As she watched Sher slow down, she bit her lip to stop from laughing. "What? Afraid of a little cool water?" Elysia teased, paddling around in little triumphant circles. With a grin of her own, she flicked her heavily soaked tail, sending a spray of droplets cascading down behind her. A thick strand of silver stuck to the side of her face as she turned, watching him with her brilliant eyes, waiting for him to join her.
I wonder if I'd be able to dunk him? Her eyes scanned him, the tips of her ears and tail twitching with clearly visible mischievous intent. Probably not. He'd more than likely be able to hold me up in the air. Slowly, a pout formed on her lips. Her ears swiveled back, laying on her head. She did not like the fact that his size could possibly stop her from sneak attacking him, nor did she like the fact that he could more than likely swim much faster than she could.
Her attention snapped back, just as he leapt into the air. Eyes wide, she scrambled to get out the way, barely managing that as he hit the water. The wave from his splash swept her a foot or two away, leaving her laughing breathlessly. His complaint of the water only seemed to worsen her laughter, which probably didn't go over too well with him. Giggling, she paddled back over to him. "Don't be such a baby, Sher. It's not that cold," she chuckled, resuming her triumphant circle paddling around him.
Clumps of blue, black, and silver stuck to her forehead and cheeks, adding splotches of odd colour to her peripheral vision. Smiling, she turned towards him, meeting the wall of water from his playful splash head on. The shock of cold water so suddenly to her face made her shiver and sputter delicately. With wide eyes, she looked at him, amazed by the grin plastered to his mouth. After a moment, she began laughing. It was bright, colourful laughter; the kind of laughter that sounded like silver bells and waterfalls drenched in moonlight. "I take that as a sign of war, Mr. Whitman," she declared between laughs, trying her best--and failing worse than miserably--to glare at him.
Without warning, she sprang. Her tail swung around, dragging a wave of water towards him, intending to send it crashing against him. The, smiling and giggling innocently, she ducked under the water to swim around him. Sneakily, she paddled around behind him and gently pulled his arm, dragging him one way before she darted around the the other side and pulled him the other way. He was going to get her back for it, she knew that much, but that's what play was about. Concealed under the water, she let herself float to the surface, once more behind him. Her hair clumped around her face worse now, sticking to every inch of her neck and cheeks. She was sure she looked quite silly, but she didn't care. Grinning, she pounced on Sher's back, clinging to him as she sang, "I got you!"

"Dunno, looked cold to me!" Sher replied with a wide grin. "Water usually does."
Now the war began, even if it was in fun and splashes, he knew. Well, not yet. First I have to accept her declaration. "Miss Hale," he said with as much dignity as he could muster, "I accept your declaration of war." With that, he ducked under water, though not swift enough to avoid the wall of water thrown at him by her tail. Turned out she had the same idea, though, and he felt his arms pulled this way and that before she darted away.
Two can play at this game! She's got less visibility under water with all that hair--it'll float in front of her like a screen and block her view. I just have to take advantage of that. He surfaced briefly for a breath of air, planning all the while. Elysia did him a favor, then by pouncing on his back. "Aaargh!" he shouted out in mock anguish, taking the opportunity to sink down into the water, pushing her off with his arms until he was at the bottom. He sneakily crawled along it until he was directly under her. Not daring even to grin, which would let out some of his air, he reached up towards her and grabbed her legs, pulling her down. It was as good as a dunk, but from below, a shark-like move.
Do sharks do that, anyway? he wondered in the part of him that wasn't thinking of ways to get his friend wet. Fish weren't part of his department in the first place anyway. He wasn't a fish, and nor was Elysia, so his grab was brief so as not to drown her, and he slipped away along the bed of the lake until he surfaced five feet away from her for a gasp of air.

Elysia could help but laugh as he acknowledged her. He looked so serious, but the remnant traces of his grin said otherwise. She could tell this was turning out to be a really nice time out; a time that she would never forget. Smiling, she brushed her hair out of her face with a swift flick of her paw, keeping her eyes on her sneaky friend.
Though, why she kept staring at him and she was attached to his back like a great leech escaped her. Another giggle rolled from her lips as he cried out. "You know, you're not a very good act--" She squeaked, sputtering as he pushed her off and she crashed back in the water. Her loose hair splayed wildly about her in the water, effectively blinding her as it stuck to her face when she surfaced. Slowly, she lifted her paw, brushing her soaked hair back and wiping the water out of her eyes. Her tail lashed wildly behind her, the only physical sign that she was plotting something. Her eyes scanned the water around and below her, trying to catch a glimpse of him so she could dodge and somehow get him back. Looking directly under herself, however, never crossed her mind. So, the moment his paws circled her ankles, she yelped, drawing in a deep breath as she sank with his pull.
Her hair screened her eyes again, making her shake her head. She caught a glimpse of him darting away, and a smile twitched on her lips. Swiftly, she righted herself, bolting after him. She saw him surface, hear him gasp for air a few moments. Her tail lashed, her ears laying back on her, as she shot up out of the water like a fuzzy, wet, black torpedo. Her hair plastered to her face, which meant she was leaping blind. She grinned, hoping she landed where she intended, which, in fact, was right on him in her own weird attempt of a tackle-dunk.
Of course, she knew she probably wouldn't hurt him, unless he just wasn't looking.

Sher would have cursed himself if he hadn't been having so much fun. Elysia popped out of the water with a burst that startled him (which was itself confusing, since, he realized too late, he should have expected something like that). Her weight suddenly dragged him down. No help for it--you can't fight it, you can only go with it. With a breathless laugh, he ducked back under water.
The lake was one of those eutrophic lakes--highly productive, plenty of algae, green. It was hard to get any sort of visibility down here. As a matter of fact, her hair, he realized, would be a mere nuisance--the real problem was the water itself, which was no friend to him, either. It gave him a sense of exhilaration that came with challenges.
I really didn't want to do this to you, he thought playfully. But he didn't have much choice. With one hand he pulled her underwater by her collar. With the other, he tickled her side mercilessly. Resisting the urge to giggle again, he released her collar to wriggle the fingers of both hands down her side, sweeping his legs up constantly to prevent himself from floating. When he was sure she was distracted, he took her arms and pulled her back up to the surface. I probably shouldn't have tickled her--laughter can cause a lot of air to leek out. But it had been an opportunity too good to pass up.
By this point, all thoughts of the earlier conversation had gone out of his head, and he was far too caught up with the water fight. But even that was starting to go out of his head, skittering around like a winged hockey puck tied to an anchor. He was, unknowingly, leaving himself open for any sort of sneak attack from a devious foe. "Are you alright?" he asked. In the vague way of someone who is only vaguely paying attention to the world around him, he prepared himself in case she had taken a mouthful of water to spit at him, no matter how dirty the water might be.

Laughing, Elysia collided with Sher, sticking to him much like a leech would, and down they went. She dragged in a huge deep breath before her head sunk beneath the waves, allowing a small smile to twitch on her lips. Then she bobbed back up, having strategically detached herself from him. She laughed, looking around under her. He would be coming back up soon to get her, she just knew it.
However, she didn't know he'd do it in such a strange way. She turned her head, looking for any sign of his on coming attack just as his paw gripped her collar. She gasped, dragging in another deep breath before she was pulled under. Then she felt his paw on her side, wriggling on her ribs, one of her extremely ticklish spots. She squirmed, fighting the urge to belt out the laughter building in her chest. Her struggles doubled when his other paw began assaulting her other side, causing her to feebly push at him as she tried to wriggle away.
The second she felt his paws on her arms, pulling her up, she scrambled to grip at him, almost literally climbing up him. Bright, tortured laughter burst from her the second she surfaced. She gasped, inhaling enormous gulps of air, between laughs as she gripped at his shoulders to make sure she didn't drown [which she knew she would if she even attempted swimming by herself right now]. Her small frame shook with tremors from her laughter,
As soon as she calmed down, she looked up at him. Her scarlet eyes shining with tears, a wide grin spreading across her lips. "I'm fine, but that was evil!" She squeaked, lifting a paw to splash at him, but froze. She hadn't realized she was clutched so tightly to him until just then. Her face blazed bright red and she scrambled back, her eyes wide. She'd been literally inches from him. Oh, my.... Quickly, she swam to a shallow area and hid her face, hoping her hadn't caught her sudden severe blush.

Sher was startled by Elysia's clinging, but he hardly noticed his own startlement. Instead, he let his legs beat wildly at the water to keep both of them afloat, his lungs sucking in what little breath they could in between bouts of laughter brought on by her own infectious amusement. He didn't notice how much more tightly he held her now either, how he clung to her small body that shook with laughter.
"Couldn't help it!" he said with a grin. "You left yourself open; I really couldn't resist. It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up." He smiled at her, gazing at her eyes wet with tears of...happiness, right? She had happiness in her eyes, wasn't that right? He started to come back to the world. She was clinging to him tight, as tight as he was holding her. And she was blushing. That deep, rosy pink was spreading underneath her black fur, and it spoke volumes that her voice did not.
I don't think she's attached, or at least not seriously so...she's too...close? for someone who's attached. There was a bright little spot growing inside him that he normally would have put down to selfishness. Hope? Did he have a chance? Do I want the chance?
Yes. I think I do. Slowing the mad beat of his legs so that he would be lowered in the water, Sher swam over to the edge of the lake, into the shallows where Elysia was hiding. "What's wrong?" he croaked. He felt a brief, tiny flash of heat streak across his jaws. Croak?! He straightened his throat and tried again. "Are you okay, Elysia? I wasn't hurting you, was I?" And I don't mean physically!

With wide, startled eyes Elysia stared at him. Her face was burning up with the bright blush still clinging to cheeks. She heard him vaguely as he asked her if she was okay. Her eyes darted away, lowering and focusing on anything else but him. Slowly, she drug in two deep, relaxing breaths, though they did relax her. "I-I'm fine," she choked, glancing at him briefly.
Her heart was pounding against her ribs, making her feel like her entire form was pounding with the speeding rhythm. She'd been literally inches--possibly just centimeters--from him. Her arms had been clutching at him, holding her tightly to him. A flare of heat rushed into her cheeks again as she recalled that he'd been clutching at her just as tightly.
It did feel good, though. Having someone to hold me like me that. Covering her face with her paws, she groaned, trying to push those thoughts back. After a moment, she sighed, dropped her paws, and looked up at him.
"I'm sorry," she began, her scarlet eyes shining with regret and sorrow, "I really didn't mean to cling to you like that. I'm sure you'll get in trouble with your mate or girlfriend when you go home and she finds out." She'd flinched, only slightly, when she'd said those two words: mate or girlfriend. It had been entirely involuntary, and it had surprised her. Though, she didn't move or look away from him now, she did hope he hadn't noticed.
Of course he noticed. He's noticed everything so far, I think. What could possibly have distracted him long for him to miss that? She shifted, the tip of her twitching and lashing tail the only sign of her tumultuous thoughts still raging in her head. It was also the sign she gave that she hoped he would say he didn't have a mate or girlfriend, but she didn't expect him to figure that one out.

The fact that she was blushing wasn't surprising, but somehow it was vaguely comforting, in light of the fact that he, too, was blushing. His hearts were racing, too; part of him could relax, but that was the part of him that looked for the bridge; now the part of him that had to cross it had to do it delicately, carefully, for the bridge was, as always, a flimsy creation. He had the emotional scars to prove it.
He reached out and put the first step on the bridge--he stroked her face soothingly with the backs of his fingers. He allowed a smile to cross his face and moved himself closer to Elysia. Now for the big gaps on the bridge...I have to say it carefully, sound confident, but not so confident that I sound like an arrogant...jerk.
"Good thing I broke up with my girlfriend several months ago," he murmured softly. There. I said it. Now maybe I can proceed...I think I said the right thing...it's the truth, certainly, the absolute and total truth, not a white lie, not a lie by omission...but did I say it the right way? "That is, I'm not attached," he added a little hastily. "I don't have anyone who would get green-eyed if they found out I was having fun with a beautiful young lady."
And, to make sure that there were no loose ends, though he was certain there was none--after all, her words had said it! If there was a loose end, she wouldn't be worrying about it!--he knew he had to ask. "Probably should have asked this earlier, but you don't have some jealous significant other who's going to give me a piece of their mind, do you?" He wasn't so sure about the tone of voice he'd used--it sounded joking, a little...mocking. Oops, no, s**t, bad!!
He could only think of one way to recover from that; he reached out and wrapped his arms around her once more, holding her tight. It felt good, it felt so good to hold her in his arms--and from the way she had acted before, she liked it too.

The second his fingers brushed across her face, she stilled. Her breath caught in her throat, and Elysia was entirely silent. All of her previous thoughts dropped away, not a stitch of fur on her body moved, and those huge scarlet orbs pinned him. His smile startled her. It was genuine, gentle.. Something she'd never seen before. When he moved closer, all she could do was watch. It was as if it was happening to someone else and she was just a spectator. Still, she did not breath. Her lungs wouldn't work, it seemed, and her body would not obey her command to move.
His soft admission enveloped her, wrapping around that small part of her that had secretly hoped he'd say something like that. Her heart stuttered, skipping a beat, as he continued. Beautiful? He called me beautiful...? Another small blush streaked across her cheeks, this one a lighter pink dash compared to her earlier fire engine red mask. Her mind worked through the sudden smog that had taken over, and she regained control of her voice, at least. "I'm sorry to hear that, Sher," she gasped, her tone entirely breathless--she had yet to get her lungs to obey her.
He was so close. She hadn't thought he was this close. He'd probably been inching closer the entire time... Upon his question, which had successfully interrupted her almost-train-of-thought, her breath finally whooshed out in a cynical burst of laughter.
"Me?" She gasped, her voice turning bitter, her eyes blazing, "No, Sher, I don't have anyone that would get jealous. Other than maybe Mallory, but that's because I'm teaching her how to paint. But no, no one wants m--" Her voice fell away as he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer. He held her tight to his chest, and she was stunned. Tears sprang to her eyes, though none spilled over her lashes, and a small, choked sound passed her lips. Burying her face against the soft, soaking fur of chest, she brought her arms up, wrapping them just as tightly around him.

She was hardly breathing, and Sher would have felt guilty about that, except he was having trouble breathing too. He was just too excited. A little voice in the back of his head was telling him he was going too fast, they'd only just met, but Sher pushed it aside. When I asked you to regulate our speed, I meant with the...physical stuff. I'll deal with the emotional stuff.
"It's okay. I've gotten over it a while ago. It...It wasn't as much as it could be," he explained. His hearts ached at that--he wouldn't forget Sheva, not in a hurry, and he knew his family wouldn't either. But it's time I had someone new. Time I had someone to love so that I can relax wherever I go and let myself be free.
He felt right. He felt free, just a little bit; free from the stress, free from the always holding himself tight, free from the loneliness he'd long since cloaked himself with, when she admitted she was free. It was what he had expected, but he had to have confirmation.
He smiled at the sound of her laugh and wiped away her tears as she returned the embrace. "It's okay," he murmured. "It'll be okay..." Has she said she liked you yet?
No, but her actions have said it, and I think mine have as well. He wasn't quite ready to say it out loud--there was so much to do first, she would have to meet Romlee and Pan, and he should probably introduce her to his jealous familiar, Zea, and his father and brother definitely!--but he was certain she knew how he felt. And if she doesn't, that means that people might have lied to her in the past, and that means I will have some people to threaten.

Her own heart clenched as he spoke, wiping away her tears. Elysia may have thought of herself as "socially retarded", but she knew emotions. She knew the tiny catches and different tones related with certain feelings. But this? No. This baffled her. She had no idea what she was feeling. She didn't know why her stomach filled with butterflies and her heart skipped a beat every time her gaze met those darkly golden eyes. Unless...
Oh dear... She blushed, faintly this time. "I hope that you can find as much as you want in a relationship," she whispered. And I want you to try with me. She lifted her eyes, meeting his gaze fully, as she tried to convey that thought through her eyes. She was too chicken to say something like that out loud.
Plus, she didn't think he felt the same. He was just being friendly. He'd come to check on her because of the way she'd scrambled off, that's all. That, and she probably didn't hold a candle to his last girlfriend. Still, she had to admit how she felt or seeing him after this would be very awkward for her.
Slowly, gently, she pulled away from him. Her paws slipped down his shoulders and arms until she found his paws, holding them gently between hers. Her eyes fell from his, her teeth grasping at her bottom lip, as she thought of exactly how to put what she wanted to say. "Sher," she began, still not looking directly at him, "I know you might run away after this, but... You're..." She stopped, huffing softly at herself and her lack of courage. Delicately, she cleared her throat, swallowing down any and all fear of saying what she had to say. "Having your company today has been wonderful. So wonderful. You've made me laugh more than I thought I could and feel something I never thought I would," her voice broke as tears choked her, stopping her again. She hoped he wouldn't turn tail and run like she expected him to.
After a moment, she took a deep breath and tried again, "I feel something for you, Sherman. I have no idea what it is yet, but I hope I can find out what it could be." Pausing to let that sink in, she forced a shaky smile, her eyes glittering with the reflected shimmer of the shallow water's surface and pent up tears. "I want to be your jealous someone back at home, if you'll have me," she whispered, her voice watery and slightly strangled.
Then came the ugly part. Her tears spilled over of their own accord, adding salt streaks down her already wet cheeks. Her heart pounded like a rabbit's running from a wolf, but she didn't notice. Her entire focus was centered on the male sitting in front of her as she waited for his reaction. Her fingers stroked the back of his paws in a rhythm that mimicked the ebb and flow of ocean waves, mostly for her sake rather than his. She kept expecting him to disappear, for this all to disappear, and to wake up heartbroken because it was all a dream.

Sher had to resist the temptation to hold her tighter as she pulled away, to clutch her like she'd disappear if he could no longer feel her delicate body against his ribs. He wanted her to be sitting next to him, held tight so nothing in the universe could drag her away. But he couldn't do that; he had to respect her. If she wanted to pull away, she had every right to do that, even if it sent him into an uncomfortable panic.
Even if she wants a relationship, she wouldn't want it with me. She'll want it with some nice, sweet guy or girl who isn't a cynical hardass like me. The half of him that instinctively cringed at doing harm in the medical profession was saying that; all he had to do was let the rational half of him take hold.
Stop that! You don't know that! Besides, we hardly ever act like a cynical hardass among the people we love most! Well, except for Dad and Ahiga, but that's because Dad's even worse than we are, and Ahiga doesn't care, but...The point is, I have to be rational. I have to hear her out before I jump to any conclusions. He tried not to let this inner turmoil and last-minute worrying show and just held her hands firmly, running the tips of his fingers along her palms soothingly. He kept himself calm and watched her, his bottom jaws moving slightly in and out.
He gave her hands a squeeze as his hearts leapt. He felt a bit guilty about that, but part of him felt like he held all the cards, like he knew the answers that she didn't have the confidence to know. "Your company's been the most wonderful thing of the past six months," he murmured. "I honestly haven't had this much fun and enjoyment, and I wouldn't dream of running away from you, Elysia." He shifted slightly to be sitting closer to her, eager to comfort her but realizing he couldn't shift his hands, not now.
And then there was the moment of truth. She'd opened up her heart and spilled it to him to see the golden contents; now it was his turn, and he found himself starting to choke as he mentally lined up the words he had to say. He could only hope that she didn't take them wrongly or that they didn't hurt her. "Elysia..." he began. "I feel something for you, too...it's just...I've had a long history of, of rushing in and not taking it at the right pace. I want to try it with you. Well, not, not, well..." he added quickly. "But I want to try...I want to try a relationship with you. If you'll have me. Because it would make me happy if I could have you. Even for a little while." He released one of her hands and gently lifted her chin, wiping away her tears and giving her a smile, realizing as he did so that he, too, was tearing up. "It's okay," he murmured softly.

Elysia swore her heart stopped as he spoke, though she knew very well it didn't because that was what was causing the steady pound against her ribs. His words swirled around her, taking a moment to sink in through the haze around her mind. The second they did, her eyes widened. He'd said she wanted to try a relationship with her. He'd said it!
A small smile pulled at her lips as she scooted closer to him, leaning her cheek against his paw to gently nuzzle his palm. "Don't you go crying on me, now. I don't think I could stop myself from bawling if you do," she laughed softly. Lifting a paw, she brushed her fingers over his cheeks, wiping away any tears that had spilled over.
Now you need to tell him you've never been in a relationship before. Inwardly, she winced at that thought. She wondered, briefly, what he'd think of her because of that. Maybe he wouldn't think anything of it. Maybe he would. She wouldn't know until she said something. A small blush coloured her cheeks as she once more looked away from him.
"I have something else I need to tell you, Sher..." She began, curling and uncurling her tail around herself. "I... uhm... I-I...." She paused, drug in a deep breath, and tried again. "I haven't had any experience with relationships... Well, I thought a boy was cute when I was kit, but that probably doesn't count. So... slow is good. Slow is perfect, actually." It'll give me time to learn... and I'm sure I have a lot to learn.
Slowly, she wriggled her way back against his chest. That feeling of safety and rightness warmed her again. A soft sigh escaped her lungs, her previous smile growing slowly wider. "I know it'll be okay. I can feel it," she whispered, clutching at him with a hopeful heart.

Sher returned the nuzzle, unable to close his eyes or look away from hers. His hearts beat a steady tattoo against his ribs, strong, powerful. Just like the feeling he felt for her; and it would only get stronger, he knew. "I'll stop you from crying," he murmured back. His arms felt their rest around her once more, pulling her even closer, right to where she belonged against his body.
He thought everything was going well--why shouldn't he think that?--when she told him she had something to say. He could have sworn his hearts stopped and held their breaths. What now? What's happening? Was my joy too short-lived? Please don't let this be anything bad! Please don't let this ruin something that could be so good for both of us! He curled his tail around her and listened to what she had to say.
A burst of laughter erupted from him and he gave her a squeeze. "I haven't been in too many relationships myself!" he chuckled as a river of relief flooded through him. "It's nothing big," he added in a more gentle voice. "We can take it as slow as you like. I think we'll both have a lot to learn." With that, he nuzzled her face and rubbed her back. "I know it will be," he murmured. He returned the smile and let his eyes close halfway in bliss.

As he pulled her closer, her smile widened. He'd accepted her like she'd thought he wouldn't, which had been a welcome surprise. Closing her eyes, she wrapped her tail around his and snuggled closer to side. It amazed her at how comfortable she was with him, and how well her smaller frame fit against his. "I'm sure you could," she chuckled, opening her eyes to look up at him again. She absolutely could not believe that he'd said yes.
His laughter startled her, making her jump slightly. Wide eyes stared up at him curiously as he spoke, those eyes getting wider as he repeated her previous thoughts back to her. It's like he read my mind. She smiled, returning the gentle nuzzle, as a small purr bubbled up, elicited from her happiness in the moment.
Water lapped at her legs, reminding her that they were huddled together in a shallow pool at the edge of the lake. A small giggle passed her lips and she shook her head. "Think we should remove ourselves from the water before our tail turn into raisins?" She joked, smiling brightly up at him. "Or would you rather continue to shrivel up while enjoying each other's company?" She hoped he'd vote for the latter. Or the other. Or both.
With another small giggle, she cuddled back against him. Reveling in how she felt wrapped in his arms, she closed her eyes, letting her head rest against his chest. The steady beat of his heart sounded doubled in her ears. It was almost as if she were hearing two of them. Well, he is an alien. I'll have to remember to ask him about it later. One heart or two, the steady, strong beating lulled her, comforted her, like nothing else seemed to.
