Rhian pouted. "But I didn't mean to get lost! And Granpa Vin-Vin helped me get home!"

Ziazan went tense, wings spreading out stiffly, every card and feather seeming to vibrate. "What did you say?"

Rhian tilted her head and flicked her antennae. "When I got lost. I was in the city and found Granpa Vin-vin sleeping; he helped me get home!" What was upsetting her sibling so? she had no idea, Granpa Vin-Vin had been nice in that sort of gruffly granpa way.

Zia got up and went to where its sister was, catching hold and pulling her close, hissing at her, "Don't you ever tell Faolan or Ellandra about that. Don't mention Vin again, ever. You stay away from him."

Rhian wriggled, trying to get free of her sibling's grip. "Sibling-Zi! - Zi-a-zan! You're hurting me, what did I say?!?"

"Vin is bad. You promise me you'll never go near him again," Zia said, relaxing its grip on Rhian slightly.

"Yeah, well, he nearly killed me when I was still a proto," Zia said, frowning.

Rhian's antennae flicked in surprise. "But - but why?" She paused for a moment. "Maybe he was bad then but isn't now...?" She asked tentatively, not all certain.

Zia let go of her and walked to the couch, flopping down onto it, laying on its stomach. It really didn't feel like talking about the rogue Essentic.

Rhian wilted, fluttering up to the rafters. "I'm sorry, sibling-Zi. . ." she whispered, taking her perch and cocooning herself. she just kept digging the hole she was in even deeper, didn't she?

Zia looked up at her. "It ain't your fault. You didn't know. Just . . . don't go around him anymore. He's dangerous. Don't tell Fao or Mama either. They won't like it. Especially Fao."
Faolan came out of the bedroom, laughing about whatever he and Elle had been discussing or doing, and grinned at Zia. "Where's the other?" When Zia pointed to the rafters, he looked up. "Still sulking?" He shrugged and went over to collect the packages. "Elle, you didn't even look at this one." He held up a bright red box with yellow dots on it and shook it a bit.

Rhian nodded, even though she didn't really get it. She couldn't reconcile the nice Essentic who'd helped her get home to the nightmare one Zia was talked about who'd almost killed it. It would probably take seeing what he could do for her to really become wary of her "Granpa Vin-Vin". Still, "...I promise, Sibling-Zi," she said, and then fell silent again.
Ellandra followed Faolan out of the bedroom and blinked. "No, I didn't - how could I have missed that one?" She asked, then blinked. "Is it something that's safe to shake?" She asked, grabbing it from Fao with hurried, excited hands.

Ellandra grabbed for the package, hesitating long enough before opening it to look at Faolan and say, "I feel like it should be my birthday to be getting all of these," before carefully tearing off the wrapping.
