Oh I know where he went! He stayed in the underworld to fight against what I guess is the 'devil' in an effort to gain more power.

Wrong! You've never played the first one, either, I guess. Vergil went on to face the being known as Mundus. Players of the first game will recognize him as the main villain and final boss from DMC1. Vergil realized that Sparda's seal on Mundus was weakening, and so he attempted to beat Mundus back into submission and reseal him, to protect Dante from him. He was too weak after his last fight with Dante, so he was defeated, and his mind enslaved by Mundus. He appears as a reoccurring boss in DMC1. He is known as Nelo Angelo. They don't reveal until the end of the game that this figure is actually Vergil, when Dante discovers that Nelo Angelo has Vergil's amulet. Curious, Dante knocked off his mask to reveal the truth. He was never seen to be killed, so Vergil's whereabouts are now unknown.

Ah poop. Well I was going based off of my experience with DMC3, only one I've really played through.

I played 1-3 and finished 2, I think, but that was a good few months ago. =O
