Baby mayu gets ahold of finger paints.

What's red, yellow, pink, and blue all over? Evidently, today it was Mayu, as Kimiko quietly observed from her comfy seat on the couch. The baby had recieved a kit of finger paints, and she would not let them down. By this rate, the paints would run out by Saturday, at the least. Kimi heaved a heavy sigh, and winced as she got splattered with a bit of blue paint. Ah, to be a parent was very difficult . . .

The child sprawled over the floor on this December evening seemed to be enjoying herself. She had been caught in a burst of creativity since her eyes set on the plastic canisters of finger paints, and she had painted over every surface she could find. No, really, EVERYTHING. The coffee tables, the walls, Miyu's face . . . Everything shone with a cheerful shade of the three primary colors. Seemed like a lot of fun for Kimiko and Mr. Mop later on.

The girl perched upon the couch watched the babe intently for a few moments more, then stood up sharply, almost cutting into the drab atmosphere that floated about the house.

"I'll be going up to my room. Call me if you'se need me." Kimi muttered, then turned primly toward the stairs and skipped up two-steps-at-a-time, a bit glad to be gone from the scene. It was a less than ordinary day for Gaia--or maybe it was just them, who knows--as it seemed, there was nothing amusing on television, the snow was icy and hard (not in playing condition, y'know.), and there was just absolutely NOTHING for them to do.

The black-haired girl took a deep breath in and let it out slowly, as if it would cleanse her soul from the boredom of the day behind her, a sort of baptimism if you could call it that. She picked up the old worn book from the nightstand and flipped to the bookclip--an old leaf with a few faint scribbles made by pen, but she liked it--and began a new entry.

DECEMBER 27, 2OO5

December 27, 2005. Tuesday. Snowy.

Well, what can I say? Nothing much of interest has happened today.

All I can write about is Mayu's new interest in finger paints. Ah, the finger paints. For Christmas, a certain SOMEONE (I'm guessing it was Miyu, perhaps one of my friends dropped it off for her a few days before) that we don't know, it was an unmarked package, sent her a few buckets of finger paints. Why finger paints? I don't know. A soft, chewy baby toy or a pillow would've been a great choice, but Mayu seems to be loving these paints. She's made quite a few pictures--twenty-five, if I remember exactly--and we're going to Gambino tomorrow to pick up frames for them. They're quite creative, y'know.

Ha-ha, maybe I'm just a proud parent. She seems captivated though, and the pictures do seem to have a bit of a deeper meaning than what they look like on the outside. I can't describe it really, but it just SPEAKS to me. Miyu and the Talaye also seem to see this.

Wow, I've pulled a whole bunch of stuff out of this day, even if it was really dull. Well, I guess we all have to live and live on, even through the boring days. (ha-ha!)

Mayu has also been talking more lately. Sometimes she just spouts off in a bunch of babble, but some of the words make sense. I've heard "Maa" (Nickname for herself, I would assume.), "mama" (Nuff' said.), and some other words come from her. It's quite cute, if you really think about it.

Well, that about sums up everything that's happened lately, or at least the things that are eventful enough to write about.

One last thing: NEW YEARS IS COMING UP! I'M SOOO EXCITED! Well, I'll close this entry now and get back downstairs. Maybe there'll be something new on TV!

Later days,
Kimiko.

Dear diary..

JANUARY 4, 2OO6

January 4, 2006. Wednesday. Drafty, with a bit of snow.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate traveling? It gives me a huge headache. But, I guess it's worth it for the scenery. I don't really mind riding in cars, but in busses.. Yech.

So anyway, we're riding home on the Blackhound right now. We're halfway to Barton (The cities are a lot farther apart than it looks on the maps, take my word for it.) right now, and we're all a little bit cranky right now. Mayu's playing with her bunny doll in the car seat beside me, and Miyu's reading over my shoulder (Stop reading, I mean it.) right now. Yes, I do mean it.

I am so the boss of you. Keep reading, and you won't get your green tea pocky when I go to the oriental food store tomorrow.

There. As I was saying, Mayu's acting pretty calm right now. She was pretty social at the party, wandering around and chattering with the.. party life. And by party life, I mean the other toddlers that were graciously dropped off in the playroom during the party. I did peek in a few times during the.. time the bash spanned, and it was quite cute. She was jibbering to the others in baby gab, and it looked like they were having a small party of their own. (Ha-ha!)

The party lasted for 3 freaking days. Can you believe it? We all stayed in the Gambino hotel during the night, then returned to the house to party the day after. I think the hotel owners were quite happy for the business, the partygoers took up a whole wing of the hotel! It was a bit crazy, but I think we were all a bit happy for the stress relief.

Other than that, nothing exciting really happened. We did get to see some of the Gambino nightlife though. And by nightlife, I mean we swung over to the shopping district and bought, well, a bunch of clothes.

Anyway, a certain someone is peeking over my shoulder again so I'll close this entry for now.

Later days!
-Kimiko

Dear diary..

JANUARY 19, 2OO6

January 19, 2006. Thursday. Clear skies.

Wow, havn't written in quite a while. Guess I broke my resolution, huh?

Hehe. Anyway, a whole lot has been going on. Mostly shopping, but lots and lots of milestones have passed too! Also, I did take a whole bunch of pictures of Mayu, but I still need to post them in the scrapbook.

Got a bunch of spring clothes for Mayu, and a bunch of toys as well. Heck, no baby can have too many toys! I also bought one of those playpens for Mayu (y'know, the big colorful rainbow ones that are like, 12' by 12'?) and a journal in case she wants to record her thoughts and adventures and .. stuff.

Right.

My little Mayu is growing each day, and so fast too! If only I had a camera to record every second of her life .. I mean, just yesterday she was talking in semi-coherant sentences and leading me through the crowds downtown! I do realize that she is not of us mortals, and that she progresses at a much faster rate than us average Gaians do. But still, it's so sweet and amazing! You just want to laugh along when she laughs and cry when she cries.

Ah, I love them both, Miyu and Mayu. Orphne and Akumu too, and every other person in this dysfunctional family. Heh. We might not be the Brady Bunch, but this family's great, for all its faults.

Well, here's my second entry for the new year. It was an incoherant mess, but at least I got to take time off and just write for a few minutes. It's good to express yourself and let your thoughts out, you know?

Anyway, duty beckons. Miyu's hollering about something and Mayu's crying. I'll write more soon when I get time~

Later days!

Kimiko.

P.S., There has been something I've taken a great interest to lately. I should start a log for it .. Maybe get a new notebook to record my findings or use one of those internet journals. I'll check into those later.

A gift from a friend.

Huni Pi
Huni had entered and left the HQ wordlessly, dropping off two brown paperbags near the door. The note attatched were identical in content, differing only to the person being addressed. One read to Mayu, the other to Eeenie.

The Note for Mayu
Hello there, Pae made something for you and she hopes you will like it. She also wishes to see you again sometime and we both hope that our paths will cross again.

From,
Paestri and Huni Pi.

An addition to the family.

Kimiko had been doing many things on impulse lately, as the silver-haired girl quietly observed. She had brought home a series of odd things, including a set of colored potpouri and a soap on a rope, for whatever reason she had that very day. Strange. Very strange indeed. It was as if some spirit of shopping had possessed the girl to buy anything and everything she laid her eyes upon.

This would be bad for the bank account.

Miyu's Journal-Thing Of D00M!

Well, well, looks like I finally found a use for this old notebook. Journal. Thing.

Anyway, on to the good stuff. As you and I know, Kimiko's been acting really weird lately. Last night, she brought home a bag of cat food. What the heck? Cat food? She said it would come in handy today. I doubt it.

She's hollering for us (Me and Aku and Orphy) to come help. I'm ignoring her, and the Talaye are playing with the baby. Sorry Kimi, if you want to spend all of our money on useless things, you'll have to lug them in the house yourself.

Well, that ends my random.. thing for today. This journal'll probably just end up on the bottom of my bed like my other junk, heh.

~Miyu the Great

After snapping the diary closed, the girl once again directed her attention to the crimson hall. The door opened and shut, its passenger collapsing onto the ground with aplomb.

"You could have helped me with this.. this.. STUFF, you know."

"I could have, but I didn't want to. What the heck did you buy today, anyway? A scratching post or something?"

"Exactly." The black-haired one smirked, scrambling to her feet. In her arms seemed to be a furry bundle of tan-brown .. fur. With a tail.

"Oh my god. You bought a cat."

"Yes, yes I did." Kimi laughed, and set the feline down on the tatami-covered floor. "Now, help me get all of this other stuff into the living room? I've got a scratching post, a dish, and a hell of a lot of toys."

The cat was a cute thing, really. A tan-colored tabby with light brown stripes across its back. Mayu had taken to her immediately, and they were rolling across the floor like two regular compadres.

The Talaye did not.

"A cat? Why, may I ask, a cat?"

"Aw, mum, it's not that bad. Look, it's kinda cute."

"Cute? We CHASE cats, Akumu."

"Oh, right. We do. Hey, is Samurai Jack on? I bet Aku will kick his DERRIERE!"

"Now, now, no one's chasing anyone in this household. Anyway, I've decided to name her Verdandi. For the watcher of the present."

The group muttered okays, and dispersed throughout the living room. Mayu hobbled over to Kimiko's leg and gave her a drooly hug, then went back to playing with Verdi.

"Kids." The girl smiled, and grabbed a book on the coffee table. Blowing a thin layer of dust off the cover, she flipped to the bookmark and made her way in the direction of the kitchen.

Spring is the time for the birds and the bees.

FEBUARY 14, 2OO6

Febuary 14, 2006. Tuesday. Valentine's Day.

It's Valentine's day! Hurrah! I think I'll write in a pink pen just for today.

That feels better. Anyway, it's Valentine's day! I never really saw a good excuse for this day, though my siblings were nuts over it. They came home showered in roses and candy. I suppose it's the adult version of Halloween, except you get frilly chocolate and flowers instead of little pieces of tasteless candy. Same thing, really.

Anyway, though I don't really see a point in this holiday, I decided that it would be a nice chance to take everyone out. It was a bad choice. The town was pretty much drowned in pink (though I think Mayu did like that a bit) with streamers and hearts everywhere. I mean, literally, EVERYWHERE.

A man dressed like Cupid came up to us while we were walking down the streets, and handed us pink-and-red fliers for some kissy-kissy café somewhere around town. Seeing a grown man in diapers and a fake halo is just hilarious, I'm sorry. We had a good laugh at the poor sap, who tried to hit us with a foam arrow and missed horribly, and moved on.

The crowds were horrible. Take the traffic jams in New York City, replace the cars with people, multiply by 10, and that's what it was like today. I really couldn't believe that all of those people had somewhere to go to on this day in particular. The amount of PDA displayed here was atrocious, too. You couldn't turn a head without seeing SOME couple making out or buying roses or SOMETHING.

However, the weather wasn't that bad, I have to admit. It was pretty clear, except for one or two clouds that kept the amount of sun down. Though, I couldn't help but double-check.. I could have sworn that they tinted the sky pink for Valentine's Day. It seems like something they would do, at least. Of course, I later realized that it was just early morning when I saw the sky, but still -- with all of those mages running around, it's nothing short of amazing that they haven't pulled off something stupid like this.

That's a rant for another day, I suppose. Anyway, we went to the park where some of the other kids were playing. Mayu went near the playground area, Miyu was reading some book she had picked up from a local bookstore (Where does she get the money? I supply everyone with a 1,000g allowance per week, but that's it..), Verdi (Now dubbed "cat", it's an easier name to say anyway.) was running about with Mayu, and I was watching them.

I guess Mayu made a new friend or something, because I saw some boy come up to her and give her a daisy. Cute, but I don't think my kid's up to a serious relationship yet.

After we left, we spun around to check out the café that we had been handed a flier for before, and it wasn't half bad. We got crepes, but the waiters scared me so much that we ran in and out just like that. They were dressed in frilly pink-and-red clothes like the rest of the town. Simply frightening.

That sums up my day quite nicely, I think. Now, to settle on the couch and watch some relaxing movies.. Yes, I think the horror genre would do fine, though I'm in the mood for some comedy now too.

Kimi.

A self-discovery trip on the path to nowhere? part 1 of 2

MARCH 23, 2OO6

March 23, 2006. Thursday, early morning. I-can't-tell-right-now-because-it's-freaking-4:00-in-the-morning.

Man, I really do need to get back into writing in this old thing. It's covered in dust, for God's sake.

Anyway, I'm going out today, which is why I'm writing so early in the morning, and also why my handwriting looks like crap. It'll be fun, but will Mayu and Miyu really be alright at home by themselves? Maybe I should call up that babysitter I found last night. Of course, the Talaye will be here as well.

I can just imagine it, Aku going through her Samurai Jack DVDs again from the beginning, while Orph keeps an eye on the young'uns. Verdi will probably just take a catnap (See, I can make jokes too! Cat and nap! Brilliant, if I might say so myself.) in her scratching post-house-whatever the hell it is.

Miyu will probably be playing video games, oh joy. I'm a little worried about Mayu though, will she be fine without me in the house? Maybe I'm just going about like a worried hen, but whatever.

I'm sure they'll be okay.

Later days, Kimiko.

List left on the kitchen table.

To everyone: I've gone out today. It's like a little self-discovery trip, I guess. I'll probably be back tonight, if not, tomorrow! I'm bringing back gifts, so don't whine about me not taking you. That's all.

To Aku and Orph: The food's in the cabinet right to the refridgerator; if you can't open the bag then bug Miyu to do it or something. Don't forget to bug Miyu to put food out for Verdi too!

To Miyu: Don't whine to me when I get back, you're the only one who has opposable thumbs AND good motor skills. Food's in the fridge -- applesauce and baby food for Mayu, just pop the food (NOT the applesauce!) in the microwave for about 2 minutes. And don't forget to put a bib on Mayu, I don't want to have to do a week's worth of laundry when I come back.

Your food's in the fridge too, two sandwiches (ham and turkey) for lunch, and some lasagna and macaroni salad for dinner. You can fix breakfast, I hope.

Don't forget to feed the nightmares in the backyard, Verdi, and the koi fish out in the pond.

Love you all! I've brought my cell phone and laptop, so either call or email me if you guys have any trouble.

See you soon!

~Kimiko

". . . Great. So Kimiko goes out to relax while we're stuck here? And I have to do all the work too!"

"Oh, suck it up, Elf-thing. I don't see you doing any work around the house while Kimiko's here."

"Aw, mum, be nice. Say, could we call Tad up? I wonder how he's doing with H.E."

". . . Fine. And sure, if you can remember their phone number."

"Yay! Now what was it again? 555-16-something?"

"Gaaaah!"

". . . Meow?"

. . . . . . . .

The bus wheels clattered uncomfortably beneath the girl's feet, leaving her with a scowl on her face.

"Discovering my roots .. What kind of a brilliant idea was this, anyway? And it had sounded so appealing to me a few hours before."

"Stop 6, Gambino City!"

"Finally." The girl rose with a sigh, clutching her laptop with a fierce kind of protection as she deported from the bus. The overhead sun shone brightly through the clouds, its warm rays falling upon the heads of happy travellers and vendors alike.

Despite her unhappy countenance, Kimiko had always had an attraction towards the city of Gambino, its sparking white-sand beaches a luxury compared to the "brutal" living conditions at home. Too bad she had already settled in Durem, hm.

Kimiko shuffled around in her bag for a few minutes, finally retrieving her wallet from the mess that was her laptop carrier-combination-sidebag. After all, if she was to get caught up in Gambino, she would have to have SOME pocket change to get by. Even the price of food was outrageous these days, 500 gold for a tasteless patty drowned in condiments upon a sesame seed bun. Amazing.

There was no money in the wallet, not even a penny salvaged from the depths of the blood-red sofa in the living room. Kimiko groaned loudly and slunk down to the sidewalk, where she slumped there distastefully for a few moments. Then her eyes set upon the bank directly ahead.

Getting to her feet, the girl ran joyfully toward the bank building towering before her, almost slipping on the concrete steps. Very graceful. She pushed open the glass doors, running to the nearest teller window she could see.

The interior of the building was just as beautiful as the exterior, flooring a rich red carpet. Engraved booden benches were scattered tastefully around the large lobbyway, shined and polished to the brink of perfection. Or perhaps just looking like something from a Star Wars outtake, but that would be an issue to debate over some other time. Verdant island palms--potted, of course--were placed around the rooms as well, giving the bank a sort of tropical setting. Fitting.

Of course, Kimiko had not stopped to absorb any of the details in, speeding through the lobby on pure fuel of money, or at least the thought of it. A voice snapped her out of her greed and back into the consious world.

A woman with scarlet chin-length hair stood before her, adjusting her secretary classes before speaking up again. Her voice had a snippy feel to it, a sort of stuck-up-you're-wasting-my-time tone.

"May I.. help you?"

Kimiko had been observing her shoes for all this time (Did they have any scuff marks?), glancing up at the sound of the woman's voice.

"Ah.. Welcome back, Ms. Amakura. I suppose the crackpot detectives were right." The lady smiled primly, continuing. "Though, it seems you grew out your hair in the past few years?"

"...Uh?" Kimiko blinked, obviously clueless as of what was going on.

A continuation. part 2 of 2

"You obviously have the wrong person!" Kimiko stated angrily, after listening to the happy teller's rambling for five minutes straight. There was a silence as she realized that all eyes were on her, and she cleared her throat. The businessmen returned to their chatting, the residents returned to their ATM machines, and a very annoyed Kimiko tapped a sneakered foot impatiently as her gaze bore down on the poor teller's forehead.

"Ahem... Very well, then." The redhead mumbled, adjusting her glasses nervously. Making a mistake was rather embarassing for her already, but being snapped at as well? That was humility in its purest form. "How much would you like to withdraw from your account?"

"10,000 gold, please?" Kimiko replied, breathing slowing to a calm pace after the scene she had just caused.

"Yes, ma'am." The teller nodded furiously, not wanting to experience any more of the teenage girl's rage. One dose for the day was quite enough. She quickly handed the girl her money and her reciept, and sighed with relief as she watched the lady leave. She wasn't going to keep herself updated with those silly conspiracist theories, at least, not anymore.

"Alright!" Kimi pumped her arms into the air upon exiting the cold building, half-walking half-skipping down the steps of the bank. "Now that I have some cash in my wallet, it's time to investigate! I also would like to do some more research on the Amakuras, after what that lady had said.." Thinking out loud, she noticed a group of tourists looking strangely at her and hissed at them to go away. They fled the premises of the bank immediately.

"First things first, however, I need food." she said to herself, hearing her stomach grumble with hunger. She quickly found a fast-food store, and after downing a burger and a soda laced with sugar, began on her perilous quest of self-discovery.

She made her way to the broken-down mansion on the other side of the city, kicking aside pieces of rubble as she snuck past the gates. She didn't even need to sneak, really -- the mansion was unguarded. No one would go near the old place, and no one had even cleared out the rubble from the disaster. Onlookers had seen a flash of red light fill the windows for a split second, and it was enough to drive most of the crowds away. The braver ones that had lingered behind to see the mansion collapse on its foundations had also heard a terrible scream, and then eerie silence.

A rescue squad had gone to check the place out a day later, bless their hearts, and found nothing. No bodies, no nothing -- it was like the people in the Amakura mansion had simply disappeared without a trace. And then, eyewitness reports of the dead rising from the ashes began sirculating around town. Everyone left the mansion alone, after that.

On the same day, little 11-year old Kimiko remembered waking up on the shining sidewalks of Gambino, having nothing but the clothes on her back, and remembering nothing of her past except her name.

She wasn't quite sure why she had returned to this place after the four years that had passed. It could have been a tinge of nostalgia that had brought her back to the coastal city, or just a spot of curiosity and recklessness. Whatever the reason, however, it seemed like she had made the right choice.

--------------------

Why? Why? Her calculations were perfect! The minerals had been weighed down to the hundredth gram! Why had this happened?

The alchemical rebound was.. strong. It shook the building on its foundations, weakening the already-aged rock. The collapse was inevitable. The servants had realized the disaster minutes before it had happened, luckily, and had gotten the family out of the house safely. Little Kimiko was nowhere to be found, and despite the master and the lady's protests, had been left behind.

They watched from a safe distance as the windows filled with white light, then nothing. The shingles began to fall shortly after. The lady had begun to cry as this time, and the master sobbed along with her.

From just several hundred feet away, the little Kimiko was sobbing as well, but for a different reason. She backed into a corner, shielding herself from the shattering glass as she watched the play of events. The calculations had been perfect, the ingredients selected with a careful eye.. so what was wrong? The question echoed in her mind as she watched her monster rise up and shake the very foundations that had held the mansion up for so long.. and then fall. It was unstable, the flesh and bones sizzled away as it let out one final shriek before its inevitable demise.

The building collapsed not soon after that. Kimi was indeed glad that she had installed the extra-strength shelves on the wall, they had protected her from most of the large debris and she had only gained a few shallow gashes. One notable piece of rock had dislodged itself after she had made her way upstairs and to the collapsed hallway, however. Blackout was imminent.

And the rest.. was history.

--------------------

The girl crawled into what was once the ballroom, shoving aside the more larger pieces of rock to made a nice path for herself to walk through. The building was oddly familiar to her, though she couldn't quite place it on her tongue just yet..

"Curiouser and curiouser," she muttered, brushing off some marble-dust from her shirt. "This is like entering the rabbit hole."

She had gained a seriouser personality upon entering the secluded area, finding no reason to keep up the sugar-coated sham she had always put up for strangers and other people, in general. It helped her concentrate, really, as meditation did for other people.

After what had seemed like a wild goose-chase over countless piles of destroyed marble that had trailed halfway through the mansion, Kimiko had found her jackpot. Without so much as a glance down the dusty old stairs, she began to descend into the ever-so-familiar darkness.

The cellar, as it seemed like (though she couldn't really tell if it was just a lower floor, the building was so demolished), was pitch-black save for the light peering down from the staircase above. Kimiko shuffled aside the broken glass and began to skim the surroundings. Curious, it looked like someone had set up some sort of laboratory here some time ago.. Perhaps a dabbler in the same research she had delved into now?

She had to find out more, but there weren't enough clues. The girl's eyes noticed specks of blood splattered carelessly against an uncovered wall, and she found herself looking up. She fell to the ground carelessly (luckily, in an area where there was not broken glass) and gawked at the ceiling with wide eyes, before hesitantly looking at the cement floor.

The blood stained into the gray stone was a horrible sight. Kimiko wasn't squeamish by a long shot, but she felt herself slipping into unconsciousness.. which was, perhaps, the best thing that had happened to her on the whole trip. At least she wouldn't have to face the ordeal now, she would deal with it later.

How did they know? How did they...

And then, the darkness took over.

--------------------

The child woke up hours later to darkness, turning over and watching the stars glimmer through the night sky. She wasn't sure where she was, or where she had come from, or where she had gotten the stinging pain in her forehead.

The only thing she could remember was a name. She didn't know whose it was, or why she knew it, but it was there -- and so she kept it. Shuffling through the remains of the mansion, she made her way out to the large marble stairs and descended, little feet pattering all the way. Through the wrought-iron gates she went, onto the golden streets of Gambino city, and down the road. A spotlight shined upon the town center as if it was proclaiming the city's wealth 24-7, even if the pedestrians and tourists had all but disappeared into their cosy homes and hotels and other dwelling locations.

She smiled, finding a spot to sit against the hard brick, and looked back up to the sky.

"Kimiko," she muttered quietly, and fell asleep.

The next few days were like a dream. For nourishment she would pad around until some stranger bought her a serving of food and then thanked them profusely, for entertainment would window-shop in the shopping district of Gambino. She lived life like this for the next week, never looking back and never wondering where she had come from. And then, she had met them.

The Japanese couple were looking for a retreat from taking care of their teenagers, bless their little hearts, and happened upon little Kimiko as she was scavenging the town for her daily needed breakfast. She had pawned a crepe off of a kind woman a day before, and a biscuit off of a timely gentleman another time.

Of course, the two sat her down and bought her a full-sized meal. After much fussing over the little girl's unruly hair and tattered clothes, the couple -- the Hinasakis -- decided to take her under their own wing. Kimiko never protested.

--------------------

The teen woke up hours later, rubbing her head and grumbling. She felt another wave of nausea wash over her as she remember the array that had been stained into the floor with blood, and stood up slowly, stumbling forward slightly as she attempted to steady herself.

She hobbled towards the stairwell, giving a last look of repluse at the room before making her way back upstairs.

Someone else had attempted to make a homunculus. That was why the Amakura mansion had collapsed. Someone else was after her same goal.

"I swear.." Kimiko chuckled, ducking beneath a fallen pillar. "People these days are really insane."

And with that statement, she left the mansion, never looking behind.

MARCH 24, 2OO6.

March 29, 2006. Friday. Rainy.

That was some trip yesterday. I'm.. quite surprised that someone else would even attempt something like this. Maybe it's a sign that I should stop my research. But no, I will press on.

I will find a way to succeed.

Kimiko.

Quest Time

One morning, seemingly like any other, finds Mayu gone from her bed. She has been snatched, stolen in the dark of night, by the group of people watching Kimiko. Although their motive for taking Mayu is unknown, she is unhappy to be among strangers. Unfortunate for Mayu, Kimiko takes a full day to realize she is missing because she has become absorbed in an alchemy experiment.

Your quest, tiny Legend, is to attempt an escape from this group using what skills you possess or at least to explore as much of their hideout as possible before Kimiko, much delayed by her thirst for forbidden knowledge, can come to your rescue.

Good luck!

Kidnapped. part 1 of 11

They had come in the dead of night. While the stars shimmered overhead and a sleepy moon hung in the night sky, they had come and gone without making so much as a sound.

The two figures -- a woman and a man -- perched upon the now-toddler Mayu's windowsill silently. They were hidden by the shadow of the neighboring house, invisible to bystanders and the occasional insomniac. The lady, scrounging in her sidepack, scanned the perimeter slowly then turned to face the man.

"Don't do that, idiot."

"Why not?"

"You'll wake them all up."

"I don't see you coming up with any brilliant ideas."

"Or do you?"

"... No."

The seconds ticked by agonizingly. After a few moments more, the woman's shadowed hand withdrew a hairpin from the pack, and she began working on the window's lock with swift movements. Within seconds, the sealed latch clicked open silently. Kimiko had painstakingly oiled every hinge, lock, and knob in the house herself. More luck to them.

Lying in the crib was a sleeping toddler, her silver hair delicately framing her face. She had been tucked in lovingly, and was snoozing away in dreamland as her soon-to-be kidnappers watched her quietly.

A nightlight shimmered from a low fixture, illuminating the room slightly as to give it a dim feel. The man, hunkered over the crib lightly, crooned ever-so-quietly as he watched the Legend sleep.

"Aww .. Aren't you such a cute baby?"

"Quiet, you dunderhead!"

With a sharp smack to the noggin, the woman bent over the crib's edge and hoisted the baby up from her sleeping position. Hugging the sleeping child lightly, she slunk back to the open window and motioned for the man to follow.

"Put down that blanket, Hermes."

"But Nyyyyyx .. Won't the baby get coooold?"

Sighing, Nyx raised a hand to her head and massaged her temples lightly. Working with Hermes gave her the biggest migranes. She wondered why the boss had always picked him to be her partner -- probably had a grudge against her or something.

"I suppose, yes. Just take it. We've probably already woken up the dogs."

With a smile, Hermes retrieved the blanket from the crib and stuffed it ungracefully into his own side-pack. She had a soft spot for him, it was so easy to tell. Following after Nyx and the babe (ladies first, because he was such a polite gentleman), he climbed out the windowsill and down the ladder.

Mission accomplished. Like stealing candy from a baby, or more accurately; stealing a sleeping baby from a crib.

The arrival. part 2 of 11

"Ah, you're back." The figure looming in front of the doorway smiled, welcoming the two -- no, three -- that had just arrived at the bar's entrance.

"Yo, Hecate." Hermes struck a peace sign, then glanced up at the sign hanging overhead.

"Don't call me that!" The girl huffed, curls shifting as she stood to face the door. "I hate these codenames. Being named after a three-headed Greek goddess was kinda cool at first, but now it's just getting old."

"You'll wake our passenger." Nyx commented, stepping into the dim light shining overhead from an almost burned out lightbulb. It was turning a dark shade of yellow already, but it illuminated her features well enough; straight black hair which fell down to the waist accentuated the woman's dark mascara, and a pair of blue eyes shone beneath small spectacles. Her stilettoed boots made small thumps as she descended the stairs to the entrance of the hideout.

"You're so dramatic, Nyx," Sighed Hermes, following the slender woman through the door. He had, like Nyx, a lean body, though quite a muscular build. His ruffled brown hair was streaked with blue, and none of the persuers really quite knew whether it was intentional or just a dyeing mistake. His shoes matched his name well enough -- he wore a pair of blue sneakers with silver wings painted on the side.

Choosing to ignore Hermes' critical comment, Nyx stated coolly, "Let's get this girl upstairs already. It's too noisy for her to stay asleep downstairs, that's for sure."

Hermes nodded in response, opening the door for the ladies, as a true gentleman would do. Nyx nodded and headed upstairs, while Hecate walked toward the lounge. There was bound to be at least SOME excitement there. And if not, she could always relax with some mind-numbing television.

Closing the door behind them quietly (it was a secret hideout, so all of their movements had to be oh-so-sneaky), the slightly maternal Hermes followed the lady and the child upstairs -- she had forgotten the blanket.

The awakening. part 3 of 11

It was the blasting music that had woken the small Legend up. Infernal hip-hop blasting from downstairs, and at a time like this? Classical music and even the nightly channel-surfing she could handle, but hip-hop? She would have to give Kimiko a firm scolding in the morning.

A flutter of eyelids brushed the dream dust off of her eyes, and the Legend sat up, looking about her. It was unusually dark for the girl, because although she had woken up in the dark of night plenty of times before, she had never been without her trusty nightlight. The only illumination came from the slight crack in the door and the moonlight, throwing long shadows across the dark walls. Her eyes took a while to adjust, and even then, she could barely see through the dim light.

The truth hit the toddler square in the face after a few moments of silence -- she had been kidnapped! The unfamiliar room suddenly became soffocating, and Mayu was washed over in panic .. what would she do? Would she survive until Kimiko had found her?

Resisting the urge to cry, Mayu pushed away her blanket and rose, crawling down from the futon on which she had been sleeping. It was time to use her intuition, skills, and knowledge to escape ...

She was determined to make it out alive.

The room. part 4 of 11

Mayu paced around the room sullenly, pondering some devious plans of escape. Her kidnappers had not noticed her awakening, as sharp as they were -- they were downstairs, partying with the rest of the gang. Even the most solemn people deserved a little bit of rest and relaxation every night.

Tiny eyes scanned the dark room for tools, though she had to strain due to the still-unusual darkness. The walls were painted over with a cheerful light blue color, a bit unfitting for the current situation. To the eastern wall, a small futon was set, with a pair of cotton sheets laid over it. Mayu reserved that in the back of her mind, she was certain that it would be of use later.

A small ovate table and two chairs were set in the southwest corner, besides a window about three feet off the ground. A square rug was also spread over the laminate floor, covering most of the area of the small room.

Walking over to the neatly arranged table, Mayu made a futile attempt to climb up the chair, instead slipping and landing ungracefully upon her posterior. Her diaper cushioned the fall, and also muffled the sound so the partygoers downstairs could not hear. Not that they could hear; the music emanating from the stereo system was so loud, it nulled out any night noises -- and baby noises -- in a 30-yard radius.

A slippery velvet cushion had been placed upon the chair, making it near impossible for a baby to climb upon and stand. After a few more failed efforts to crawl upon the matted chair (though they were very well thought out), Mayu decided to direct her strengths elsewhere.

The window was too high to reach, Mayu had concluded, without a proper lift. The chair was too slippery, so the only place left to look was ... the hallway!

Dashing over to the slightly ajar door, Mayu peered through the crack and into the lit hallway. She had to wince a bit -- the light was overwhelming, especially after being in the dark for so long, but she saw the one key to escape at the far end.

A stepstool, small enough for a young Legend to hold and light enough to carry. It would give her just enough leverage to reach the windowsill, but there was a problem; it sat at the end of the hallway, conveniently next to the stairs.

What could she do? Mayu slunk to the floor and sat there quietly, pondering her possibilities. She could charge in and risk being caught, or sit there for the rest of the night. After a few more moments of silent pondering, she decided to go with the first plan.

The hallway. part 5 of 11

Now, the rational side of Mayu literally screamed at her to not take the chance, to quit now and wait in her comfy room until the feds found her, but the daredevil side of her did just the opposite.

Babbling in confusion, the toddler shook her head to clear the loud, angry, and intimidating voices clouding up her head. She would make the dash -- and she had to do it perfectly.

The voices downstairs had all but died down, and a slow bossanova beat sounded gently over the hushed morning sounds. The pursuers had all fallen to the gentle allure of sleep, leaving Mayu an easy way of escape. Well, not that easy -- a baby's pudgy hands could hardly open a latch, save turning a doorknob.

The toddler tiptoed into the hallway to the best of her ability, feety pajamas concealing her footsteps on the laminate floor. They were a tad bit slippery, having just been waxed. Passing doorway after open doorway, Mayu stopped at the end the hallway, bending over to pick up the small footstool .... and just happened to look to the left.

It was a casual glance, but the Legend's eyes widened in shock -- she released her hands from the stool and stepped into the dark room.

The sun peeked out from the horizon, illuminating the skies.

A thirst of knowledge. part 6 of 11

The overhead alarm clock beeped thrice quickly, jolting Kimiko from a lovely dream. It was oddly quiet ...

The sun was rising in the east, there was no time to waste. The black-haired girl slipped out of bed, and after a quick fumbling with the sheets, stepped out of the room impatiently.

There was forgotten knowledge to conquer.

She brushed her teeth rapidly and grabbed her jacket -- it was cold in the basement, even in the warmth of spring. Not bothering to even change out of her nightgown, the girl shuffled a few papers and her trusty journal off of her desk and made for the door.

Stopping at Mayu's room for a brief moment, Kimiko opened the door just a crack and peeked inside; it was silent.

'Must be sleeping.' She thought, and smiled. Skipping downstairs two-at-a-time, Kimi made note not to wake the Talaye snoozing in the living room. They deserved their rest.

Sliding into the kitchen to grab a bit of nourishment, the black-haired one chowed down her meal in a matter of seconds and slipped into the basement door. It was chilly, and the bubbling of chemicals comforted her as she stepped down the creaky stairs. Shelf after shelf of minerals, elements ... to her, they were ingredients. And the world was her stove.

The absence of Mayu had never registered in her mind; to her, the child was simply dozing off in her bed, and what right had she not be? The analog clock ticking away by the circles (they were laced with intricate details, taking Kimiko hours upon hours to draw) pinned upon the wall clearly showed it to be 7:00 in the morning, and one knew only businessmen and housewives were up at that time -- and one busy Kimiko.
