Just keep in mind that the Mary Sue litmus tests are very subjective, since they rely on your particular interpretation of your character, and just because your character passes, it doesn't mean they're actually a good character. In the same token, a character might get a high score, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're a bad character. It's all about how you play them. 3nodding

Oh yes of course ;P.
Still useful, I think.

Or fun. Mostly fun.

I tried both tests and one said I needed more spice to her and the other said she was too close to being a sue because of the things she knows how to do but not successfully. So she's either too boring because she hasn't been with a man in eight years or she's too close to being a Sue because she knows magic.

One of the tests asked about having someone die in her arms and I had to literally think twice about her position in the room when her husband finally died after his decade long battle with Gaian ALS. xp

@ Chibi: I actually like your character- OH! Thanks again for helping me fix mine, I swear to God if I had not asked questions Luciano would be a damn Gary Stu! :3 Thanks again!

@ The Topic: I haven't done one of those tests yet- to be honest, I'm scared of the results redface .

I don't really like those Mary Sue tests. I know someone who has a character that scored relatively high, but the character is excellent and well played.

The tests are based on cliches, and even though you don't really want to have a lot of cliches with your character, its not like its a BAD thing, its all in how you portray it.

That's pretty much what Haijin said. The test is just a subjective thing and probably should be taken with a grain of salt or something. 3nodding

At least the test really works well for people who are terrible writers (likemyself) and need to be told in test form or so. ninja Like what Meushi said about that one cake burning character, My Immortal and FaCe ThE StRaNgE.

Oh GODS My Immortal. I couldn't even make it through the first couple of sentences of that before it started to rot my brain. It was painful. DX

Ahaha. I'd listen to a dramatic reading by someone, because he had a great voice for it.

[Pats Sil] There, there.

Oh! I also love those people that throw a b***h-fit every single time someone wants romantic involvement with another Character, but gets rejected! And then they "kill the person's entire family because they wouldn't go out with them", OH!! And THEN they Baww about it in the OOC Thread thinking it will up their chances of their character getting a girlfriend/getting laid.

Don't ever complain about NOT getting attention in a Role Play. EVER. There are reasons as to why people aren't interacting with your character, for example: They could be stuck in a blasted Elevator, orrrrrr they could be several feet away and can't hear you shouting, "I SAAAAID, DOES MY ******** HAIR LOOK ALRIGHT??" (which. . . more than likely doesn't, since they're using an Emo/Scene kid's picture. . .)

That's another thing. What is said in the context of the role-play threads will be between characters only. If you're having a minor fight with someone outside of the RP don't transfer that over to your character if they happen to be interacting with the character of the person you're fighting with. Conversely, if a person's character says your character is a total jerk don't think that means they think that about you. While it's okay to put a little of yourself into your characters, you shouldn't let your emotions and your thoughts about other players influence how your characters act in an RP.

In example, I was in an RP a few years back where I really didn't have a good handle how my character would react to what other characters would do. I let my personal feelings about a player affect how I played my character. On top of that, my friend at the time pretty much told me it was okay to use personal feelings to fuel my RP posts. I could have had a much better character if personal feelings and how I felt about what was being posted was left out of how my character reacted to the character she was dealing with. So think about the type of person your character is when dealing with their reactions to a particular situation.

While the Mary Sue tests are helpful if your character relies on cliches, I don't think we have characters like that... right? I admit, that angst scene from the Cove is kinda weird, but... she has difficulties moving on. As Sin said, take them with a grain of salt. In the end, it all depends on who's behind the character, and if that person is competent, so will the character.

Also, what Chibi said, which is really important: your character and you are two different people with two different lives, so don't drag out-of-roleplay issues into the RP.

For me, this also helps build character continuity and consistency: take various obstacles, from the cliches found in jRPGs to new scenarios and ask yourself, "What would Jesus (OC's Name Here) do?" especially helps to try and test out weaknesses and strengths.

Both of what you say has a really good point.

I remember rping with this girl in highschool. She was awesome. Super sweet and kind and was just sugar and fluff. However she played this super nasty evil witch character. Holy crap man, the things she would come up with for that character were so dark and twisted I always wondered where they heck it came from! She ended up killing one of my characters in a rather sick away. And then the next day in real life was like "I'm SOOOOO sorry!!" Ah good times.

The first mary-sue test said Petite is not a sue with a whopping score of 9. The second test said she was border-line sue with a score of 27. I giggled.

Anyway, a lot of the questions on the tests are not about the character, but plot devices and circumstances. Ah, well. They're cute. smile

Kids I'd like to address another role-play no no here because I have the feeling it's likely to happen here with how things are going. Plus, it's a good thing to remember when you're dealing with massively huge role-play forums in a set world. The world/setting for the role-play does not bend to your character your character adapts to the world/setting when creating them.

If it's stated in any setting to any role-play that certain races, abilities, weapons, or technologies exists then that's what you work with. If your setting is early Nineteenth century Tennessee then don't give your character magical powers or a modern day uzi for a weapon. Also, it's most likely they'll be wearing things made out of buckskin and living in log cabins not in an apartment near Beale Street walking around in chain-mail and a leather breastplate. If it's said on the world that two races don't associate with each other or are physically incapable of reproducing don't make a half breed who is shunned by both races or destined by the gods to exist just to have one. If the race you chose is physically incapable of performing a particular ability then don't make them the first person to fight genetics and become a pioneering hero to their people.

It's highly suggested that you read over the setting and related history for any role-play before you go ahead and start creating characters and situations to take place.

When creating an RP character that happens to be a Hybrid, don't do anything stupid like: Neko Demon and a Dog Demon with 3/4 Demon mixed. . . Not only is it kinda stupid, but it also genetically WOULD NOT WORK! Which brings me to this: Angel and Demon Hybrids: DON'T DO IT!- Not only is it on the road to being a possible instrument of God Modding/GodModing, but it's also going to more than likely be a sue/stu. That, and in actuality (well, in Angel/Demonlore anyway) that s**t wouldn't even HAPPEN!
So, when making a Hybrid please be creative. . . but don't be a dumbass with it.
