He disliked it when she did that. "Who made you hide like that?" Kai asked without thinking. Someone had to do that to her. Just the thought of someone hurting her that much made him want to kill them. How could they be that cruel to make such a beautiful mare doubt herself?

She flinched and her ability to speak was lost. In her mind, she knew he was just concerned for her, but at the same time, it felt as though she was being yelled at again.
The mare wanted to speak, wanted to tell him what had happened to her, but she couldn't. Her mouth would not form the words, even though she screamed them in her head.

A surge of protectiveness welled in his chest. Bring him whomever had done this to her and he'd kill them in a heartbeat. "Dusk..." He slid his head under hers, raising the mares head.

She squeezed her eyes shut and tried to calm herself down. Slowly her muscles uncoiled and relaxed. She was still silent for a long time before she could speak.
"I was... teased... as a foal... I... everytime I... spoke... the other foals... would laugh... some of... the older... ones yelled... when I spoke... too. You... you can't... tell anymore... but I got hit... a few times...too..." she told him, her eyes still shut tight. She focused on her words, blocking out the memories that threatened to take over.

The silence stretched for a bit. Kai fought down the murderous urge that joined the protective feeling. How dare they... "They're idiots." He almost growled it out. "All of them." If he had them before him he'd make them hurt.
"They were just jealous because they could never be as beautiful and smart as you are. That's why they did it."

Duskai flinched again as he just about growled. She took a few steps back and looked off to one side. She didn't speak, but fought the erge to run.
He is already too close! Run away! Lock him out! her survival side of her mind argued.
Let he closer! He can help you! the side that wanted her to open up argued back.
The mare didn't know which to listen to, and found herself caught in between.

"Dusk..." Kai took a few steps forward. "Don't let them run your life." His voice was no longer growling, but pleading. She shouldn't be locking herself up like this.
It was also not his decision to make for her, a voice poked. She could do with her life what she wanted to.

Duskai nodded, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes. "I know... I know... I know... I'm sorry... I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." the mare repeated like a montra. The voices stopped, neither one willing to deal with her crying.
She thought she had stopped crying... that she had stilled herself enought to not show weakness in front of others. She'd thought wrong it seemed. The mare's legs gave out and she collapsed to the ground.
"I can't... can't... can't... help it... Its... ingrained in me..." she added, still keeping her eyes as shut as possible. She didn't want to cry.... no, crying made bad things happen to her... lots of bad things...

There was no hesitation as he went to her side, immediately. Nosing her neck with a whuff before he laid down around her. "If you want to change it, you can. I will help you." His head rested on her shoulder, tail draped over her flanks.
When she felt better he would take her to his special spot.

There was a long stretch of silence, only broken by a few gasps of breath from the mare as she calmed herself down. She felt oddly safe with Kai next to, and liked the feeling.
"I want... to change it... I don't want... to be like this... my whole life..." she said after a while, once the tears had dried and her breathing was normal.
"Thank you Kai..."

"Then we will be successful." He nuzzled her dark pelt. One could only change if they wanted to. Together they would do it. "... I have another place to show you, later, after the sun has gone down." They had a few hours yet to get back on a stable ground.

She finally opened her eyes and looked at him best she could. She was curious about where he wanted to show her. "Okay. That's fine... I'd love that..." she said with a bit of a smile in her voice. Duskai leaned up against him some what, and fell silent. It was a content silence, rather than a fearful one.
She felt like she didn't need to be afraid of him.
