As much as I loved the movie, as others have said, I was a little saddened that they didn't stick closer to the book. The main characters' relationship with Nobu-san was one of the most meaningful aspects of the novel to me, and I was saddened that they minimized that in the film. I know it might have been a personal thing, but I was stunned, too, that they portrayed the geisha as being all-out rude to one another in front of the guests. While in the book, they were certainly (especially Hatsumomo) catty to one another occasionally, it seemed very out of character for them to be doing that.
xXTeh_SabbyXx, I very much recommend "Geisha, a Life". It's a wonderful book, and I especially liked that it was written by someone who'd actually been a geisha. (And I particularly loved the discussion of the Inoue (sp?) school of dance.)

They left out lots of thing from the movie (what happened to the general?) but I still think it was pretty well done.

Even though this pretty much mirrors what a lot of people said, I think that the movie was good but I'm also a bit dissappointed that they left a lot of things out, etc. However they still managed to show at least a considerable amount of the book visually, and I guess that's still good. Also if a film is based on a book, they probably wouldn't do it exactly the same because it's too long, and it gives people less incentive to buy the book.... so with that in mind, I thought it was good and it's now one of my favourite films 3nodding also... kairisesshy i know!!! i just dont understand the stupidity! it doesnt make sense! gonk oh well, im buying a complete furisode set to where to an Anime convention, where im sure i will be the farthest thing from a whore to the people. I also plan on wearing it to my grad. party and if ANYONE says ANYTHING they can just leave Go you! I'd also love to know where you're getting you're furisode set from. As in set, do you mean everything including obi and all the little extras? I've looked it up and there's so many extra parts that you don't see gonk I've been thinking about holding a 'geisha evening' for a friend's birthday because he loves japanese culture...

To me, the movie wasn't as interesting as the book, but it was SO visually stimulating its not even funny.

femmelexalterego I enjoyed the movie a lot, however pieces were missing and added which I don't think I liked. 1.) She's a monkey not a rooster. 2.) Nobu needed a bigger part, and gave her the place to go not the Chairman. 3.) (This is what really bugged me.) The American that the buisness was doing buisness with, wasn't supposed to be an American, it was a Japanese man. He was interested in becoming Sayuri's danna. 4.) The oykia never burned down. Hamosota cut her foot and bleed everywhere when she was drunk one night. All in all, I thought it was appealing visually and emotionally. The Chinese actresses did a good job, even though once in a while they looked silly in kimono. I very much enjoyed the last scene..But I wish they would have let her keep the hankerchief. i liked the movie to, but i do wish nobu got a bigger part.... i don't get why sayuri doesn't like nobu... after all he has done for her... o well, the movie was great though....

The movie was good, you just had to pretend you hadn't read the book. Or what Japanese dancing is really like.. But good none the less.
I have to admit Nobu san played a large part in Sayuri's life, but the Chairmans part, even though small seeming in the begining was the real catalyst for her entire life, profession as well as emotions. Her feelings for her truly porpelled her in her dancing as well. If you've read 'Geisha a Life' Mineko Iwasaki, she notes how she was devoted and she was very good at dancing, but something was missing, and that was love. Sayuri had that from the start and only used it to make her a stronger woman.
So even though Nobu was very charitable and a good friend, he was never destined to really be with her. The Chairman sealed his fate early in Sayuir's life.
Sorry. I just love the romance of the book even though many aspects of it are terribly incorrect.

I read the book first.. which kind of hurt the movie for me. I didn't care too much for the movie.

It's the greatest movie of all time!!! My favorite part was her dance on the night of her mizuage and when she's transforming into a geisha! I loved it!!! ^_^
