That little whine was relatively adorable. Ren held back a smile, tapping a finger on the book he held. Gabrian would be beside himself right about now, he thought in amusement. Him and his weakness for anything and everything cute and adorable. I'm pretty sure Jove fits right into the category right there.
Jove's ears had fallen to the side now, looking relatively despondent at the whole situation. He still hadn't said anything, but Ren did not mind. This form of communication might be a bit trickier to understand, but with a little practice he was sure he'd be able to pick it up.
Ren watched him carefully. After a few beats, Jove gave the tiniest of nods, his face turning scarlet in color. With a reassuring smile, Ren reached out, putting his hand atop the younger boil's head and rifling his hair affectionately.
"Don't worry," he said with a wink. "We'll have you balancing mathematics tables and yammering on about historical things in no time. I've got your back, Freckles."

Jove reflexively flinched away from the hand, but once it was on his head he seemed comforted by the action. It calmed his worries somewhat. The pup gave Ren a gentle smile, the first since their meeting. And it wasn't just a smile with his eyes either, the corners of his mouth actually turned up slightly as he favoured Ren with the rare sight. It was a grateful "Thank you," if anything.
He sighed again, this time it was a calmer expression of "things might be okay now." And then he flopped over so he leaned up against Ren's side. His little body weighed almost nothing, being composed of little more than ectoplasmic fluff, but even that slight pressure was a comfort. The little pup wagged his tail slightly.
As if he would EVER yammer...
