Mercury tried even harder to impersonate a stone. There was nothing he could do about the sound now, except try not to make any more. This was turning out to be fun!

Runaiu was growing tired of this, but also was enjoying herself. She liked playing with the kit, even if she wished he wasn't so damn small! She couldn't see why he wouldn't have parents, he was easy to deal with somewhat, as far as she knew at least.
She wasn't paying attention to where she was stepping, sighing under her breath. She didn't know Mercury's scent yet, so it was hard to find the little kit. That is, until her foot landed square on the kits body, surprising her and sending the vixen into a fit. She yipped, leaping away from the fluff she had stepped on that had to be Mercury.
"Whoa! Holy moonflower! Are you okay?"

Mercury's yip was one of surprise more than pain. He'd been curled up so tight, trying to make himself as small as possible, that even if Runaiu had stepped on soft flesh it wouldn't have done much damage. As it was she only get his side, with plenty of bone for protection.
"What's a moonflower," was his only question. Odd, maybe, but Mercury was always curious about new things.

Runaiu stared at him in shock, raising an eyebrow. A tough kit? Hm. Maybe she should have stepped on his head, smarten him up a bit. 'No. Be nice to the rainbow runt.' It was all Unia's fault she had a conscience. She approached the male, startled by his question. He was stepped on, and all he asked was what a moonflower was? Hell.
"My sister is a shaman, ask her. I just overheard her saying something about moonflowers healing insomnia or something." She answered, flipping her tail at Mercury, testing him. "You're a strange kit."

"If you say so then I must be," Mercury responded cheerfully. He liked Runaiu, she was nice and played games and answered questions. Being called strange didn't bother him either. It actually felt more like a compliment.
He grinned a little as Runaiu's tail flicked against him. "Very soft and silky!" And it was, Mercury just figured stating the obvious and giving compliments would keep her happy. "You wanna hide next?"

She raised an eyebrow at him, sighing. "I guess. Go count." She padded off to the water, sitting on her haunches and waiting for the kit to start counting. She was having a fun, but he didn't need to know that. Maybe...she should ask. No. Forget it. She would humor him and then leave. Be rid of him forever. But...
NO!

Mercury had curled up again and planted his face to the ground so Runaiu would see he wasn't peeking. "One, two, three," he started, deciding to go all the way to thirty. He'd only had twenty seconds, but he'd had a head start.
"Thirty!" Mercury sat up and began looking around. So far the tall grass blocked most of his view. He began to wander through it towards a flatter area to better look around in.

She had dipped into the water. Yes, Runaiu had actually moved into dirty water. Maybe she was distracted, maybe she was having fun with Mercury, either way somehow the kit had gotten her to slip into water she normally would refuse to even touch. The grey/blue fox had swam to the bottom, curling into a tight ball. She would need air eventually, but she would be patient as she hid.

Mercury stood on the shore of the pond that was a mix of sand, dirt, old plants, and pebbles. He peered around at the grass. Some spots were quite short, Runaiu couldn't be hiding there. The tall grass might be out as well. There was an interesting rock formation just to the side of the field, he'd start there!
Mercury bounded off to go check the boulders, keeping one eye on the long grass next to him just in case.

Runaiu needed to breathe quicker than she had expected, pushing off the bottom of the water and surfacing quickly. She took quick gulps of air, trying to keep quiet so Mercury couldn't hear her. Swiftly she dived downwards once more, shivering as the cold water enveloped her once more.

Mercury paused, halfway to the rocks. He sat and cocked his head, tilting an ear in the direction of the lake. He could have sworn he heard something disturb the surface. Fish, maybe. He shrugged and continued his trot to examine the rocks.

Once more she had to resurface, gasping this time as she did so. Okay, so maybe swimming wasn't her strong point. The vixen stayed above water for a good few minuets, grasping for air before once more kicking to the bottom. However, she didn't stay there, instead moving to the top and swimming to the waters edge, hiding all of her face except her muzzle, using it to breathe but still stay underwater. How did she get in this position again?

(( XD Poor Runaiu!))
Mercury was trotting back from the rocks, slightly dejected. He'd been sure Runaiu would be over there! Now he was heading back to the pond to start another search.
The sound of something breaking water reached his ears again, this time with something gasping for breath. Curious, Mercury ran towards the pond as quick as his little legs would carry him. He didn't make it in time to see what had made the noise, but the surface of the water was still rippling from the disturbance.
Mercury hadn't thought Runaiu would climb in the water to hide from him. Now he wasn't so sure. He waited by the edge, peering into the water and trying to spot the blue-gray coat.

((She's a stubborn one. Lol.))
That was it! She was so not waiting her anymore! Look at her fur, it was...it was...it was wet! Probably damaged by all the water, too! This kit was so going to be dead if she had anything to say about it. The soft sound of footsteps alerted her to his arrival, spotting some of his fur slightly to the right of her. Oh? So he hadn't noticed her?
Good.
She suddenly whisked her tail out, shoving the kit into the water with it. She swam over to Mercury and angled her body so it would cup him, wrapping her tail around him so he couldn't move, and then dived downwards. She stayed there for a few seconds before pushing back to the surface, releasing Mercury first so he could breathe first.

Unfortunately for Mercury, Runaiu's first surprise move, shoving him in the water, caused him to gasp and lose all his air. Therefore he panicked slightly more at being held under water than he would have if he'd had the time to refill his lungs.
As soon as his head hit the surface he inhaled the air so fast it almost created a sonic boom. Never the best of swimmers, he still lit it for the shore like piranahs were on his tail. He sat on the rocky sand, a huddling mass of dripping black and rainbow fur.
To anyone who didn't know him quite well, the kit may have looked cowed. In reality he was plotting revenge. It was only fair, Runaiu had made the first move after all!
