Tamo's laugh was hardly louder than a breath, and about as long. He really did hope Cao could change his mind one day, but it wasn't any kind of hoped geared towards trying to change Cao; Cao was Cao, it would be wrong to change that.
"I'd love to meet the person who catches your eye one day and convinces you to settle down," Tamo said, chuckling louder now. "They'd have to have a direct blessing from the Modeity of Love!" He didn't say it in a mocking or teasing manner, just matter-of-fact. In Tamo's mind it would take someone very special to catch Cao's very stationary eye.

While Tamotsu may not have meant it as a joke, it made Caolan smile a little nonetheless. "I don't ever see myself having a mate."
But that was hardly a fact set in stone. He had never thought he'd want to so much a see, let alone speak to another fox, after he'd left his family, and now here he was, talking to Tamotsu, and actually enjoying it.
Maybe the right fox would come along. Maybe they wouldn't. Caolan was okay with it either way.

"Shame I don't have a sister," Tamo mused, half as a joke and half as one of those crazy little what-if scenarios everyone suffered from from time to time. "You seem to get along with me just fine, maybe it's in my genes or something. If I'd had sisters I could have hooked you up." That last sentence was a joke, and Tamo even snickered a little at the mental it presented.

"Or maybe a brother." Caolan shrugged lightly, not having given much thought to what gender he was attracted to. Mother had been with both a male and a female, and he had heard there were a large number of same-sex couples in his immediate family. Such as two of his older half brothers, who were both with male mates.
Really, he couldn't visualize himself with a vixen. He was having a slightly easier time picturing a male mate, but part of him secretly suspected that it might also be related to the fact that his one and only friend was also male.

Tamo laughed. "But you'd have me, so you wouldn't need my hypothetical brother," Tamo said, still tinged with amusement. He couldn't have said why he found it so amusing, because it wasn't that he was laughing to make fun of Cao or anything like that. It was more like he was enjoying some joke a higher being had set up at their expense.

Caolan gave Tamo a serious look, as he thought about what the other had said. Caolan had never given much thought to what he'd want in a mate--had never thought he would want a mate, period--but now that Tamo had brought it up, what if Caolan had a mate like Tamotsu? Or what if Tamotsu were his mate?
But they were just friends. He shouldn't be thinking such things.
But this was the final push he needed to finally ask: "You said you liked someone. Who is it?"

Tamo's energy had toned down now from jovial to his usual calm. "That's a very general question to ask," he said. He lightly dug his claws into the earth and other dead plant material on the ground, giving himself some time to organize his thoughts so he could answer in a serious fashion.
"I you mean romanace-wise, there's no one like that. I could list a pawful of names of those I consider my friends and whose company I enjoy, but right now they're only friends." A half-smile played on his lips as he looked at Cao. "Does that help answer your question?"

So he had just misunderstood what Tamo had said earlier. "It does."
He was somewhat relieved to hear that, too. It was selfish of him, but he hardly liked the thought of having to share Tamotsu with his other friends, let alone with a mate. Or even a potential mate.

Tamo smiled softly, bushy tail swishing behind him. "Well now that we've thoroughly established we're both single, would you like to do something? Maybe hunt, or just walk around and look for inhabitable spots. Doesn't have to be anything high energy."

(( "I'd like to take you to bed"
*brick'd still more* ))
Look for inhabitable spots? "Are you going to live here?"
Caolan wouldn't mind living in such a desolate place, but Tamotsu was far more social than him. Caolan couldn't see any reason for Tamotsu to want to stay here. Especially when Tamotsu had that friend, Airashi, in that tribe which sounded like it was far away from here.
But if Tamotsu was thinking about living in the area too, Caolan wasn't sure he'd mind it. Ordinarily, he would hate the thought of living with another fox. But if that fox were a friend instead? He wasn't sure in that case.

Tamo shrugged. "It could go either way at this point, really. I just wanna make sure the area is habitable. I don't mind a bit of seclusion, cause I can always venture out for a bit if I want company. I just want to make sure the weather in this place isn't too horrible, or that water or prey isn't too hard to obtain." A half-smile played on his face. "Of course I don't mind a challenge, it's part of the fun, but there's gotta be something I can challenge. As in I don't mind hunting hard for my food, there just has to be something to hunt."

Caolan nodded in understanding, and even smiled a little. He sort of liked the idea of Tamo living away from other people--that way, when Caolan wanted to visit, he wouldn't have to deal with anyone besides Tamo. It was selfish of him again, but he didn't care.
"Let's go see what there is," Caolan agreed. "Where have you explored so far?" He started to pick his way down the rock pile, and to the flat ground, before letting Tamotsu take the lead.

Tamo gestured behind him with a quick flick of his head. "Mostly from here all the way to the mountain range. I've been further, but that was hunting for prey more than a place to live and I wasn't paying all that much attention. It all looks the same sometimes, ya know," he said, chuckling.
He took the lead Cao had offered and set a light trotting pace. The land was a strange mixture of open rocky space and small clumps of trees. He was hoping the further they got from the mountain the more uniform the terrain would become.

"Do you mind it all looking the same?" It didn't bother Caolan yet, but he had just gotten there. Maybe it would start to get to him. Maybe not. Either way, it was too soon to say.
Caolan followed behind Tamotsu, easily keeping up with him, as he noted the shape of the terrain. It might all look the same to Tamotsu, but Caolan could see the subtle differences, well enough to navigate his way around. Another benefit of growing up in a clan of wanderers, he supposed. But not even those kinds of benefits outweighed how much he just couldn't stand it there, not Mother, and especially not with Arian.

"No, not really," came the response. "I guess it's pretty different. It's just odd to go from pure open space to clumps of trees and back into open space. Mostly I've been in pure forest terrain up 'til now." That was probably where the sameness feeling came from. To Tamo one open space felt like the next and one plot of trees was also the same as it's breathern. Maybe with some time he'd come to appreciate it more, but for now it all just felt so....bland.
"What about you? Could you see yourself living in a place like this," Tamo queried back. He knew vaguely that Cao had wandered around a lot in life, but that was really all he knew.
