Science Lesson!

Quote:
Last I checked, our species' evolution went something like this: Ancient apes->Ardipithecus kadabba->Ar. ramidus->Australopithecus anamensis->A. afarensis->A. africanus->A. garhi->Homo habilis (Handy Man)->Homo ergaster->Homo erectus (Upright Man)->Homo heidelbergensis (Heidelberg Man)->Homo sapiens (Wise Man; us, modern humans, et cetera).

This is something I posted in an ED thread. Thought I'd share. mrgreen

Another thing I posted in a different thread; this time about reincarnation.

My views on this subject are hard to explain. As there is no "soul," reincarnation is not the transfer of one soul into another body after death. There is nothing permanent in this world, and everything is in a state of flux. Buddha once said, "Every moment you are born, decay, and die." Our concept of the self changes constantly, and is thus being born, decaying, dying, and being reborn. Reincarnation is not the transfer of a soul into another body in this sense, but a metaphor for our ever changing mindset, conditions, and positions in life. The six realms of existence are a good metaphor for these mindsets. One's karma determines which mindset they're in, which "realm" they've been "reborn" into.

Nirvana is the escape from this cycle of "rebirth." It is true peace, unlike the temporary upper realms.

Beyond this metaphoric definition of reincarnation, if one were to examine the concept of rebirth from one lifetime to another in a Buddhist sense, the best metaphor would be an ocean. An individual is like a wave on the ocean; it begins, moves for a while, and dissipates. It is distinct from the ocean, but still a part of it. Reincarnation is the same, each person that pops up in this world is unique, but still connected.

In conclusion, yes, I believe in reincarnation, both metaphorically and literally, but the next person's not me, just another wave in this ocean we call existence. And that's all I have to say for now.

A couple of threads in the Sociology & Psychology prompted this post.
My personality:
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
ISTP with a butt-load of SJ tendencies.
The results of several online psych tests:
1. I took this Asperger's test 5 times and answered as truthfully as I could: 35 was the average of the scores, and 80% of those diagnosed with this or related disorders got 32 or higher. However, I've never been officially tested for, let alone diagnosed with, Asperger's Syndrome.
2. 53 [moderate to severe] (Depression test; I have chronic depression, this was expected).
3. 1 on an OCD test. No way I got this. xp
4. 28 (Adult ADHD test; borderline, but I doubt I actually have it).

*Strange moaning fills grotto*
"Oh, that's not good." Manguusu makes a 180 and dashes towards the door as a horde of zombies shows up at the far end of the cavern.
"Twi! I suggest you move too!"

Manguusu then realizes that the hole in the ceiling was caused by a meteor that had landed in the back of the room. "115 is real?! WTF?!" He thought.

Manguusu bolted awake. "WAH! Huh?" He was next to his rock. "It was a dream... I must have fell asleep while meditating; there's no zombies here! Hah!"
He went inside and packed a small bag. "I think I'll go on a pilgrimage through Asia. 54 shrines and 54 temples." He paused. "Where should I start?" he thought. "Ah I know!" Manguusu grabbed a dart and threw it at the world map on his wall. It landed on Malaysia. Locking the main entrance to the cavern, he posted a note on the door:
"Out wandering the Earth visiting holy places-- Manguusu"

Ryunosuke Akutagawa's The Spider's Thread
As told by ruzickaw
Transliterated by Devon Weatherwax

I will tell you the story of the great robber Kandata, who died without repentance and was thrown into Hell, where he suffered for his evil deeds.

It happened that one day Buddha was strolling on the shore of the lotus pond in Paradise. He paused at the edge of the pond and saw between the lotus flowers down into the depths of Hell, that lays directly below the lotus pond in paradise.

Through the crystal clear water Buddha could see Kandata suffering in the depths of Hell, along with other sinners. Kandata was a master thief and a murderer, who had killed many people. Yet Buddha recalled, "This criminal has done a single good deed in his life. Once, when Kandata was traveling through a dense forest, he saw a spider crawling along the roadside. Kandata immediately raised his foot and was about to trample it to death, when he suddenly thought, 'This little spider is a living being; why should I take its life for no reason?' So Kandata did not kill the spider, but placed it on one side of the road. In return for having done just that one good deed, I shall try to rescue this sinner from Hell." Buddha saw nearby a spider spinning a silver web on a lotus petal. He took the spider's thread gently into his hands, and lowered it between the white lotus blossoms straight into the distant Hell.

In the depths of Hell, along with the other sinners Kandata was floating up and sinking back down over and over again. It was completely dark. Suddenly, Kandata raised his head, and saw in the blackness above him a thin line, shimmering in the darkness, slowly descending toward him. Kandata thought, "If I cling to this thread, and climb it to its end, I might be able to escape from Hell." Hah! Kandata quickly took hold of the spider's thread with both hands and began climbing up and up, hand over hand. As a former master thief, he had done this many times, but because Hell is quite far away from Paradise Kandata, after climbing for a while, got tired and had to take a rest.

While hanging onto the thread, he looked down, and saw that thanks to his effort Hell was now already hidden at the bottom of the darkness below him. "Ha ha ha ha! If I continue at this pace, escaping from Hell might not be as difficult as I expected." Wrapping his hand around the spider's thread, he cried out "Heh, I'm saved! Heh heh I'm saved at last! Heheheh...." Then, he looked down again and saw hundreds of sinners, from the bottom of the dark Hell, climbing up the thin spider's thread in a single file, like a line of ants. Kandata froze from fear. "How can this thin spider's thread, seemingly strained even under the weight of just me alone, be able to support the weight of so many?! If the thread breaks, I, who had at great pains have climbed this far and all the others will fall headlong back into Hell!" So Kandata yelled down, "Hey you sinners! This spider's thread is mine! Who allowed you to climb it?! Get off!" Just as he yelled at the other sinners, the spider's thread suddenly broke, with a snap, right where Kandata was hanging. Kandata, without even time to cry out, was falling head first back into the dark depths of Hell. Only the broken spider's thread dangled in the air, glittering dimly.

Buddha, standing on the shore of the lotus pond in Paradise, saw everything. When Kandata fell like a stone to the bottom of Hell, Buddha though, "Kandata wanted to escape just by himself. He felt no compassion for all the others. Falling back into Hell, is a just punishment." Then Buddha went on strolling, seemingly sad. But the lotus blossoms in the lotus pond of Paradise were not concerned in the least about what had happened.
