"Not really," Rory said, shrugging. "It's not like one can just start up a conversation wi' 'Hey, I noticed you ne'er stand up fae yourself . . .' An when an opportunity is there t' point it out, it's ne'er really a good time. Like last night, fae example. Lee coulda defended herself more t' her mum, but she didnae do it. She just sat there. I couldnae ask her t' stand up fae herself more wi'out givin' your wife another thin' t' pick on her about, could I?"

Mr. Katan knew exactly what he was talking about, considering that's basically what was keeping him from asking Rory what they were discussing right now. "It's just one of those things you ease into, I guess. Start talking about the particular incident, I suppose, and I'm sure it'll come up." It's not as if he wanted his daughter to be picked on, and he was hoping Rory would actually give this particular issue a discussion.

Rory nodded. "I'll talk wi' her on it." He looked down at Ki Du. "I'm gonna take him out fae walkies." He got up, cradling the puppy his chest. "I'll be back in a moment." He headed for the back door.

Mr. Katan nodded, sitting back and idly turning back and forth in his chair, a bit restless with everything he'd been told. He stood, however, at the faint but familiar sound of the front door opening, and made his way to the door, opening it to reveal that Lee and her mother had come home. How odd, he thought, as he noticed the girl was actually smiling. Mrs. Katan wasn't, but that was normal. The shopping trip went well, then.
"Rory!" The woman called out, hoping the boy was within earshot. She didn't notice her husband joining them, smiling at the ladies somewhat pleasantly.

Rory was coming back in when he heard his name screeched and winced a bit. He looked down at Ki Du in his arms, the puppy grinning back up at him with his tongue lolling out. Clearly the dog would not protect him. Walking slowly, almost shuffling, he headed for the entrance hall to see what he was going to be yelled at for this time.

Mrs. Katan eyed the boy as he came closer, cocking her head, though not looking particularly angry. Not looking particularly anything. "Doesn't Lee look nice?" She asked, then gestured to her daughter, whose smile had brightened since Rory'd come into the room.
Lee was wearing one of her new dresses she'd bought while out, though this was much different than anything she'd normally wear. It wasn't simple, not in the least, and it wasn't particularly colorful, either. Bohemian, patterned, flowing, and layered, the dress was belted and dangling with some kind of metal... somethings. The best part was, she could wear her flats with it. She liked it, though it wasn't something she was used to. And she figured Rory would, too, considering she thought of it as a mixture between Farstep fashion and what her mother deemed appropriate. She wondered how it was that her mother actually liked her wearing this, until she learned it was made by some famous fashion designer she herself had never heard of. Rory liked it, though, right?

Rory nearly dropped Ki Du, eyes wide as he started at Lee, mouth slightly open. He moved to her, ignoring the fact her parents were standing there and pulled her into a kiss. After a moment he broke it, forehead resting against Lee's, voice a soft whisper against her lips. "You're beautiful." He moved to set Ki Du down then hugged the girl against him, stroking her cheek gently with the back of his knuckles. "This is a good look fae you, but not too often, eh? I do like them short skirts you wear too much."

Mrs. Katan was both satisfied and disgusted at Rory's appreciation, and simply looked away, frowning a bit.
Lee's cheeks reddened, hoping her parents weren't giving it too much thought, and hoped they couldn't hear what she and Rory were saying, even though they were literally a foot away. "Maybe I can find something a little shorter." She smiled, her heart beating a bit faster at how close he was.
Mr. Katan glanced over at the two, hearing clearly everything they were saying. Did he really have to say that to his wife? He doubted she'd take it as a compliment like Lee had. Besides, she didn't look too happy over there, not even wanting to look at the kids. Surely she wouldn't want to be hugged and kissed in that way, with the look she had on her face.

Rory glanced back at Mr. Katan with a look that clearly said "If I had something right now, I'd throw it at you. Go greet your wife, you sodding idiot. And kiss her, too!" He looked back down at Lee. "I take it you had a nice time out wi' your mum, aye? What else did you get?"

"Um..." Lee mumbled, clearly not sure she wanted to show the boy. "Well, my mother... sorta... got something for you, too..." He would hate it, wouldn't he? But her mother had insisted...
Mr. Katan almost flinched at the look he was getting, and did as he was being pressured to do, moping over to his wife's side and hesitating a bit before he gave her a light peck on the cheek. He was nervous, pressured, he couldn't give her a real kiss now! "You seem to have had a nice time." He glanced back at Rory, giving him a "See? I did it!" look in response.
Mrs. Katan raised an eyebrow to the man, clearly thrown on by the simple kiss to the cheek. She didn't slap him, though, and that was a step up from what he'd been expecting. "It went well enough, yes. Lee didn't want too much, though." It was clear that she didn't consider the multiple bags the two were carrying as "a lot".

"Really? Lemme see," Rory said, grinning at Lee. He didn't care what her mother had gotten for him, really, he'd still try to be gracious about it. Besides, her mother was buying him gifts, maybe it was a step in the right direction.
At Mr. Katan's look to him, Rory just rolled his eyes and shook his head slightly. It was a start, that small kiss, but the man was going to have to do more. He gently took the bags from Lee. "Here, let me get those. Prolly tired after all tha' shoppin', eh?" He gave a quick glance to Mr. Katan, a subtle hint that he'd whack the man over the head with a shopping bag if he didn't follow suit and help his wife.

Mr. Katan watched Rory, doing as he did and taking the bags from his wife. His gesture didn't go unnoticed, however, but wasn't appreciated in the way he'd hoped it would be.
The woman smirked at her husband, clearly amused. "What, are you a servant now? Take those up to my room for me, will you? Draw me a bath while you're at it, and take my laundry down, too." She liked to berate him, much in the same way Sienna did with her boyfriend, but the woman lacked the warmth for it to actually not sting.
Her husband just looked humiliated, sighing a bit to himself, but not returning the bags.
Lee slouched forward, her eyes falling to the bags that were now in Rory's hands. "I don't... I dunno if you wanna see it now." She shrunk into herself, hiding from the boy's reaction.
"Oh, just show him already." Mrs. Katan was losing her patience, and instead of waiting for Lee to pull the clothing out, she didn't it herself. She held up a pair of dark red silk boxers, raising an eyebrow as she showed the boy. It was one more obstacle Lee and he would have to go through to taint the girl's room further. "I was hoping I could finally walk into my daughter's room and not see your bare cheeks before anything else." Less of a gift for Rory than a gift for herself.

Rory arched a brow at the boxers. "You wouldnae be seein' me naked if you'd just learn t' knock." He took them from her, though. "Thanks, I guess." Yeah, he'd be conveniently forgetting them in the back of a drawer somewhere.
He glanced at Mr. Katan and noticed the man's expression. Of course, they were rich outsiders. They never did anything for themselves. He caught the man's eye and gave him a look, telegraphing that he should get a servant to do as his wife had asked, and then maybe show her some more damned affection.

"I do knock." She frowned at the boy, having actually expected him to like them. Well, fine. If he didn't want to be appreciative, she didn't care. Her eye was caught, however, by her husband walking toward the stairs, the woman following after him. "I was kidding, Herbet."
He nodded, looking back. "I was just getting someone to--"
"I was kidding. I'm going to sit out on the deck. Honestly... what's gotten into my husband..." She shook her head, taking the bags from him and walking up the stairs to go change.
Mr. Katan gave Rory a pleading look, asking what he should do now.
Lee looked up at Rory, raising an eyebrow in confusing. "Why have you been giving my dad looks?"

"La, but your mother's heart is ice, ain't it?" Rory sighed, exasperated. He set the bags down and headed over to Herb. "Okay, here. When she goes out t' her deck, get a servant to bring you, not her, but you her favorite drink that she likes t' sip on out there and then you take it to her. Donnae say a word, just set it down where she normally puts her drinks. Then massage her shoulders. Really gently."
If that didn't work, he'd just advise the man to file for divorce. He trotted back to Lee and picked up the bags, leaning down to give her kisses, hoping to distract her from asking questions. "Let's gae upstairs. If you're good, I'll model them boxers your mum got me fae you. Grab th' pup, eh?" He darted past Mr. Katan and up the stairs.
