Entry 30

Berry dropped by my room once more that night to let me know we were going to be leaving in the morning. She hugged me and told me to sleep well before disappearing down the hall toward her own room. I had already made sure that everything I wanted to take with me was already packed. It was a rather small pile. A couple of bags really. Some clothing. My journal. I was planning on grabbing my sword in the morning before we left. I wandered over to the window to look out at the starry sky one last time before I left. Holding the image of the familiar view of the bright stars in my mind I crawled into my bed and tried to sleep.

After a night of tossing and turning before finally falling into unconsciousness at some ungodly hour I was up bright and early. I brushed out my hair and dressed smartly for the day. Gathering my few things I made my way through the castle corridors until I found myself blinking in the early morning sunlight of the courtyard. The gold car was sitting there with the trunk open and already filled with bags. I watched in confusion as Berry stuffed a final bag in.

She saw me watching her and motioned me over. She took my bags and slipped them into the last spaces left in the trunk. She then informed me that my sword would have to be wrapped and stuck carefully into the cab. She closed the trunk and shooed me off to the barracks to retrieve my sword. I took off at a jog and returned more slowly a moment later with my sword. Berry helped me maneuver it in behind the seats. Then in we climbed.

As we sat in the car and she started to pull out of the yard I couldn't help but ask why she had all the stuff packed in the trunk. With a big grin she informed me that she was going to be staying in the city with the rest of us. When I questioned about Syl, she informed me that she would be fine with Master Craig. I was unsure about that but what could I say. We were already on the way.

Entry 31

The ride into the city was a long one. Though it wasn't as long as it could have been. Berry's driving tends to cover distances faster than most. I love her but she can be crazy. The conversation for most of the way was pretty light. I believe she prefers to spend her drives listening to that loud music that both she and the cat-boy seem to share a taste in. When we did chat it was about things like what I would want to study in school, if I even wanted to go to a public school. Or if I would want to be home-schooled. She also told me a little about how tight our living arrangements were going to be for a while. Apparently d**k is in the process of looking for someplace a little bigger so we'll all fit without stepping on each others toes.

As we went through the streets I tried to memorize the twists and turns we took so that I could find my way back out if I ever needed too. My trips to the city, until now, have been few and brief. I know I've lived in a castle but, the sheer size of some of the buildings are a little overwhelming when you're at the base and looking straight up. It didn't take too long to make it to the apartment complex d**k lives in once we were actually in the city limits. The building itself isn't that bad.

It only took us one trip to carry my things up the stairs to the apartment. Ara was the only home so I got quite a happy welcome. It seems that Gabriel and Elliotte like to spend their evenings dogging around behind d**k while he tries to work. We got my things settled into the room I am going to be sharing with d**k. I was assured that no one was going to mind the sleeping arrangements for the time we had left for staying there. I was very tired, so after aquick meal with Berry and Ara I decided to head to bed. I'm sure I'll have plenty of time tomorrow to get my bearings in my new home.

Entry 32

The first couple of days of settling in quickly proved just how cramped and small the apartment actually was. It was still during the week so at least the other three dreams were at school for most of the time during the day. When everyone was home it was loud and cramped. Before and after school there was always a flurry of activities with everyone in their own tornado of book bags and homework. My strange loneliness was almost instantly relieved. I almost dread the upcoming weekend though. I guess at least some of the time people will have their own things to do. Except me. My idleness is starting to get to me now.

It only took a couple of nights of helping Ara and even occasionally Gabe with homework before I began to long for something of my own to do. Cat-boy never asked for help, though of course I never expected him to. Too much pride. Or he just doesn't need it, not that I even begin to imagine that to be the case. When I mentioned that I might want to do something as well to Berry it almost looked like she let out a breath of relief. She mentioned something about maybe a few classes at Ara's school or even maybe something from a community college. It might be interesting to see what all the fuss about school is actually about.

Since there really isn't room for any sort of weapon practice I had to come up with some other way to let out my energy. I've taken up running. I prefer to do it in the very early morning or late evening. There are fewer people about to give me strange looks. It has helped with my knowledge of the layout of the surrounding city at least. It helps me feel a little less lost among this jungle of concrete and steel. I'm going to have to see if I can find a park or something nearby so I can spend some time with trees again.

Entry 33

I've been spending a little bit of time with Gabriel lately. Despite the company he normally keeps I think he's an alright companion. it started when we were left home alone together one afternoon. We talked a bit then went out for refreshments. However before that he suggested that I pick up some sort of random new hobby.

Without much to do around the house, since I haven't looked into starting any schooling or such yet, I've taken to listening to music. I never realized before how greatly I enjoy the sound of stringed instruments. More particularly, the violin. With the sounds from the king of strings and Gabe's suggestion murmuring through my head I decided to ask my mother about learning how to play the violin.

Imagine my surprise when she all but pounced on me.
"That's a great idea, London!" she exclaimed to me. "I think I know just the person to teach you, too."
She was so excited. She claimed it would suit me well. I guess tomorrow we are going to go look into purchasing one for me. She mentioned something about meeting the person who is to teach me at the instrument store to help choose one that would suit me best for learning. I haven't really had anything to look forward to since moving into the city so I guess I'm a little excited about this.

Entry 34

Today was very eventful. I rose at the same time the others in the house were getting ready for school. Very quietly, so as not to disturb the recently asleep d**k, I gathered my clothes and patiently waited for Ara to finish in the bathroom so I might shower. Once clean and dressed I went to the kitchen to hunt down what scraps of food were left after the morning rush. Mother brushed me out of the kitchen and pushed me into a chair in the dining area. She kissed the top of my head as she put a plate of eggs and sausage in front of me. I thanked her before eating it with gusto.

She commented on my excitement and after I finished we put on our shoes and left the house. As we drove to the violin shop she commented on how I should eventually learn to drive. I politely brushed the comment aside. I'm not terribly interested in cars. I guess I will eventually have to learn. But not for the moment. From there I tried to turn the conversation toward my new teacher. But she deftly avoided my questions. Apparently I learned polite evasion from her. We chatted lightly about what I might want to look for in a school the rest of the way there.

The shop was small and out of the way. The only parking was directly on the street in front of it. As she parked I discreetly looked around hoping for a chance to see a glimpse of my new music teacher. I didn't see anyone so I could only assume he was inside the shop. My suspicions were confirmed as we entered the shop and my mother all but flew across the place and into the arms of a tall fellow with dark unruly looking hair. After their friendly hug was done I went over to introduce myself.

"Hello," I began, "my name is London."
"Mathias." He replied. "But please call me Mat."
"Nice to meet you." We shook before he continued.
"So you're my student. I suppose we should look around to see if we can find anything to suit you."

After about 20 minutes of looking around he shook his head. "You won't find what you need hear. I think I have just the thing at home. If you're patient I'll bring it by in a bit and we can get you acquainted with her."
I nodded not really understanding why I needed something so specific. I was taught that anyone who was good at something should be able to produce at least good results even with limited resources. I guess I don't really know much about music besides listening to it though. So without even an hour passing we were back in the car and heading home.

Entry 35

It wasn't a long wait between the time we got home and my new mentor showed up. Berry opened the door to his sparkling blue eyes. I politely waited in the living room until they decided to join me. When they did my eyes instantly settled on the case that Mat was carrying. It was leather, dark and worn. Without preamble he set it in front of me.

"Open it." he said. "I'm just lending her to you until you get your own."

Slowly I undid the latches. Carefully I lifted the cover. Inside, nestled on worn wine colored velvet was the most beautiful instrument I had ever seen. The top of spruce was varnished in a rich dark color. The ebony fingerboard was a beautiful compliment. I know I must have stared at if for several minutes before Mat shook me from my admiration.

"You can touch it you know. It won't fall apart. It was one of my first that I got for myself."

He let me pull it out, warning me to touch the varnish as little as possible to avoid eroding it with finger oils. It was terribly light and felt more fragile than it looked. He let me look it over in my hands for a few moments before he took it from me and put a little piece of wood under the strings. Apparently it gets taken out for long storage. He decided he was just going to show me how to set it up and tune it for the day. He did so deftly. It seemed like only minutes had passed before he loosened the hair in the bow and showed me how to stow the instrument to avoid damage. With a promise to come back tomorrow he left, leaving the case behind.
