She couldn't fight it, though she tried. Everything in the world faded into darkness.

Checking that she was truly out, Mary then went to join Taphos. They found a close spot and the small familiar began digging a grave. Mary offered her own blood to the ground, softening it, to make the digging easier.
Once they had a hole that was large enough, Mary moved around to Acacia's rump and grabbed the mare's tail in her mouth. With a good grip, she dragged the heavy body closer to the hole. At the lip, she let go and moved to push, Taphos scrambling to help her.
Once Acacia was in the grave, Goddess and familiar began burring her hindquarters. Once the young mare was under a blanket of stone and rock, with only her forefront clear, Mary pulled a hair from her own head, and one from Acacia's. She learned from Shilo. By binding their hair together, she would form a powerful talisman that would link her to her child, bring their hearts closer together.
Taphos made a rope of the hairs and some grasses. Mary fetched a bell and set it up, attaching the rope to the bell on one side. She slid the other side of the rope into Acacia's mouth. Then MAry and Taphos finished burring the limp mare.
Satisfied, Mary, her mirror, and Taphos went to find a secure location from which to watch. Perhaps the error with Shilo had been that he had seen her at once. After all, Mary herself had needed some time to adjust to her new powers before interacting with anyone. Doubtful that Acacia would have as much adjusting as Mary did, still, she would give this child a chance.

She could hear her sister's voice. It wasn't the same as the last time she had heard it. Back then it was the voice of a child, but now grown and sure of it's self it spoke to her. The words weren't quite tangible, but they conveyed an emotion. She needed to move, she couldn't be still--not now. There was something very important about not being still.
Slowly, she found herself surfacing, but when her eyes tried to open tiny flecs of dirt threatened to fall in. She attempted to jerk her head away, but she couldn't move very fair, but something like a tinkling of a bell pealed out to her.
She tried to move, but found restriction everywhere and when she took a deep breathe, small particles of dirt shot into her nose.
Then the realization came across her suddenly. She had done it. She had buried her...alive.

Mary heard the bell and smiled to herself. The child was awake. Soon. Very very soon the child would rise, and then she would be one with Mary's other children, her first test would be passed. Wonderful.

Acacia started taking short, breaths very slowly. Moving her legs back and forth just a little to try to make room. The dirt felt too packed though, too confining. But she had to get out!
The bell pealed louder and louder. Her breathe was more ragged but she seemed to be making some small progress.

Mary smiled and watched, settled in and hidden. This was always one of the most exciting parts of being a Goddess, watching the rebirth of her children. What would emerge from that grave?

How long could she last down here? How much time would she have left? She had to move quickly and efficiently. Each movement had to be thought out--but quickly. Little by little she made progress though her legs were screaming in agonizing pain. How far was she now? Could she make it?
She had to keep moving, keep trying!

She dug her hoof in deeper int the dirt, and a cool wind touched her hoof. She could feel herself gasping harder. But the air! She was almost there! She kicked and struggled harder, moving her head closer to the surface despite the agony.
Almost there!

Mary stretched quietly and watched. Soon, any minute now. It wasn't all together unlike watching a bird hatch from its egg. The small little hole, then would come a resting period, that agonizing time where anyone with a heart would want to reach in and help. But you couldn't help a bird hatch. Mary had learned that when she was still mortal. She had kicked at the shell to widen the hole and... well... when she had been mortal, she had mourned the trampled little thing. Now that she was a Goddess, she kept the lesson close, and was impressed by the distance it managed. So she would not help this child hatch from the grave. She would watch, and once the child was reborn by earth, she would approach, and they would begin the next trial, rebirth by water.

Acacia's foot broke the surface, and she felt a trickle of air along her leg. Pushign harder, she shoved her head up through the earth gasping. She laid there panting for a few minutes before pushing her body further up. She got her body half-way out and laid there panting. The world was spinning, tumbling headlong and black spots swam before her eyes.
She was almost free. With one final pull, she flopped free of the earth trying to catch her breath. She needed to run, she needed to but she just...couldn't.

Mary watched the heaving Soq on the soil, filthy, covered with the dirt of her hatching, the shell of her new life. Mary was quite impressed. So few proved worthy, made it this far. She trotted over and nuzzled her child's dirt spattered nose lovingly, almost matronly. That she kept blocking and unblocking the clogged nose and mouth of the other.... well... no true child of hers would have survived this long to die from something so minor as that.
"Welcome back, my child," Mary crooned, her tail swishing with pleasure.
Taphos hopped onto the heaving flank of the filthy other, and began scrapping the dirt from her, heedless of the sharpness of claws that took away skin nearly as often as filth.

How am I alive?
The words swelled in her mind. She felt sick, and out of breath. She coudlnt' even push away the mare as she cleaned the dirt from her or the vile little raccoon that was scrapping off dirt and flesh.
The crooning of my child, my dear...my child. She couldn't stand it, but she couldn't fight it right now. She coudln't hardly breathe. Pulling in deep shuddering breaths, she listened for a few moments.
"What...happens....now?" Her eyes cuts into the mare like fire. She was angry but afraid. She had to wait.

"Now you settle, you rest," Mary crooned at her. "You went through a lot, you need to get used to your new strength. You're stronger now then you've ever been. You'll get stronger yet. Rest, then you will join me until the time comes for your next test." Mary nuzzled her once more then stepped back.
