Seeing the children at the other Walker's feet, William shouted out to them: "Scatter, you little cockroaches!" All while firing a round or two from his Nordenfelt. Certainly, the Gypsy woman had intended for William to avoid the man he was now approaching, but William chose to believe all of what she said was bullocks. Nothing would stop him in his quest to topple an empire, least of all a smoke and curry-smelling Gypsy. "You! What's your name, sir?" he called to the dark-haired man lounging lazily at the top of the machine.

"Rude ta th' children and less rude ta strangers. What a combination..." Raphael watched the children below scream and run scared to the front of the abbey, peering around from the sides of the large doorway. He sighed in disappointment and nodded at the Abbot, coming to investigate. "Nothin'll happen to the lads and lasses, Abbot. Just a visitor." The older man glanced at both of the Walker machines before herding the young ones into the building, telling them softly it was time for lessons. Raphael looked over to where the newcomer was, glaring. "Ah would think it would be more polite if ye stated your name first, huh?" He shrugged carelessly. "But oh well. Raphael Xander, at yer service, laddie." He stood up in his seat, giving a polite, if not a little mocking, bow before sitting back down again.

William started excitedly in his controller's chair. "Aha! I found you! Your skills as a Walker Machine driver are the stuff of legends, my good man. I come before you, to humbly request that you share your wisdom with me! I am William Baxter Cruxely II, son of Sir William Baxter Cruxely, son of Lafayette Mordecai Cruxely!" he shouted. William lowered the heavy gun, and walked a little closer to Raphael's machine. He climbed out to stand on its shoulder, his premature gray locks catching the light breeze. The pocketwatch buzzed pleasantly as he wound it. "A wise Gypsy woman prophesied that I am to change the order of the Empire, and you are destined to stand by my side!" he lied boldly. "If you will but train me to fight with these great machines, I will grant you a permanent place of power in my new order! What say you?"

Raphael cocked his head curiously to the side as he studied the fidgety William. "Ah said yer name, not yer sires as well." He chuckled and reached a hand up to touch the necklace he wore absently. "But Ah'm glad that ye know who yer talkin' tae." The glass of his spectacles glinted in the sunlight as the corners of his mouth came up into a wide smile, he seemed to be always smiling. "A Gypsy woman told ye? Ah believe ye there. Aye, Ah know who yer talkin' about, and what the lass said tae ye was probably th' truth." A blatant lie. He knew the woman William was most likely referring to. Not that they were friends, but he did a lot of traveling. She'd had advised against meeting him, if he thought correctly. But things like this were interesting. "Very well, Ah'll train ye. Ye handle that thing like a mule pullin' an ox cart anyways."

"You have my gratitude, sir!" William bowed sincerely and deeply, hiding the wicked smile that crossed his face. "What would you have me do first, instructor?" he inquired as he rose, glancing at the golden watch and snapping it shut. He cast a wary eye across the way to the Royal Guardsmen, practicing maneuvers nearby. Somewhere in the back of his mind, where mysticism and childish fear still hid from his empirical and logical demeanor, the Gypsy woman was staring at him with that evil eye. He shuddered and told himself that there was no way she could see him. The image of the woman would not leave him, however. Her face, beautiful and terrible, was burned into his mind, it seemed. He began to make his way back across the barrel of the Nordenfelt on which he had walked. Near the arm joint, his composure failed him, and he slipped. "Ah, shite!" he called, falling seven meters to the hard ground below. After a moment's groaning and cursing, he stood and dusted himself off. "No, no! Don't worry, this happens to me a lot...."

Raphael laughed out loud at the sight of William's attempt of calmness, happy tears coming to his eyes. "Ah ha ha ha! Oh, that's good." He took a deep breath, still chuckling, and wiping the bits of moisture away. This was going to be an entertaining process. "Ah'm guessing yer still shaken up from her, eh? No doubt thare, that effect'll last ye a good while." He shook his head in amusement and climbed up easily on the Fatum's shoulder, then gauged the distance between the two Walker machines. " 'Right, seems yer reaction timing is a wee off. Not to mention yer balance. Any decent piloter of one o' these machines should have atleast one o' those things." With a step and a short leap, he landed softly on the other Walker's Nordenfelt barrel, positioning his feet so he wouldn't slip. "But, that may just be me."

"Give me a little credit! I built this machine from scraps and a stolen prototype reactor. I'm afraid I have not the means to replace or upgrade it at this time." William swatted a few more clouds of dust from his ragged clothing, and began to climb back up to the controller's chair. He made it to the top without incident, this time. He tapped his fingers nervously, and absentmindedly popped open the watch again, held it up without looking at it, and closed it again to stow it in one of his numerous pockets. "Right, then. Any suggestions? I'm certainly not going to overtake any empires at this rate."

"Scraps? Wish Ah had that idea, I bribed someone for Fatum over there." Raphael stuck his arms out and walked along the barrel, balancing himself. Then he crouched down on his heels and took a pebble out of a pocket, tossing it up and down lightly. "Alright. First lesson, reactions an' timing." He suddenly shot the pebble at William, then stone bouncing off the chair behind him by his neck. "If yer goin' tae pilot this Walker properly, ye need to be able tae react properly and quickly. Take those controls, for instance." He nodded his head at the control panel area. "How're ya goin' tae move yer machine fast enough to fight yer enemy, if yer slow to find the right thing tae attack with?"

((I think I missed out on something or other. Is the Nordenfelt attached to William's walker, or what? I would think it is, I looked up what it looked like and it was pretty sizey.))

((It's mounted at the base of the right elbow, in place of the arm. I suppose it would help if I had clarified that from the beginning. sweatdrop I'll upload a pic, if I ever draw one that satisfies my mental image.))
"Well, right now I have only this gun I was able to swipe from a decommissioned naval vessel...." William said apologetically. He then spent the next few hours running drills at Xander's command, trying his best to time his reactions along with the movements of his walker. It was certainly tough work, and he lost his footing quite a few times, nearly leveling his gun at Xander in rage more than once as the dark-haired Scot laughed at his progress. Luckily, William kept his temper in check. He guessed that Raphael could probably best him handily if provoked, and thought it wise to keep on the seemingly lazy man's good side. The names of the men that the Gypsy had shown him still played in his head. He tried desperately to block them out, but the effort simply caused the images and sounds to elicit William's childish side he worked so hard to contain.
It's not fair! he whined silently. Why is this world any different than the others? Why can't I be a hero here, too?! He felt a scowl crawl across his face as he practiced control of the Walker Machine. He also remembered one of the Gypsy's parting phrases.
Your motives are entirely selfish, and you will fail because of it! He furrowed his brow as he digested this thought. Are they? Since the advent of their steam reactor, the Empire's been in total control. I only want to liberate England! Right? He directed his machine to hold up a hand to Fatum as it advanced.
"No more. I'm done for today," he panted. "If you'll stay here with the Walker Machine's, I'll go and fetch us some victuals from town.Thank you, Raphael." As he stalked off to the closest Inn for some food, he continued to question his own motives.

Miles away, the very Gypsy who haunted William smiled, and reclined in her chair, the glow of her blue "evil eye" subsiding. She adjusted her red headband to cover the eye, since it was no longer in use for the moment. She flicked her wrists noisily, her many bangles clashing together, and lifted her feet, now clad with gladiator-style sandals, to rest them on an authentically Turkish-style ottoman stool.
"He is learning. He may just experience a change of heart. But just in case he doesn't, can I count on you to take care of this little problem, Mr. Underwood?"
Henry Ezekiel Underwood grinned his best grin, and took the toothpick from his mouth. "Cawl me Zeke. Miss Aishe, y'all kin count own me."

Leon arrived back at the base and after the action of court-martialing the disregardful Guards he went to seek audience with Lt. Hartwell. He was a toughly one that Lt. Hartwell for being in a few battles that proved to be ones that decided the fate of the empire and came out smiling and holding the enemy Gundam head in her Gundam hand. Leon came into his office and asked permission to speak to the Lieutenant. He granted it and Leon said "Sir, there was a disturbance in town today and I was sent to deal with it and it was a simple matter but this guy that was causing the disturbance gave out your rank and last name to me." Hartwell now alarmed stood up from his chair and said "What was his name?" Leon tried to think about it but remembered he did not give out a name he said to him "Well he did not give out a name just a letter he asked me to tell you that X gives his regards and he had black spiky hair and spectacles." Knowing who Leon was talking about he sat back down and said to Leon"Good job officer for giving me this information, you are dismissed." With the notion of the Lieutenant dismissing him Leon went back to his Gundam and continued on maintenance and reloading the chest cannon.

((Wait...Hartwell's a woman now? Lawl, Southern accents. I actually don't have one myself, in RL.))

Raphael waved a hand at William's back, then reclined back up against the abbey's stone walls. The man was a fairly good listener, he thought to himself, stuffing his hands into his pants pockets. Besides the obvious slight temper problems and consistency of failure before getting things right, he proved to be an adequate student. Teaching him was like learning how to fly a kite. It wouldn't take too long to train him. Then his thoughts wandered over to his own current goal, with the whole situation he found himself in. The secrecy, the convincing, the final actual approval. It hadn't taken much time for him to get the confirmation he needed and head out. Everything--
He cut himself off when he heard a voice enter into his head. Enough. You already look suspicious to begin with. Do not draw unneccessary or unwanted attention to yourself. Raphael turned his head to glance sidelong over his spectacles at the Fatum, standing silently and intimidating. Then he fidgeted with his necklace, pressing it against his mouth and muttering something under his breath. "Don't worry. I'm not going to mess up."
He jerked out of his thoughts when a red ball rolled and bumped into his foot. A little girl, about 6 or 7, came rushing over. He bent and picked her up in his arms. "Ach, Kate, yer always losin' that thing." He smiled when her face lit up. "Ye should keep track of that ball. Or else someone'll pick ye up, like this!" He set her on his shoulders, giving her a piggy back ride around his Walker with her giggling happily.

((I guessed Troy missed where you said Hartwell was a "he." lol I have a Southen accent, but it's not as bad as Zeke's.)) "Alright, William. We've found ourselves a teacher. This may just work!" William said aloud. All I need now is to garner a little more support.... Tossing around a name like Xander's may just make that happen. But what next? Life on the streets of Gateshead, England had taught him a great many things. Stealth was an ever-important skill to those who had not the financial means to feed themselves. Once he reached the inn in Essex, his vagabond's eyes began to dart around the premises, watching and learning. He noted where the kitchen was, by observing where the bussers emerged from, when carry their refuse to the filthy alleyway. He crept silently through the back door, and waited for the last busser to leave the kitchen. William quickly grabbed a spare smock, and threw it on before walking to the cupboard.
Hearing noise behind him, the cook turned and spoke in a thick Irish accent: "An' what're ye dewin' back thar, m'boy?" William froze, and put his devious mind to work. He responded with a faked Cockney dialect.
"There's a couple blokes out front, wanner me to see i' we had innay treacle tart left." The Irishman smiled warmly.
"Well, you'll find little of it in'ere. Hol' yer place, I'll fetch it far ya's." He waddled off into another room, where the baker's racks were lined up. William wisely assumed to take as little time as possible, for fear of discovery, and stuffed his knapsack with all sorts of goods from around the kitchen. He tore the smock off deftly, and hung it back in its place, just before darting off into the street. The sun had set during his time in the inn, so William didn't have to expend quite so much effort in hiding himself. He soon slinked away into the dark.

Zeke wandered the streets of Essex, where Aishe had told him William would be. Since the dark was quickly falling, he decided to find board before continuing his search. As he passed a comely inn, he bumped hard into a thin young man carrying a sack. "'Scuse me, son," he muttered as the kid slipped right by. Just as the boy faded from sight, he felt a slight stinging in his hand. He held it up to find his scar giving off a faint blue glow. "Aw, hale. That's him, ain't it?" Zeke stuffed the scarred hand in his pocket, and walked into the inn. He reasoned that William wouldn't get far in one night.

((Lol, yeah. Heeey, you adopted my use of accents! =D))

"Now, get yerself back inside. Th' Abbot'll be lookin' fer ye." Raphael said, setting the little Kate back on the ground. She giggled again, picked up the red ball, and dashed back inside the Abbey, the Abbot in question coming out to check for any children left outside. Raphael went over to him, knowing the man from when he was just a bit younger. "Ah, Father. Pleasure to meet ye agin." The Abbot nodded politely at him, and they both glanced up towards where the sky was beginning to show bright pinpoints of stars. "Will this evil ever be gone?" He heard the man ask, and he shrugged carelessly. "Ah dinnae know. What'll ye think'll happen if it does go?" The Abbot gave a heavy sigh and went back into the Abbey. "I don't know. But, with these new machines everywhere, only God can help us." He closed the wooden doors and Raphael stood out there still in the cooling air. "God, huh? That's one way to put it, eh Fatum?"

((It adds depth to the characters, no? mrgreen ))
"What evil is that, precisely?" William asked the cleric as he approached the abbey. "Evening, Xander, man! I come bearing supplies!" William turned the sack up, and and allowed its contents to make a small pile. He knelt down, and sifted through, grabbing a few wrapped pastries and an apple.
