"its a good lesson to learn. I won't soon forget mine" tilting her head a little, stroking her side gently, trying to get it to stop throbbing
"I disobeyed an order, the elites said run, and I didn't obey right away, it ended up causing more confusion then was needed"

Zach nodded thoughtfully, "You're right about that... So, was that what caused you to get that injury?" he asked, directed toward the injury she was currently nursing.

"Thankfully no" she said with a sigh, "if it was I would probably be in even more trouble then I am now. I got this later, from a stray bullet"
glancing to the GPS another time, following the instructions on it. they were starting to ascend higher in elevation as they headed toward the mountains.

Zach looked out the window, noticing the change of elevation he said, "Looks like we're almost there." He couldn't say that he was necessarily eager to go stomping through the snow looking for a backpack, but he was ready to get it over with.

“Yeah I’d say” the increased amount of snow she was spotting around the sides of the path they were taking was a clear indication of that they were starting to get closer.
“We’re going to have to take some of it by foot.” She told him, pointing to the GPS.

Zach shrugged. "Eh, what's a little more walking in these circumstances? By the time we're through, I'm sure this will be just a drop in the bucket."

"I know, I was just giving you a heads up. Since we're going to be running out of rode here pretty quick"

No much longer after saying that, Faleen slowed the vehicle down, her weight shifting so that she was sitting up taller to look down over the hood, getting a better view of the ground in front.
It took her a while to get the vehicle positioned in an appropriate position.
Putting it into park, pulling up the emergency break and turning the ignition off, Faleen let out a soft sigh, stepping out into the snow, a dull crunch under her feet as she headed to the back to get the gear.

Zach got out of the vehicle and took stock of the surroundings. It didn't look like there was any nasty weather coming, but that could change rather quickly. As he picked up his backpack, he tested the snow a bit to check it's consistency. It was somewhat compact and hard snow. He glanced to Faleen and said, "So far it looks like we aren't going to have bad weather... yet. That could change rather quickly though, it's hard to tell in mountains of this sort."

Looking to what she could see of the sky through the reaching branches of the ever-woods. The dingy gray of the sickly looking clouds motionless and sickly, chilling the sky and everything below.
Zach had said it wasn't bad weather, she wasn't looking forward to what the bad weather did look like.

Breathing out heavily once, before ducking her face and nose into the neck of her jacket, taking only a moment in silence to strap on her pack, before she reached back in to grab the map.

With the van locked up, and hidden, Faleen started in the direction they were indicated to go... but it was shortly after she started that she knew she wasn't going to be able to get them very far.
thankfully, Zach was going to be able to help with that, so she handed the map to him.
"I guess the first lesson would be how to use a map"
PostPosted: Mon Jun 14, 2010 11:35 pm

Zach accepted the map and pulled out a compass. "Alright, first things first. When using a map, be sure to use a compass with it. You see that symbol in the corner with the N on top? That means that North is that direction so you need to find North on your compass, basically to figure out which way to hold your map."

At this Zach did just that, resulting in having the map flipped the opposite way around. "That way you won't accidentally go the exact opposite direction you are trying to go. So, this is where we are, right here."

Zach pointed to a certain point on the map not far from where they were supposed to set up their camp site. "See these lines? They represent altitude. In this case crossing from one light line to the next is 40 ft., with darker lines being 200 ft apart. so we would want to take this route,"

Zach traced a route that somewhat followed the contour line with his finger. "as it should be the most efficient. Now, this down here is the map's legend. It should let you know various important features on the map, which will vary from map to map. Right now what we need to know is how far from the planned camping site we are. This line here says that one inch is equal to about 1 mile, and the camping site is about... 1 and a half inches away on the map. So we have one and a half miles of hiking to do before we get there at least. The rest we can go over along the way. Make sure you have everything you need, because I doubt we will be going back here until our mission is done."

As Zach said this he looked over all his stuff himself, checking one last time to make sure he had everything. It wouldn't do to head into this kind of mountain for a long period of time unprepared. As he finished he said "Oh, and for right now try not to use anything that has a limited power source unless in an emergency, otherwise you may run out of power when you need it most. You ready to head off?"

keeping quite while she listened through Zach's instructions, once she understood what everything meant, the map wasn't that hard to read at all.
Feeling a little more proud that she knew how to do at least one of the many things she would need to learn, she glanced over her shoulder to her bag. then let her gaze fall onto the van, letting each step run through her mind again to make sure she hadn't left anything behind.
Once she was sure she nodded and looked back over to Zach.
"I don't think we have much in the way of electronics anyway" she said, with an awkward twitch from the corner of her mouth. "but I'll keep that in mind"

Right now, she was more concerned for the mile and a half hike they had to do... she already felt a little sick from just driving up here with a throbbing wound.
Zach was going to have to go at a slower pace, unless he just decided to leave her behind, something she wouldn't blame him for.

She looked like she was ready, so Zach dug through his bag and handed her some orange ribbons. "Here, help me with this, I decided it would be best to use these to mark the route we took. This way we can find our way back to the vehicle easier on the way back, and if we get separated then it should be simpler to find eachother as well. Be sure to spread it out some, as we don't want to use them all up before we get there, and it wouldn't do to make it easy to have others find the vehicle either."

He tied the 1st ribbon on a tree to show her how to do it as an example, and then started off down the trail, and after traveling a certain ways, pointed to another tree, "This would probably be a good distance between marks I think."

This wasn't strictly necessary Zach knew. After all, if they could navigate their way to the camp from there with just the map, they could navigate back just as easily most likely, but this would be a good way to give an excuse for her to stop every now and then since he doubted she would manage well with a 1 1/2 mile hike injured as she was.

Looking at the Ribbon as it was placed into her hand Faleen frowned curiously, listening to what they were going to be used for, this raised a few concerns.
"wouldn't it be a bad idea to mark our presence. if someone else should find this, as slim a chance as it could be, we might end up being seen or our vehicle discovered."
She walked after him though, watching him tie the first ribbon.
It would be a good idea so they don't get lost, she knew if they didn't do this there chances of finding there vehicle were smaller, but if they kept track of the distance and the way they went, shouldn't they be able to find the truck? then again, he did know better when it came to the mountains.
