T'ka looked over her cards with a 'why on Pern should I give a damn' sort of look. Numbers. She was forfeiting money on the offchance she would get desirable or favorable numbers. It seemed rather silly. She might not win an egg. But then again...Kyllae would never know. Wouldn't know that T'ka had taken the chance to win her favorite cousin a prize. Oh well.

T'ka slumped in her seat a little, even as she pressed forward her two cards to be discarded. Who knew if she was making a mistake or not? Whatever. It was all chance. On a basic level, she had the same sort of chance as anyone else. She pushed forward her bet, managing to look bored. She was quite good at that, having had a lot of practice.

Firyal looked at her hand and had a moment of panic in which she couldn't remember how the game was played. It had been a long time, and when she played with people in the Lower Caverns they tended to play for other prizes, or just for fun, and if someone made a mistake it was laughingly corrected. But as she looked at her cards and deliberated she found that she did remember how to play, and that her hand wasn't entirely miserable, though it wasn't the sort of hand to make her want to throw all her chits in.

It was too late to make it worth her while to try to fake a flat affect, and so she decided not to bother for this round. After all, there would be others, and she could only lose what money she'd brought with her, and she'd intended to spend that anyway, so there would be nothing to mourn if she lost. Well, Conomor would probably be pleased to see her lose, and there was a small, self-flagellating part of her self that agreed with him, but by and large she was unconcerned about losing or not. She wondered, though, what Numenor might be doing as she discarded two cards and added her ante.

When the cards came out, La went silent, though not an intense or vicious sort. It was more of a vaguely contemplative silence, the most unthreatening kind possible. While she wasn’t a particularly lucky gambler, she wasn’t a bad one, either, and her game face was generally both impassive and pleasant. It tended to catch people off guard, which was, as far as she could tell, an important aspect of gambling. And it gave her a better chance, even if she did tend to gamble more on the safe side. She scooped up the cards she had been given and regarded them with mild interest as she added her ante to the pile.

Her expression never changed, but for a vague quirk of one eyebrow as she considered her cards. After a few seconds' deliberation, she pursed her lips slightly. It didn't take long for her to make a decision, and she very quietly laid down her hand without even bothering to discard. "Fold," she said, flashing a bright smile at the other players in a way that suggested she was just as happy to be immediately out of the hand as she would have been to win it. An unorthodox way to start?

Yes, probably. But then again, perhaps it was all part of her strategy. The smile seemed to say so.

Ren brightened and showed the others gather a brief and satisfied smile as five cards were dealt his way, it was a sign enough that he had been accepted into the game, just in time as well. He wriggled himself into one of the spare seats and gathered the cards. Stacking them neatly before hand so that when he took them up the cards fanned out easily in his hand. He didn’t give away much, he just seemed a little nervous in general, jumping a little every time someone sighed or rustled their clothing in movement.

His hand was far from desirable really, and he didn’t stand much chance but that’s what this game was about right? A little risk now and then. Besides it might sound strange but a little risk that desired his attention and focus so often helped him calm his nervousness in crowds of any size so he plucked free two cards and slid them across to the disguarded pile. The fact that several of his fellow players had already folded only increased his chance of success.

He wondered if any of the others apart from Conomor and the girl were candidates and if It would cause any problems. He really hoped not but at least he had two there that were in the same boat as him if it did come down for it. Almost unconsciously he reached up and touch light fingers to the fading bruise under his fringe of dark hair. The main part of his mind and sight remained on the cards though. And of course the prize at the end.

F'sey waited patiently as each player decided their next move and "ante'd up", dealing them each their cards when they signaled to him. "One round of bets. It's at one point unless someone bumps it to two." The weyrlingmaster rather doubted anyone would bump it to two until the second round, but he'd keep those thoughts private. No use in stopping them if they really wanted to. After all, he'd already gotten all their marks. They just wanted his pretty little eggs.

While he waited, he swiveled around to pester C'ren, nudging the sleepy greenrider with his foot again. "Wake up. You deal the next hand. Earn your keep." A moment of silence. "If you ruin my cards, I'm going to kill you." All those turns of gambling had accumulated into quite a few marks, some of which had gone into the fine deck F'sey kept threatening everyone about. The workmanship was excellent and it would really be a bother to have to search out another deck if a certain roommate of his ruined them.

[[ OOC: Bets are due by 6 PM Sunday EST. If you don't post by then, we'll assume you just met the bet and your hand will be revealed by us if it's higher, and kept private if it's not. After all, hands that don't beat the highest hand shown on the table do not need to be shown.

Ferret will be starting this hand for me, since I will be at work. :3 At 6 PM EST (or whenever is convenient for him) he will deal your cards and timestamp the deal. ]]

Conomor raised his eyebrows very slightly as he inspected his cards. Okaaaaay. Could be worse. Could be a lot better, but could be worse. Shrugging internally - what did he have to lose? - he pulled a pair of cards out of his hand and pushed the across the table before adding his ante. Possibly he was going to regret that discard when he was handed the replacements, but you'd never get anywhere - in life or poker - without a bit of risk. Glancing about the table, Conomor settled more comfortably into his chair and relaxed. It was not feigned; he didn't really mind if he walked away today with only a lighter purse to show for the game. A flitt egg would be lovely of course, but he already had Gilden so not winning would hardly be the end of the world.

What was the cause of the mass exodus of the Harper Hall by so many apprentices? "To tell you the truth, there's no sure answer to that question, my friend, but rumor has it that a harper named Marko might be behind it... or at least he's looking into it." Oh, it wasn't nice of her to tease a colleague, but it was assuredly fun... and harmless. She knew very well that he wasn't responsible for the problem, but she didn't really have a better response. Journeyman Marko was, after all, the one who was trying to figure that out. Discretely looking her new cards over, she decided that for now she would simply ante up. Bets could be left for later, when she had a better feel for the situation. Sliding her ante out in front of her, she carefully placed the cards on the table face down in a nice, neat stack, and waited.

Nobody was raising the bet, which was just fine by Wei. She had a solid hand, but damn had it hurt when she'd discarded the wrong card. It seemed like everyone had called, though, so she laid out her hand....

10 Jack Queen Queen King

If only she'd discarded one of the queens instead of the nine! But that would be risky and needless, maybe. She didn't have a bad hand, at least.... just not a spectacular one.

Firyal watched with some dismay as the Starsmith who had expressed a concern about firelizards being used to cheat displayed her hand. Her own hand had been nothing spectacular, and it was unlikely that she would have won with it unless fate was particularly unkind to the other players, but the hand Wei presented was stunning. A part of her wondered whether Wei had been so concerned about cheating because she, herself, cheated but had not found a way to counter the advantage posed by a firelizard's assistance.

That was unfair, though, and Firyal dismissed the notion. Instead she followed suit and displayed her own, markedly less impressive hand, conceding that she had lost with a wry grin. She gave a quick congratulatory nod before turning her attention to C'ren, who would be dealing the next hand.

Ren saw the first hand that was laid on the table and knew he had loss, his own hand was only had the vaugest possiable chance of winning if all others were of equally poor quality and he had just ben shown that was note the case, in fact it was far from it and he had just lost a mark, but it was only the first game and he had to hold his head high and hope the next hand would favor him better.

As was required he lay his hand down on the table top,all low numbers. 2,3,3,4,8. really he should have known better than to expect a win with that he pushed his cards over to be taken back into the deck and shuffled again for the next round waiting patiently mentaly counting how many of his marks he could afford to loose knowing that his father proably wouldn't approve but mentaly hearing his brothers cheering him on.

---------

Edit:
Soon enough the next hand was dealt and he found again the gods of poker had not been overly kind but he had a semi decent hand that would serfice if everyone else was granted equaly poor luck.

This time he only disguarded one card back to the center of the table stroking his eyes of the remaining four with a blank slightly nervous expression, bt it was pretty much the same expression he always had.

Conomor chuckled softly to himself, and cast his similarly pathetic hand down with a slight shake of his head. "I had noticed a lot of harpers coming in," he commented after a moment, "a lot of apprentices in general, and a lot of journeymen... Who knows why, but they seem to be coming to the Weyr in droves." There was as much potential in any apprentice as there was in any holder or weyrbrat but... well, there weren't usually so many!

Usually it was sons and daughters from holds here and there about the land that made up the bulk of candidates. Now it seemed that everywhere he turned there was a skilled young man or woman greeting him. Or not greeting him of late, but still! One had to wonder what would become of the crafts in a few turns... if the thread didn't arrive soon, people would begin to complain. It would come soon though, he was sure, and when it did it wouldn't matter who anyone had been before they Impressed. They would be riders all, fighting that silver menace. He hoped to be one of them, hoped it desperately.

Calling himself back to the present, Conomor looked over at C'ren, and pulled his cards toward himself as the rider dealt them out. Inspecting his hand, Conomor gave another faint smile and set two cards back on the table, shoving his ante in again as he did so. Could be worse. Not much, but it could be and given that he was having fun, who cared?

Firyal had to stop herself from wincing as she received her next hand. Logic told her it was unlikely anyone would have a hand worse than hers, but she decided to ante up anyway, in hopes that she could bluff her way into winning. It would be easier to bluff, of course, if she was better at the game, but since she wasn't, she turned what had started out as the beginnings of a grimace into a self-assured grin. She also discarded two cards.

Oh - she'd been lucky after all! Pleased, Wei collected her winnings for her pair of lucky ladies. She wondered if she ought to tone down her smirk a notch or two, just to be polite - but it was just a friendly game, after all, there was no reason she couldn't act pleased about getting her token win!

Anteing up for the next round, it was obvious that Wei was now taking the game very seriously. She scrutinized her cards as she received them, fussing over their order in her hand, pulling them in a little closer to her chest then she did before. She wasn't just tossing down a mark to have fun now, after all; she was in the running!

This time, she picked out two cards and laid them down. One of her toes itched to tap; she stifled it by scratching the back of one leg instead, then securely planting her feet. Her face was anything but relaxed as she took in the other players, trying to guess what their hands must be like.

Kytara watched as the first hand finished out and nodded to Wei in an attempt to congratulate her. She looked at her second hand with a little more enthusiasm. She was beginning to understand. She pushed three cards back and shook her head. With some confidence she pushed in her ante, ready to ride this hand out all the way.
