She nodded once, pleased. "Then come. You will have the rare honor of helping to dig your own grave."

He followed her to where she told him to dig. Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to be calm as he slowly and deliberately shoveled the dirt out of the way. She was expecting him to get in the grave and be buried. And he had to do it, he just had to hold on long enough to think she'd leave and dig his way out. He could get out if he was careful...it was better to face it calmly.
If he didn't...well, he was pretty sure he'd wake up underground right before suffocating--if he even woke up at all. That was not a chance worth taking. So it was going to be risky, but it was the best chance.
The minutes dragged on as he pulled the dirt out. He stopped only a few feet down. When he was covered he'd only be two feet from the surface. He could make it out of that...at least, well he thought he could.
"So," he spoke calmly. "I guess...I get in now?"
Think, Bedford, think his mind chanted. Was there another way to escape? Was there something better than this? Or was this really his best chance? He searched his mind quickly, but this really was his only idea...though a rather scary one. He just had to hope he'd be alright--that he could make it out.
I can do this, he chanted in his mind. I can do this.

"Six feet is traditional, my child, an it is not quite wide enough yet for you to lay down fully. We are almost there, I assure you," Mary all but purred, adding more of her blood to the soil to soften it. "I know how eager you are. I am quite proud of you, my child. You are right, of course, you will make an excellent follower once you rejoin me above the soil." She nodded to the familiar. "Taphos, fetch the bell, if you would." As the small raccoon darted into the underbrush, she resumed digging. "she will be back very shortly, the bell is important for the ritual, you see. If you cannot dig yourself out, simply ring for my assistance, my child."

Six feet. He could feel his mouth go dry. Okay, six feet. He continue digging, feeling the anxiety bubbling up in him again. "So if I can't...get out. You'll help me?" He asked tenatively. That seemed....too easy.

Her head tilted to one side as she paused in the digging to regard him. "Do you not know the tradition of the bell?" she asked him, watching her new child.

Bedford rummaged around in his mind, "I don't think I have. Tell me about it?" That's what he needed to do--buy more time.

"The tale of the bell is best told in two parts, my child, though I did believe that all knew the first. The bell is an alert, as I had one upon my grave, so too shall those who follow in the path of a true believer. The bell is for when you fear, for when you feel that you cannot come out on your own. You pull the bell to signal your weakness, to herald it. The bell alerts those who wait to your situation. Ringing the bell is the best way to get out of the grave, should you try and fail first. But do try first. Before you ring the bell, do all that you can on your own. The test serves to make you better then you were, my child."

Bedford could feel his heart hammering inside of his chest. Surely, he had heard her wrong? Surely, it wasn't really true...but with a sickening lurch in his stomach as he looked at her angry eyes, he knew..."You were buried alive."
He could feel his mouth dry, as if he'd never drank water. He could already feel himself chocking on dirt as he stood there looking at her. She was going to bury him and leave him. Would she really let him out if he rang the bell? Somehow, some fear said no inside of him.
He turned to run, his feet shooting out in front of him.

The small raccoon Familiar dashed out of the bushes in his path, a bell with a rope in its mouth. She reared up, claws shining between the flecks of dried blood on them, her eyes narrowed. Mary swung the mirror around behind Taphos as she approached, coming up over his shoulder. "tut tut now, child."

Bedford found himself face to face with her again. He slammed his hooves in the ground, tried to ground them around so he could run but it wasn't working. His ankle gave a sickening twist. He fell to the ground in a heap, panting with pain and unable to get away.

"Fear is natural, my child," she crooned, nuzzling his fallen form. "But you grow by facing the things that scare you, doing them anyway, and winning through. This is how you escape fear, for when you confront every fear and win, you have nothing left to fear. Come, rise, and help us finish the grave. Be better than you are, my child. The Dark Goddess is here for you." she nipped his ear, perhaps it was meant to be affectionate, but there was far too much tooth in it to be relaxing.

He felt the blood drip from where she had nipped him. He took a deep steadying breath, "But I don't think I'm worthy. I need more time before this comes to pass...I won't survive it yet. Just a few days, and I could be ready." Or maybe push her in the hole or have a better idea.

"Do not doubt your Goddess, child," she chastised with a hint of a non-equine sounding growl to her words. Or perhaps that sound had come from Taphos. Mary bit his ear again, and this time there was no question that it meant to induce pain, not reassurance. "I know best your time. If it is not now, you will not survive. Let us delay no longer. Doubt and hesitation shorten your life, child. Trust in your Goddess if you wish to be better than you are. Your body as it is now, is more a trap than any grave. Shed who you are, leave it in the dirt and emerge a stronger spirit.

Pain seared through him. He wanted to tell her he was perfectly fine, that he didn't need to gain strength or anything. If he could grab a branch, he's show her just how strong he was.
If he could not delay though, he'd have to break for it or endure. "Fine," he said breathless.
