Jezzibel Being self-taught, I don't really consider it practice... ..just noodling around 24/7. Y'know? I know exactly what you mean. Well, not exactly with bass, but with other instruments.

Whenever I get a chance, really. Songs on my practice list include "Killers", "Powerslave", and "Running Free" by Iron Maiden, "Painkiller", "Breaking the Law", and "Turbo Lover" by Judas Priest, and (for the quirkiness of it) "Whip It" by Devo.

I play everyday, mainly because I'm in a band. We practice Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and weekends, and so on the off days I practice whatever, and work on writing and whatnot. It's cool though, because I love it. The hard thing is having a label-- you have to come out with songs by a deadline... wow.

For those of you who just noodle around, I would suggest actually developing a practice routine with scales, etc. I used to just noodle around for practice, but then I got serious about playing the bass and started practicing morefrequently with a structured routine, and I've improved soooo much since then.

Westfield Skanker Couldn't this just have been a question put in the bass thread? :\ Anywho.. I practice every day for about 30 minutes to a couple hours. I just play random songs that pop into my head and mess around and junk. Yea, I pretty much do that. But, I try and do scales at least once a week. But that usually doesn't turn out good, 'cuz my bass has frets that rattle... argh. Now, If I only had some $$$....

I usually practice for 1-2 hours, about 5-6 times a week. If I just learned something cool I might play for up to 4 hours. I start out with some scales, finger exercises and simple riffs, and then work my way up th the stuff I'm still learning. After I get tired of the harder stuff I usually go back to the easier stuff before I stop (my last 15 minutes is usually spent playing "Ramble On" sweatdrop ).
