Ⅱ. MISSION: ONLY I KNOW |
Darkstar - Dear Heartbeat
Faction Prompt - Council
We are enthralled to hear of your interest in the Council, Ms. Rogers, but the Council does not admit its students without evidence first of their skills and interests. Your location in Imisus serves you well, as many Council hubs around the province provide a means to providing for many fields available to us in the sciences, from the study of flora to the illustrious study of the cosmos. But, tell us, what do you have to provide for the Council, and what it is it that you wish to study?
This mission must be done within two solos-- one of conducting the experiment and discovering your field of interest, and one of meeting a doctor who is an expert in that field. The letter of recommendation is confidential and the Dean is not expected to meet you personally at this time, so no RP is required.

"Do you not intend to go back to Gadu, Doctor?" Lulu Rogers asked as she sat there, waiting for von Hohenheim to finish up whatever he was doing. It had been a long and difficult journey for Lulu Rogers to appear where she was now. If you asked her just two months ago, she wouldn't have dared to imagine that she'd be here of all places. In a doctor's residence--where he was looking at rats and sorts and mixing some liquids.

She was here to get more knowledge in toxicology and after her brief discussion with Doctor von Hohenheim via letters. The only reason she knew of him was because of the book that now became her bible. von Hohenheim's discoveries had been documented and sold in Mr. Darling's bookstore, back in Gadu. After a few exchanges of words, von Hohenheim agreed to see her to help her with her experiment. von Hohenheim officially resided in Rosstead, but was in Thorn, Auvinus for some other business that didn't really matter to Lulu. She brought herbal medicines that were bought through some local shops and carried with her her cloak as well as a spare change of clothing. The trip to the doctor's residence would take about a couple days--with stops that delayed the trip--but Lulu finally made it. Ellison spent his time elsewhere, wandering about. He, unfortunately, didn't have the key to the bookstore, and therefore, she, Miss Potts and Mr. West made their way towards Foxbrook and stopped by Thorn.

"Well, I have business to finish up here first, as you do as well." The doctor replied. She nodded. After wandering around Gadu for the past few months since Alfred's death, she never felt such...determination to actually be of affiliation with such an organization. However, with the recent outcries and riots--despite all rumors--Lulu still felt that the Council of Sciences was her place to be. She had a taste of religious groups before--and the crow that appeared to have died still haunted her in her dreams. She still felt that it was Alfred that was haunting her, and she hated that even though he was dead, he still popped up in her mind. She wondered what it would take to forget about him.

But her mind was here now, in von Hohenheim's lab of sorts. "Now you said you were interested in studying toxicology? Please, may you refresh my memory? I'm afraid I don't want to reread the letters you've sent." He inquired without looking up. "Yes. Back at home, I dealt with a lot of tea, you see, as my family owned a nice small shop in a port city. I also knew of an herbalist who taught me about various types of plants and herbs that would be beneficial towards a person's health. To learn about the danger of poisons and whatnot would be of great use for me, I believe, since then I could perhaps be of assistance to help find cures or at least attempt to create antidotes. I've read your book on toxicology, you see, Doctor von Hohenheim, but I believe I need to know more. After all, it is said you wrote this a few years ago?"

To be honest, while Lulu spoke of cures and good things, Lulu couldn't help but think about what it must have felt like to feed such toxicity towards humans. Luckily for the labs--and potential victims, Lulu would be testing animals. Who knows, though, if in the future--when testing on humans would potentially be necessary, how the results will go?

"Why, how did you ever discover your interest in such a field anyhow? If you have such a rich background in herbal medicines, surely it would be more plausible to research more into that?"

Lulu almost wanted to glare at him. She wasn't sure if he was trying to make some sort of implication that Lulu shouldn't study toxicology or not, but she had to respond cautiously--and calmly. "Sire, while I appreciate your honest suggestion, I must say that if I was to continue studying simply herbal medicines, I wouldn't know exactly what I was making medicine for, you see. It's essential for me to learn more about toxicology for such. I know that there was a book that came out that dealt with poisons--and it described...the perfect murder. I simply want to prevent that." She blabbered on, hoping that he'd be approving of her reasoning.

Lulu wasn't lying when she said she wanted to prevent murder. She simply wanted to protect herself--and the cure/antidote/whatever she could get from her findings would put her one step ahead of the game. Especially nowadays, poisoning was such a popular method to kill, and Lulu was wary of her enemies. She didn't know who she could trust--and she needed a plan b.

And thus, Doctor von Hohenheim gave her some mixes of his poison--as well as recipes and ingredients--and two live rats. She was to test out his current experiment on creating an antidote for the poisons that she said was used as the perfect murder, and his very own poisons. He also gave her some notes of observation as to what some of the symptoms of the rat were once given a specific recipe of poison--ranging from immediately dying to various types of delayed deaths.

"I'm pleased to see your interest, Mrs. Rogers. Especially after all the bad news we've been receiving." Lulu smiled. Indeed, there were bad news--but it didn't stop her. "Only I know what to think of it, Doctor von Hohenheim. At least, I can only think for myself. Even if it were true or not, I wouldn't be bothered. Science is...important, is it not?" She smiled a bit. The doctor nodded profusely. "Yes, yes! Now please, be on your way. I'm very much busy, you see, and I can't have you work here."

That meant two more days traveling back to Oakburough, unless she spent some time living in Rosstead--but she didn't know any taverns. The doctor suggested a place for her to go, and then she went on her merry way--to be stopped by a few men who decided to toy with her.

"Why little missy, what's all this you're carrying?" In her hands, she held recipes and ingredients and a cage of rats. "It's none of your concern, gentlemen." She walked past them and continued. They followed, however, and made attempts to bother her--but she simply kept walking. "Look, just take this pamphlet, okay! The sciences are bad news! They're opening humans and doing tests and--" She simply snatched the piece of parchment out of his hands and walked away briskly, glad that they stopped following her now. People died everyday--opening dead bodies, whether they be human or animal, didn't bother Lulu Rogers. So why would she have to listen to some jargon about it?

Finally, she reached to the tavern that von Hohenheim mentioned, and got a room for herself. She laid out her belongings and the items received from the doctor.

She smirked at the rats as they squeaked a little. Did they know what was to become of them? To delay their inevitable fates just a bit longer, she pulled out the notes that she received and read of the dilating pupils and the squeaks and the shriveling and the increased heart rate and the bleeding. Lulu had no intention of opening up the rat for this experiment.

Following von Hohenheim's instructions, Lulu mixed the poisons with various ingredients, and brought out her own herbal medicines and ingredients. She referenced her Yiruian medicine book, and based off knowledge that was already known at home, she attempted to make an antidote that would counteract--or at least subdue the poisons. She gave a dose to the first rat--who would escape death for a measly ten longer seconds than expected before it squealed in agony.

Lulu's mind flashed to Alfred's scream. Strange. This was the first time she ever thought about it. Lulu didn't let it bother her, however, as she continued to play with the liquids and ingredients. Only one rat left now.

She hoped for the best.

Whatever the Panymium Press said about the Council, she would refuse to really care about it. A simple overreaction. After all, like she said earlier, people died all the time--at the hands of others, might she add. It wasn't abnormal.

She waited, watching as the rat squirm and squeak in its cage. She watched closely, wondering if her antidote would work.

After about two minutes of squirming, the rat, fell to its demise. She frowned a bit before looking through her ingredients again.

Well. That didn't work out. She sighed a bit, wondering how she would be able to report to Doctor von Hohenheim that it wasn't a success. While she didn't know what ingredients were required or not required--at least she knew that one of them caused for a different symptom--and allowed for the subduing of the rat's death. Lulu would have to talk to von Hohenheim tomorrow morning.

Another rat scattered back to its home in a hole of the wall. Perhaps it heard the death cries of thee two previous rats that died at the hands of Lulu Rogers.

Ⅲ. MISSION

The Council requests that you visit one of the many esteemed doctors around the area, specifically a doctor who is an expert in your field of interest, and enlighten him about at least one experiment relating to the subject matter and your discoveries thereof. We expect a letter of recommendation written by the doctor, which the Dean will read himself to verify your skill and intrigue in the sciences.

"You've made it back, I see." One Mr. de Liuzzi noted to a Doctor von Hohenheim. "Yes, indeed. The travel to Gadu is a rather difficult one, coming from Rosstead." de Liuzzi nodded in agreement. "Yes. Luckily I was only at Waterbury when the notice came in for a call of arms. So, Paracelsus, how are things on your end?" Paracelsus was incredibly easier to say compared to von Hohenheim. If Lulu Rogers was to hear that this was his name, she probably would have strangled him or gave him a chiding for making life difficult with the name von Hohenheim. He chuckled at the thought. "I've brought a letter, you see. A young woman by the name of Lulu Rogers visited me last week--insisting on studying toxicology. A Yiruian woman, you see." de Liuzzi was slightly impressed. "Now what's a foreign woman doing here?" Paracelsus shook his head. "I haven't the slightest--but she's intriguing."

Paracelsus

Doctor Sedgwyck Kirkaldy,

A young Yiruian woman approached me, Paracelsus of Thorn, last week in regards to beginning her studies in a rather new field entitled toxicology. A Mrs. Lulu Rogers, sire, has requested to join our movement. She has background knowledge in herbal medicines as a result to being a part of a tea shop--and I'm assuming an apprentice of sorts under some herbalist back at home as well. The lady didn't delve into the specifics about her knowledge, but she was well-prepared with a few books to use as her arsenal, including but not limited to a toxicology book written by me, a foreign guidebook in regards to herbal medicines as well as a copy of an anatomy book by de Liuzzi himself. How she was able to get her hands on such books is unknown to me, but her ability to read and speak both Panymese and Yiruian…I can see as only beneficial towards this field. After all, there may be potential secrets of her culture and knowledge that reside in her brain and she can act as a translator if need be.

You see, dear Dean, A Mrs. Lulu Rogers declared the intention to find a cure or a counterpart to poisons. However, there was a slight gleam in her eyes as she spoke--and I believe she's more interested in the actual poisons herself, whether she believes so or not. At this moment in time, I cannot tell what this means about her nature. I cannot tell if she’d even be willing to actually help us with our cause, but I’m hoping, sire, that we could watch her closely and observe her experimentations to see what we can get out of her.

In regards to proving how useful this young woman would be, I had her attempt an experiment that was understandably too difficult for someone to perform—even I have difficulty with it myself. The experiment I helped her with was quite simple in terms of understanding what the goal was. My intention was for her to test her knowledge and see if she would realize which ingredients could be potentially used as cures. I also wanted to see if she could potentially know what would cause which simulations to the test subjects—in this case, rats.

With toxicology being such a new field, even those who have practiced this for years cannot specifically identify such factors. But Mrs. Rogers was determined, and while she told me of her utterly disappointment in herself for failing to succeed in her task, she still had an air of…authority around her--as well as a fulfillment of a job well done. It confused me greatly, how her words were able to say one thing, yet simple observations of her posture was able to tell me otherwise. While I do not know the true intentions of this woman, I do not believe that she knows either.

I've always had the saying "All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; only the dose permits something not to be poisonous." Mrs. Lulu Rogers has a rather rough method, and isn't afraid to...overdo things to get the results she wishes to discover. When given ingredients to make poison with that had the potential to kill the rats--but was made specifically to elongate the passing over--Lulu Rogers somehow saw this as an opportunity to make the poison stronger and immediately kill the rats. In a matter of days, she was able to mix some medicine that slowed the rats' deaths, even if they were by mere seconds.

Doctor, I request that Lulu Rogers be able to join our humble Council. I intend to take this woman under my wing to utilize her abilities and watch her flourish in her own studies as well as have her aid me in my own. Judging from her Panymese surname, I also assume that this woman may have funds that would be able to back up our cause, and would encourage her to be able to pull toxicology into a new direction.

Thank you for your time.

-- Doctor von Hohenheim

"Impressive." di Liuzzi commented. "I'm not quite understand what's so unique about toxicol--"

"What are you trying to say. di Liuzzi?" Doctor von Hohenheim interrupted. "Ah, nothing, Paracelsus. Don't think too much about my words." "Well, you best be off to the gathering then. I must deliver this letter to the Dean's.

Ⅳ. SLEEP DEPRIVED

Lulu goes through a hallucination and has to deal with a difficult question that can never be answered.
Lulu heaved in a huge gulp of air. She didn't--couldn't--comprehend what was happening to her. The other day, she and Ellison D. West successfully saved Basil Darling (who didn't have the key to his bookshop much to Lulu's frustration) but it was extremely late at night, and the crew had to get out of Auvinus immediately. To be frank, the southern region of Panymium spooked Lulu--and that was hard to do. However, the strange events these past few weeks have, perhaps, gotten to her. After all, what's this sand doing here?

Saving Basil Darling was difficult, as Auvinus was in a state of destruction as well. But luckily for the trio, Imperial Guards had invaded the headquarters at Foxbrook, which served as a vital distraction as well as allowed for an escape on their part. If only there was such a force that invaded the Imperial Guards' headquarters back in Gadu.

But focusing back on now, Lulu really didn't know what was happening to her. It was hard to breathe--hard to formulate thoughts. She wondered if she was the only one experiencing this. Why was it, that whenever pit stops were made, just something had to go wrong?

She had never had to deal with such trouble before--and frankly, she just wished none of this happened. She wished for things to be simple again--or, at the least, for things to go her way. Why is it that there had to be so many obstacles to get what she wanted?

Lulu stumbled here and there--and luckily (but at the same time unluckily), no one tried to approach her. Perhaps she wasn't the only one who was going through this unfavorable state of mind? She was also paranoid because she felt yet another presence following her. A black spot--she couldn't see anything more in her haze.

"W-who's there...?" Lulu put her hand over her eyes as they began to sting. Her body felt like it was about to collapse, but she was still wobbling.

No response.

Ⅴ. NO SYMPATHY FOR YOU

Lulu rejects beggars
Lulu had her own problems. As established before, she was never one to help others unless there was a specific purpose as to why she should. And so, whenever someone came up to prod her for money, she simply shoo'd them away. "Pardon me, sire, I'm in a rush." She'd say, before nonchalantly sashaying away.

She was in this for herself only. After aiding in the rescues of both Basil Darling and Ellison West--Lulu was done with the facade. She had enough of what went on--and really, it got her nowhere. Ellies ended up not having the darn key to the bookstore regardless, and neither did Basil.

There really wasn't anything to do anymore--and while it was true that everyone was suffering during these times, Lulu was never one to feel sympathy. She had her own problems to deal with and lacked answers to important questions like where to go, what to do?

When the "tax collector" came by demanding for money, she simply said no. "You...Y-you can't just refuse to pay your taxes, Missus!!" He was flabbergasted.

She hm'd and hum'd. "I believe I just did, sire." And she'd sashay again.

Lulu Rogers was used to seeing angry men. After all, she was usually the one who provoked them. Even with that in mind, she didn't expect what was to come. Usually, when she sashayed away, they were distracted by her body--or simply shrugged it off, finding "better" things to do--such as drinking.

The tax collector didn't want to give up. "C-come back here, thief!" She swiftly turned to look at him with disbelief. Really, now? Lulu was in rage. She didn't even have any--wait...she still had her jewelry on her.

However, if the man wanted to play this way, she would happily oblige.

Ⅵ. MR ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD

Lulu visits home after everything is done and reminisces about the area.
As it was, the Rogers Estate in Gadu was, in fact, demolished.

Lulu Rogers had a regular day ate the start of it all. It was quite simple, really. Breakfast by the hands of Susan, a nice walk in the neighborhood—she figured she was living the good life. These past few months had been eventless for Lulu Rogers, but it didn’t bother her. After all, what wasn’t nice about being able to lull around in bed and not having to deal with any sorts of obligations? Many would kill to be in her position—which is why she’s taking full advantage of it.

She knows she’s been dwelling on the past for more than what she’s comfortable with. After all, before Alfred’s demise, her mantra had always been Look forward--nowhere else.

So where did it all go wrong?

Lulu began walking through the rubble. She came back to Gadu because...to be quite frank, there was nowhere else to go. But the more she came to associate herself with the area, the more she began to think about things that didn't matter to her--things in the past she would have simply thrown away. Now, they kept a place in a corner of her brain, setting up camp to occupy her thoughts.

Every street corner drew back memories. It was nauseating. She remembered the first time Alfred brought her to Gadu. She remembered when she and Mr. Rogers would walk around the neighborhood. She remembered when he kissed her hand under the cherry oak tree on their first anniversary. She remembered when he turned that last corner. She remembered the path that led Mr. Alfred Rogers to his death.

Was it really okay to stay in Gadu? No. She knew it wasn't. After what happened with the mysterious black-caped man...she had to go. She was free now, wasn't she? She wasn't bound to the city--and after traveling with the two men, and making her own decisions, she knew now more than ever that she didn't have to stay in Gadu. While it was a grand city, there was no real purpose for her to stay behind. Alfred's factory was being handled by a Mr. Lindabury, who sent her monthly reports. All she had to do was write him a letter stating to send the reports and money to a different address.

The man's question haunted her. Is Alfred Rogers really gone? He may be, physically dead, but, Lulu knew that death didn't mean anything. At least, now she did. She didn't know what to believe--whether this was all magic or a hallucination, but she would fight it. She would fight back. She wasn't going to let a dead person take over her life--especially when she sacrificed so much to be where she was now.

Lulu took one last glance back to the former Rogers estate. She fixed her cloak, and began to walk. Perhaps she'll find some solace elsewhere. Perhaps, if she were to go away from Gadu, she'd be able to escape from the past once again.

Ⅶ. THE USUAL SUSPECTS

Lulu returns to Mr. Darling's Bookstore
It seemed so far away now--the beginning of it all. To think that she spent the last two months with little to no progress in terms of moving forward. Regardless of what she learned with the toxicology book as well as what Doctor von Hohenheim gave her, she yearned for more. Once Basil was out and it was discovered that he didn't have the key, Lulu had no use of him anymore--and the journey was utterly useless (at least it's what Lulu thought for the moment).

Not even days after the group's abrupt parting, Lulu was still frustrated. Still, to this day, she did not have her hands on the book she desired. She wanted to get...a sort of revenge on Basil Darling. If it wasn't for him, she wouldn't be in this mess anyway. (It wasn't true, but Lulu always found ways to blame things on other people.)

Ⅸ. LOVE, I'M HERE TO STAY

Just when Lulu thought she escaped her fate...
...she saw him again. A crow knocked at her window in her new estate in Rosstead. After the events in Gadu, she didn't want to stay there anymore. Of course, staying in Imisus, she would still be visiting the capital city, but...Lulu needed a change of scene.

And this crow was not helping.

At this point, Lulu gave up wondering what the crows actually were and if it was the same crow or if they were multiple ones. You see, Lulu had thought that it was Alfred that was bothering her--but as time went on, she noticed that the crows bothered Ellison and Basil and others as well. It didn't make sense for Alfred to call on such an attack (and have the ability to in the first place)--unless he felt angry that...no one really remembered him? Lulu couldn't place a finger on it, and quite frankly, she didn't care.

She wanted this to be over and done with already--she wanted Alfred out of her mind. Why is it that he was still haunting her?

She looked at the crow and thought back to the Ides of March. Oh how long ago that was...And once again, the crow held a piece of parchment, knocking on the window, waiting for her to open it.

Lulu did, and when she reached out for the parchment, the crow cocked his head and cawed--letting it fall to the floor. Lulu rose her eyebrow in slight curiosity. This crow was a bit dumber than the others. She watched it fly away, as one wing was flapping slower than the other. A strange sight.

As Lulu bent to pick up the parchment, she wondered what would happen. It feels crispy, and the ribbon around the parchment slips easy. When she opens it, once again, the parchment was blank.

Quote:
"What a successful trial this was," the voice coos while the parchment withers and falls between your fingers as specks of dust, "I must say, all you Grimms are a troubled lot."

Lulu opened her mouth to retort, but something was changing.

Quote:
The ribbon seeps and liquefies, sunk in a black aura, and without a moment's warning it slinks over to you like a tired beast. Instead of disappearing, it juts and freezes in form, moment by moment twitching in mass, exhausting back into the liquefied form, then becoming bigger and bigger as the moments pass.

"You see, I've learned something from all of you, what two-thousand and growing lot there are, and what few hundred have seemingly passed my trials alive. This aura, this Furvus Elixir, it's truly what you make of it... and I've been deceived all along, and so have you. Welcome to my world of smoke and mirrors."

"What on Profugus are you talking about?" Lulu screamed in frustration. This was scarier than before, the black goo she began to fear seemed to be growing and growing even more. Smoke? Mirrors? The Elixir? She felt even more lost and confused than she was before. She wanted nothing to do with it. Why was this still happening to her?

She gasped in horror when she saw the next transformation.

Quote:
The black form with limbs rolls over, shivering and crumpled in on itself, now fully in form. Neck arched upward, it looks at you, a featureless face with a pair of glimmering white and pearl-round eyes. It saunters up into a kneel, the height of a fully grown man, and its shoulders shiver and form a floating and paper-thin cloak around its visage, its entire form a silhouette. The form slowly walks up to you, hand extended, eyes still shimmering with white, the very image of Mr. Rogers painted in monotone.

"Because, Lulu Rogers...I'm here to stay. You can't erase me--it's impossible. Whose last name do you bear? Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Rogers...You'll never be anyone else. They know who you are out there. You should hear what they say about you! What wonderful things they say."

"You're not real!" Lulu Rogers felt like a little girl again--she felt like she was six, and when her mother told her about the qilin--and if little Liu was to do anything bad, the qilin would surely come and punish her. "You're dead. I mad sure of it!" She looked around for any type of weapon she could use.

The psuedo-Mr. Rogers laughed a hearty laugh. His hearty laugh that Lulu grew to hate. A hearty laugh that would turn out to be his dying laugh as Lulu called him out to the forest that fateful night.

"I'll always exist so long as you do, love," it cooed at her--walking closer, and Lulu closed her eyes. This would all go away if she didn't believe it was there. "After all, why do you still keep my cloak if you wanted me gone?

When she opened her eyes again, she saw an unfamiliar grin, an unfamiliar face. It extended its hand out toward her. "Do you remember what day it is, dear?" Lulu did--and she didn't want to admit it. "Happy Anniversary, Lulu." It cackled again. "Take good care of my cloak. I'm giving it to you as a gift from me to you." The monotone version of the cloak flapped back and forth.

She reached up to slap its hand away--but just before she was able to touch it, it screamed in anguish. Lulu wondered for a slight second if she had anything to do with it.

It begins to melt, and Lulu rushes away from the goo that was beginning to catch up to her. She met her back against the wall as she heaved another breath, catching herself, staring at the black puddle that surrounded her.

She won't be able to sleep tonight.

Ⅺ. CURTSY TO YOU, MAMA |
Hey Young Believer - Waking Up on the Floor
Lulu's cloak is missing!
This couldn't be happening. She knew she placed it right on this very table! Why must keeping this cloak be so...so troublesome! Honestly, she didn't know why she was still keeping it. After all, if she could, she would tear it up and...and...

Lulu sighed to herself. Obviously, she couldn't do that even if she wanted to. It was the only thing that tied her to Alfred, and it would forever haunt her. Even if she tried to get rid of it, the nightmares would return and she obtained it once more. She knew, for she already tried.

And so, Lulu began her hunt. She wanted to look every nook and cranny for the blasted thing, but the only thing Lulu wouldn't do was go on her knees. Absolutely not! She wasn't that desperate to keep the blasted thing.

Lulu swore to herself, right then and there, to never stay in an inn ever again. It didn't help that it was a dingy rat hole.

Mama...! C-can you hear me?"

Lulu squinted and squinted, trying to see what was tickling her ear.
