The uncaring tone in Kane's voice did bother Verdauga slightly, but he could easily identify with this other adolescent. Both came from uncaring families, although while Kane had been abandoned, Verdauga had been forced to do his mother's dirty work to prove he was worthy.
"Well, y'sound like yer on th' right path, mate, wot with learnin' 'bout pack life an' all. Knowin' a wee bit too much, m'self, 'bout bein' top dog 'n wotnot. Rough ol' lot I came from. Thievin' 'n murderin' bunch, they was. Far from 'em, now, though, an' may fortune not smile on 'em." He replied with ease as he picked his way carefully through the underbrush. It wouldn't be long now and keeping up with chatting with this youngster helped to keep his mind focused on the task at hand, instead of the helixes that were calling for his blood.

Kane sighed with relief as they came upon the river. He could drink, wash his injury, and move on from here. The East was one of his least favorite places but it was better than being stuck with a riot of blood thirsty helixes hunting down the one who had just saved him. He put his bleeding leg in a shallow part of the cold river. It helped numb the pain and clean his wound. "You going to be able to make it across without help?" Kane asked, they would be parting ways from here but they were still both crossing the river. He wouldn't mind helping the helix as repayment for saving him.
The howls and general sounds of the hunting party sounded closer, probably at the bear trap he guessed. The lot likely smelled the blood and thought the worst. Probably thought Verdauga had put him in the trap. If they only knew...either way the mountains loomed close and high. The bamboo forests were thick and visible. Once he crossed this river he'd be safe. He'd better cross quickly though. Kane decided he wouldn't drink here after all, he'd wait to find water else where. This was no time to wait around.

"Ah'll be fine, so ah will. Take care an ah wish t'haste. Hope yer leg heals good an' all." He spoke hastily as his ears perked, catching the sounds of the hastily approaching mob of angry helixes.
They had to keep moving.
"Ah'll probably be in these parts fer a good while, y'bet. If yer e'er lookin' fer me, 'til be 'ere. G'd luck, Kane." He called, then swiftly plunged in the river. He certainly did have a harder time swimming than he did walking, so he wouldn't be able to do so long. He made a bee line across the deep river and stayed to the shallows, once he reached them, then made the hasty trek north, trying to throw the mob off of his scent.
It wasn't until he was far out of Kane's sight and that he had thrown his scent that he moved ashore permanently and slipped through the bamboo thickets of the Eastern territory.

Kane plunged in, fighting the current in his trek across the river. On the shoreline he headed south, away from the mountains and the criminal who had saved him. The bamboo thickets provided protection as he hid away from the mob. He kept limping away until the sounds of them were long gone....
