"Fear leads to hate. Creatures hate what they do not understand. Secretly, I think they fear you because they know little of you. Hold that in your heart."
His voice was solemn as he groomed a long, floppy ear. He, too, was thankful that the rotten twins hadn't become violent. They seemed to be more of the bully type, though. Would they actually resort to violence further than a few pushes or shoves? He did not know and he had no intentions of finding out, but he couldn't help but to wonder if they would actually go through with it.

She blinked as he answered all her questions at once. He wasn't a bad rabbit...she could feel at least a tiny bit of reassurance as she looked at him. Slowly, she loped back to him, until she was only a rabbit's length away. Then, she lifted her body and snuffled at his nose, whiskers touching. "I'm Sandbur." she said. "And i should thank you...you may have saved my life back there."

"I doubt they intended to kill you. They would of had serious repercussions from the rest of the warren. Besides, I hardly doubt they have the spines to cause that sort of damage. At the worst, maybe a cold." He waved a paw, as if to dismiss the entire situation. He fell to all fours and groomed an ear hastily.
"It is a pleasure, Sandbur... I am called Ninebark."

"I meant just now...I would have left this warren if not for you just now. And I know the world out there. It is a frightful one, even if I wasn't a true Hlessi." she shuddered and shook herself, mud flying. "Ninebark, well I do say that is a fine name." she looked up to the moon, where its light cast on a small patch of flowers not too far- milkweed in smell, but lily-like in appearance. She felt her mouth water. "would you join me in a late silflay?" she asked him. "I don't fear whatever those twins fear from you."

Ninebark groomed an ear, obviously with some anxiety, as he listened to the doe speak.
"Yes. Yes, it can be ruthless out there. Cold. Dark." A chill washed over him and he shook in response, but fought to remain composed as his mind drifted back to dark times, where death clung to the fur of he and his former warren-mates. Oh, they certainly were bleak times.
"Ah, eh-eh, I could use with something in my stomach. Yes, I suppose I shall take you up on that offer. Let us siflay, then, yes?"

"It can be ruthless here, too." she reminded him. "With rabbits like that here." she shuddered at the thought. She shook her head. "But I wish to think of them no further." she said.
She bounded towards the flowers and breathed them in a moment. "I'm surprised no-one has eaten these. A rare night treat. They rarley grew at my old warren and when one did, we had to split it among all of us equally. I guess its because it only opens at night and is so foul smelling..." she tore at a petal, chewing thoughtfully.
"I wonder what makes rabbits and flowers good or bad. I'm sure those two...what were their names? Pitchwood and Wildweed? Anyway, i'm sure in their minds they are holy and tasteful. Just like how a homba will kill a mouse and we won't harm one. I've never tried mouse, so i don't know how it'd taste, but to a homba they must have some quality of flavour. And the plants. why is some flay called flayrah and some equally tasty food called flay. It makes you feel very guilty to judge others on what they eat...or how they act. I don't hate you, nor do i hate Pitchwood and Wildweed. I...pity them."

Most of her words were lost on him, but he nodded and smiled as he nibbled at the delicate, tasty flowers. They certainly were enjoyable, as well as her presence, even if she did talk oddly. He was one with no room to judge what so ever, what with the odd words and riddles he often spoke of when in a state of panic and perception.
"Never tried mouse, myself. I imagine we all taste equally delicious to the hombil, though. Either way, the pair are a nuisance to us."

She closed her eyes and nodded, itching herself before taking another bite of the petal. She shuddered gently at the taste, then looked him over. He wasn't an ugly rabbit, and he was pretty big...and he had stuck up for her. But would he make a good father, or at least breed strong offspring?
Her brain, always concerned with being a Marli, traveled to this. "Are you mated?" she asked him, taking a large bite of her favourite food.

He almost seemed to fall over at her question.
His rose-hued eyes had closed as he chewed the flower petals, but they snapped open almost instantly. It was a question he had completely not expected from her, mostly because even at an early age he had decided he was not the type that would try to mate. His ears got in the way and, on top of that, the does considered him a freak of nature and a curse on their warren. It wasn't exactly a good combination.
"Er, er, no. Not me. Never this one. Ears are so long, you see. Too long. Make it difficult. Living difficult. Can't get away as easily." He practically stammered as he prattled on in response.

"Oh." she said. "i'm the same...but for different reasons. I want kittens more then anything. I want to have at least some family...something that depends on me." she said, trembling. "I want to be needed, even if by one rabbit."
she looked to the sky. "There was a rabbit once, but he died with the rest of them at my old home."

"I am very sorry, very. Darkness takes them. It takes them. And we are alone." He sighed as he returned to nibbling flower petals. It was quite tasty, but his mind was now thoroughly distracted. It had been ages since the vast majority of his own warren had been lost...
"Disease. That is what took my home. Death and disease and decay and darkness. Oh, the darkness. Dead in their burrows. The darkness. And it followed us. Never alone. Never free. Stole us. Stole us away. Many a night before we were allowed to join this warren proper."

"It was inevitable. Human trickery....its barbaric. Its worse then any other elil..." she sighed. "What I can't fathom is why they keep some rabbits in hutches and kill the ones in the wild places." she sighed. "I've never been able to imagine a life in a hutch. Never seen one, but I've heard they are made of something similar to snare wires." she trembled at the thought, ears striking forwards and backwards. "you are from outside this warren too, aren't you?"

"Yes," he sighed quietly and groomed his long ears, "I was at one time." He sat back on his haunches and studied her carefully, as if trying to decide what to do next. She seemed pretty upset, but he wasn't exactly sure what he could do to bring her some comfort.
"Humans are rotten things, as you say far worse than elil any day. You... If you feel lonely, are welcome to share words and flay with me at my burrow."

"Well, thank you." she said gently, smiling at him out of the corner of her mouth. "That's very kind of you...you're the first one to be truly kind to me.."

"Aw, that sounds truly sad, my dear." He practically whispered as he cleaned his floppy ears thoroughly, as if trying to hide embarrassment. This was hardly a situation that he felt comfortable in and he was ready to venture back to his own burrow.
