"I've been talking to the psychologist, Isadora, from time to time but, well... No real progress." He moved to unwrap Merry from his neck; the little Chimecho was warm, but he hadn't exactly been cold to begin with. "She figures there was a trigger that started it all when I was a kid, but since I can't remember the first time it happened..." It was more than a little frustrating that he had forgotten that thing that would explain why he kept forgetting things.

"You know, it happened just earlier too. I was sitting on the floor and then I was standing, but I don't remember getting up. It's kind of disconcerting, but I guess it's frequent enough that I'm used to it."

Claire nodded as she listened, still trying to wrap her head around everything he was telling her, but frowned when he explained further. No progress? That was rather depressing, and probably very distressing for Lucas. "That's an awful thing to have to deal with, I'm sorry." There really wasn't much for her to say beyond that, and she was never very good at comforting people about things.

"Wait.. It happened earlier?" Like... just when he stood up a few moments ago earlier, or earlier in the day earlier...? Her brows furrowed again at the thought, wracking her brains to think of something, anything that could've caused the lapse in memory if it was the first thought. "Do you mean just now, when you stood up? Or earlier today?"

"Yeah, just a little while ago." He gestured to the guitar. "I was sitting with the thing in my lap, and the next thing I knew I was standing and it was down there. Missed the first part of what you said, too." He ran a hand through his hair. "Like I said, I'm pretty much used to it. And it doesn't happen nearly as often since I joined Rocket, so that's nice." He wasn't completely convinced that Galactic hadn't put something in the water or... something.

Her gaze shifted to a particular tile on the floor, frowning at it as if she could solve everything by staring at it long enough, like it could explain everything for her. She was still having trouble coping with the fact he had indeed forgotten, or rather...

"Memory lapses?" She quizzed thoughtfully as she looked at him again, though the question was aimed at herself as well as the man before her. Her eyes flitted back to the floor again to give it a confused expression as she tried to recall every single thing that occurred between the start of their conversation up until he stood up. "Well, let's see... Do you know why this happens?" Was it something she'd said? No, he seemed to be talking in a consistent manner, so obviously it hadn't affected his half of the conversation at all. So then, what...?

"Oh! Maybe..." She paused, her eyebrows lifting as an idea popped into her head - perhaps sudden movements did it? She had jumped up rather suddenly, so maybe...? Violet eyes looked towards Lucas once more and quite suddenly she jumped a foot closer to him while flinging her right arm out. More like her right elbow, as her fist was clenched and the angle made by her upper and forearm was roughly a 90 degree angle. She was still several feet from him, of course, but perhaps the sudden movement would provoke the same sort of memory lapse. Would it have been a better idea to mention this to Lucas first? Probably, but then he would have expected it and probably would have a different reaction.

Lucas nodded, "Yeah, memory lapses, that's a good way to put it." He stepped away from the wall to better face his company, shaking his head 'no' at her question. "It seemed to happen a lot when I was talking to other elites and superiors, and I don't remember a single mission I've ever been on, but the trigger itself? No dice." He turned his head slightly when Claire seemed to realize something, a quiet "hm?" marking his curiosity. And then she moved, and Lucas moved almost simultaneously, moving to seize her right wrist and twist her arm behind her back.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 09, 2011 8:08 pm

His reaction was much quicker than she anticipated, and before she could even process what happened she found her only usable arm was locked behind her back, and she made a rather undignified squeak at the suddenness of his reaction. Claire simply froze, violet eyes widening slightly as her eyebrows raised as high as they could, extremely nervous. What exactly did Lucas do during these memory lapses..?

"Ah - Lucas?" She asked hesitantly, still refusing to move. It wasn't like she really had much of a choice, but she figured in this position... it would be much better not to struggle, just in case. "Could you, uh, let me go please..?"

Zeus stared, wide-eyed, before turning to Merry and Snow, pointing at the pair of humans with a glare aimed at the two pokemon. "Pika pi!" It was obvious he was confused, though blaming the man's two pokemon for the current situation. They were his pokemon, they knew what he acted like, and they should make him stop! Of course the Pikachu could just go bite or electrocute Lucas, but the former would get him in trouble, and the latter especially so because he'd also electrocute his trainer. Then he wouldn't get chocolate for a year.

A frightened "char!" was all Snow could say in reply, and Merry, who had been shaken free when her human moved so suddenly, brought her tiny arms to her tinier mouth formed into the shape of an upward-facing triangle. She jingled in alarm, attempting to draw her trainer's attention. Even the Chimecho who had been by his side for thirty years was hesitant to approach him when he was in that state.

Lucas heard something of a nervous voice asking to be released and, shortly thereafter, realized that he had Claire in an arm lock. "Oh man!" He immediately removed his hands and took several backpedaling steps. "Arceus! I'm so sorry!" He held his hands up, palms out, in an effort to allay any fear that he intended to hurt her. "Jeez... I-I didn't mean to-- I mean, what the hell just happened?"

The noises the pokemon made were secondary to the situation Claire found herself in, trying not to focus on the fact she was currently helpless or the fact her heart was racing. Thankfully for her it didn't take long for Lucas to come back to his senses and release her - as well as seem completely flabbergasted at the position he had her in. It seemed her idea had worked, though she had no intention of doing anything like that ever again. When he released her she straightened up and quickly inspected her arm - it didn't hurt, just surprised her, so she shook her head when he began apologizing.

"I'm fine," she ensured him, violet eyes turning from her good arm back onto his face, her gaze curious once more as her heart rate slowly went back to normal. "Well, what happened was I jumped towards you with my arm out and immediately found my arm twisted behind my back. I think it's safe to assume from that little experiment that the trigger - or at least one of them, because there may be more - is sudden movements. Or maybe more specifically, sudden potentially threatening movements." But then, that didn't explain why he had them in the offices of elites... She didn't recall ever being threatened in an office unless she had made a grave error - and she made very, very few of those.

It was all rather confusing, and the whole ordeal was giving Lucas a distinct sinking feeling. He would be released from the sensation shortly, though, for as Claire began speaking of the potential stimuli, all things faded to darkness and silence. Merry, who had been mid transit with the intent to return to her human's shoulder, stopped halfway when she noted the cold expression that had settled on his features. If Claire had paid much mind to his face during his earlier lunge, she would recognize it as the same.

"It's probably for the best if I don't know the exact cause," he said. His tone suggested that was more resolute than 'probably' in not understanding the true trigger.

Claire had indeed watched Lucas's face, before he was behind her range of vision of course, and did indeed recognize it as the same. Her brows furrowed again, a combination of confusion and curiosity on her face.

"Why is that..?" If he knew, then he could probably avoid those situations... right? At least knowing the stimuli would give him some peace of mind - a definite cause for these memory lapses. At least, the cause for ones he was having now, not the absolute start...

..wait. Was this... Why did he look like... again...

...what?

"Who..?" This made absolutely no sense at all - was he still having a memory lapse..? How could.. what..?

Claire's brain seemed to be short-circuiting.

"Why?" He folded his arms loosely across his chest as he repeated the question. "Why should I know? Knowing will either change nothing or return all of the buried memories. Neither is a positive outcome." His voice was nothing less than matter-of-fact, bordering on monotone, and not even the obvious confusion manifesting in Claire's head would bring a smirk to the hard, flat line of his lips. Her question of 'who' drew a snorted breath in response, but nothing more.

Her right hand reached up to lay a few fingers on her cheek as she watched him closely. She mentally, forcefully pushed aside her confusion, her wonder and her thoughts that threatened to confuse her further - that was the only thing such a mixture of racing thoughts and multiple emotions could do. Such a reaction could, and obviously was not getting her anywhere in the slightest except running herself in confusing circles.

Her brows furrowed thoughtfully as she pondered the situation, attempting to replace confusion with unemotional logic. If that even applicable in such a strange situation.

"Perhaps knowing that, you might more readily avoid dangerous situations? That could be positive," she pointed out. Not very likely, since he was in Team Rocket, but still - it could help that. She couldn't help but wonder what all these buried memories were, but if they were hidden so deep in his mind so as to incite... this sort of response as a sort of... defense mechanism? They had to be awful memories. Her brows knitted more. "I can't agree or disagree on the latter, though, because I don't know what you've been through."

She also ignored her last question, as that was obvious. This had to be some sort of defense to dangerous circumstances, or perhaps unsavory memories, but why? Maybe...

"Why do you do this? Not many people lock away memories and spans of time so readily or effectively. Is it because you don't think you--" in other words, the confused yet friendly Lucas, "-- can handle it..?"

"I don't need to avoid danger. That's why I'm here in the first place. And as long as I'm here, no danger matters."

Blue eyes flicked to the nervous Merry as she took up a wallflower position, waiting for her dear human to return to himself. He shifted his weight between his feet, his arms remaining crossed and a subtle but distinct curtain of sorrow descending on his features. "What would you do if you woke up one morning and realized that you had killed countless individuals throughout your life, among them the people who were most important to you?" The question was rhetorical, and he didn't wait for a reply. "He can't handle it. I know better that better than anyone. He can't handle it, and that's why I'm here."

That was true, at least - Lucas was there for the act same reason she herself was, and she knew that to be true now. She still wished she could forget the whole ordeal happened, but unfortunately that was impossible. "That's true.." Even if Lucas knew the reason for his memory lapses, they would still occur, apparently whenever they wanted. "I still think you might take comfort in knowing at least one reason for these episodes." She found it odd referring to him and yet talking about a different part of him, while still addressing... she shook her head slightly, trying to forget how crazy this whole situation was. This was all just a bad dream, right? Any moment she would wake up in her room, with Zeus snoring like a trumpet still.

If only.

"I think - you must know - how distressing it likely is. Do you think at least knowing the reason would alleviate some of that stress?" She couldn't help but think back on Lucas' face and his tone of voice when he'd asked, practically begged her to tell him what had happened at Galactic. The whole situation had to be extremely stressful, even if it was meant to be some roundabout way of self-defense.

She paused, studying the look on his face and noting how it changed. It was suddenly... very sad, and rather depressing to look at. Was that really why he was going through such a thing? "Why..? No - were you ordered by Galactic to kill all those people?" That was much more likely than killing whoever he wanted for no discernible reason.

"It's not that distressing. I mentioned that, didn't I? It's frequent enough that it's basically normal. As long as it stays normal, he never has to be any more than slightly confused." He took a moment to remove his glasses and work a smudge off the lens. "Unless, of course, someone comes along and throws a wrench into my carefully laid plans." His pale blue eyes returned to Claire's face suddenly, and he returned his glasses to the bridge of his nose.

"...Most of them, yes. I'm not sure if you were aware of it, but the espionage department had a subdivision. Assassination. That's where I worked." He wasn't normally so quick to give up such information, but it was rare that he had the opportunity to converse with others, let alone with a fellow former Galactic. "And between missions, I worked with the weapons department developing equipment to make my next mission easier." He narrowed his eyes slightly, tugging his sleeves to straighten them. "One... shouldn't have happened. It was an order, but I shouldn't have carried it out." He brought a hand to his forehead, as though suddenly afflicted with a headache. "He's got it in his head that it never happened, that the mark got away safely. If he ever finds out the truth... Arceus, I'll have ruined him..."
