“Good man,” Mal said with a nod. If he thought he had offended Veyes in any way, shape, or form, he didn’t show it. “That’s, more or less, the thoughts of Harper Hall too. Unless you’re involved in it, it’s none of your business.” Oh, so Veyes’ father was phobic, eh? Mal tucked that little tidbit of information away in his mind, because it might become useful one day. Probably not, but you just never knew. It seemed a bit odd that a phobic man would allow his son’s hair to grow out all girly-like but, eh. People were strange. It was like the saying: People were people everywhere, even if the people being talked about weren’t exactly the type of people that people who said things like that thought of as people.
Upon retrospect, there was probably a neater way to say this. Well, there would be time to think about it tomorrow when he was mucking out the latrines. “Clearly, you haven’t met Greenrider F’sey or Greenrider C’ren yet. Grumpiest pair I’ve ever met. Well, I say ‘met’, but really it’s just more rumors.” Although these ones, he was certain, held a grain of truth in them. A big grain. Like the size of a head.
Aha! So that was Veyes’ lever, the hope of seeing things long past. Well, Mal could handle that. “Out of curiosity, how will you handle all of that plus being a dragonrider? ‘Cos you are going to Impress, right? Don’t know about any ancient civilizations. We’ve always been here. Us and the dragons.”
A noise from the floor made Mal add, a bit belatedly, “And the firelizards. But I bet there are some lost Holds and stuff somewhere. Maybe a few minor Holds or cotholds that didn’t make it through the last Pass and have been forgotten.” That seemed plausible to him, but also slightly more boring than long-forgotten civilizations resting for eternity under the life above.
“So, really… to get a girl to get her clothes off, all one has to do is wave around a slate and some charcoal. She’ll think you’re an artist.” For guys, you just had to voice the ‘request’ as a dare, but Mal didn’t mention that. Veyes was apparently just fine with at least insinuating things, but the older Candidate liked his privacy.

"I haven't met F'sen or C'ren so I could say what I think of them. Really, I haven't met many in the Weyr. But my green rider friend, L'thor isn't what I would call grumpy. He's more...energetic maybe mouthy at times but I can't call that grumpy. He's a good man in my opinion." he answered and scratched his head. He really hadn't gotten around much in the Weyr; Mal seemed to know a lot more people than he did. In some ways, that might be in his benefit considering the situation as of late but he wasn't sure. People were fickle...unfortunately.
"I plan on being involved one day. And as for handling it all, I know that riders have duties but they do more than just do wing formations all day long. With a dragon, I could survey lands below and start looking for indications of other places. I hope I will impress...I think about my future lifemate often but no matter how much I dream about it; I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket."
He stretched for a moment in his bed then yawned just a little, "Well there has to be something out there...our beginnings. Things that we just haven't learned yet. Maybe we have always been here but maybe there is more to it than that. I wouldn't mind seeking it out. That's a big dream of mine; however, I suppose if I impress my dreams and my lifemate's will have to balance out." He smiled thoughtfully and tapped his fingers on the edge of the bed wondering with a small bit of impatience when that day might come for him.
But then he glance down and peered at the floor as the sound of a small body scuttled around under the cot and all he could see was peeping eyes and the brief gleam of the marble. He grinned and looked back up...well at least Mal's flit was quite entertaining. They really were quite a pair! "Guess so. But I think my drawing skills would get me slapped. And I doubt of the two girls who talk to me, they'd just undress for a sketch." He chuckled some thinking about Firyal and Hanya. He knew Firyal would have had a special remark for that although he had to wonder what Hanya might have thought. She...was rather flirtatious and maybe with the right words...well maybe not.
"So was Harper your first hope for a path in life? Did you ever dream about being a dragon rider or was the search a surprise. With as many people being brought in from the craft halls from searches; I wonder if the Weyr is looking for specialized folks to impress. I kind of feel lucky to be here since I've not met any former farmers." He figured to take the conversation away from himself as he already felt like I had talked more than he normally spoke with anyone which was rather surprising but he always seemed to be ok with one on one conversations. It didnt' make him nearly as nervous.

Uh-huh. Mal gave Veyes A Look that fully justified the capital letter. How could you NOT meet people in this Weyr? You could hardly walk outside a room without being run over. And the Candidate classes were always packed, unless there was some sickness floating about. Clearly, Veyes was just trying to avoid people. Not that Mal could blame him, all things considered. But, hey. People had short attention spans. In a few weeks, they wouldn’t even remember the whole incident.
As Veyes continued to chatter on blithely about his dreams, Mal listened with half an ear. Now he just wanted to sleep, honestly, but he felt like he ought to be polite enough to listen. The real tricky part, he figured, would be taking the marble away from Aeron; if he didn’t, the sharding thing would roll around all night and make far too much noise, unless Aeron got tired of it. But there were some things that the Bronze never tired of.
“What? No, no. Harpering wasn’t really my dream. It was just something to fill up the gaps. Being Searched was a big surprise.” But a very welcome one, all things considered. Mal had a knack for escaping situations juuuust before they got ugly. It didn’t always work, of course, but it worked often enough. “Well! I’m going to go to bed, alright?”
It was voiced like a question, but it wasn’t one. Without waiting for a confirmation, Mal pulled off his shirt and pants. Ista was a warm place; no one slept with clothes on. Besides, he didn’t have anything to be embarrassed of. Shame was something that happened to other people.”

Veyes eyes drifted as he realized with Mal's words it was indeed getting late. "Ah...yeah...go ahead. I'll stay up for awhile then we can switch. Sleep well, Mal." He didn't really watch when Mal stripped giving his new roommate the semblance of privacy even though it didn't bother him as much as it used to seeing others in the buff. The dorm didn't leave many things to the imagination with all these boys running around. Some sights good...others...well others he wished he hadn't seen at all.
Peeking down to the ground he spent the next few hours in the dark listening to Aeron roll the marble around on the floor. At least that noise was better than the drone of the evil snoring beast that resided in another alcove. But there had been a little fortune in all this shifting around for roommates. The evil snoring beast MOVED! Veyes really didn't care where that candidate had moved; he was just thankful that maybe tonight would be a quiet one of many in the future.
