his knowledge of Alice) and ordered the Smoked Salmon for the both of them before excusing himself from the table and (graciously) storming off towards the women’s room. At this point, he didn’t care how it looked, he was worried about his fiance, and if she was in trouble, he was not going to leave her there in the women’s rest room all by herself. Approaching the door, Adam raised his hand and gently brought it down on the wood.

Knock, knock, knock…, anxiety began to quiver his stomach and churn the acid; making him nauseous.

Alice…Are you alright, Babe? Do you need me to go home and get something for you?”, Meaning their medication, Adam’s heart pounded in his chest as he waited for one of two dreaded answers. One being: ‘I’m fine, go away’, he stood there expecting that response even though his hopes wished that Alice would let him in again. There was a time when she always let him in (metaphorically and literally speaking) when she was troubled, and he hoped that they could begin to do that once more. ‘ Please talk to me Ally…I‘m dying out here.’, exaggerating from worry, Adam turned his head to glance toward the table. Raising his left hand to wave as if that would ensure everyone that things were better than they actually were.

Alice had been completely taken back by the strong reaction her body had displayed as a result of the overbearing scent of the woman's perfume. Of course this was not the first time this had occurred. During her previous pregnancy she became incredibly sensitive to strong smells almost from the get-go. One more sign pointing towards the bittersweet notion that once again she may have a baby growing inside of her.

Immediately after politely excusing herself from the table, Alice rushed towards the direction of the bathroom and locked the door promptly behind her. Thankful for the fact she hadn't already dined on the expensive food the establishment offered she voided the entire contents of her stomach into the porcelain bowl in front of her. She grimaced and grabbed her side in pain; getting sick was never something she enjoyed. Of course, who would enjoy such a thing?

"Alice... are you alright, Babe? Do you need me to go home and get something for you?"

Oh crud... he thinks I need my medication. Alice knew exactly what Adam meant with the emphasis on the word "something". A part of her wanted to let him inside of the small bathroom right away and let him know exactly what was going on. She didn't want him to worry unnecessarily, especially since she hadn't had any HIV related complications in quite some time. On the other hand she wasn't sure if she could allow herself to give him the false hope that they would be able to start the little family that they wanted.

She knew that she was going to have to come up with some sort of compromise with herself. There was no way she was going to let him worry needlessly about her but there was also no way she was ready to tell him about the little pink plus sign she had been seeing a lot more lately.

"Don't worry, I'm alright," Alice called out, her voice echoing around the toilet bowl before the sound made its way out of the bathroom. She knew she was going to have to come up with a reason for why she suddenly fell sick to her stomach but she decided that she would sort that out after the dinner was over. Perhaps the night would go so well that Adam would completely forget about her little mishap and she wouldn't need to lie to him - at least she could hope.

After washing up Alice exited the bathroom to see that Adam was still standing on the other side of the door. She didn't expect anything less from her fiance, knowing that he would want to see for himself that she was fine before allowing himself to go back to the table with the others. She smiled in his direction and interlaced her fingers with his before leading him back to the table and sitting back down.

"So who's up for a couple drinks after dinner so we can all catch up in a less... formal setting," Alice suggested to the group, sensing that some of them seemed a touch out of place. Of course in making this comment she completely didn't realize the fact that it would be entirely unwise for her to be drinking alcohol. "Or... something else... little Terrence here might have an issue getting into the bar." Upon realizing her mistake she quickly tried to redeem herself (even though she had no need as no one even knew her little secret) by making the lighthearted joke.

User Image Don‘t worry, I‘m alright,”, Adam had expected such a response, and unfortunately he would have to suck it up and keep waiting for her to leave the restroom. Just GO IN THERE, his mind demanded, and Adam desperately wanted to comply. ‘ I can‘t just go into the ladies restroom and wrap my arms around her in a bathroom stall.’, Somehow, he had imagined Alice looking into the mirror worrying about the dinner and what to say, so hearing what he thought was an echo to her voice made his mind imagine Alice actually using the restroom for its intended purpose. ‘ Not interrupting that.’ Without waiting for too much longer, Alice came out of the bathroom with a smile in his direction.

Maybe your overreacting, see, she looks fine. Smiling back, Adam wasted no time in interlocking their fingers and giving her hand a little squeeze. Following Alice back to the table with a reassuring smile on his face (to prevent the table from possibly questioning if she was alright while Alice was present) Adam sat back down and turned his head to lean in close to Alice’s ear.

I ordered you the salmon…I hope that’s okay.”, It might not have been her preffered dish, but with her looking sick at the moment, he had imagined that the seasons would be lighter and easier for her stomach to handle. Regardless, Alice tended to enjoy salmon, so he felt he couldn’t go too wrong with that decision. Years of living together had to amount to something.

So who‘s up for a couple drinks after dinner so we can all catch up in a less…formal setting,” Adam raised his hand just as a waitress brought their drinks. Thinking on the fact that so many had ordered ales and such, Adam couldn’t help wondering if more alcohol would be a good idea. Especially with Bella and Jack’s little tyke around. ‘
Maybe one of us should volunteer to stay somewhere and watch him.’ half tempted to suggest his idea to Bella himself, Adam decided to wait and see what Jack had to say on the matter before piping up his opinion. ‘ Jack and I can chat anytime…these guys need to talk to each other.’ To cure bad blood between them.

User ImageSkylar was concerned when she saw Alice get up and excuse herself to the restroom. Of course, her worry stayed when Cailen showed the same concern. Before anyone could do anything about it, the waitress came to take their order. Sky still had no idea what to order. She was tempted to just tell the waitress to surprise her but that could end up really bad, not to mention everyone else would probably think she was strange. Taking a quick scan of the menu, Skylar simply pointed at something on the menu when it came to be her turn. Seeing the prices of the food, Skylar hoped that it wasn’t going to be bad.

While she was relieved that Adam went to go check on Alice after the waitress left, Skylar was nervous about who was left at the table. Cailen, his “date”, Jack, Bella, and their son. Then there was Scott. Skylar remembered that his hand was still around her waist which calmed her. He was there to help her if she needed. Skylar couldn’t help the fear that Jack or Bella would attack her once Adam and Alice were out of the way. Over the years Skylar had nightmares that involved the two of them. They would start out with Skylar being back in the hospital room with Jack, where he lied to her and told her he loved her. The words ’I love you’ would leave Jack’s lips. That’s where the memory ended and her dream began however. After those words were spoken, Skylar would turn around to find Bella there. She would go to Jack’s side and the two would laugh at her for thinking that Jack could ever feel that way about her. Luckily, those dreams hadn’t been around for awhile but being at the same table as the two, the memory of the dream decided to come and haunt her.

While the silence was killing her, Skylar couldn’t bring herself to break it. All she could do was just look down at the table in front of her. She couldn’t even bring herself to talk to Scott who was right next to her. ’It was a big mistake coming here’ That was all that was running through her head. She knew she should just keep a positive outlook but she couldn’t muster one. Looking at her phone for the time, Skylar found herself counting down how much longer she would have to suffer through this.

Skylar smiled when Alice and Adam rejoined them. She wouldn’t ask if Alice was alright. Adam probably already did that and she didn’t want to annoy Alice with repeated questions. When Alice mentioned going somewhere after dinner, Skylar felt her stomach drop. ’Continue this torture longer?’ Although, the thought of being in a less formal situation was enough for Skylar to agree to it but did she really want to continue to see these people after dinner. Alice she wouldn’t mind as much. The two used to be so close but the thought that they could so easily just fall out of contact made her second guess how close they really were. Cailen was also someone she wouldn’t mind actually catching up with. She missed him more than she realized. Remembering Scott next to her, Skylar sighed softly. Scott wouldn’t want to stay with the others and she couldn’t blame him. ”Um…I guess it depends on what time this dinner ends…” It wasn’t a no but it wasn’t a yes either. Skylar couldn’t really force herself to actually give a definite answer. She must have sounded like an idiot to the rest of the group. Who knows? They might like the fact that she wouldn’t join them.

As soon as Bella suggested it, Jack had preoccupied his time with Terrance. They had gotten the special crayon out of its prison and he had started to help color in The Joker's tail coat with a purple crayon. Terrance didn't seem to mind, he was obsessed with Batman, anyway. Jack had tuned in and out of the conversation, realizing how much they had all lost in the time they hadn't spoke. It was sad, that in only five years they could all grow up so fast and forget each other. Goes to show what "friendship" means to them. He had caught a few tidbits of the conversation about ordering food. He turned his attention from his son to point to the steak, he smiled up at Bella. "That looks good." He then found the kid's menu on the back for Terrance. The boy pointed at the chicken nuggets with a broad smile. Jack nodded in approval, "I'm glad they have the kid's section, how ever small..." He smiled sheepishly. It was inappropriate to have Terrance with them, but Jack would have felt bad to just leave their kid behind. (He had a feeling Bella would miss him too much, as well.)

When Alice rushed off to the bathroom, Jack felt a sudden worry wash over him. He hadn't worried about Alice like that in so long. He had almost forgotten her past history. But when he saw Adam run after her, he couldn't help but smile. It was lovely to see that they were so in love, and how protective Adam was of his Alice. There was no doubt, if there ever was, why he had proposed the time he did. Jack turned towards Bella with a simple hand hold, a smile, and finally casually sipped at his drink. He felt quiet, like he hadn't said anything in so long. But at the same time, everyone else seemed to be silent and awkward as soon as the two hosts walked away from the table.

As soon as Adam and Alice came back, though, it was like a warm light was cast over the table. It wasn't that everyone hated each other, it was that it was just awkward to suddenly be with everyone after so long. Jack wasn't sure what to talk about. If he was still struggling with OCD, he would be trying to control the entire situation... trying to tell everyone what to say, basically, to make everything less awkward. But, on the other hand, he would also be obsessing over the coloring book and attempting to help Terrance color in the lines a bit more precisely. But, that was Old Jack. He had gone to a therapist to get better medication and to help him take care of his OCD with out the meds. After five years, someone would expect some work to be done. He was glad that Bella wanted to "change" for his OCD, but he couldn't help but feel guilty. He loved Bella for who she was and is, there was no changing anything about her. If she wanted to be a little more messy, he wouldn't stop her. (At least, not anymore.)

His thoughts were brought back to the table when Alice suggested a more casual setting after dinner. He had heard Skylar's comment and agreed with a nod and a subtle "yeah". He shrugged towards Alice, "I guess you all could go, I'll take the kiddo while you kids have fun." He ruffled his kid's hair playfully. He tried to make sure he didn't come off as the "boring dad", but he realized just how much of a father he had really become. "We were goin' to spend the night in town, anyway. That's what stinks about living farther away." He chuckled. Then turned towards Bella, he didn't want her to think he was going to abandon her. He leaned into her ear, "Up to you, sweetie, what you wanna do..."

Seeing the look on Adam’s face, and the fact that he didn’t answer his question, Cailen began to wonder if something was really wrong with Alice. The way that she left the table, and the way that Adam chased after her made it look like she wasn’t just going to the bathroom. I guess I will find out when they come back. With both Adam and Alice gone from the table, it was really silent. It was weird how without Alice and Adam at the table how none of them spoke a word to each other. It wasn’t like they just met or anything, these were the people who Cailen grew up with, who he spent most of his life with. His sister was sitting right there, only a few chairs away and he didn’t even bother to say anything to her. How could this happen? How could we become so distant from each other? Looking back if Cailen knew that this was going to happen, he would have changed something.

After the incident though, things were hard for Cailen. He couldn’t help but blame himself for everything that had happened. He spent most of the time beating himself up over it and refusing to talk to anyone of them. For a good few months, he spent them alone trying to figure out what he was going to do with his life. Maybe if I wasn’t so wrapped up in my own life I would have taken the time to see what everyone else was doing. Now that he thought about it, it almost seemed like he was selfish and too absorbed in his own life to even call one of them to see how they were doing. But on the other hand, neither of them made an effort to keep in touch either. Cailen was pulled from his thoughts when Alice and Adam rejoined the table. Alice looked fine; maybe it was nothing. Or maybe she is just trying to cover it up. Having known Alice for so long, and assuming that she didn’t change much in five years, he figured she was hiding something.

Either way, she acted just as happy as when they arrived, so it was something she didn’t want to address in front of everyone. Cailen didn’t really know what to say when she requested that they go somewhere for drinks after this dinner. Personally, he was up for it. It would be nice to be able to talk to each other in someplace where he could relax and actually let loose. This setting felt too formal for a reunion of old friends. What kept him from agreeing right away was first, seeing what Winnie wanted to do. If she wanted to get home, then Cailen didn’t want to force her to stay. Also the fact that Bella had Terrance and he certainly couldn’t go to a bar and she probably wouldn’t want to keep him up late. So Cailen waited to see what some of the other answers were before making his own decision. Skylar didn’t seem too enthused about it, which sadden him. She was the one out of the group that he really wanted to catch up with.

There were so many questions he wanted to ask her, but he didn’t want to just grill her with questions right in the middle of dinner. Also, he felt like if she didn’t come that he would never see her again. It felt if he let her leave again, that she would again fall off the face of the Earth until Alice plans another reunion of some sort. He wasn't so sure if he could deal with that a second time. Then Cailen heard Jack offer to take Terrance back to some hotel while everyone else went out. That was what stunk about growing up. Before, all of them could just go out and do something on a whim. They had nothing to hold them back or tie them up. Now with Jack and Bella having a son, and most everyone else with jobs they actually had to think before they went out. It would be weird getting together without Jack there. Alice did offer to go somewhere more kid friendly, which they could do, but Cailen had no idea what that would be.

“Well I’m up for anything you guys want to do. That is, if you’re up for it.” Cailen said the last part to Winnie. He didn’t want to agree to anything without making sure she was ok with it. From the way she acted on the way over, it seemed like she wouldn’t mind. For some reason she showed real interest in meeting his friends. Of course all that could have changed since she actually met them. He waited for Winnie’s answer before making a final decision. As he thought about what he last said, it felt almost like he put her on the spot, like if she wanted to go home, then she would look like the bad guy. He felt bad for that, but didn’t really know how to fix it; though it might not be necessary if the plans fall through. Would it be weird if only say Alice, Adam, and himself and Winnie are the only ones to go? That definitely would be awkward seeing as how Alice was his ex-girlfriend and engaged to Adam.

User Image Watching Jack and Terrance coloring in the coloring book, Bella’s heart was a jar churning warm golden honey. Things were far from perfect in their little family, and these adorable moments were something she would always treasure. Still feeling especially tender and sweet from the honey in her heart, Bella’s lips curved in a bright smile when Jack turned to look at her. Sharing eye-contact was usually all it took to get her to smile usually, especially when she was in a better mood. ‘ Still as handsome as ever.’, looking down when Jack pointed at the menu, Bella felt her stomach pull down towards her feet like the sudden drop on a rollercoaster. ‘ Jack…steak? That’s the most expensive thing on just about any menu…’ Men. Nothing could be done with them. Though Bella grinned and nodded, she closed her menu and set it gently down upon the table. ‘ We can buy chicken cordon bleu at the grocery store…if he wants the steak, we‘re going to split.’ She wasn’t altogether starving anyway, and it did come with two very generous sides. Thinking that the scene was becoming awkward once more. (if it ever lost that quality to begin with) Bella opened her mouth to speak just when Alice left the table.

Steadily, Bella’s heart began to pound from concern. Not because she was heading towards the bathroom, but because Adam was following after her. ‘
To think…I had almost forgotten.’, All those years of visiting Alice in the childrens wing of the hospital refreshed her memory like a flood, and Bella simply watched the pair disappear for as long as they were visible. In a morbid sort of way, watching the scene transpire eased her tension. Alice was sick with sickle cell anemia for so long that when she was diagnosed with HIV, she should have felt devastated (and she was to some degree) but Alice’s being ill was normal. It was a familiarity, and somehow, it reminded her of the time they had lost. Time that had been stolen from them because of their own mistakes. Though the underlying worry remained unscathed, Bella somehow found the confidence to look at the others at the table and contemplate fixing this situation. ‘ They can‘t still be furious after five years. Bitter, angry perhaps, but not furious…’ that seemed like sound logic, and Bella decided amongst herself that she was going to break the ice. Jack might have been the one everyone probably wanted to speak to; but, he was being silent. If you don’t talk, he wont.

Feeling the task being laid upon her shoulders, Bella used the honey leftover in her heart to smile at Jack and Terrance one last time before turning her head towards her brother and directing her sunshine towards him. Out of everyone besides their absent hosts, Bella sincerely missed her brother’s presence. With his new job, he hardly ever called, and the absence was starting to have an effect upon her. Reaching out, Bella tried to grab and squeeze his hand, but then she lost her nerve, and reached for her glass instead.

Taking a small drink, Bella’s eyes inevitably flickered towards Skylar. The gorgeous woman who could easily have been a model if she had desired to be. Feeling a string in her heart being plucked, Bella could only describe the sensation as something Casper might have experienced in knowing that he had unfinished business. You need to make things right. You need to talk to her. Tell her how you feel and get it over with. A part of Bella still wanted to be her friend, even if there was scarcely hope still burning within her breast. ‘
She probably doesn‘t even like me.’ but she wouldn’t know unless she tried, and that was the hardest part.

Gosh, how do I fix this?’, out of the habit of swearing because of Terrance, Bella kept her eyes on Skylar as she took another quiet drink from her dark stout. The empty chair beside her where Adam sat would soon be filled, and the pressure to speak preyed heavily on her mind. Tugging her to open her mouth. Just tap your glass against hers and tell her that your glad she came tonight. You know you mean it, just say it. She probably thinks you hate her or something. The latter was certainly not true, but the idea of Skylar hating her guts continued to plague her psyche. Who in their right mind would care about a friend that her boyfriend slept with? ‘ At the time…we weren‘t the best of friends.’ Then the question struck her. Were they ever friends? Bella could only blink. She didn’t know. The idea of her own actions giving the impression of never caring about Skylar had never fully occurred to her before, and the weight of that revelation was a pistol wound to her heart. ‘ I don‘t think I ever really let Skylar in.’, She hadn’t given Skylar the time of day to foster a relationship, and here she was thinking she had only done one thing horribly wrong. Her wounding Skylar could have started long before she ever slept with Jack. Grieved deeply, Bella raised her right hand from her glass to push her wavy hair behind her ear in preparation for saying hello. Skylar needed to see the expression on her face if she was going to say what she wanted to say and have it be believed.

Tink your glasses together and say: I’m really glad you’re here. Commanded, Bella reached her hand down to grab her ale; raised it, and started to sit up a little to reach Skylar’s cup from across the table when Adam and Alice returned. Her moment had passed, and Bella didn’t want to express her vulnerability while Adam and Alice were present. ‘
Cr*p!’, Relieved that Alice seemed healthy, Bella covered her fumbled attempt by sipping silently at her drink just a little longer before setting it down and letting the others talk. FAIL! You shouldn’t have waited! If you get the chance again don‘t waste it! Her chocolate browns still on Skylar’s pretty face, Bella smiled as brightly as she had smiled at Jack a moment ago, in the hopes that she could wordlessly convey the sentence she had not been fast enough to say.

Um…I guess it depends on what time this dinner ends…”, Jack nodded, and Bella’s eyes flickered towards her husband’s from the movement. Nodding when Jack mumbled: ‘yeah’, Bella turned her head from Alice to look towards Jack when he began to speak. However, his statement did not surprise her as strongly as it normally would. Jack going to a motel room with their son, for once, sounded like a good idea. You can get Skylar alone to talk to her. Somehow, she thought that if Jack wasn’t nearby, her chances of being able to have a conversation one on one with Sky was a greater possibility than if he was around. Smiling brightly when Jack looked back at her, simply because of the unwritten law that she smiled when they shared eye-contact, Bella let the warmth color her face as his sweet voice whispered into her ear. Being called sweety heated all the honey in her heart to a scalding, gooey, fluid. Lifting her head to either kiss him or softly debate the best course of action to her husband, another revelation occurred to Bella’s mind. Her. Scott. One place. Without Jack. Fear gripped her heart, and Bella tried to think of another alternative before a solution seemed to present itself. Turning to Scott, Bella asked her question.

Is your friend‘s band playing in that concert at the park tonight? I saw a flier on the way here…”, If it was the park, they could take turns watching Terrance playing on the playground. She could approach Skylar to talk with her, with the safety net of Jack being relatively nearby for her to run to. To be perfectly honest, when she had first met Scott at Jack’s house playing videogames, he seemed like an okay person. A little eccentric, but it was a great contrast to Jack (and at the time, Jack was an obsessive nerd) which was refreshing. Unfortunately, Jack had left to go somewhere, and his father and mother were out of the house. Via work or buying forgotten ingredients for thanksgiving the next day, and…Bella cringed at the memory, and knew she would have to tell Jack about what had happened someday soon. Part of her still felt ashamed because of what happened, like the entire ’event’ had been her fault. If Jack knew, he might try and kill Scott, and that would create an even larger gap between herself and Skylar. One that had no hope of ever being mended. Waiting for Scott’s answer, Bella tried her best to smile at Scott. It was hard, because of the memories, but she was as kind as she could possibly be. For Skylar’s sake.

Once Adam and Alice returned to the table, it seemed the atmosphere wasn't as awkward. Although Scott had some kind of love for his cousin, so at least he had that familiarity within the group of strangers. Well, come to mention it, they weren't really strangers at all. Scott knew them, if only for a brief millisecond. Jack was his cousin, Skylar was his girlfriend, and the rest? Well, he only knew of them from stories, pictures, and the occasional holiday party. It was then when his memory flooded back to him when Bella turned her pretty little face towards him. It wasn't just that she was his cousin's baby mama, but he remembered a certain day when they happened to be alone. She was totally awesome then, she played video games and got messy. Bella was every dude's wet dream: totally hot with the mind of just another dude.

He was only three years older than her and at the time they were both in their teens. Her question wiped his brain and brought him back to reality with a smirk to his lips: Finally, a topic he actually cared about. He raised a finger, "Ah, there's two concerts tonight, actually, that they'll be playing at..." He chuckled and wrapped his arm back around Skylar's shoulders so he could lean in closer towards Bella without feeling like he was pushing her out of the way. "I was goin' to invite you guys to the show at eleven, in this quaint place downstairs of 'The Seven's East'... but if you guys prefer the earlier show at nine down at the park...? It'd be totally sh-weet!" 'The Seven's East' was another restaurant, but also mainly a bar, that lead downstairs into a musky club that band's used to play gigs. He hoped he didn't have to explain much about the place, if he had to no one would want to go there... but on the other hand, Scott was good at lying.

He turned is head to gently nuzzle his nose against Sky's cheek and return his attention to Bella. "Whatev' y'guys wanna do, eh?"

User ImageSkylar listened as the others gave their own responses to Alice's question. Jack apparently agreed with what she said. He even seemed to go one further and created a little scenario where he wouldn't have to be there at all. It did make sense that someone would have to watch the child but Skylar couldn't help but feel like Jack just wanted to be away from everyone else...or rather away from her. She knew that Jack and Bella would prefer it if she wasn't here. Skylar might even prefer it if she wasn't here. The night seemed to be dragging on.

Bella asked something about Scott's friend's band playing. 'Why would she even ask about that?' Bella had made it quite obvious that she wasn't a fan of Scott. Why make small talk with him? Skylar waited for Scott to make some comment like he had before. Was this night ever going to feel normal? That was when she heard him not only speak civilly to her but also say that he was going to invite everyone to the concert. Earlier in the night he was talking about ditching everyone else and going there. Now he wanted everyone to come with? Sky didn't know why this was bothering her so much.

Skylar saw Scott nuzzle against her more so than actually feel it. She was starting to feel the onset of a panic attack happening and definitely didn't want that happening in front of everyone else. "Um...excuse me. I need to get some air real quick." she gave a smile to everyone before she made for the exit. She didn't want anyone worrying about her. As she left she realized she very well could have just said she needed to use the restroom. That would have been a rational excuse. No changing that now however.

Feeling the cool night air hit her the instant she stepped outside, Sky felt better. She moved a ways from the entrance so she wouldn't be blocking anyone from getting in or out of the restaurant. Once she was a good distance she felt herself slowly start to pace. 'Why did Scott invite them? I thought he hated them.' Skylar felt horrible for getting upset over this. she should be happy that her boyfriend was getting along with the others. The problem could be that Skylar herself wasn't feeling like she  was getting along with the others. She wished things could go back to normal but they just couldn't. It was silly to think a little reunion like this would fix anything.

After a few breaths, Skylar felt calm enough to return to the table. However, once she started to move to the door she was frozen. It was like a wave washed over her and a massive headache hit her along with taking her vision. This caused Sky to back up against the wall, gripping it for dear life. Staring straight ahead of her, eyes open, Sky could only see black. Moments like these had happened before and each time Skylar was never sure if her sight would ever return to her. 'Please not now' It was the only thing she could do. Thankfully her sight returned to her. Everything was blurry for a few moments before becoming clear again. She waited fir her contacts to adjust and then let out a small sigh of relief. It was a good thing she left. The last thing she would want to happen would be for the others to see that.

[if anyone doesn't like this for whatever reason I can change it...]

WINNIE
RENFIELD

mwah“ Do‘ yaw’l know where our waitress is?” Winnie felt the skin on the nape of her lilly neck grow warm with embarrassment. She’d gotten too comfortable with these strangers too fast. And, god, the one thing she made a conscious effort to conceal was her hometown down South. Being a blond in her field—in any field—tended to award her some quizzical looks. And the few pink strands she’d recently added did little to help portray just how serious she was. Her accent, that honey-sweet southern drawl she actually tried to conceal, did absolutely nothing to help that. She supposed it was a good thing, how people underestimated her intelligence. It made them drop their guard. She’d figured out a way to mask her native twang after quite a bit of time studying neutral dialects, though it tended to rear its little head whenever she was tispy (very rarely), angry or frustrated (a little more often) or when she felt entirely comfortable with someone. Someone like Cailen, who’d she’d known long enough to almost regard as a brother. Winnie flashed a lightening quick, entirely false, smile at Bella’s joke and focused on counting the ice cubes left in her glass to calm herself enough to feel the rising, peachy blush fade from her cheeks. She let her attention drift, but made a point of keeping track of the conversation she didn’t feel comfortable joining. Some conflict had occurred and Alice had left and returned and everyone at the table had a right to be concerned or at least say something—everyone except Winnie. If she could hardly handle holding off from revealing her extensive knowledge on unfavorable topics like tapeworms, how could she possibly dare to try and chime in consoling Alice about some unknown ailment? Winnie would have frowned had she not been so focused on retaining the little, almost-smiling curve in the corners of her lips.

It worried her, what this dinner and these people were doing to her. They made her quiet, made her self-conscious and made her worry about pleasing them. That she was twenty-five and feeling like she was in middle school again was absurd. She hadn’t wanted to please any one group of people so much as she wanted to please them in too long a time to properly calculate. Maybe it was a little strange and maybe it was a little over zealous, but Winnie couldn’t help but feel like a measly commoner throwing herself at the feet of a council of demi-gods, asking for their approval while simultaneously realizing with horror that she’d brought nothing to sacrifice, no special gift to help persuade them into complying. What interest could they have in her? She was Cailen’s friend, sure, but beyond that…what possible intrigue could she hold? What, besides a trench coat and foreign awkwardness, could she bring to the table?

“…up for anything you guys want to do. That is, if you’re up for it.” Winnie blinked and automatically half-raised a brow when she realized Cailen was waiting for an answer. She rewound through the conversation’s recent track in her head and tried to make sense of the proposal. She subconsciously pulled a face, lips just slightly pursed and gently pulled towards one corner of her mouth, as she thought. The movement was quick and almost imperceptible, there and then gone, easily replaced by a smile. She almost parroted Cailen’s reply, but ran her words through her head just once more before speaking and realized her narrowly avoided faux pas. “Sure! I mean, as long as you guys aren’t sick of me by the end of dinner.” And the second the words left her mouth, Winifred wanted to reel them back in. Self-deprecation was coming easily to her again and it frightened her. She’d been a bold, quick tongued creature since high school and just a few minutes with these strangers was turning her into a mouse. Winnie almost wrinkled her nose. No one liked a mouse.

She listened to the others chat about potential plans and absently trailed her fingertip around the brim of her glass. After a while, she heard a thin, warbling note. Her hand flew away from the glass and into her lap like an embarrassed bird. It fluttered once beneath the table, torn between resting on top of her leg and creeping back up to the table’s surface to straighten her fork, which had been knocked out of line with the knife when she’d pulled her hand away. It eventually settled on the former and Winifred Renfield decided it'd be better not to check the group for any signs of them having witnessed her little mistake. After a beat, she gave into compulsion and straightened the fork before reaching to tap Cailen's arm. She leaned forward discreetly, propped one elbow on the table's edge and lightly rested her hand on her own cheek, and lowered her voice, not so much to conceal the content as to avoid interrupting whoever it was talking just then. "Are you sure I should come after dinner? If y'all want to just go out by yourselves, I could do some more work on the Maroney file. I mean, I just--" She paused, glancing down at the fork she'd managed to knock askew--again--with her elbow. She fixed it automatically while she finished speaking. "wouldn't want to be a tag-along or anything. And they all seem a little stressed, don't they?" 'Not that I'm not having a great time. I am. This is fascinating, really. Very interesting. And I want to go later. I'd love to go. Do you think I should go? I think they're all fascinating. I'd love to keep on observing...' Winnie almost added, just barely managing to keep the little jumble back in her throat while she closed her mouth and waited with subconsciously bated breath for Cailen's reply.

Alice smiled and nodded in acceptance of the fact Adam had just ordered the salmon for the both of them while she was in the bathroom. It was like he'd been a mind-reader, anyway. That was exactly what she pondered ordering anyway. With that, she turned her attention back to the group to hear their input on her suggestion that they do something afterwards. Immediately she could sense that Skylar seemed hesitant on the idea, which was expected, of course. Alice was surprised to hear Scott actually invite them out to see his friend's band play in the park later. Pleasantly surprised. Perhaps this was how they all were going to be able to recapture some sort of friendship between the group (as well as its new members) again.

"Nonsense," Alice finally spoke up after Winnie's comment about not wanting to tag along afterwards, "Any close friend of Cailen's is a friend of ours. Besides, I know he's got good taste in people." Alice added the last part with a smile before realizing how bad that could sound if it was taken the wrong way. She wondered if Winnie even knew that she and Cailen used to date. Oh well, that's in the past anyway.

Before she could utter another word, Alice heard the sound of her cell phone ringing from within her purse. Her first instinct was to ignore it, since this was such an important occasion and she didn't want to be rude by answering the call in the middle of dinner. As a compromise she peaked inside of her bag and caught a glance of who was calling - Cherie LeRoux. That was definitely a familiar name. Cherie was a contact that Alice had in Europe who had purchased a fair amount of her artwork during one of her trips to America. Alice realized that this could be something important, especially for Cherie to call when she knew it would be after business hours for Alice.

"Would you guys excuse me for just one moment? I have to take this call, I'll be right back," she informed the group before scooting off and answering the call.

After roughly ten minutes she returned to the group with a grin on her face so large it almost seemed like it would split in two. "I just got the offer of a lifetime! An old buyer of mine wants me to spend six months travelling in Europe to do some paintings for her!"

Glancing back and forth at each of the other members seated at the table, Adam smiled politely and tried not to deviate from that action by staring out towards the windows. Perhaps the years had changed him, but it occurred to him -only at this moment- how much he had changed. Whats happened to you? You used to be so outgoing and welcoming…now you have long hair and just fade into the background. Adam really didn’t have a thought to answer that besides it being a part of adjusting to a monogamous relationship. ‘ Maybe I should have gotten a haircut for tonight…’, Adam had to smirk and resist the temptation to roll his eyes. As for the group, they were all contemplating whether or not to go someplace else afterwards, and Adam wanted to pipe up the suggestion of going to his and Alice’s apartment to talk in a private setting. If only he could get a word in edgewise, they wanted to go to a concert.

Well that sounds fun…”, Adam was being nice. At one point he had loved concerts and nightclubs; but, he hadn’t been to a concert in over four years. For being almost thirty, his desire to attend concerts had significantly decreased. But…Adam looked towards Alice. ‘ If she wants to go, we‘ll go.’ Up for anything, Adam grinned towards the others sitting at the table, particularly at Scott to try and make him feel welcome.

Well, I‘m up for anything you guys want to do…”, Adam couldn’t help but smile at hearing Cailen’s voice. Out of everyone, Adam certainly needed to reconnect whatever remnant of a friendship that could be restored. Not that it was likely after proposing to Alice during his sister’s wedding reception. ‘
I‘ll be feeling the sting of that one for the rest of my life.’, Joking in that thought, Adam turned his head towards Winnie just as Alice’s phone began to ring inside of her purse. Oddly enough, Alice peeked into her purse and didn’t silence the device right away.

Would you guys excuse me for just one moment? I have to take this call, I’ll be right back.” ‘
Where are you going? I thought this was important to you?’, Adam could feel an odd twinge of anger festering in his chest, before worry overtook him. If this was an important phone call, he had to wonder what it was about. ‘ Is that Dr. Cox?’, the idea of Alice being ill was the only thing that popped into Adam’s mind when she was in the bathroom, and with this suspicious behavior, how could he not come to the same conclusion? All Adam knew was that something was horribly wrong, and he should follow after her.

As Alice stood and flitted from the room, Adam started to scoot his chair back when Winnie opened her mouth to speak, and stopped him in his place.

I just…wouldn‘t want to be a tag-along or anything. And they all seem a little stressed, don‘t they?”, As she was speaking very softly, it was a wonder Adam heard anything at all, let alone what he believed he heard come from Winnie’s mouth. ‘
Did I hear that right?’, Adam was about to ask, but rethought that idea. ‘ Best not seem rude.’, Knowing that admitting to hearing a bit of her statement might embarrass her, Adam smiled and sat back down. If Alice wanted him to follow, she would have stated so. In any regard, if Alice didn’t come back in five minutes he was going to go after her.

So, how long have you two…”, Adam raised his right hand to point back and forth between Cailen and Winifred as if to say the word ‘together‘. Perhaps just talking more to Winnie might make her feel more welcomed. That being his goal, Adam smiled at Winnie before turning his attention towards Skylar as she returned from wherever she disappeared to. Offering her a smile as well. About to say something kind or ordinary to initiate a conversation with her as well, he opened his mouth to say something when Alice returned with the brightest joy shining in her face. His heart was warmed and a smile formed on his own face…before she opened her mouth, and the light left his face.

I just got the offer of a lifetime! An old buyer of mine wants me to spend six months travelling in Europe to do some paintings for her!”,
Oh…f*ck…

Life just became much more complicated, and all Adam could do was sit there and watch her shining face.

As Cailen was waiting to see what Winnie wanted to do, he listened to Bella and Scott talk about his band playing in the park later tonight. It sounded like it could be fun. It was somewhere where they could all hang out in a relaxed setting. It would also be nice so if they wanted they could break off into smaller groups. Cailen really wanted to catch up with Skylar and talk to her, but he felt it would be easier to talk to her if they weren’t in front of everyone. This dinner was a great idea to get everyone back together again, but it seemed like they were all too uncomfortable to talk in front of everyone.

Cailen listened to Scott explain the concert. It was hard to take him seriously the way he talked. Every time he spoke, Cailen couldn’t help but think Skylar could do better than him. Cailen didn’t know why he disliked Scott so much, he hardly even knew him, yet he already made so many assumptions about him. It disgusted him when he saw Scott nuzzle his nose against Skylar’s cheek, and he had to look away. When he heard Skylar speak, her reaction seemed odd. Something was wrong, he knew as she got up and left the table. Cailen had the urge to go after her, like he had done times before, but he stopped himself. What would that look like if he followed after her?

He was so focused on Skylar’s sudden leave that he almost missed Winnie’s answer to his question. She seemed excited about it, which made Cailen happy. He was nervous because she was usually a really outgoing person, but hadn’t really talked much so far. But then, no one else was really saying much either so it was so abnormal. He watched Winnie out of the corner of his eye as she fiddled around and secretly straightened her fork before tapping his arm. His smile slowly faded as he heard her speak to him about not wanting to be a tag-along. The thought of her being a tag-along seemed preposterous to Cailen, but to the others that might be what they were thinking. “Of course I think you should come. Everyone does seem to be a little, on edge, but I think it’s just because we are seeing each other after such a long time. Everything should smooth out after a while.” He said quietly to Winnie.

When Alice spoke up and said how Winnie was welcome, Cailen was relieved. To have someone, other than himself, tell her that she was welcome was good to hear. He hoped that everyone else felt the same. It wasn’t long after that, when Alice’s phone went off and she left the table to take the call. Cailen didn’t have time to ponder what could be so important before Adam asked a question. He could sense what Adam was asking and that seemed to make things awkward. Does everyone think that Winnie and I are a couple? Cailen remembered introducing her as his friend, but of course a “friend” could be taken in many ways. The truth was that they weren’t together, they were just good friends.

Cailen never really thought of Winnie being something more than a friend. He just never seemed to like her in that way. Not that she wouldn’t be a great girlfriend, right now Cailen thought they would be better as just friends. He was going to say something, when he saw Skylar return to the table. Something didn’t look right, but just then Alice too returned to the table all happy and beaming. When she stated about the offer she just received, Cailen really didn’t know what to think. He was happy for her, that her career was headed in s good direction, but he was mad that she would think of leaving. She was that one who tried to get them all back together again, it would be likely that if she left, they would all go back to their own lives again and never see each other. How could she think of leaving at a time like this? Then again, how could I be so selfish to think that she shouldn’t grab onto this opportunity? “That’s great Alice, congratulations,” he said with as much sincerity and enthusiasm as he could. Cailen knew he should be happy for her, but he didn’t want her to leave, not for so long.

User ImageThe fear that was displayed on Skylar’s face from her brief loss of sight was clearly obvious to anyone who happened to walk by. Skylar hoped no one would of course. How was she supposed to explain herself? Of course her luck wasn’t the best. Some random person had decided to come up to her. ”Miss, are you alright?” Putting on her best smile, Skylar turned to this person and shook her head. ”I’m fine. Thank you for asking. “ The person left but kept looking back at her as if they had made a wrong choice in leaving her.

Taking a deep breath, Skylar prepared herself to go back into the restaurant. She took a minute to calm herself. She couldn’t be going in there looking distressed in the least bit. No one could know anything. She shook lightly to relieve herself of the small amount of stress that was still attached to herself. ”Ok, Sky, time to go back in.” She whispered lightly under her breath. The first step going back inside seemed to talk forever but soon she was walking through the doors and heading back over to the table.

Skylar offered a small smile to anyone who glanced at her when she returned. ’I’m fine. See? I’m smiling. Nothing to worry about.’She at least hoped this was what her smile was doing. At the moment she definitely didn’t feel like going to a concert after this. She wanted to crawl into bed and just let this whole dreaded day be over with. But there was another part of her that completely disagreed with the first part. This side said that she needed to go out and have some fun. Shake off all the stress she was causing herself. Live a little. It was then that she decided to just go along with everyone else. If everyone else, wanted to go to the concert, then she would too.

Skylar turned her attention to Alice when she returned to the table. It was at that moment that Skylar even realized that Alice had been gone in the first place. The smile on her face made it clear that she was ecstatically happy about something. Of course, it didn’t take her long before Alice revealed what that something was. Sky couldn’t help but smile in Alice’s direction. That was great for her. Even though all this time had passed, Sky could still be happy for her once best friend. ”That’s great, Alice.” She didn’t know what else to say or if she should say anything more.
