Rae laughed as they ran to the water, splashing through the waves. She was almost surprised when she beat him, but changed her mind when she thought about what would have happened if he had honestly tried to win. Rae walked into the waves up to her waist, shivering in the cold water. She thought she felt something graze her ankle - then Alex came up from underneath her, completely soaking her and her friends.
They played around in the waves for a while, goofing off and splashing each other before there was a lull as the girls stopped to catch their breath. Alex floated on his back near by, and at his motion, Rae joined him. She smiled as she felt the familiar tingle of his magic as they floated together. Rae entwined his hands in hers, running her thumb over his knuckles. Rae's heart soared as she heard him say he didn't know what to do without her, and opened up the mental link between the two of them. "You're the biggest part of what made me who I am today. I wouldn't be the same person without you, Alex. I love you."
It was around then that Marissa called out, waving Rae's cell phone in the air. She sighed, and Alex set her down gently. Rae half ran to the beach, toweling off her hands and took the phone from Marissa. "Hello? Rae speaking." she listened for a minute and watched Alex. "Yeah, alright. Within the half hour." Rae waved Alex over, grabbing her change of clothes. "That was the boss, we gotta go." Rae waved to her friends, calling that they had to leave for work, and that she'd call them later. Rae opened the mind link again. "Looks like our day off's been cut short. New assignment. Meet me outside the bathroom in five." Rae sprinted to the bathroom and quickly changed into a pair of tight fitting jeans and a tank top.

Alex smiled when Rae opened the mental link to him. He stood back up in the water when Marissa called for Rae. He listened to the call through the mental link. When she told him to meet her outside the bathroom in five minutes he sigh Stretching his arms and looking back at the girls he smiled showing his fully grown fangs and deep ruby red eyes. The girl's eyes opened even wider in amazement before he disappeared right in front of their eyes. Reappearing in front of the bathroom holding his bottle of wine and the glass, clad in his normal attire, he now had his pistols in their holsters and his large hat on. He waited for Rae to finish changing and when she did, he smiled at her, put an arm around her and teleported them after kissing her on the cheek.
Reappearing just outside the head's office, he waited a few moments before entering. "Hello sir, what's the mission? Something urgent I'd guess." The head turned and looked at the two of them, a frown on his face. He began to explain the details of their next mission. Apparently one of their informants inside an illegal contraband trafficking ring had been found out, and now Rae and Alex were going to find him and pull him out safely, or, kill him if necessary. When the head finished explaining, he dismissed the two, but said, "Alex, can you hold back a bit. I need to talk to you." Alex waved Rae on and stayed behind, asking, "What's up Gramps? Something wrong?" Alex cocked his head in puzzlement, wondering what his grandfather could want.

"Alex..." Alaric began, steepling his hands in front of his wrinkled face, "Sit down."
Alaric looked across the table at his grandson, disappointment clear in his eyes. He sighed heavily, and pinched the bridge of his nose. "What are you doing with this human girl? She reeks of you, and I can smell her on your skin." His gaze leaving his grandson, he took his glasses off and wiped them with a cloth. "I sincerely hope that you have taken her as a human familiar, and nothing more. But, knowing you as I do..." Alaric replaced his glasses back on his nose and peirced Alex with a level stare.
"You are to stop your relations with this girl, Alex. She is beneath you, not worthy of your noble blood. She's little better than an orphan - her father was a drug dealer and her mother was a whore. She ranaway when she was twelve, we found her fighting for money on the streets when she was sixteen. The Organization brought her in, trained her, and made her what she is today. She would have nothing, if not for our generosity. Not even that hovel she calls home. "
Alaric took a sip from the bloodwine pourred in a glass at his elbow. Looking over the glass, he said "Unless, of course, you don't plan on keeping her human." Alaric arched an eyebrow and set his glass carefully on the table, watching for Alex's reaction.
"Tell me, grandson, how much more would you have poor Rae give up for you?" He looked up at his grandson again. "Surely you've noticed how last night and today was the first break you two have had from the job in three years. Doesn't that strike you as odd? Surely you know what the females go through one week out of every month as part of their mating cycle? I bet she didn't even make you wear a condom..." Alaric looked Alex over, disgusted, but his face softened at Alex's expression.
"Hasn't she given up enough for you Alex? Does she even want you, a vampire? How do you know she's even worth it?"
Alex had been in the room with Alaric a long time, the heavy door masking any noise from within. She figured the meeting must have been important, and, not wating to interrupt Alex with a mental thought, Rae left a folded note on the chair she had been sitting in.
I didn't want to interrupt, seems like it's a pretty important meeting. I'm going to the gym. Meet me there or back at my apartment.
I love you.

Rae left the building and made her way down the street, walking to the warehouse her friend had turned into a gym. Rae had complained to Rich long enough that there were no gyms open after hours that he gave her a key, and told her to use whatever she needed whenever she needed, as long as she didn't die. Rae had happily agreed, and often went there between jobs, or after hunting with Alex.
She opened the door, locking it behind her. Rae grabbed the duffel bag she kept there for nights like this, and chaged into a pair of spandex shorts and a sports bra. She trained for an hour, lifting weights and honing her fighting skills. When a light sheen of sweat covered her skin, she took a break for some water and plugged in her stereo. Rae danced around the gym, sometimes singing along, but mostly remaining quiet as she moved gracefull around the large room, lost in the music.

Alex sat down when Alaric told him to, wondering what it was all about. Alex saw the disappointment in his eyes and could tell something was bothering him. He listened to his grandfather, the expression on his face slowly changing to a frown. As his grandfather spoke he felt a rising sense of anger well up in him. Standing, he said, in a dead tone, his anger perfectly clear, "Grandfather, I respect you, but I will not stand for this sort of insulting nature. Rae is a decent, respectable woman... and I would expect you to see that. Just because she may not want to be a vampire, doesn't mean that we cannot be together. Despite the fact that she isn't nobility, I would expect you to be a bit more understanding." Alex glared at his grandfather, his ruby eyes seemingly on fire, growling slightly as he mentioned not keeping her human.
As his grandfather continued to speak, Alex's eyes opened wide in surprise. He hadn't thought about it, but now that he did, it made sense. Did she give that much up for him? He wondered how much she would be willing to give up for him. His eyes flared once again when he commented on her, but his expression softened very slightly when he asked if she had given up enough for him. Was it really all his fault? Alex pushed the thoughts from his mind and said, defiantly, "I would give up everything I have for her, if it were required. And I know she's worth it, even if you don't think so. I love her, and she loves me, that's all that matters." He glared at his grandfather once again before storming out of the office. Stopping, to pick up the note Rae had left him, he read it and smiled; she did love him, and he'd give up anything for her.
Smiling to himself, he opened a mental connection to her and said, "I'll be there momentarily... I need to talk to you about something." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. How was he going to ask her about this? Should he even ask her about this? Sighing, he decided he'd figure it out when he went there. Teleporting, he reappeared inside the gym, next to the stereo that was playing music. He reached over and changed the tune to a softer, more gentle song. Smiling lightly, with a hint of sadness in his eyes, he walked over to Rae and wrapped his arms around her. He whispered quietly, "I love you too." A small tear of blood ran down his face and dripped onto her shoulder. He knew that he loved her, but how far would she go for him? He didn't want to see her hurt, and he didn't think he could go on without her. Would she accept his offer? It was still too early to ask her, he thought. He'd have to wait before asking her this, right now he just wanted to hold her close.

Rae stilled as she felt the familiar mental tug, and closed her eyes, breathing deeply as she waited for him to appear. She felt it - the moment he appeared in the room with her - the sudden shift in the air, his unmistakable scent causing her heart to flutter in her chest.
She opened her eyes and turned, looking partway over her shoulder as Alex changed the song. A slow smile spread across her face as she listened to the music, the lyrics. Rae sighed contentedly as he wrapped his arms around her, her heart stopping briefly as he whispered in her ear. Rae had been about to turn and tell him how happy her made her, when she felt something wet land on her shoulder. She looked down and then looked quickly up at Alex, concern lighting her face. "Has he been hurt?" Rae's emerald green eyes softened into a different kind of concern as she saw the line of blood a tear had left on his face.
She carefully raised her hand to his cheek, brushing the tear away with her thumb. "Alex...?" she breathed, his name a question on her lips as she searched his eyes. "What's the matter, love?" Unsure of how to help him, Rae let him hold her close until he was ready to tell her what was wrong.

Alex smiled sadly when she asked him what was wrong. He turned her around and hugged her to his chest. Sighing with a bit of nervousness and a bit of sadness, he said, "Rae... While I was meeting with Alaric... He told me quite a few things... Many I disagreed on... but one is something that I cannot answer. He told me... he told me that you had to give up your right to have children... in order to work with me... Is that true?" He released his grip on her and looked into her eyes, waiting for an answer. He wanted the truth, no matter what it was. He wanted to know if she really did give so much up for him, and whether or not he could make it up to her.

Rae held onto him as he hugged her, tilting her head back so she'd be able to see his face as he spoke.
She blinked confused at first. "I...yes. They told me that you would be distracted, by...by my scent, and that it would be dangerous...for you. They told me every female had the procedure when partnered with a vampire male. Even some vampire females...I thought...you knew...I wanted to keep you safe." She explained, wanting desperately to remove the sad look from his face. Rae kissed him gently.

Alex frowned even while she kissed him. Tears escaped his eyes and ran down his cheeks. Pulling away from the kiss, he stared at her and asked, "Those bastards... they told you those lies? Why? Why would you feel you had to give up that much for me? Why would you do that? You hardly even knew me at the time... And besides... I would never have hurt you or been hurt... you're too important to me... you always have been, ever since I met you." Alex smiled sadly at her, his cheeks had streams of red running down them now, not too rapidly, but enough to look worrying. He sighed and looked down at the ground, blood dripping to the floor, silently, music still playing in the background. Looking back up at her, he looked worried, with red streaks running down his cheeks and a sad frown on his face. Hugging her close, he said, "Rae... I can't bear to think of what I would do without you... I can't imagine what would happen if I lost you. I don't want to take that chance either... I want you to consider this, and consider it seriously... Will you... join me in the darkness? Be... Become one of us... and become mine... for all eternity?" He held her close, looking down at her face, waiting silently for a response.

"Oh Alex..." Tears of her own welled up in Rae's eyes as she attempted to wipe some of the blood away. "Don't you see? That's exactly why I couldn't take the chance. The thought of you being hurt because of me..." Rae shuddered, a tear sliding down her cheek. "And here I've gone and managed to hurt you anyway...I love you, Alex."
He held her close, and she tilted her head back so that she was looking into his eyes as he asked the question that would change her life forever. "Will you... join me in the darkness? Be... Become one of us... and become mine... for all eternity?"
Rae felt her insides turn to liquid. She opened up her mind to him, afraid that she wouldn't be able to explain properly, all of her thoughts laid out before him in the ultimate showing of trust. "There is so much to lose, so many things I'll never do again," She thought longingly of days spent in the sun, picnicking and boating...of waking up to the warm sun on her face...of the changes in her breathing when something exciting happened. And then she imagined everything she stood to gain, an entire eternity stretched before her, full of endless possibilites, with the man who owned her heart by her side, the love of her long, long life. Rae looked into the eyes of the man she loved and said "I will be yours for eternity. I love you, Alex, with everything I have."

Alex watched for her reaction, letting her think it over. He prepared for her to say no, and his face even fell slightly when she opened her mind and thought about what she would be losing. His face lifted a little when she thought about what she would gain. When she finally gave him her answer, he lifted her up and kissed her deeper than ever before. Hugging her close while still kissing her transmitted a thought to Rae, saying, "I think my heart just started beating for the first time in 400 years." Smiling he let go of the kiss, and set Rae down, saying, "Go get your clothes and such and I'll take us back to your apartment, okay?" Smiling a real smile of happiness, Alex watched as Rae walked away to go get her things. Turning, he shut off the stereo, and heard a scream. Turning back, he saw Rae in the arms of a vampire, surrounded by a few more low level vampires.
Alex growled and shouted, "RAE! Give her back! What the hell do you want with her!?" He saw the head vampire smile evilly and say, "The boss just sent us here to kidnap this human... He said we could do whatever we wanted with her. Once we got her away from you that is." The vampire's tongue rolled out of his mouth and he licked up Rae's neck to her cheek. Alex started to step forward but the vampire raised Rae up threatening to kill her. Alex stopped and could only watch as the vampires took Rae away, while 4 of them stayed behind to make sure he didn't try anything.

Rae marvelled in the kiss as Alex swung her off her feet. She was feeling like she had the night before in her apartment, but this time Alex hadn't used a spell. When he set her down, she smiled with him, happiness radiating from every pore in her body.
She hurried to the changeroom to grab her clothes and was looking for her hairbrush when she was grabbed from behind. For the first half second she didn't fight, thinking that Alex just couldn't let go of her long enough for her to get her things, but within the next half second, she realized it wasn't Alex at all. The vamp who grabbed her held her hands behind her back and handcuffed them, before quickly joined by nine other vamps as they made a circle around her. She kicked the vamp directly infront of her in the face before the vamp holding her pressed his mouth to her neck. "Ah ah ah...one wrong move, girly, and it'll be me turnin' ya into a vamp. And I won't be near as gentle as the bloke in there." he whispered.
The vampire pressed up against her back, pushing her out into the room where Alex was waiting. Rae grimaced as the vampire licked her, his saliva reeking of blood. When the vampires finished tauting Alex, they dragged Rae away, into the snowy night, and threw her in the back of a waiting van - none to gently. As Rae fell, she smashed her chin off the floor of the van and bit her lip, causing it to crack and bleed. Dazed, Rae rolled over and attempted to sit up before falling back down, but not before noticing the hungry glint in the eyes of the vampire sitting next to her.
"C'mon Lyle, can't we just have a little bite? She smells so good, and look, she's bleeding..." The vampire leaned closer to her and Rae scooted away as best she could, putting her back to the van wall. "That's not going to help you." a big vampire to her right grunted as he stuck a needle in Rae's arm. The last thing Rae saw before giving into the blackness was a mental picture of Alex's worried face, the van floor rising up to meet her.

Alex growled at the four vampires who stayed behind. Staring at them with murderous rage, his ruby eyes were nearly on fire. Turning to the one closest to him, Alex said, "You guys don't know who you're up against, do you?" The vampire made a noise like he didn't care, turned to one of his fellow vamps and that's when Alex struck. Waving his hand at the vampire with his back turned, he was engulfed in shadows and sank into the floor. The vampire turned back and was surprised to see Alex gone, Looking around, he didn't notice the fact that Alex was now mirroring his shadow, waiting for the opportune time to strike. When the four vampires grouped together, Alex struck. Rising from the shadows, Alex was just a looming black figure with a twisted smile on his face and glowing red eyes. Attacking, he ripped three of the four vampires to shreds before they could even react, letting the fourth cower in fear. Approaching slowly, he cocked his head to the side and asked, "What's the matter? Scared? Good! You never should've messed with me. Just so you know, this is going to be the most painful experience you've ever felt." Approaching him slowly, he stuck one of his hands out at the vampire and snapped his fingers. The shadows faded from Alex's body, skittered across the floor and covered the vampire, who began to scream, but no noise escaped the cover of darkness. Alex smiled brightly and walked out the way the vampires had gone, trying to establish a mental link with her, but was unable to connect. Frowning, he decided to rely on his own instincts, he could follow Rae's scent anywhere once he caught a whiff of it. Smelling the air, Alex caught her scent almost immediately, it was a mixture of her blood, sweat, happiness and overwhelming fear; the vampires would pay for this.
Quickly running after her scent, Alex didn't care who saw him running down the street, combat pistols in hand and passing the people in the fast lane on the highway; nothing was going to stop him from saving Rae. As he ran, he noticed that the sun was beginning to come out, the spell he had worked on the weather was wearing off and it would be dangerous to use it a second time. He pushed himself even faster, so he could hopefully save Rae before the sun turned him to dust. Nothing could stop him, nothing would prevent him from saving his love; not other vampires, not the sun, not even the devil himself could stop Alex now.

Rae kicked and fought her way through the blackness of her drug induced sleep, workings desperately to break through. She was groggy, her limbs heavy from the sedative, but after long struggle, she was able to force her eyes open. The van had stopped, and the vamps had left her face down on the floor. Rae quickly did a mental body scan and was relieved to find she hadn't been bitten - yet.
Just then the back doors to the van opened, and Rae was dragged unceremoniously to the doors on her stomach, splitting her lip again, a fresh trickle of blood running down her chin. She was yanked onto her feet, stumbling slightly as they pushed her along into the building. Rae had no time to get a good look at where she was before she was pushed inside. It took her eyes a minute to adjust to the dark, large shapes looming in the corners. The building looked like it could have once been an office space, and as they rounded a corner, Rae's eyes were forced to adjust again.
They were on the edge of a large room - the office cafeteria. The cafe tables and chairs had been pushed against the wall haphazardly, the middle of the room empty except for a large circular patch of sunlight streaming through the windows above. "If I can just get them into the sunlight... Rae thought, stopping momentarily to get a better look at her surroundings. As if on cue, the large vampire behind Rae gave her a shove to get her moving again. Rae anticipated the shoved and moved slightly to the right, using the vampires momentum against him to send him stumbling into the sunlight. The vampire screamed as he caught fire, and attempted to run out of the light. He didn't make it in time, his charred remains falling into a heap of dust. But Rae was only vaguely aware of what had happened to him. She had taken off, running as fast as she could with her hands behind her back and no idea of where she was going.
Rae ran through the sunlight, the vampires hissing and cursing as they were forced to go around. "I'm going to make it." she thought desperately, praying that the door on the other side of the room led outside. Then, suddenly, the vamp who had licked her was standing in her path. Rae swerved, but he caught her arm and spun her against him, the sharp points of his teeth digging into her neck - putting pressure, but not quite breaking her skin. She gasped and went still, not wanting to encourage him or make any sudden movements.
”You're crafty, girl. I'll give ya that. But I don't want to have to bind your pretty little feet too.” The vamp reached around from behind her and turned her chin towards the group of angry vampires. ”See, they don't need much of a reason to suck you dry, and leave you dead for your little boyfriend to find...and what with you already bleeding and all...” He inhaled her scent and licked her neck, before turning her quickly to face him, red eyes glittering, his hunger apparent. Rae tried hard to keep breathing evenly. He snarled, nostrils flaring, and turned her back around before tying a short piece of rope around her wrists and jabbing the point of a long sword into her back. ”Move.” he growled. The vamp positioned Rae in the sunlight while he stood on the edge of the shadows, holding tight to the rope he bound her with so she couldn't run, the sword point in her back so she couldn't retreat. Everything fell silent as they waited for Alex to enter the building, the vampires in anticipation, Rae in horror.

Alex ran as fast as he could, following the scent closely, getting stronger as he ran, he could tell he was getting closer. He wasn't going to be stopped now. The sun was coming up, and he had to hurry if he wanted to save Rae. He managed to track Rae and her captors down to an old abandoned office building. He approached the van and saw one of the vampires get out of the driver's seat. Moving up behind him, Alex clasped two hands around his head and used a bit of magic, the vampire twitched slightly, then fell over, dead. Reaching into his pocket, Alex found the keys to the van; the vampires would need it to escape. Smelling the air, trying to catch Rae's scent, he caught it; with blood in the air, she was bleeding. Quietly following the scent to its source, Alex hid behind the wall as he watched Rae push a vampire into the sunlight and kill him. Chuckling he thought, "That's Rae... never gives up." When he saw the other vampire intercept her, he growled very slightly, so as to not give away his presence.
Alex watched as they set up, waiting for him, it wasn't going to do them any good when he struck however. Noticing the periodic bits of sunlight in the room, Alex decided he'd have to be extra careful if he wanted to save Rae and survive this. Using magic, Alex melted into shadows once again, and moved across the floor in darkness. Deciding to eliminate the one furthest away first, he silently floated up out of the darkness behind him, the other vampires not seeing him, he wrapped his hands around the vampire's head and sank back into the darkness silently, bringing the vampire with him. With only two vampires left, Alex decided it was safe enough to go on the offense. Pulling out his pistols he shot at the one not holding Rae, and by the time he had his guns pointed at the other one, he was already poised to kill her.
With his comrades smoking on the floor nearby, the head vampire held Rae in the darkness, waiting to see what Alex would do. Alex stood on the other side of the light from the two of them, and growled, "It's over... give her back." The vampire laughed and smiled, showing his fangs and licking Rae's neck again. Alex stepped forward, not an inch from the sunlight, and the vampire said. "Well, if you want her, go get her." With that, the vampire stabbed the sword through Rae's back and shoved her into the light, bleeding profusely from her chest and mouth. Alex screamed, "NO!" The head vampire laughed and disappeared, teleporting away. Alex looked down at Rae, pausing for only a second before moving into action. He sprinted into the light, scooping up Rae, and passing out the other side, his skin burnt and still sizzling.
He looked Rae over, a worried expression on his face, and tears forming in his eyes. He didn't want it to be like this, he wanted it to be a happy moment, not a terrible one. Tears now running down his face, he pulled the sword quickly from Rae's body and tossed it to the ground. Holding Rae in his arms, he leaned in on her neck, tears still streaming down his face and bit her.

Rae felt the blade enter her body and gasped, stumbling as she was pushed forward into the sunlight before falling to the ground. She couldn't breathe, her vision going black at the edges. Rae was finally able to open the link between the two of them. "Alex...don't hurt yourself. I'll be fine...just, stay...I love you..." The last image Rae had was of Alex's face as he ran towards her before her vision went black.
She was floating...floating in nothing. Rae was unaware of anything going on around her, just content to float in the abyss. Then, suddenly, she was in agony. It felt as though her body was being ripped to shreds, the very essence of her being was being torn from her, trying to free itself from her physical shell. Rae screamed, one note, full of every feeling she'd ever expirienced. Tears of blood streamed down her face, and she fell limp.
Rae's eyes opened, her senses magnified a hundred fold. The first experience she had was the thirst. It slammed into her with a force she could never have imagined. On the heels of her thirst was the smell. Blood. Rae was jerked up into a sitting position, her instincts propelling her forward towards the smell, grabbing for it as her fangs descended, her pupils dilating into slits, her fangs piercing flesh as she drank greedily.
