Claire watched him work out for several moments before she looked back down at Zeus. It felt a bit awkward to watch a guy work out who was old enough to be her own father, and that was the same reason she didn't bother working out herself. "That's awful," she commented. "The poor thing.. I hope it was alright." She didn't know what she would do if anything happened to Odette, or even Zeus, even though the Pikachu was much newer and still got on her nerves quite often.

"I can agree on that though, trying to explain something to a pokemon is next to impossible. Well, for most." She couldn't explain anything to Odette no matter what, but the bird was loyal to a fault and would do whatever she could for her owner, even if she didn't know what exactly Claire was asking. Zeus, on the other hand, seemed to be much more intelligent, so she could do at least a little explaining and simple threats for him.

As he went on about the specific pokemon, she nodded her head at the things she had at Galactic too before leaving. She'd had a couple other pokemon, but had only time to gather her absolutely essential things. Odette was obviously essential. "What about Snow?" The young woman asked, turning once more to look at Luke. It wasn't exactly polite to talk to someone without making eye contact if you weren't busy, or at least that's how she felt. "Does he like you, or is he confused that his owner acts completely different sometimes?" That had to be extremely confusing for the young pokemon, now that she thought about it. Poor thing.

Luke raised an inward eyebrow at Claire's response. Odd that she would be so sympathetic towards a pokemon she had never known. He couldn't help but think it would be better if the Piplup weren't all right. If it ever met Lucas again, it was not unlikely that the encounter would turn to bloodshed...

He nodded, "Merry's bright, likely because she's so old. I'm grateful for that. Means that she'll listen to me even though she doesn't like me." The Chimecho's Hypnosis had proven useful on more than one mission.

He backed away from the bags and resumed stretching. "Snow?" He had to think about that one. He hadn't actually interacted with the Charmander directly, had he? "I believe the last time we spoke was the first Snow saw of me. I'm not really sure how he feels."

"That's good, at least," she said as violet eyes looked back down to Zeus, and she leaned on the treadmill lightly. She snorted slightly as a thought occurred to her. "I highly doubt Odette would ever listen to anyone else. Zeus might, but Odette definitely wouldn't." No, the bird was much too vain and opinionated to take orders from anyone except her beloved trainer - the only exception being if her owner said to follow the orders of a specific other person.

"Oh? Care to see?" She asked suddenly, watching Luke curiously. She had no idea why, but for some reason she wanted to battle him. Perhaps... No, she had no idea, but she wanted to. "Zeus could battle Snow and see how he does taking orders from you. It'd be good to know if he will or not before you need him in the field." A pokemon that didn't obey on a mission was extremely counterproductive and a potential liability instead of an asset, so it was imperative that Snow obeyed both trainers.

...nope, still crazy.

"What if you were two people? Would she listen to both, do you think?" He was pretty much just messing with her now, but it was an interesting thought to consider.

He finished his stretches and looked once more to the shelved pokeballs, brow furrowed slightly. "I've never battled recreationally myself, but I suppose it's worth a go..." First battle for both pokemon and trainer? It sounded like a disaster waiting to happen, but it made sense to accustom Snow to battle. One day the little Charmander would be a Charizard, a force to be reckoned with, and if it couldn't follow orders well, it would cause all sorts of trouble. He moved towards the shelves and retrieved his glasses from where he had left them, placing them on his eyes.

Claire snorted slightly at the question, turning to Luke with a small smirk. "I think you like messing with my head. But, I think she would - she'd probably be confused, but since I'd still look like me she more than likely would." Odette would probably be extremely confused and very suspicious, but she was loyal to a fault.

"I don't battle often myself, but it's good to know how a pokemon will act on the field beforehand, instead of waiting until you're on the field to find out." That wouldn't be a good idea at all.

"Ready Zeus?" Claire asked of the Pikachu before suddenly turning off the machine, causing the pokemon to stumble off the front of the treadmill as it stopped unexpectedly. He frowned at his trainer, but glad to be off the death machine. It had been a good warm up though, and he had plenty of energy to battle whatever the - wait, wasn't this 'Snow' they were talking about that Charmander? This would be too easy...

He nodded. There was a lot to it that would compel a pokemon to obey, after all, such as voice and scent in addition to appearance. It would probably throw off a less loyal pokemon, though, and Luke supposed that was all the more reason to establish some kind of dominion over Snow.

With a shrug, he took Snow's pokeball into his hand and pressed the release switch. The little fire-type yawned and looked around himself sleepily. Hadn't they already gone to bed...?

"Snow, this is a practice battle." The sudden address of the familiar voice caught the Charmander's attention, and he turned to look as the man pulled a black rectangle from the assortment of things he had left on the shelf. He glanced at the display, making note of the moves Snow knew how to perform. "Ready when you are, I suppose," he announced, somewhat absent. He wasn't terribly comfortable with the idea of battling for no good reason. In the past his pokemon had always been a means of incapacitating, defending, or accomplishing some goal that would be impossible for a human. His fine assortment of firearms had kept battles to a minimum.

Snow studied Luke's face for a while longer before turning to Zeus, his expression thoroughly confused. Practice battles were an expected norm for a starter pokemon, though, and so he took some solace from that.

Claire watched Luke as he released the Charmander, a bit curious about his expression but shrugged it off. "We're ready as well," she said, violet eyes flitting over to the fire-type to study him for a moment. It seemed rather obvious that the little pokemon wasn't as strong as Zeus, and the young woman felt sort of bad to go first. If it was a real battle against an enemy she would have no qualms about knocking out a weaker pokemon as fast as possible, but since this was a practice battle with a friend - an acquaintance? Possibly friends, but with Luke it was hard to tell - she didn't want to take advantage of the situation. "You can go first."

Zeus gaped up at his trainer before folding his arms over his chubby stomach, pouting slightly at her words. This was a battle, wasn't it? He was supposed to rush in and win as soon as possible, right? Apparently that wasn't the case here.

"All right then." He looked up from the Pokedex display. "SmokeScreen."

Snow cast a glance at the trainer from over his shoulder. That was a command, right? It sounded like one. He turned back to the battlefield, breathing out a dark smog.

Claire nodded her head slightly before looking down at Zeus. "Thunder wave."

The Pikachu rolled his eyes in a melodramatic fashion - he hated Smokescreen - before he bounded towards the cloud of smoke that surrounded the Charmander. He coughed once or twice before his cheeks started sparking, and he sent a few bolts of electricity towards where he thought Snow was in an attempt to paralyze him.

The electricity surged through the air, reflecting off the particles of smoke that masked Snow's location. Snow was fortunate enough to watch the light show from a safe distance.

Luke frowned slightly. It was difficult to tell where the Charmander was when the thing was swallowed up by a cloud of darkness, and he faced a similar quandary in searching for the enemy. "Ember, full circle," he decided.

What did 'full circle' mean...? Snow chose to disregard that part of the command and... Oh, but where was the Pikachu? He breathed short blasts of hot embers in a half-circle around his body, hoping it would make contact somewhere along the line.

Luckily for Snow, his attack managed to connect with his target. "Chuu!" Zeus cried as he was met with a faceful of embers. He stumbled back with a cough, rubbing at his eyes furiously in an attempt to get the burning pain away from them.

Claire didn't seem too concerned at the pokemon's plight, probably because the attack was fairly weak anyway, and coming from a less powerful it was even less threatening. "Again," she ordered. She could just as easily order him to Thunderbolt the little Charmander, but that would sort of defeat the purpose of the practice battle.

Zeus shook his head furiously, blinking quite a bit as his eyes watered, but did as he was ordered. His cheeks sparked as he growled, and he discharged electricity in all directions with the hope Snow would be somewhere within the vicinity.

Snow had yet to move since delivering his ember attack, leaving him more than close enough to feel the Thunder Wave's effects. He uttered a slightly distressed "charrr!" as the charge rippled through his small body.

Luke heard the sound and folded his arms. Paralysis would be an inconvenience, but it at least meant they could attack head-on without worrying about the Pikachu's Static ability.

"Tackle."

Snow complied, throwing himself in the direction of Zeus's earlier cry.

Zeus smirked to himself when he heard his target cry out from being hit with the paralyzing attack, and he turned in the direction he thought the sound came from.

And was promptly tackled from the left.

He rolled over with a growl, but at least he knew exactly where his opponent was. His cheeks started sparking before --

"Zeus, Quick attack," Claire ordered quickly, noticing the sparks amidst the clouds of smoke.

The Pikachu was caught off-guard by the sudden command that was the exact opposite of what he'd been about to do. Regardless of what he'd been about to do, he obeyed his trainer and rushed towards the Charmander instead of electrocuting him.

Luke frowned as the Charmander reeled backwards from the swift blow. As the SmokeScreen began to dissipate, it was becoming easier and easier to see the combating pokemon. Perhaps that was working against them.

"SmokeScreen." The less visible the lower-leveled fire-type was, the better off it would be. Snow inhaled in preparation for the command's execution, but a surge of paralysis prevented him from completing it. He shivered slightly, dropping to all fours in an effort to hold his ground.

Luke bit back a growl of frustration. His trigger finger was screaming that it could end the whole ordeal quickly and efficiently if it could only find a gun. Heck, if he caught them off-guard he could probably manage to incapacitate - or at least immobilize - them without the aid of a firearm. An impatient foot began to tap irritably against the ground.

Claire could hear and, thanks to the dissipating smoke, see Luke's impatient actions, and figured it might be a good idea to end the practice battle as soon as possible. Maybe this had been one of those 'it seemed like a good idea at first' type of ideas... "Zeus, Thunderbolt."

Alright, finally! The Pikachu smirked as his cheeks started sparking violently, charging up the attack before loosing a large bolt of electricity towards the Charmander that he could actually see now.
