Marty Nozz DarklingGlory Shaolin Kempo? Sounds an interesting mix, whats that about? Remember the movie "Karate Kid", y'know "wax on, wax off". Well, the people who wrote it did their history homework. There was a Miyagi and he travelled to China. There he learned Shaolin Kempo. When he returned, the art got fused with Okinawin Te. Karate originally translated to "China hand", but the Okinawins were rather proud, and altered the translation to "empty hand" as opposed to giving credit to the Chinese. Ha ... jupiter4000 DarklingGlory I think we're startin to get a nice collection of info in here now, whats peoples views on stickying it? Also, where's all the stuff on ninjitsu? eek wink we have more than enough people who take it in the guild. And would one of you karate types like to post a synopsis on the different types of karate? It confuses me, all those ryu's.... I think this should be stickied. This is excellent info. Great things you learn here. Would posting some martial arts books do also? That'd be great, as long as you credit your sources. Ok, well see how it goes and I'll sticky it in a few days

Marty Nozz If anyone has any "ancessors" in common, let me know. 3nodding Lots of familiar names....there's another one which I may well mangle the spelling horribly....Chotuko Kyan. I remember him as the 'chicken' man because he evidently tended to walk about with a rooster under his arm. There was a story about a confrontation between him and Motobu...I'd have to ask the resident historian about the details. I am told that our kata was confirmed by Izu Shimabuku (again spelling is questionable) when Shihan travelled to Okinawa years ago, so there is a relation there as well.

We had some discussion today about Kyan and Motobu...the renshi who knows the history was thinking that it was Shimabuku (not Izu) who carried his rooster around, but Shihan clarified that it was Kyan. Renshi Lowe is going to get me a copy of the lineage chart, if he can find it, but our system comes from Kyan through Shimibuku and then Miyagi.
