End of the world = the end of our time. Not the time currently passing, but the time of empires.. todays empires at any rate. If the prophets wanted to claim the end of existence, they would have. I believe the only party guilty of saying such nonsense would be of the religious persuasion.. and we all know how much faith we can put in that.

Still won't happen. The same s**t has been assumed in 1999, 2006 and now 2012. People can't see into the future. Those who can need computers. Something the Mayan's didn't have.
1999 wasn't predicted thousands of years before. That was probably a ridiculous rumor that caught major wind and spread like wild fire. The Mayans, by my current knowledge have predicted many things that were near accurate. They predicted their own downfall, I believe they predicted the huge Tsunami(but I think they were off by a few months or something.. I could be wrong)that happened not too long ago, and I'm sure a few other things have happened that have been linked, either directly or indirectly to the Mayans credit.

They didn't use a system that used the scientific method that could predict the end of the world. That $500.00 bet is still open if you want to take it.
What they used was a star system. I believe the Mayan calendar's year is three of our years, or something to that effect. Nostradamus didn't use any scientific methods when making his predictions, of which one could argue against the more popular of his "prophecies" as inevitable consequence. That being the Twin Towers tragedy. The Mayans didn't use a scientific method when predicting their own downfall, which, again, can be argued using the "all empires must end at some point" debate. I believe that star system they used is entitled Astronomy, which is the
science of reading/studying the stars, planets, etc.

Dinosaurs have never been talked about by the Mayans.
Your point? Many civilizations haven't spoken of Dinosaurs in their history. Or perhaps they did under different terms? We only do because we have the interest and ability to pursue such answers/studies. The Bible doesn't mention them either, nor does Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Despite the fact that there is no proof of it going to happen.
Or no proof suggesting that it won't happen.
Regardless the end of the world is merely a personal deduction based around opinions and history. Sure, history may repeat itself just as it may not.
Let's look at pollution: Before I start on with this, please correct me if I'm wrong as I'm using my own assumed knowledge when crafting this. Pollution is nothing more than Carbon being expelled into the air/atmosphere correct? Well, in all the history of the Industrial age we've been spewing forth this so called Carbon. But... so have Volcanoes. For countless centuries no less. In all the years we've been producing "harmful" emissions from our industry, Volcanoes have left a dent that we'll never catch up to. So that leads to the next segment: Global Warming. Sure, it's not good, for humans or plantlife. But what was the Ice Age but the exact opposite? It's a cycle. The Planet recycles itself.
This may in fact be the answer to the end of the world. Not the end of time, because, well, let's face it, time is endless. It'll still pass when we're gone. It's not the end of existence. It's the end of THIS DAY AND AGE. The Earth will still be here, perhaps humanity will or not, and the Natural world will continue. Maybe what happened to the Mayans will happen to us? We don't know just as we don't not know.
Of course, the question of the world ending is impossible to answer anyways. Maybe the world will vanish? Maybe nothing will happen? Who knows. We should focus on today, not 2012.
Apologies for any offense taken. I'm not trying to be pretentious or "all knowing." Just hopefully adding more subject to this discussion.
