@Ninjer: I hope for your sake he doesn't join either, I know it would make me really sad if my significant other *if I actually had one* wanted to join.

yeah.. his dad was in the army and he was on the reserve so he's gonna try to do that.. I'm going to be starting college in the fall and I don't want to be on my toes the whole time worrying about him, granting our one year will be in October..

Is it true if you are like a full time student, they wont deport you to war until you finish college? Or is that part all bullshit?
It's true. One of my friends actually have that kind of contract and it's sad coz he's almost graduating which means he's gonna get shipped off next summer. sad

As for a somewhat 'less dangerous' field to get into, umm...you'd really have to talk to the recruiter (just make sure you cite some examples, in case they try to lie to you). I do, however, have a classmate that went straight to the army soon after HS, which was like 3 years ago, and he's military intelligence. He got shipped off to Germany, then Japan before being sent off to Afghanistan. 3nodding

As for your independence, sirrah, I don't think you should join the army just because your parents are telling you to be more independent and to provide for yourself. That is not the way to go, nor the mindset to get into. Talk to your parents first and look at all other options before making a final decision and when you do make that final decision, make sure that it is wholly your idea and you are aware of all the benefits and consequences that come along with the responsibility of your decision and be able to say 'Yea, I can live with that'. If your parents are expecting you to provide for yourself, ask them for a little help first. They've been providing it long enough, what's at least a year or so more whilst in college? Besides, you can also look at options provided by the schools you might wanna go to. Or you can look into the Co-op option when you fill out financial aid information. I'm sure there's work at school you can do without having to sacrifice a lot of yourself to gain that little bit of independence you're wanting and needing. 3nodding

the goo parts are that it will completly pay for your collage, and get you a really good job. ^_^

the bad part is that you have to get up early, you get yelled at ALOT by someone im pretty sure you could care ALOT less about. im pretty sure there are way worse things than that, i think a draft is the worst, but because we have so many voluteers to go into war i don't think they draft any more...

Yeah that's the good part if they do decide to go to college afterwards, if not just make a career out of it..

I wouldn't want someone yelling in my face, I'd probably yell back lol..

Ahh, good luck! My one friend is in the marines and he called me a few days ago telling me he totally regrets even joining.. But that's the marines for ya.. I would rather scrub the toilets and floors with my tooth brush than get yelled at, that's better punishment lol..

I'd personally rather get yelled at, I get it alot from my Mom's bf so I'm somewhat used to it sadly :/ although if I was in the army I'd either be really meak and take it or yell back, like I did with Mom's bf last night, because he's a jerk.

@Roxy: There are good points to the army no doubt about it but I'm not sure if the pro's outweigh the dangerous cons :/.
