Simia triumphantly trotted back to where she had left Lysander. She carried a dead rabbit in her mouth and the stinky gopher was curled up in her tail. It had been easy enough to kill; a kick bite to its throat had done it, but the thing really stunk, and Simia couldn't wait to rinse out her mouth when she got back to the river.
"I'm back," she called as she spotted Lysander.

Lysander smiled at Simia, "I see you found something to eat as well. Between the fish and what you caught we should have enough energy to begin our travels."
Lysander, knowing Simia didn't really like fish decided Simia should get to eat what she caught and he would eat what he caught. "Well since you caught them, it's only right you eat them. Fish is good for me."

Simia nodded with a grin. Our travels... I like the sound of that.
"Oh, no, that's alright," Simia gave a doubtful smile as she looked at the gopher, "Although I'll happily accept your generous offer of me getting the best thing we caught (because I LOVE rabbit) I think we can probably split the gopher, if you want. It tastes a little... greasy." Her grin returned, a bit wryly, "I mean, I've never eaten a gopher before, but just from carrying it in my mouth for a while... I can tell, it'll be an interesting experience."

Lysander chuckled and eyed the gopher, "I've never had it either so it will certainly be an interesting experience. I'll think I will start on the fish for now and try the gopher later."
He was enjoying his time with Simia. It was so different then when he was alone and hunting for himself and he was loving it. Having someone to enjoy a meal with was wonderful and he was hoping that they would be traveling together for a while, simply for the company.

"I'm going to try the gopher first," Simia decided reluctantly, "Not because I look forward to it so terrible much, but because if it's really hideously icky and disgusting, I can wash my mouth out in the river and then get rid of the aftertaste with the glorious, delicious rabbit of tastiness."
Simia hesitently nibbled at the half of the gopher that she had deemed her own. "Um... Wow," Simia said slowly, "That's... interesting... I was right, it's greasy, but... It's not ALL bad... It's kind of... Tangy. Must be the musk..." Simia burst out laughing a moment later. "S-sorry," she gasped for breath, "T-that last sentance struck me as funny. 'Must' and 'Musk'." Simia finally managed to stifle her giggles a moment or two later.

Lysander chuckled with Simia and decided to give it a try. It really was greasy but it wasn't the worst thing he had ever tasted, "Well I have certainly tasted worse things before, but I think I actually like the fish better though. It doesn't leave that greasy after taste with them."

"Yeah," Simia agreed thoughtfully, taking another bite of the gopher, "But... It's surprising. I thought it'd be horrible, but it's really not that bad. Maybe if one were to eat it on top of something... Like... Well, not fruit, but like... Mushed up nuts or something. Something dry, maybe?" She shrugged.
For a few moments she just continued to eat, rather thoughtfully.
"Lysander?" She began slowly, "Did you know your parents?"
She had no idea where the question had come from. It had just... arose out of nowhere...

Lysander nodded and thought for a second as he ate, "They raised me and taught me all that I know. It's because of them that I decided to travel. The loved each other so much and no matter what happened they had each other. I wanted that but there wasn't anyone were I was raised besides my parents since the plauge killed them. My parents were the only survivors from our pack."
Looking up from his fish, "What about you Simia?"

Simia had finished her half of the gopher and had moved on to the rabbit. She sighed, in bliss due to the non-greasy loveliness of the rabbit meat, before answering.
"I didn't know my parents, no. A pack found my egg and hatched it, and wanted me to stick around... But I refused. Especially since it was mostly guys in that pack, and it kind of seemed like they wanted to... expand the women and children numbers a bit?" Simia made a face. "I want a mate who wants me for me, not for what I can do for his pack."

"That's understandable, children shouldn't be had only to increase numbers, but because you want to share something wonderful with your mate. And then only when both are ready for them. It defeats the point if only one of the parents wants children."
Lysander saved some of the fish to eat after his part of the gopher so that it wasn't the last thing he tasted. "I met a few males like the type you described and I always wished they could meet my mother, I just know she would make them sing a different tune when she was through with them. "

Simia snorted with laughter as she took another bite of her rabbit. "I don't know... The older ones were all like, totally serious. I don't think I saw them crack a smile ONCE. And the younger ones? They were too busy showing off and trying to get me and the, like, TWO other girls in the pack to notice them. I'm pretty sure the only time they sang was when they got into some bad berries. And even then, I'm pretty sure it was the kind of song that you would NOT want to sing around a hatchling. I kind of blocked that part out though." Simia rolled her eyes in exasperation, then lay down with a frown. "Yeah... I got out of there as soon as I could..."

Lysander shook his head, "After mother was done with them, I'm sure they would wish they had only eaten bad berries. She was a lady most of the time but you wouldn't want to see her mad."
Laying down beside Simia, Lysander continued, "It's good you got out of there, a pack is supposed to be were you feel like you belong and are safe. It doesn't sound like that one was right for you."

"No, sir, it was most definitely not," Simia scowled as she swallowed the bite of rabbit she'd been eating. Rabbit was her favorite, but this piece had been tainted by the memories... A place where you felt like you belong, and were safe... That sounded nice, but where would Simia ever find someplace like that?
I already have found it. She realised in surprise, looking over at Lysander. She slowly took another bite of rabbit, pondering this...
"Lysander..." She took a deep breath... let it out... and-- "Do you think I'm a brat?" She blinked. That had SO not been what she was going to ask. But the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she really did want him to answer that particular question. Simia had certainly been called a brat enough times to occasionally believe it herself... Granted, most of the times she'd been called it, it had been right after she broke up with a guy, but still... DID Lysander think she was a brat?

Lysander looked toward Simia, surprise and confusion were clearly visible on his face, "Why would I think you were a brat? I'll admit I was confused about you when I first met you but having enjoyed spending the day with you, I don't think your a brat at all."
Out of all the question's Simia could have asked, this was the most confusing to him. To him, she was simply a female and he wasn't supposed to understand them completely, at least that's what his father always told him anyway.

Simia sighed in relief. Good. He didn't think she was a brat. She finished off the rabbit, licked her lips in satisfaction, and stretched out on the ground. She was more relaxed than she'd been in months.
"So, you said you had a pack? And your parents were the only survivors? What was that pack like? I assume not like my old pack," Simia made a face.
