99% of the arguments from creationists are proof that they do not know a thing about evolution. Others who do know, will blow off points such as "Why don't we see humans evolving?" or "Why are the people with good genes unable to get any action?" Maybe because IT TAKES time and huge differences are unattractive to the opposite sex

No, you can't understand evolution and deny it. If a creationist understands the theory of evolution, then they probably can't really call themself a creationist.

Ok, I have a question, and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but aren't the actual theories of evolution and creation explaining two separate actions? Creation, I thought was an attempt to explain how the earth came to be, whereas evolution talks more about how animals change through time, via natural selection, mutation, genetic drift, etc.

Correct! The theory of evolution merely describes the proliferation of genes and memes, and it would be true even if the Earth were 6,000 years old. Creationists insist that there is no such thing as evolution. That's one reason why we don't like creationism. It's really dumb.

I think problem with this whole guild is that evolution and creationism are not intrinsically antagonistic. Rather, the impetus for this guild comes more directly from religious tension. A clash between two factions, those who believe evolution excludes religion and those who believe creationism requires religion.
Perhaps if we resolve the most basic questions some of the others will fall neatly into place.

If you're referring to the vague idea that god, or some deity, influenced life to form... then no, there is no conflict. That's not what this guild was set up to combat, many of our members are religious, this guild was set yup to combat the spread of Young Earth Creationism. They type of dishonest crap that is thrown about by people like "DrDino", AKA Kent Hovind. Check the sticky titled "The Enemy", you'll see the sort of thing I mean. Those sort of lies are an affront to human will, intelligence, and dignity. Whether you view those as our own creations, or God's.

as an anti-creationist, i am not trying to change anyone, i am merly trying to educate people in science and help them make the right descision, which is, of course, a knowledgeable one.

as a creationist myself, i want to get a lot of things cleared up here. not all of us are bible toting idiots... granted unfortunatly there are quite a few out there... what i want is to get my two cents worth out there. first of all, you cant say that species cant change. we see it through natural selection. i believe evolution happens. however, i do not believe it is the way life started out. why? because of one little scientific theory. the cell theory. as you all know (or at least should) the cell is the basic unit of life. if it isnt a cell, it isnt living. period. the thing about the cell is, according to the cell theory, all cells must come from pre exhisting cells. so where did that first cell come from? if you can explain this, your doing much better than the rest of the scientific community

But that is irrelevant to the theory of evolution. However, viruses are not cells. And they are alive by some definitions of life. Virus's are replicating machines. As are cells. It is not inconceivable for self replicating protien machines to turn into more complex machines over time, and eventually into cells. At least, no known mechanism exists to prevent this. After all, cells are built from these exact same protiens.

One thing that has been overlooked in this discussion is the goal of debating with creationists. Is our goal to convince them?
Probably not. Although some of them are merely ignorant and mistaken, a disproportionate number of the vocally passionate creationists are so dedicated to their beliefs.
However, our goal shoudl not be to convince the zealots. Rather, when we debate these irrational people, our goal is to convince the dozens of lurkers and casual readers of the rightness of our side. Let your counterpart rant, present lies, and use distortions of logic. Calmly and succinctly point out his factual and logical errors. And when he refuses to acknowledge obvious errors, you've won the debate even if he hasn't budged an inch.

This is a guild formed to oppose creationism, to be sure.
However, the reality is that we can only ever hope to dent the surface of the problem, and the formation of a guild doesn't help much. (It helps a little).
In message boards all over the internet, there are creationists, and there are anti-creationists, and we can only hope that rationality triumphs in the end. We've got to maintain a presence on the internet, and do the best we can.
The truth is that creationism is but one aspect of a greater problem in society that does not recognise objective truth or the value of argument. The majority of people, for example, recognise either all religions as being equally valid, or only one. There is no common understanding of the worth of discriminating against innaccuracy and unverified claims. This isn't a problem we can solve on messageboards alone.

I'd have to say it's too hard to disprove either side really. Person-to-person Person 1: Hey, Abraham Lincoln didn't exist Person 2: Yeah he did! Person 1: Prove it. Person 2: They've got tons of his writings and-- Person 1: Have you seen him? Person 2: Well, no. . . Person 1: Then how do you know? The easier side does seem to be religion, but faking the devotion stuff has always been hard. I tend to stay out of the conversations for just that reason. Call me existential but I think I'd rather save my gray hairs for later on in life. Darn, I'm getting soft. *prods at my skin* Yep, still made of the aesthetic skin the aliens left on me. *is a bit cheerful for hungry*

Of course science doesn't deal with absolutely proving things, but science does have such a thing as 'scientific proof'. If you amass a sufficent body of evidence explained with theory, then it counts as scientific proof if nobody can disprove it.

I never doubted evolution, but I used to wonder why there were still monkeys. Then I read a book on evolution, and realized that that was just a lie made up by anti-truth people.
It's really frustrating, though. Once someone posts, they are likely to respond ONLY to people who quote them. I guess because they think other posts won't be relevant to theirs. I dunno, I guess putting their name at the top of the post could help, but still some people will skip over the post because they think it's not addressed to them.
But I have been in this very kind of situation, surrounded by people who don't know the facts and they all ignore me, no matter how many times I post the answers. Posting in big, red text might catch some eyes, but it makes you look obnoxious.
I guess when people are determined to be ignorant, you can't help much, but maybe you can help a little bit.
