Gemmae smiled. "But it's the unexpected that makes life interesting!"
She thought on the rest of what Elena had said. "I can see how quiet can be appealing...though I never found it so until I had the children to wreck it," she commented wryly.

"Well," Elena said, "I don't have children." And she wasn't in any particular hurry to change that, if it came down to it, because that meant... other people in her life. Not just people who passed through and left soon after, but people who would stay, and that honestly sort of unnerved her. "I'll have to take your word for it."

The uni chuckled inwardly. "Somehow I must've guessed that." But her smile was kind, inviting Elena to share in the joke.
"One day I'm sure you'll have children of your own. When you're ready."

Elena looked momentarily baffled. She'd never seriously considered children, not for any length of time. "Why are you sure of that?" she asked, honestly curious.

A big grin crossed the purple mare's face. "If I can become a loving mother instead of a breakneck rebel, I'm sure you can have children."
She cocked her head to the side. "Or we could go with the biological explanation of everyone has the instinct to procreate. Whichever you prefer."

"... the what?" Elena shook her head in surprise. "I haven't felt any.... biological need to... pro... really, I haven't." She paused a moment, then added, "Besides, the only stallion I've seen recently is that one I said before. I know how these things work, at least."

"Ah, yes." Gemmae's mouth twisted as she recalled the earlier track of their conversation. "No sane mare would want to do anything with a stallion like that."
"However, I'm sure that you'll know it when you meet the right stallion. Whenever that may be."

Hmm. So perhaps Elena wasn't quite as perceptive as she'd thought. Or maybe...maybe the white mare didn't want to be. An interesting question.
"I'm sure you do," she murmured. It hadn't been the trees around them Gemmae had meant, after all, but the "forest" in Elena's mind, the safe place where she hid.

Elena was puzzled. She wasn't sure what Gemmae was getting at, at all. She was happy here, alone. She wasn't sure why that was so hard to grasp, or why Gemmae kept... well, almost pushing.

If a horse had eyebrows, Gemmae would have raised one at that. Elena was a nice girl - a really nice girl! - who was happy with her safe place and would stay there until she either gathered the courage to leave or until something terrible dragged her out. The purple mare sighed inwardly.
"I suppose I'll have to believe you," she replied at long last.

"I hope so," Elena said, seriously. "I wouldn't lie about that! Or... well, about anything, really." She paused a moment. "I should probably go," she said. "It was very nice meeting you."
