I think I deserve the sappy award for buying on import:

The Fox and the Hound (After finally watching it on youtube (and almost crying))

and then on my way back from Further Confusion 2007 - I picked up Fox and the Hound 2 at San Jose International Airport.

It was on sale. I do give Disney some credit for remaining somewhat faithful to the original movie...somewhat.

Given Disney's knack for butchering adaptations, I still want to get hold of the original book.

I am reminded of my need to read Bambi one of these days.

I have read one of the Mary Poppins books, but not the first, and t'was many years ago.

I want to read the original book as well in all truth. I know there is a copy floating around the South of Englands librarys.

From what I hear, the end is monumentally sad, which makes me wonder - who dies?

Salten's original Bambi is lovely, philosophical stuff. I need to get hold of the sequels sometime.

To be fair, Chris, the endingof the movie isn't exactly happy, either - but we both know Disney'strack record for airbrushing out deaths.

Though I've yet to run across a more gratuitous case than The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
(Still need to see most of the film, come to think of it, Though Atlantis ranks higher on my list of Disney-I-probably ought-to-watch, given that Mike Mignola had a hand in the animation)

(Is reminded that Fox and the Hound was actually animated by Burton)

*Just re-wiki'd the book the Disney film was based on*

Well, I can see why Disney DID change the ending there.

Yow x.x; I won't be reading that book anytime...ever...

Xag, remind us in May and you may be able to watch Atlantis. I've got it on DVD, we may have time to fit it in. It gets my vote for Disney movie with the highest death toll.

The voice cast rock too - Michael J. "Marty" Fox, James "Rockford" & "God" Coburn (or is Garner, I can never remember which) and Claudia
"Ivanova" Christiansen...

Wow, didn't even know that about Atlantis...I guess it would explain the angular, Hellboy-ish style, though.

It really is a good movie, though. I always liked Disney's more action-adventure-ish movies over the "Princess"-themed ones (but hey, I'm a guy : P). I'll never understand why that and Treasure Planet were so underrated; not to mention Brother Bear, which I think has the biggest plot twist ever in a Disney flick.

And yet, the animated era ended with garbage like Home on the Range...(well, the current era; won't know how the next one goes).

Hunchback is actually one of my favourite recent Disney films, and very, VERY dark if it wasn't for the last ninety seconds of back-pedalling over the first ninety minutes.

Murder in the first scene, genocide, lust, greed, religious references and the best darned villain's solo number Disney's ever come up with (R.I.P. Tony Jay sad ).

But the moppet at the end just annoys me.

And since I overlooked it the last time - it was James "God" Garner, not Coburn. smile

Thanks for the correction, Nuala smile For some reason, I keep getting them mixed up. Maybe because they were *both* in Maverick? And they both have great voices...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has been less than impressed with Disney's animated movie output recently. I think Atlantis & Lilo & Stitch were the last ones I liked the look of enough to go see. Home on the Range looked rubbish and I can't even remember what other ones have been released. Chicken Little? This Meet the Robinsons thing that's coming? Other than that, no idea.

I'm trying to remember when exactly we found out about the Darkwing & TaleSpin DVD releases last year. I'm hoping for more news, but I think I may be a little ahead of myself.

EDIT: I just checked tvshowsondvd.com. They first had rumours in January, but they weren't confirmed until April 17th. So there's time. The news on Chip 'n' Dale's second release wasn't until April 24th, but that was for a November release. Come on Disney, I beg of you! There are like another 60-odd episodes for me to savour...

Well, thanks to a very kind guy on Outpost Gallifrey, I now know (and before TV Shows on DVD announced it) that Darkwing volume 2 is out in August. It has a cracking episode list, including the introduction of the Liquidator, the introduction of the yellow & red NegaDuck.

In fact, some of my faves are below, in white to avoid spoilers - you know the score by now smile

Whiffle While You Work - Quackerjack Toys v video games (and possibly the proper introduction to the quacky one)!
Ghoul of My Dreams - ah, the trials and tribulations of falling for a career criminal...
Life, the Negaverse, and Everything - the proper introduction to NegaDuck (version 2, as opposed to the opposite of Posiduck)
Dry Hard - the proper introduction to the Liquidator
Darkwing Doubloon - random "historical" tall tale featuring the Fearsome Five and the Justice Ducks (don't ask me why)
It's a Wonderful Leaf - aka It's a Darkwing Christmas
Twitching Channels - a world of hideous, beakless mutants; need I say more?
My Valentine Ghoul - ah, the trials and tribulations of dating a hot-tempered witch, when you also have a rival...
Dead Duck - a word to the wise: avoid Andy's Anvil Factory
In Like Blunt - this may be the one with the Disney cameos...
Quack of Ages - the torture, the torture!
Time and Punishment - our introduction to Darkwarrior Duck and the importance of Gosalyn

Me of little faith, Disney hasn't let me down yet. Now to hope for further news on TaleSpin, CNDRR & DuckTales. Judging by how well the DuckTales pilot went down a week or go, I imagine the demand should be quite good...

It's update time!

I've dragged myself away from Darkwing Duck volume 2 long enough to post this. You should be proud of me, I dragged myself away from the episode which gives us Negaduck's backstory smile

As you'll have guessed, volume 2 has been released and it rocks. I don't think the eps have been cleaned up in any way, so "Whiffle While You Work" in particular has some very strong colours that made me wonder if my TV were properly adjusted. That ep has a great plot, great dialogue, but the animation's pretty shoddy. I didn't look to see which animation company did it, but I ought to sometime.

Anyhow, wrenching myself back from St Canard (and indeed an episode where Gizmoduck shows up), on to Duckberg. Yes indeed, DuckTales volume 3 is slated for a November release.

So too is TaleSpin volume 2 - Disney haven't entirely forgotten the air pirates after all smile This actually ties in quite nicely with the "40th anniversary platinum edition" of Jungle Book, which comes out in the States in October. I'll have to find out if my folks have a multi-region player or not - they love that movie and birthdays are coming up...

No news yet on Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers. There's only 14 eps left, it can't be that hard! I'm hoping against hope that someone in marketing was reading ultimatedisney.com and decided to give us a bunch of extras for this final volume - you know, chat tracks with the voice artists, trailers, even a couple of Disney Afternoon intros? Please? Pretty please with sugar on top?

Yeah, I know, in my dreams. Still, I can but hope.

DW

(back to channelling the Terror that Flaps!)

EDIT: I just had an enraged 10 minutes thinking they'd cut "My Valentine Ghoul". There was a line uttered by NegaDuck that appeared to be missing:

"I feel terrible, stooping to such petty crime. But you just can't imagine how expensive a thermonuclear warhead *is* these days!"

Turns out I don't know the episode quite as well as I thought, and it occurs later on. Phew! *mops brow*
