Martyrize

PostPosted: Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:29 pm

Yeah, eh-heh... My experience with religion in the 3rd person:

Martyrize studies under the Wiccan faith due to her mother's beliefs. Martyrize decides it's just not for her.
Martyrize goes to a Catholic church for 3 months and decides it's just not for her.
Martyrize tries out Buddhism. Martyrize decides it's just not for her.
Martyrize tries to be Jewish. Martyrize decides it's just not for her.
Martyrize tries a NUMBER of beliefs out and comes to a conclusion:

She does not enjoy religion. She has found that worrying about it and trying to find a place with it has been a waste of her time. She's come to realize she has her own set beliefs and will not tolerate being brainwashed by these other thoughts about God or Resurrection or Rebirth. Martyrize decides not to talk much about this stuff or argue about it because it will also be a waste of her time.

Don't call her atheist, she believes in an Afterlife among many things that Atheists are against.
Don't call her agnostic, she DOES have a set of beliefs. They are not classified under anything though.

Then your "religion" can be defined as "Whatever the hell you want [WHYW]" :3 I like you already!

I think there will be a big shift of ideals in the next few years. Some might even say that's what our big shift of energy will be in 2012.

Personally, I used to welcome the actual existence of God, mostly because it might mean Somebody was right. I don't care who it is, but Someone would be right and we could all shut up about it. Wouldn't it be nice to have that kind of knowledge, that we areN'T alone afterall?

Vanilla eXee
Well, Someone is right. And eventually we'll all find out who is. Or maybe no one is right, and the truth is something none of us could ever phathom! Like we really all just live in one giant fish tank in the world's largest aquarium or something crazy like that. Now that would be awesome.

Humans are flawed to the point that we might be just kidding ourselves over the religion debate. . . I welcome your Aquarium Analogies! biggrin <3

Wow, I thought I was pulling that out of my a**, but I may have been partially correct. If by "partially correct" one means a ballpark away. But anyway....

"The Octopus may very well be the biggest threat to national security since brown people. They’re the most intelligent invertebrate in the world, can detach their arms, spray ink, move in perfect cadence with underwater currents, squeeze through any space larger than a quarter, and change color to blend in with their surroundings. Due to the inordinate number of superhuman powers they were granted, current biological studies assert that they may, in fact, be God."

I have to go ask Truman why he didn't tell me he was god.

Probably because he knows about your guild. . . Great way to make friends, though. "Hey, I'm a god! Be my friend!"

ive tried looking into a bunch of religions before i decided to just be pagan, i enjoy the whole thing of having many gods and all of them having their flaws. i have never been able to accept the concept of a perfect god that many other religions have. if our world isnt perfect then why should the god be perfect?

i was raised a mixture of christian and athiest from day one so ive always questioned things and very trarely have i gotten an acceptable answer

also unlike most people i welcome my religion being questioned. no one can prove me wrong on anything about it either XD

and no, im not wiccan, just pagan. i tried the whole wiccan thing, it was nice but didnt have enough oomph, way too peace loving for me. it didnt explain enough for my taste either and there was way too much bad information out there and i really didnt feel like sifting through it all. but now whenever i say im pagan people automaticly assume im wiccan. no one seems to grast the comcept that all wiccans are pagan but not all pagans are wiccan

Your current way of thinking sounds the same as mine 3nodding I found trying to keep to a set of religious beliefs just wasn't for me.... living a lie I suppose! If Christianity is against lying, then I wasn't following it by forcing my beliefs to be something they're not. So one day I sat there and asked myself... what DO I believe, truly? And it wasn't Christianity. And as much as branches of paganism intrigue me and there's lots of things in there I would love to believe... I just don't. I do believe in many things, including a version of the afterlife, but I am also open to change in those beliefs and the possibility of them being wrong. But that doesn't matter! If I am wrong and there's nothing after death... then nothing will be a nice relaxing thing 3nodding a rest! Because, ya know, there's nothing. If there is a God, they will judge me on who I am and my actions - I'm fine with that because I am living as true to myself as I can. How else can a person grow if they block out parts of who they are?

I guess we'll all just find out what happens at the time! Or not. Depending xd

Why I don't believe a god exists, nor is any religion necessary:

Lots of children are told that Santa is real. If we're good, we get presents at christmas time. Therefore, we try to be good and listen to get more presents or get what we want. Later, we're told Santa doesn't exist. Does this mean we're going to go crazy and act like juvenile delinquents are christmas time? No. chances are we, as kids, never acted any different than when we believed in him. The only difference is we'd probably beg our parents for things we wanted directly. Our lives didn't end, we didn't go into comas. Now replace Santa with god, and I think people will be ok.

The Bible:

It is being revised AGAIN this year. Things are being rewritten to "make more sense". So...what was the bible like before people started rewriting it to "make more sense"? Obviously this was written by man, not god.

How does a serpent/snake lose it's legs when it never had any to begin with?

Why does the story of noah and his arc sound just like a man-turned-god in the epic of gilgamesh, written YEARS and YEARS before? (Interestingly, this man-turned-god had many gods he believed in)

Ending note:
God does nothing for people, even if he did exist. He lets us suffer, he lets his "people" die, but don't worry. He plays favorites! So if god likes you enough he'll spare your life or help you ace that test. If not, you're screwed. Religion never did anything for me, and I don't act much differently now that I completely tossed it all in the garbage. Nothing ever made sense. I tried to believe in something for years and it was just hard to. This god never seemed good, and to be honest, I feel relieved that i don't believe. My sister stopped believing, and she said she doesn't feel paranoid or scared anymore. She feels better.

Well said Priscus. I like the santa/god analogy, that's a good one. Also, since santa is sort of like a god, one could say that believing in him is sacrilege.

Really! But I've noticed that every "religious" person makes the religion into an interpretation that works for them, as if justifying their acts that would normally be wrong in their religion. So, it's like nobody really believes in it. Someone I know is jewish and she swears at her parents and all that stuff, but was afraid to eat on a religious holiday when she was supposed to be fasting. A lot of people do this, and it doesn't make any sense to me.

Another point with the santa/god analogy, is that when you're little (at least for me) I believed Santa was so real that I thought I'd see rudolph and hear santa on christmas night. This can definitely be applied to the extremists who believe they see angles and jesus and / or god. People who believe aliens are 100% real (as in the big head, green skin type) actually come to earth and MATE with them. Replace aliens with demons or the devil. It's all just in people's head. If we heard anyone say any of this stuff we'd think them insane. So why is it when religion is associated with this stuff is it seen as sane?

I remember watching something and they put three guys who each thought they were jesus in a house together for a period of time. At the end they each still firmly believed that they were jesus. They were also skitzos, too, I believe...

If Jesus really did come back: he wouldn't be named jesus (unless he was of hispanic origin, as that name is common in that culture), christians wouldn't believe him at all and think he was loony, jews wouldn't believe he is the messiah ever, and muslims probably would keep up with their wars. So, no matter what, no one really believes in it because if some guy came off the street saying he was the saviour and messiah everyone (or mostly) would probably fear for their lives and run.
