“Don’t be sorry, it’s not your fault”, she said softly to the crying girl. It was easy feeling her pain, and you didn’t need even a lot of empathy for that, but that didn’t help her in any way knowing what she was supposed to do to comfort her. She saw Azzo leaving, and waved her hand at him. “Alright. See you, Azzo.”
Alessa walked a bit closer to Yvette now that he had left… but she was still too shy for actual physical contact (even though it was Yvette that initiated the move and held her hand the first time they met). Perhaps she could find a convenient excuse to leave that room heavy with emotions, but she felt a hint of guilt at the mere idea.

"I... see." What had she been expecting, really? Yvette to be receiving guests with anything other than a tear-stained face and a sober demeanor? The way the nurses talked had made it sound almost like a party, but Tara knew better. Still, for it to be this bad made her feel worse for coming.
That was silly, she told herself sternly. Visiting was the only thing she could do. Giving energy to the sick and injured, and supporting those close to them... that was the role Tara had assumed, and she was going to play it well.
She carefully set one of the plants on a ledge by the door and brought the other one over to Yvette. "It's like they say, Yvette," she said, trying to keep her voice cheerful, "you have nothing to be sorry for! You haven't done anything wrong. I know that doesn't make things better, but you need to know that none of this is your fault." She paused, wanting to make sure it sank in. "None of it."

Topher set the basket by his feet, hands nervously fidgeting until he shoved them in his pockets. He still knew. He knew why she was crying. He knew why the man was in the hospital and he was just supposed to walk up to her and say how sorry he was for her misfortune? It just felt so cheap. He should have comforted her while it was all happening. Not when it was all over. If he had just gotten there a few minutes early, none of this would have even happened...
He swallowed the knot that had built up in his throat. "Don't be sorry. Please..." His words were quick and short. He wanted to add something about how sorry he was and how she shouldn't have even let him in the room but he didn't. Thankfully, something in the back of his brain stopped him again. He was barely aware of the Azzo leaving, only glancing up at the trailing of their conversation.
As Tara spoke, he could do anything but feel his hands tremble inside his pockets. Of course it wasn't her fault. "She's right you know. It will never be your fault Yvette. Don't think that..."

It didn't take much to get the girl to break down. All it took was the blonde to come forward, to wrap little Yvette up in her arms, and pet her like some sort of scared animal. Almost instantaneously, Yvette was sobbing against Melody's shoulder, burying her miserably tear-streaked into her friend's clothing. Later on, the dark-haired girl would fret over the fact she didn't say goodbye to Azzo, but for now, she completely missed his departure. She only half heard anything everyone said, but the general consensus seemed to be that she shouldn't be apologizing.
If she was at least half-herself at that moment, she might have apologized for apologizing in the first place. Yet, for now, all she could feel was this bittersweet sensation of being comforted. Their words meant a lot, but they also meant nothing to her. She felt loved, but she felt so alone. Even the optimistic cheery tone that Tara had taken almost felt like it meant nothing.
The emotional rollercoaster had its ups and downs, and after sobbing for a while, her tears began to dry up, signaling the rollercoaster was slowing down. Lethargically, the girl rolled her head to look at the others in the room, while still keeping her head resting upon Melody's shoulder. She remained looking in an almost dazed fashion, her face looking a complete mess, yet something seemed to snap her out of that near-trance.
"hic!"
The girl's nose crinkled slightly in distaste. Apparently Yvette had cried herself into a case of the hiccups.

Yvette, even when crying and feeling sorrow, pity and other such emotions, was still adorably cute in her own little way. And crying herself into hiccups had not helped her case at all. Something the blonde would likely tease her for later, once she was sure her shy friend wouldn't burst into another set of tears.
But all the while, even when fighting good natured giggles at Yvette's misfortune for hiccups, she never stopped smoothing her hair. Not once had she stopped even when the tears had stopped and she wondered how much it helped for her to be doing this. And how much more it would help if the others tried to offer similar comfort.
Group hugs were awesome. Totally.

Tara felt her heart sink into her shoes. She really wasn't helping. She had failed before, and she was failing now. She glanced at Topher and just knew he was feeling the same way. Even though they hadn't set the youma on Yvette and her dad, it might as well have been their fault.
Her eyes started to water. Before she could start crying, she bit her lip and moved closer. "Everything's going to be okay," she said, her voice wavering but still trying to sound optimistic. Finding a bit of room next to Melody, Tara stretched her arms out, hugging both girls. Yvette needed all the support she could get... and at that particular moment, so did Tara herself.

There was one thing Alessa did well, and it was following the leader. She found the courage to give a timid but gentle contribution to the group hug. “Yes, it’s gonna be okay. Your friends are here, we’re here.” She didn’t perceive Topher’s or Tara’s guilt, because she wouldn’t have the slightest idea anyway why would the girl otherwise put the blame on herself. The brunette was focused on Yvette’s distress, and at that moment, she was mostly blind to the distress felt by anyone else in the room.
All of a sudden, something buzzed in the pocket of Alessa’s jeans. When the group hug eventually disintegrated, she checked it. There was a new text message from her mother: “everythin ok? can u buy batteries when u come home pls?” Crap, it was this late already?! Her parents hadn’t been aware there was a reason for her to be late, and to be fair, they had a reason to worry, what with the attacks she’d been victim of. She looked up, apologetic, putting the cell phone back in her pocket. “I’m sorry, I gotta go. My parents are starting to worry. If you need something, you know where to find me, alright?” Break. “I’m so stupid, I never gave you my phone number! Here it is. Call me if you need something.” As she spoke with a self-deprecating tone, she ripped off the corner of some paper in her bag to write it hastily, using her other hand as a support, before handing it to Weaver’s daughter. “Take care. You can do it, we’re here if you need it.” With these last words, Alessa hurried outside. The faster she went back home, the less her parents would lecture her.

Topher watched as Alessa left, offering her a quick wave as she dashed out the door. It didn't quite change the situation for him though. A group hug? With a bunch of girls? To any other boy, this would have seemed like a prime opportunity but he was still unsure of everything. His entire body trembled like there had been a sudden chill in the room. Topher was the odd one out. It wasn't that he didn't like hug but it still felt awkward. If there was one thing he didn't like, it was group hugs. Especially group hugs that contained girls that were reduced to hiccups from crying too much.
Tears had settled in the corners of his eyes and deep, shaky breaths were the only thing holding them back. Finally, his eyes wandered around a room, looking for anything else he could use to get closer besides shuffling towards them like a fish out of water.
A chair! Perfect!
He quickly grabbed the wooden frame, dragging the chair along the ground until he was close enough to be comforting but far enough away that he didn't have to be the awkward boy in the hug. "Don't worry Yvette..." His voice was still shaking but he had enough control to keep it soft and even. "When he wakes up, you'll be able to talk to him and it'll make you feel much better."

Perhaps it was the fact that the focus was no longer on him, or perhaps it was just a coincidence, but a rather gruff, yet groggy tone managed to mutter something out.
"I gotta go to the bathroom..."
Yvette had been as content as she could be with nuzzling up against her friends in the group hug while letting out tiny little hiccups. Nobody really enjoyed having the hiccups, but she was pleasantly surprised at how nice everyone was being. Though, in her mind, she didn't deserve any of this. A tiny smile crept to her lips before she had heard her Daddy's voice. The absolute second the word "I" escaped from his mouth, she jerked up rather suddenly, probably accidentally bumping someone slightly, and immediately went back to the exact same position she had been in before anyone had arrived.
"D-daddy...?" A tiny hiccup escaped her lips after that as her tiny hands tightened over his much larger hand. Her lips curled into a tiny, trembling smile, and for a moment, she forgot completely about everyone present.
The man's fingers twitched under hers and he offered a rather tired smile. "What's the matter, pumpkin?" The bearded man sounded absolutely harmless and completely doped up on pain killers. He obviously hadn't noticed the small crowd, or the fact there was even a boy in the room. Oh, only God knew what would happen if he had managed to notice the boy in the room.
The girl didn't look away from her Daddy, but her voice was able to do the explaining for everyone in the room. "Uh... um... -hic- ... th-thank you everyone... um... -hic-... I d-don't w-want t-to be rude... b-but -hic-... I w-was wondering... if you could leave us alone f-for now?"
Apparently the girl wanted to spare them on the waterworks that she was inevitably going to be pouring out.

Tara nodded slightly as one of the girls left, keeping her arms around the others. As soon as Yvette moved, however, she jerked back to avoid hitting anyone. "Wha- ohhhhhh."
Relief washed over her, quickly paired with frustration. Why was he awake so soon, while Laney was still asleep? Tara felt ridiculous and mean-spirited for even thinking such a thing, but she couldn't help feeling a bit jealous. Yvette's father would be home soon. And Tara would still be coming to the hospital for who knew how long?
"I'm so glad," she murmured, squeezing Yvette's shoulder lightly. "We'll leave you two be. But call me if you need anything, okay?"
Glancing briefly at the man in the bed, she nodded and slipped out the door, touching the plant she'd left gently on her way out. One visit down, one to go.

Melody had been glad to see the others move to help comfort Yvette. As only one person she could really only do so much. Comfort was often best in numbers.
The blonde watched as one of the girls left, only vaguely aware of it, as she had the greater focus of her attention on their soft spoken friend. And then, as if by some miracle, there was a gruff voice and Melody found herself with no choice but to look. There was so much relief at seeing him awake, even if he wasn't very coherent.
Then, with a bright smile, she placed a gentle kiss to Yvette's head and moved to gather up her bag. But not before pausing to root around in her back for pen and paper to jot something down. The paper was immediately handed over to the stuttering girl.
"Give me a call when things settle down, kay?"
Then, with another kiss to the top of her head and a wink, Melody vanished from the room to go search out Ignacio's mother.

His head snapped up at the man's voice. He had to get out of there without being seen of things could get ugly. Topher easily remembered that her father didn't like boys and he was most certainly one of those. Yvette probably realized this too. Hopefully she wouldn't mind if he slipped out without being noticed. Besides, everyone else had left and she was asking after all.
Topher tried his best to smile a bit as he rose from the chair. "If you need to talk Yvette, you know where aIl live and you know my number. Just give me a call or a knock. I promise I won't be busy kay?" After this, all he had to do was walk out. Still, the overwhelming need to apologize to the man in the bed was making the steps towards the door rather hard. It took everything in him to actually leave without saying another word to the pair.

The girl's head bobbed up and down for a nod as each friend drifted out of the hospital room. She didn't turn to look as they left. She didn't say a word (though those hiccups still continued to liven up the air). All off her attention was on her Daddy.
"Baby... I need to go to the bathroom..."
The girl didn't pay attention to her Daddy's words. The moment the last of her friends had left, she got up and practically threw herself at her Daddy, hugging onto him tightly, weeping against his chest.
Yvette couldn't be any happier. Daddy woke up. Naively, she figured that all of her problems were over. The girl was far from correct.
Her problems were only just starting.
