((Funny thing is, I've recently found out that I'm very good at restraining people, even if they manage to bite me incredibly hard. I have a high pain tolerance, and I was able to hold down a friend of mine with one arm.))

He grinned. She was strong, but that collar was a hell of a good one.

"Too bad. Fifteen mill says that you're mine."

He raised his free hand, looking as if he were about to slap her across the face. Hard. He clenched his jaw and stared her straight in the eye...

And then he let go. Nikolai pushed her slightly in the act, but he took a few steps backward, then stood there. Cold. Seemingly emotionless.

The vampire stared at her a while longer, glancing briefly at the colors of her collar. He then about-faced, pivoting on the balls of his feet. "Go to your room," he said, tone unusually calm, but strained.

You make it up as you go along.
Why pretend that you're something that you're not?
I believe in you and always will,
Ever since you told me you're for real.

Inside, emotional mood swings soon collide.
Now gather up all your tenacity.
Take my hand 'cause I'm settin' you free!

Who cares who's there to stare
And tell you how to look?
I'm not even sure they know you by name.

Helorah's frame was tense and immobile, waiting for the blow so that she could absorb it and plow through. Her teeth were bared in a feral snarl, ready for anything. And then he backed off, and it was like dumping a bucket of ice water over her head. She quite literally gasped as her whole body let go of the tension all at once. Confusion followed the shock, followed by steel.

"No," she snapped as she straightened to full height again. Her arms shook slightly, but she flexed and loosened them out again. "Not until you tell me what the ******** that freak out was about."

And why you stopped, she continued, but she kept that to herself. One thing at a time, and something told her she was less likely to get that answer than the one she was already demanding. And that was a slim chance to begin with.

He wheeled around, eyes widening as he barely contained himself. "Do you want another little 'freak out' to happen?!" he snapped.

What was she doing? Sure, curiosity was a wonderful thing, not to mention a wonderful way to get killed. He figured she'd count her blessings and scurry up to a safe haven. Hadn't he thrown her off at all? Sure, he confused her with that last move... but hadn't he scared her with that all-too-real threat of losing something she obviously held dear?

"I don't allow others in this room," Nikolai sighed. "You have access to almost any room in the house, except for two bedrooms, a few art studios, and this piano room. Other art rooms you may visit as you please after my approval, but this is one area... This is mine, and only mine."

He huffed and looked away. "Now go, before I make you intimately acquainted with access to the cage, and let you know exactly how a vampire feeding with no soothing manipulation feels."

Helorah sighed irritably and tossed her hair back over her shoulders. She listened, quiet for once, but she hadn't lost her glare completely yet, especially after he'd whipped around again, causing her to flinch back into a slightly defensive tension. Not that she was scared of him.

This was how most of her first encounters with angry masters had gone. Minus the stopping. The others generally hadn't stopped until they'd beaten the s**t out of each other and neither was willing to manage to kill.

Except that once. Thinking to herself, she flicked her chin, and the X charm clanked again, ironically enough. Well, this had been a fun endeavour, but she had no real interest now. Her voiced question had been answered at least. The cage didn't sound too great either... Not that it intimidated her. There'd been many situations like that before. She waved a hand mildly off to her side and headed for the door.

"Try adding a bass line. There's more sound in the treble right now, and it's not as full," she suggested quietly as she slid into the hallway. Her voice was lighter but still untroubled, and as she stepped out, she picked up a possible harmony line in a hum, though several octaves higher than it should have been.

He sighed again, running his fingers through his hair. He wasn't all too sure about his mood right now, and he didn't want to risk getting only one day of use out of a several million dollar purchase. Yeah, let's go with that.

Nikolai thought he wanted to be alone, but when she left the room, something clawed at him. Loneliness? No, it couldn't be that... Just a need to be near someone. No, that's wasn't loneliness. He had different definitions.

"I forgot to ask, what room did you choose?" he asked telepathically, finding an excuse to talk to someone.

'Oh, that's creepy. You scared the ******** outta me,'
Helorah complained. She had fouled up her mood by stubbing her toe when his voice had made her jump in the silence of the corridors. She looked around before realizing she had no clue which way she was supposed to be going. Before, she'd been following the music. Now, she didn't know where to start.

Well, it gave her an excuse to reply back. After all, her legs and feet felt cold, being exposed to the air so much after so long, and her boots were still in that damned room.

'Uh, big white one with red shelves and a mirror at the head of the bed. Black and red pillows. ... Bed's super bouncy,' she added that last part as an afterthought, but it was part of the reason she had liked it.

Good choice, he thought to himself, remembering the location of that particular room. He had slept there a few times, but it seemed a little feminine to him. "Alright, I'll be right there," he replied through the link. Momentarily, he appeared in front of her, arms crossed over his chest. "Follow me," he ordered in a flat tone, stepping in the required direction.

Nikolai considered her previous suggestion of adding more bass to the piece. The vampire imagined the tones in his head; it worked. The problem was, it wasn't his piece to change. That was one of the few boundaries he actually respected. Shaking his head, he looked back to her, studying her face.

"Where did you learn about music?"

His tone had softened, curiosity making him more childlike, but his height and posture forced him to be ultimately an adult male.

Helorah's scent wafted behind him, and his jaw clenched. He was hungry. Nikolai doubted Helorah would be willing to feed him any time soon, but that was okay. He kept blood packs in the refrigerator. Ugh. He grimaced. Okay, so, it wasn't that okay. Those things were horrible. He much preferred fresh, warm blood. He loved the rhythm as the pulse forced more crimson liquid onto his tongue.

Nikolai shuddered. Too much damn temptation. Not only did her scent entice him, but let's face it: the girl wasn't ugly.

He needed to clear his thoughts.

Well, yeah, that was what piano time was for.

"Let me know if you get hungry," he sighed, unsure of when she had last eaten, but really more for the lack of conversation.

"You knew I was lost,"
she pointed out, her voice a statement, not a question. Helorah frowned, obviously having pieced together his ability, but she didn't like it any better the more she lingered on it. However, as this was obviously going to have to be something she remembered, she paid attention as they began to wind through the long corridors again, him in the lead. Her ear twitched when he spoke to her again, detecting none of the expected harshness or sarcasm she was so accustomed to.

"My people were very attached to music," she answered, not completely comfortable with the subject. Hel's pale lavender eyes stared at the floor, distant. "It's something that's pretty natural to me, ear and voice." She shrugged blandly, but still avoided looking up. Visions of fires, shadows, and the pulse of drums echoed through her mind; then, nothing.

Happy to seize something else to talk about, a small smile tugged at her lips in terms of eating. "I, uh... I don't really eat much," she told him, smirking. It wasn't clear why, but for some unknown reason, faerie kind had an extra edge in term of natural survival. Hunting was not always sufficient during winters months. Slowly, they had adapted to the ability to store and use energy over extended periods of time. She had to eat only as often as maybe once or twice a week. Jay had been feeding them constantly since she had arrived at the shop weeks ago, so she was definitely fine now. "So you won't have to worry about many alternate... eating habits."

"You predicted you would be," he countered, not really expecting anyone to know their way around his home this quickly.

"I see," he responded, nearing the destination. "I suppose I've made a good selection, then. Lots of music, not much need for food. Perfect."

As he reached the door, he nudged it open with his foot. Heh. The lock didn't work. He supposed the door might have been knocked at an angle on the hinges in some sort of... disagreement, some years before. It wasn't obvious to the naked eye, but it did affect how the door could be used. It would close, but the bolt wouldn't slip into the slot unless slammed or maneuvered properly. Heh. Fun.

"Your room, m'lady," he purred, pushing the door open the rest of the way and gesturing for her entry.

((I have a room with the same problem. The door wasn't aligned properly, so you have to slam it to lock it.))

"I do know myself better than anyone else,"
Helorah pointed out. She never did pay much attention to her surroundings, and therefore, it was easy to call that she would find herself lost and randomly pulling open doors just as she was before. As to his responses, she smirked again.

"Low maintenance. Makes it easier to convince people to leave me alone."
Her purple eyes glittered acidly, and she shook out her hair as her chin lifted again to its usual, high angle. She was quick to notice the way her opened door, and she frowned.

"One thousand and one rooms to this place, and I get the one with the door with compromised security."
She rolled her eyes. "It figures..."

"Just my luck, eh?"

He smirked, then shrugged his shoulders playfully. "It's not like a locked door would keep me out, anyway," he reminded her.

Low maintenance. Oh, right. They were talking about her eating habits. That meant food. Damn it! Hunger always had a way of reminding one of its presence. Oh. Perfect timing. His stomach growled.

That was kind of a rare occurrence, actually. Nikolai tried to play it off like nothing happened, but after a minute, he looked down and quirked an eyebrow at his abdomen. Of course, directly afterward, he returned to pretending to ignore it. His ebony eyes had developed a red rim around the iris, though, and that was a bit harder to hide.

"Which is, startlingly enough, not reassuring either," she sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes. Hel turned and stared at the bed for a moment, glancing down at her boots. She had left them discarded at the foot of the frame, long black leather limp and coiled in a pile. On the cold tile of the floor, she could feel the exact location of every thin string crisscrossed over her otherwise bare feet, unprotected completely by the wide-holed fishnets she loved so much.

When her eyes moved up the bed, she realized something startling, though. She felt tired. Usually, that came combined with hunger, meaning she was low on energy in general, since she didn't really sleep either. To feel weak for no particular reason was entirely odd. Her fingers reached up and glided lightly across the silver metal tight against her neck, and she grimaced; she could only guess where the feeling was coming from. Shrugging lightly, Hel pivoted around in a little twirl and flopped to a seat on the bed, cocking her head to look up at him.

He looked distracted, and she thought she heard him mumble something. Or maybe gurgle. But that was just weird. She looked him over, brows furrowed, and tried to see if there was something wrong-- as opportunities did otherwise rarely show themselves. Her keen eyes settled on his face, and one of her furrowed eyebrows lifted slightly, inquisitive.

"Your eyes are doing this weird thing," she pointed out lamely, lifting a hand and gesturing vaguely up at him.

Nikolai sighed.

"Yeah. The cause for that color change probably isn't too reassuring, either."

Looking her up and down, he raised an eyebrow. She looked tired. Damn. He didn't want the collar on her if it made her tired. That was no fun. He really didn't want her freaking out on him full blast, either. Aw... what the Hell...

The vampire stepped to her, placing a hand on the bed next to her, and the other under her chin. He lowered his face to hers, almost as if he were about to kiss her. A nice little click resounded as he undid the collar, pulling away from her after whispering a few words. "I'm giving you a chance. Don't blow it."

With that, he exited the room, making a beeline for the kitchen. He half hoped she would follow; she hadn't seen the rest of the house yet.

Helorah sat on the bed, either hand splayed out to her sides while she propped herself up. Her dark purple eyes watched him carefully, trying to understand what he meant by his answer, and he turned back to her, drawing closer than comfortable. Her nerves froze to ice, rigid and painfully aware of every motion, keenly his skin touching hers. She kept her gaze steadily in his eyes, almost daring him to come closer, and then he stopped, a short breath away from her face. It would have been so easy to just slide forward a little and close that distance...

Her eyes widened in surprise and fear of herself, but the resounding snap of her collar being unhooked chased away any errant thought she'd had before. A weight was lifted from her shoulders, but at the same time, she was buffeted by sights, sounds, and smells. The sensation was like she'd been sitting in a stuffy room for ages and had just now been able to step out into clean air. Her senses sharpened drastically; she could smell the sweetness of the wood under layers of paint, the brush of old dust on the shelves, some sort of fabric softener that imitated a fresh breeze with too much acid. Her eyes caught new shadows and wrinkles they hadn't before, as well as a shade of violet in her tumbling hair that she had nearly forgotten existed.

She heard his quiet reply like a clear echo in her head, and her eyes widened again. Her preoccupation with surprise delayed her hopping up to follow him, eyes dark with confusion again.

"You're trusting me...?" she asked, her expression dubious. "Even after your little episode a few minutes ago? Even though probably every sign tells you that you shouldn't?"

"I'm trusting you not to be stupid," he replied before he left, not bothering to shake the ivory strands from his eyes. "I don't want a rag doll. I prefer something a little more feisty. You were obviously not only restrained, but exhausted. That's absolutely no fun."

Double-timing down the halls, he smirked. Nikolai had confused her. That was pretty much his life mission: to confuse people. It was one of his talents and his passions.

Reaching the modernized kitchen, he headed for the refrigerator, lingering on the handle as he opened the door. Ugh... A, B, AB, O... what do I want today? None of these, really... They're all cold...
