He nodded, readying his muscles for the ride of their lives. For a brief moment, he wondered if Karis felt his musculature and if she would admire how powerful he was, and then he brushed the thought aside. The time for goofiness was over--he was in a deadly situation with someone to protect, and he would ask her another time. "Hold on tight!" he growled and leaped, slightly losing his footing due to the additional weight on his back.

But, now that he had the idea, he began to leap from branch to branch with pure ease, edging closer to the opening as the wolf followed them from below. He had to time this perfectly or things would become worse. "You must trust me," he spoke quietly, trying to show her that he would never do her wrong. Having doubt would only make things worse, after all. Karis's plan was all they had, but it would have to do. Their lives were forfeit otherwise--a giant great grey wolf versus a couple of smaller Ulaya?

He would totally pass this down as a story to his daughter later. He wasn't sure if she would believe him, but he figured he'd just bring Karis along as proof. They were almost there now--"Get ready, Karis! I'm going to count, ok?" he warned as they got close enough where he could leap from the trees. "Karis, I'm counting 3... 2... 1...!!" He landed on the ground and with a small roar, "RUN!!!" He took off as fast as he could, trying to guide his companion in the direction they had been heading for--the cave. Evening had finally fallen, and the cold weather would seep into their bodies soon enough.

Just before she heard the "RUN", she had already loosened her hold and moved to launch herself. As she heard the final N of that word, her paws hit the ground. While she wasn't very strong, she was considerably fast. She had learned to be fast and very good at running away. This was how she survived being on her own most of the time. It was apparently a gift that came to her aid at this very moment. She didn't even look at him or say a word. She hoped he wouldn't have thought it rude of her, but she was busy trying to stay alive.

She could almost FEEL the wolf gaining right on their hind legs. She then furrowed her face and started to dig her front paws harder every time they hit. She was pushing herself to be even faster than her very fastest. She was almost sure if she ever had been standing next to someone running as fast as herself; they would look like a huge blur of purple. The thought made her grin wryly as she started to run in quick dodged movements to prevent the wolf from being able to exact any kind of biting or swiping on her.

She was so close to the cave; she could almost see it. "Just... a liiitttttllee... fartherrrrr....." She let out a whispered war cry as she pushed herself into making that last little feet. She knew before she went headfirst into it; she needed to be sure Chiyuki would be making as quick time. She thought she had been hearing the beat of his feet not too far from hers, but she had become engrossed in her own thoughts. She wasn't sure all of a sudden.

The cave! He could see it--they were almost there! This was the fastest he'd ever run in his life, save for the time when he was chasing a rather quick rabbit some seasons ago. He had similar abilities to a leopard, but he was no cheetah either. His entire family were leopards; they were better at climbing trees than running, but for once, he wished he were like a cheetah--the speed was much needed. Out of the corner of his eye Karis was a purple blur; she moved fast, that one.

He couldn't tell if the wolf was close on their heels or a few feet behind them, but he knew that if they could just get to the cave--there! He tumbled in, rolling head over tail until he came to a stop against a wall. Panting, he straightened himself out as he strained to hear Karis's foot falls. She was quick, so he was sure she probably made it to the cave... As his eyes adjusted to the darkness of the cave, he began to carefully scent out his companion, praying she had tumbled in with him, or at least ran in at the last second.

In the meantime, he knew without a doubt he was safe. The wolf would run by the cave, simply because only Ulaya would be able to see this particular cavern. It was a small cavern, big enough to fit a few Ulaya--around three or four--but too small for anything bigger. It was a tight fit for four Ulaya, but for two of them, it was comfortable and warm for this kind of weather. "Karis?" he whispered, loud enough for her to hear but quiet enough that the wolf outside wouldn't hear it.

Karis lay limply plastered on the floor. She was panting heavily from all the running. Her bangs laying flat and droppy in her eyes. Her front paws stretched as far forward as possible and hind legs stretched out behind her.

She heard Chiyuki call her name, and she gave a mewling cry of a voice. "I'm... here....I think... I would like a nap. Just a little one..." She was completely tuckered out now. She couldn't remember another time she had to push herself so hard to run that fast.

And, as she laid there just spacing out and allowing her adrenaline to flush out, she tilted her head a little and looked around for her friend, who she was thinking was her saving grace. "Chiyuki... We did so good. We make a good team." Then, she gave a yawn and a soft sigh.

Relief flooded his being as he heard Karis's soft cry along with her harsh breathing from running so hard. He himself had just managed to keep his own labored breathing down to a minimum, though his heart continued to thud rapidly against his chest.

Both of them had had quite the mini-adventure there, he mused. Checking the opening of the cavern, night had finally fallen, with the moon and the stars shining softly, casting a strange light across the outside world.

Making his way over to where Karis laid, he yawned and chuckled. "That we did... that we did..." Another yawn and he was out like a light. He needed to recover from that bit of a thrill, especially since both Karis and himself would be hungry tomorrow morning--he needed to be rest in order to go hunting for them both.

All the energy they used today would come as a full force of hunger. I wonder what my sisters and daughter would think if they saw me now... His last thought made him smile in his sleep before he completely fell away from the real world.
