Dreizehn cackled as his heart broke again. That's right little songbird...cry. I'm a monster. Monster... Pink on red on black...on black...on black...All there was was black. Though he tried to loose himself in it, all he could see was her eyes. All he could see was her touch.

The trip to what passed as his dwelling was a short one, following the path of destruction in a ragged line that he'd followed just hours before. Faltering only a little, he followed it, followed it to the cave he'd resided in for so long now. It had once had a door, but doors never lasted long. Thoughtlessly, he dragged himself over the threshold. This time, he almost made it to the bed before collapsing.

The floor was so cool...so inviting against his heated skin. Maybe it would help him forget, help him forget her. A paw scraped against the rock, leaving jagged rips in it. Forget her, monster? No, can't forget the little songbird...Alexis...Alexis...You're better off without me. With that half-lucid thought, he fell asleep (or passed out?) where he'd fallen, not to wake until the morning.

Alexis stayed there rocking in the spot where he had left her for the majority of the night. After a while she had stopped whispering to the night, though the words constantly ran through her mind. Red on black... on pink... on black... on black...

Over time they developed more in her mind, further into her twisted torture she never failed to submerge herself in. Red on black... on pink.. on black... on black... in night... sweet... blissful black... red on black... on red... on black... gone... gone... forever gone.... Driezehn... gone... red on black... on pink on black... gone...

Stiffly she stood, her eyes glazed over and she didn't really see what or where she was headed. Not really at least. Mindlessly she moved, stiffly at first but her joints became better the longer she moved, the blind path that she followed.

Repeating those words again and again at a whisper to herself once more, as she walked along his torn path of distruction.

"Gone... gone... always gone..." she said as she finally reached what seemed as though to be the end of the path or start, it really didn't matter. She went and sat herself against the large rocks and continued to whisper to herself, until eventually she drifted herself off to sleep and slid sideways to curl up against the rocks arm wrapped around her knees and under her head.

It seemed like forever before Dreizehn's eyes opened, seeing little other than the light trickling in through the opening in the cave. For the briefest moment, they fluttered closed again as he groaned--his body ached all over, the various cuts and scrapes of the night he'd ignored so handily the night before making their presence known. With a grimace for his butchered paws, he slowly forced them under his shoulders, peeling himself up off the cold floor with some effort.

He grunted; in too many places, he'd stuck to the floor, and removing himself was one more grueling reminder of why he hated Halloween. Hated All Hallows Even. The last night in October. His birthday. He wished vehemently it had never come to pass on more than one occasion, the first of November regular among those days.

The world spun a little as he stood, and he barely caught the wall before he stumbled. Black...black on red...on pink? Someone else had been there. Someone else had been around for All Hallows eve, his black, bleak holiday. Little songbird...I hope you flew away. You're better off far away from here, little bird. Away from any cage he might put on her. The pain he felt wasn't in his various injuries then--he remembered their kiss well, as well as he hoped there wouldn't be another. He shook his head, nearly knocking himself over. Black on red on black on pink...Little songbird, fly away. He'd been so cruel to her, but what did she expect? He was a monster.

Looking at his paws, he could see the dried blood and dirt in them. Dimly, he knew he'd have to clean it before he did anything. Heaving a long suffering sigh, he turned, exiting his residence only to see...

"Alexis?"

At hearing her name she stirred slightly, eyes clenched slightly tighter and she curled up into a smaller ball while she mumbled almost in audioably, "black on red... Driezehn... gone..." Her small frame shivered slightly as if it were cold, despite the fact she was laying in the sunlights path on the warm island.

His heart wrenched. How long had she been out here?

"Ah, little songbird," he crooned, dropping down to his knees beside her. "I'm here, little bird. You were supposed to fly way home." Once, twice, he reached for her but pulled back, unsure of what to do. His hands shook with the need to do something for her; Dreizehn knew misery when he saw it.

"Shh, little bird," he said softly. Dammit, what do I do? Clenching his teeth, he forced himself forward, gathering her into his arms. Though his muscles screamed in protest, he knelt there by the rocks with her, wishing her misery away.

At his touch, at his warm embrace she seemed to become at ease, and soon she slowly stirred eyes fluttering open to look up into his.

"Driezehn?" She said softly, a question of doubt. Hoping, wishing that she hadn't truly teatered beyond a point of coming back, her mind having found a new way to torture her with a new found hallucination.

She reached up and gently touched his cheek, no this was truly real. She sat up then and before he could pull away, push her away again she threw his arms around his neck in an embrace.

"I thought you were gone.... alone... alone again..." she said into his shoulder.

Dreizehn exhaled a ragged breath at the way she said his name. Like she needed him. More...like she wanted him. She didn't know him. She didn't realize... But quite suddenly, that was okay. He stumbled back, falling back from his heels into the dirt when she threw her arms around his neck and he stifled a groan.

"You're not alone, little songbird," he murmured, resting his head on top of hers, closing his eyes for a moment. After a short pause, he wrapped his arms around her. That wasn't so bad. The feeling of having someone close to him wasn't bad, at all. He remembered why he'd needed it so long, craved it so long, and his grip tightened for a moment and he swallowed hard.

"Not alone," he said again, and it suddenly had new meaning. If she wasn't alone, maybe he wasn't alone either?

"Not alone..." she repeated softly as she held onto him and closed her eyes and rested her head on his chest, "not alone."

Those two simple words were like music to her ears, because for the first time she felt that maybe just maybe those words were true, not just some fabrication, not alone.

After a few moments she released him and sat up next to him, and smiled slightly. Looking over him she frowned slightly quirking her head to the side, "we should get those wounds cleaned up, beautiful creature, beautiful Driezehn." She said touching one of the many torn cuts that was starting to scab over from the night before.

"So much pain... need no more... Driezehn... beautiful Driezehn." She said in her sing song ways once again, the way she said beautiful Driezehn was such as if he was some precious treasure of hers that she'd discovered and never planned on letting go.

Despite the evenings rest, Dreizehn was still worn out from the night before. This time, he was stable enough to remember that this day was usually spent, half submerged in the creek not far from where he was now, trying to motivate himself to clean his wounds. Save his worthless life for another halloween of distruction.

This time...Beautiful Dreizehn? He couldn't believe it. But as long as she did, that was what mattered. That was what would keep her with him, for now. And perhaps later, after she'd changed her mind, he would keep her with him anyway. The sight of her, the sound of her voice reminding him that she'd once called him beautiful. Mine. His arms tightened posessively around her again before he stood.

"Little songbird," he murmured. "Come, little songbird." Carefully, he extended a battered paw to her. They'd make their way to the stream, and he would wash the smear of his blood off her face. Maybe. Mine. Though he heard the sound of her voice, he couldn't believe that she meant it, at least not for forever. But for now...yes, for now. For now, he could be hers, too.

She took his extended paw and stood when he beckoned her, and in that moment she determined that she would follow him forever, if he pushed her away she would find him again. He was hers and she was him. Forever.

She walked with him to the stream where he lead her, giving him support on the way, he had really done a number on himself the night before. But that destruction, that need, she knew the familiarity of it, she'd done it herself in her past. Always alone... no... not always... not now...

Dreizehn still wasn't entirely sure how to act around this girl, what to say. What to do. Uncertainty churned his stomach and kept him silent, and he couldn't help but wonder if he was going to do something wrong. Why wonder when the answer is yes? Yes, you're going to ******** this up. Yes, you're going to make a mistake. Yes, yes. But you've already decided to keep yer. Yes, he would keep her. He didn't realize she'd come to a similar conclusion herself.

At the edge of the creek, he found the place where a low outcropping of rock led into the water, where he could wade into the freezing flow. Though he loathed it, he dropped her hand, growling softly as he stepped into the water. Got to get clean. Can't die yet. Not yet. Last year, he'd wondered why he couldn't just die, but somehow, he'd stayed alive anyway. Some how, for some reason. This year...Little songbird, do you know? Do you know how quickly you can become so important to me? He didn't want to loose himself to the little songbird, but her bright eyes were infinitely better than loosing himself to the dark. Black on black? Pink on black on red on black...The monster and the little songbird.

When he'd made it into the water, he watched it turn pink around him, the remnants of the night before. His paws submerged just under the crystal clear surface, he could see the abrasions both from the trees and from his own claws. Black on black on black on red...Blood and darkness...blood and darkness. His claws jerked, almost a reflex as his eyes glazed over.

Beauiful Dreizehn, or Dreizehn the Monster? Dreizehn the beast? Dreizehn the shunned, the outcast, the violent, the insane...Black on black on red on black... He'd been Dreizehn the unstable for a lot longer than he'd been a 'beautiful creature.'

Alexis watched as he submerged himself into the stream, watched as the water turned pink around him from all his wounds, watched, watched, watched. Soon she followed him into the chilling stream and shivered, so cold.

Ignoring the sensation to get out of the stream she waded her way over to him and took one of his paws in her own. Carefully lightly she rubbed at his fur with her fingers to massage the caked on blood away from his fur and from his wounds.

"So cold... such pain... pain no more... beautiful creature..." she said in her sing song way softly as she looked up from his hand and looked up into his golden eyes.

Though his eyes were still vacant, it was as if they couldn't help but follow her as she waded into the stream with him, took his paw in hers. Helped him recover. Helped him live. "So cold..." he murmured, though he didn't seem to realize he parroted her words. The pain was there, always there, but feeling the contact of the little bird, his little songbird, was greater for once. Idly, he reached with his free paw to brush the side of her face, accidentally dripping her with the frigid water. He grimaced. Idiot. They were right. He wouldn't know what to do with a female even if there was one that would have him.

"Little songbird," he murmured, his eyes focusing again...on her, the anchor for his thoughts. His sanity. The paw she so diligently cleaned grabbed her wrist firmly, securely, as his other cradled her cheek the same way as it had the night before with one exception--need and security, tenderness and a promise...like iron. He wouldn't let her go now.

"Why didn't you fly away, little songbird? Fly away, fly away home..." He shook his head. Somewhere, somewhere he knew he wasn't making a lot of sense, but he knew that she'd understand. His songbird alone would understand. Mine. My songbird. My Alexis.

She leaned her head into his touch, and despite him holding her wrist still massaged at his fur where she could reach cleaning his fur.

"No home... alone... alone... forever... alone..." she said softly looking down at her hands then.

"Pink on black on black on red..." she looked up at him again, "now... just now... home..." she said in her sing song ways looking into his eyes with a soft smile and then leaned forward and gave him a soft kiss.

Once. Once Dreizehn's grip tightened on her wrist as she talked about being forever alone. Black on black and black on red...a monster in the darkness was always alone. But a pretty songbird? Why was she alone? He watched her closely, even as she kissed him. His heart beat again. Painfully. Bringing feeling back where he thought they had died long ago. Could one revive a flower that had died? Could one revive someone who was lost?

He hoped so.

Pink on black on black on red... Dreizehn and Alexis, the monster and the songbird. Her, locked in the cage of his need for companionship, and him tied to the anchor that kept him from the brink. From returning to the dark place from which he'd crawled, escaped.

"Ah, little songbird," he sighed against her lips. It was the first time that he'd spoken that didn't sound pained, forced or raspy. He didn't, couln't, relax completely. Was she safe around him? He looked down at her. Did she want to be? "My songbird, Alexis...songbird, you won't be alone."

Mine. Carefully, he used the paw already on her face to wipe the remnants of the night before off her fur. Pink on black on black on red...The monster and the songbird. There would be no bloodshed. He'd die first.
