From what I've heard, you can recruit Alvis in Awakening as a DLC (spotpass character). Sure, he's now a face with a name and numbers and has nothing else to him... but... *Looks at my previous post* yeah...

Selena and Glen were honorable generals and their deaths deserved playability, even if it was at the end of the game, but only on Hard difficulty, like you get Selena if you played Ephraim's story and Glen if you played Eirika.
...Thus making an easy game.....even easier...
but its a win for us lazy people (like myself, for instance...)

Wait a second... You could recruit Selena in Ephraim Hard Mode? BLASPHEMY! I could do no such thing!

Maybe he meant the secret characters in FE8 for going through the Tower of Valni and the Lagdou Ruins enough times?

Exactly. Enemy generals (and some ally generals) in FE8 cannot be recruited in the story mode; any of those characters are recruitable through the Tower and Ruins. Check Serenes Forest for the others.
