Lorna raised an eyebrow at the man, unaccostomed to such bluntness. She felt a bit flustered, but was determined not to lose her nerve now, not after she had already paid!
"We want to know what those guys in the coats were talking about, what they want, what they were planning." That sounded good. And natural. Definately not like a scared girl who was really regretting her impulsivness. Right?
Mike smiled, and Lorna felt reassured. If she had messed up, he would have kicked her or something.
She knew it was a sad day when she was relying on Mike's judgement instead of her own.

I dont want yours and you dont want mine. If you know anythin' you'll use what I'm about to tell you to stay out of the Searcher's way. I told 'em about some kid that's been pokin' up around the Old Guantomo Statue. You know the one in the park of the guy they say founded the city, thats the one. Apparently, the statue's commemorial plat has a clue to where a word lies. Thats what the kid said at least. The Horde got em and tortuered him. I was the last ta see him alive and he whispered those words to me like nobody else knew em. But I know that I ain't gonna get near em. Its Horde territory up there. The Searchers and their Evolutionist pals are probably going to strike within the next week...and the Horde is already sniffing up around there. Its going to be a battle." The man looked at the curtain as if trying to peer through it. "Is that all you wanted?"

Soft footsteps and the crunching of leaves were heard as Yume Ongaku entered the town of Mariwiss. A bag of corn cobs were slung over her shoulders, latest earnings from a farmer who needed help locating a huge badger that was eating all the chickens in his barn. This would be her meal for the next couple of days until she would use her word bearing powers to get more food.
Now that she had found the next town, on to step number one; find the nearest place of worship, and make sure to thank God for protecting her through her hard times of youth, running from the law.
Searching the horizon, Yume spotted a suitable looking church, indicated by the tall steeple with a cross portruding over the tops of the other buildings. She smiled. If it wasn't for her faith in God, she never would have been able to survive this long on her own.
The dark girl entered the chapel. Except for a nun praying in the corner by some candles, the place was deserted. This was to be expected, there wasn't usually worship services scheduled that day. She found a comfortable seat a good distance away from the nun but still close enough for them to be able to converse. She began her prayers, emptying her heart out to the Lord, thanking him for his kindness, and asking him to bless a certain couple she'd met who were having marriage problems.
"Ah, young girl...what art thou doing her?" Asked the nun suddenly. "Aren't you a little young to be by yourself?"
Yume finished and looked at the none kindly. She was asked this question so much that she by now had a standard answer. "It does not matter. The Lord will protect me if I am faithful."
The nun smiled back. "What a blessed girl you are. Do you have somewhere to stay tonight? I'd be happy to offer you a room, I have plenty that I lone out to needy travelers. I may even be able to feed you as well..."
"That's very kind of you." Yume replied. "Food won't be necessary..." She said, gesturing towards her bag of corn cobs. "But still, I couldn't take this offer for free. Is there any sort of service I could do for you?"
The nun thought for a moment, then noticed Yume's violin, tucked away in it's case. "I love the violin, perhaps you could serenade me with a song, dear child?"
Yume smiled even more kindly. "Yes, I would be pleased to do that for you. But it will have to wait until tonight, I have some business in town first."
"Alright, child." The nun replied, "Meet me back here tonight. ...Might I ask what your name is?"
"Yume." She replied. She seldum gave her last name, this meant revealing her family, who were Evolutionist higher-ups, and were looking for her. She considered for a moment, "Sister, might you by any chance be a Word Bearer?"
The nun was slightly shocked at this question. "Why yes. Why do you ask, child?"
"I need some information. I'm continually searching out words, and I would like to learn some very useful ones."
The nun sighed. "I do not know any of great value, I am afraid to say. But I can direct you to someone who does know where to find some good ones... His name is Jacko, he owns a tavern downtown. He sells information for a fee."
Yume was delighted, but didn't show it in a very enthusiastic way; she merrily remained calm and cool, maintaining that kind smile. "Thank you, kind Sister."
She got up, flipping back her long black hair and adjusting her glasses. As she hitched up her bag, grabbed her viloin, and turned to leave, the nun spoke again. "Oh, and dear child. Be sure to be extra careful, there are a lot of the wrong crowd in that place. They are quick to sin, and show little mercy."
Yume's expression turned serious, "Thank you for the warning, I'll be sure to be on my guard." And with that she left the chapel with a flip of sleak raven hair...

"Marlena? Her?" Jimmy let loose a small whistle and sat back in his chair, glad that he had asked. The woman known as Marlena, while high ranking and respected in the Horde, kept her personal life and dealings largely private. So private that it was suspicious and terribly, terribly tempting for Jimmy to pry into and learn about. He remembered that his uncle had dealings with Marlena before, and thought maybe he could direct Minya to the mystery woman through him.
"Well, I don't know how close I can get you to her, but I'm sure that I could get you a good start," Jimmy said. He paid no more mind to his drink, and in fact he looked about ready to jump out the door in his youthful enthusiasm. "Need a few more minutes here, or...?"

Minya felt as excited as Jimmy looked but a vision of Shilah's face reminded her to cautious. She leaned back, having started when Jimmy spoke of leaving. Raising a hnad in a stopping gesture she looked at him curiously. "Before we rush off together, you need to understand something. What I have for Marlena is for her alone. So, I need to know, what exactly you want for this help you are offering me?"
She leaned back, relaxing further into the chair. She would not move until she knew what he was after from her. Whether she would actually provide the exchange was another story, one that would end when she had confirmed his own information.

The streets became very mucky and dirty as Yume Ongaku approached the tavern. She noticed all sorts of strange looking people in this part of town, obviously the tavern she was going to wasn't the only place of business.
As Yume entered the tavern, she could only be seen because of the contrast between her pale skin and dark clothing and hair. She took a seat in the corner, deciding to keep a watchful eye about the place and observe before she interrogated the bartender.
A waitress came by and offered her a drink, and was quite irked to be ignored by Yume; this was Yume's method of getting people she didn't want to talk with to go away.
One person she observed was a woman in her twenties talking with a boy about Yume's age. She couldn't stand the sight of the boy's arrogant demeanor and so went on to other people. There were a decent amount of other people present, but non looked of any interest nor threat.
The place being as suspicious looking as it was, and since nobody was around, Yume decided to make use of the only word she knew; "Telaesthesia..." she quickly muttered. She was now able to see through the walls of the tavern, and saw that three other personages were in a back room conversing. I wonder what those three are talking about...

((SO sorry! I got really, really sick. Will be back full-time on Monday.)) Kai Karasurei "Oh, that be Searcher business, but if'n you be payin for it..." The man leaned closer."No names now ya here? The man looked at the curtain as if trying to peer through it. "Is that all you wanted?" Lorna smiled at the man. "Sounds good, unless there are any other tidbits you're hiding." She'd read that line in a spy book last week, and was glad she had a chance to use it.
As she let the information sink in, her heart sunk. All this trouble, all these people fighting and being tortured, for crying out loud, all over one word? Who knew what kind of power it held? Who even knew if the kid was right?
She wished silently that words had never been invented, and that people had to live their lives without such power. Not that she would give up her words, or stop her search for more. She had to live in this world, and hell if she was going to give up such an advantage.
She waited to see if the man could offer any more information.

"Not so little missy. I don't like to be all pushy like, ya know? I can get more money with only the right kinda information. Gotta know when enough is enough." The man sat back and looked around. "There is one thing I didnt tell them Searchers. I saw that same statue a long time ago before I got into all this Word business. I can't possible think of what the clue is....so you gonna have to look at it real good if you are dumb enough to try for it. And I suggest you do it real quick like. Remember now....you never saw me here." And with that, the man parted the curtain and left. His work down, he had figured he hung around long enough to call it quites. Through the parted curtain, Jacko glanced at the two with a blank expression, cleaning a mug with a questionably sanitary rag.

I have seen her operate, and you'd be careful digging into her. I know." She looked around, then back to him. "I have some papers, given to me by a Word Bearer. Let's see what we can find about Marlena, and maybe you can have them." She started towards the door.

Lorna realized it was probably time to leave the small, curtained room, so she grabbed Mike's hand and slowly, confidently headed out, smiling at Jacko as they passed. She was feeling a bit to shaky to walk all the way home, or even catch a cab, so she chose a seat near the door. Mike sat down across from her, a gleam in his eye.
"I've had enough of this impulsiveness for one day!" Lorna exclaimed quietly. Before Mike could protest, she continued. "We are not doing anything until we talk with someone from the Sanctum. They'll know what to do." She sighed, taking a deep breath.
"Lorn! You are such a square! C'mon!" Mike looked like he wanted to run all the way to that statue without stopping. Or thinking, apparently. She gave him a glare that made him calm down. He may have been older than she was, but she was a lot more sensible, and he knew it.
"Look, I need to calm my nerves. You go ahead and tell the Sanctum what we learned. I'll catch up with you later." She sighed again, relaxing only when he agreed and left, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek on his way out.
Looking around the den, she noticed a young, pale-faced girl with dark hair sitting a few seats away. The girl was obviously new in town, and that made Lorna suspicious. New Bearers were never good news. If the girl was a Bearer, that is. But then, why else would a girl like her be in a dive like this?

Yume noticed the three people from the back room come back into the main bar, one of which was staring at her. Yume decided to have fun with this, and proceeded to stare right back at her, vision peaking over the top of her glasses with her big brown eyes. She liked to amuse herself in this why, and it served people right for staring at her.
