My favorite all time song is "How Great Thou Art" but that is about the only "old time" song I like. I feel like most of those songs are about Him and what we can get and not sung to Him. I like worship songs (mostly Integrity music) where your singing TO God and not about Him, though I suppose there is a place for both.
"Holy, Holy, Holy", perhaps? Or maybe I should break out my "Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out"?

I used to go to a church where the music was "fahioned" afte the temple. Enter His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with praise etc. Never saw a single person leave those services not saved. Chuch would sometimes last until 2:00 with praise and worship taking a minimum of an hour of thar time.

I did the math a while back (in order to kill a few seconds of boredom), and I figure if we tithed our time the way we're supposed to tithe our money ... we'd spend 2 hours 24 minutes of each day on our knees.

I bring this up because ... well, that what it sounds like your church was aiming to beat.

As far as praise music, my only real problem with it is ... there's so much out there, but so little that actually gets used. Our music minister had about fifty pages of different tunes, but only five would ever get used. My church used to play "I Will Enter His Gates" during every service. Then I'd come home and see commercials on TV selling CDs of praise music ... same song. I reached the point where I was considering sending some people to His gates (via a broadsword) if they didn't expand their repertoire a bit.

I mean, come on ... sing to Him a new song!

I love it when at protestant churches they sing a song with simple beginners level guitar chords, and they say hey, "I'm going to teach you all a new song!" They they strum the guitar, and it sounds EXACTLY like the song before it. xp xp

The Revelation Song (I really like Kari Jobe's voice), How Great is Our God, and the band Flatfoot 56 (they lead me to Christ)

I have a lot of random music I like - everything from the Irish Tenors to Falling up to Mercy Me.

Eykos: Wow, I like that, it's nice 3nodding I really like the Kyrie Eleison (second song) too - it's always been one of my favorite parts of the Mass too, I never get tired of it.

Ah! Catholic?

I'm Orthodox, the prayer "Lord have mercy" is a large part..indeed one of the main prayers..of our liturgy.

Simple and beautiful in it's humility, and arrow to the ear of our Lord.

I've been going to a Catholic church for the past year, but I'm not confirmed. I've done too many things without really knowing what I'm doing, or what it's about- I was raised protestant, so it's a big change. I want to be sure I don't do anything with insincerity.

Exactly- I think it's something a lot of people miss out on when they start trying to get too elaborate, but there is definately something special in simple prayers like the Kyrie.

There is a certain humility in the "elaborate", a submission of one's will to the order of the Kingdom.

When the Byzantine rite was established in Byzantium under Constantine, it was done so prayerfully, with each movement of the hand or each utterance of the lips pointing upwards, every word that is spoken in the service draws attention to the Lord, nothing is out of place, all is in order, as the Kindgom of Heaven is eternally ordered.

The liturgy is not simply an upwards directing of prayer to the Kindgom, but an extension of it, when you enter into the liturgy, you literally enter before the throne of the One True God.

Our prayers and songs, carefully chosen and passed down through the ages of ages, join together with the eternal song of the Seraphim, who with their six wings cry out throughout all time
"Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come"

"Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."
- Revelation 4:8

In the liturgy, the disorder and conflict of the world passes away, and we pass directly into the presence of the Lord God Himself.

It is but a mere glimpse of the eternity that awaits us should the Lord in His mercy deem us fit to enter into it.

Oh true - there's nothing wrong with elaborateness itself. That's not what I meant to say at all. I just mean that it has been my experience that sometimes people forget that short and simple can be good too.

You seem to have a gift for... eloquence? I'm not sure exactly, but it is interesting, and generally pleasant to see/read. I feel my own ability to write anything meaningful and of quality has diminished since I've been so occupied with school and research. I'm afraid my ability to express myself has suffered also.

Well, I honestly don't listen to Christian music too often, but I listen to Christian bands like Paramore and Flyleaf, and some of their songs have to do with Christianity. I do love all worship songs, though, and I don't really have a favorite at the moment.
