Kane was very relieved to see Shadow and even more relieved that there appeared to be a way out. Then they weren't hunter furs after all! Thank goodness. There was still a chance for Nani to be rescued.

Kane looked up the trunk, forming a plan. Would Shadow do it to save Nani? It would mean him being above Shadow again, would he withstand that for her? He gave Shadow a serious look, issuing his order.

"Your older, let me stand on your back to help me climb up the trunk with Nani. The higher I get the less time spent carrying a weight almost matching mine, and the less chance of us falling or the trunk breaking. Then once we get out of this pit you carry her while I find us shelter. Then we warm her up, save her life." He said it loudly this time, combating the interfering sounds of the wind.

He wanted to close his ears to protect them from the cold wind by laying them flat against his head but he needed to hear Shadow so he kept them perked half way up.

Shadow waited for Kane's response, his tail flickering with impatience. By then, he had accepted Kane to know more about the snow then him and when the pup's expression turned serious, he pressed his ears forward, wondering what it could be. What he heard wasn't what he wanted and his frown deepened. He was sure he could support both of their weight. Nani was light and apparerntly Kane was just a bit heavier. Plus, both of his parents were strong helixes, especially his father whom he took after most. The wind raised in pitch and Shadow leaned his head across Nani's body to hear the last words. His expression set itself stubbornly. He'd already hurt his pride too many times today to this one pup and now he had to willingly let him climb up on his back? As if! They'd help Nani another way. He shook his head side to side, telling him with actions that he didn't accept. Then, his eyes landed on Nani. She looked so small there and helpless. Her white coat stood out from his dark one and that made her look even more small. She was breathing in ragged gasps and it looked like ice was forming on her thin pelt. His ears flattened as he got flashbacks of their time together. Just one look at her and he knew she wouldn't make it. Not here. Grudgingly, his raised his head so that his eyes met Kane's and he gave a breif nod. He used his warm tounge to lick Nani behind her ears, hoping to alert her of his prescence so she would stay awake longer. He looked at Kane again breifly before getting up and standing by the tree.

Nani felt tingly all over. She wasn't awake, she knew that much, but there was definitely a tingly sensation. Her heart was feeling heavy, and was almost painful. She was so very cold.... A sudden heat from one side caused her body to tremble weakly. What was that? It was so nice....

And then there was another one, and a welcoming scent to go with it. Shadow? Was that Shadow? It had to be. Nani quivered and shuddered on the snow covered earth, the ice frosting over her thin white pelt. She didn't have much under fur, after all, and so her temperature dropped very low very quickly. Nani tried to wake up, but it felt as though her eyes were frozen shut.

A warm tongue managed to rejuvanate her momentarily, and her ear gave a twitch, showing her saviours that she was in fact, still moderately alive, and possibly a little conscious...

With Shadow's agreement he scruffed the barely conscious Nani and walked over to Shadow climbing onto his back. He didn't think about dominance, not with this. He was glad that his advice and orders were helping but right now it wasn't about dominance over Shadow. It was all about helping Nani. He went on two legs, reaching as high as he could go, which wasn't easy. He carefully set his paws onto the wood of the trunk and tried to dig his claws in before putting weight on it and climbing as fast as the pup could safely do. He dragged her up the trunk with him, creaking sounds from the trunk alarmed him.

Was it going to break? Would they all be trapped? His neck was straining, though Nani was lighter than them she was still not much smaller than him. His head was bent to the side and he couldn't see very well in front of him. Only one eye was turned upward toward safety. Nani slipped off the trunk but stayed in Kane's jaws. She dangled in midair, held firmly by the stubborn northerner. Kane stiffened, not wanting them to fall, not now!

At last, salvation! His front paws met dirt and he half carried, half dragged her over the edge, the creaking stopped as he stepped off of it into the snow. Panting he squirmed underneath the pup, lifting her up on his back. His back was warmer than snow. He looked down over the edge of the pit. "Your turn, you can do it!"

Shadow twitched with impatience. It hadn't even passed a minute yet but... the small glimpse of Nani he had moments before kept flashing in his mind. She was so cold but looked so peaceful that he would have thought she was only sleeping. However, Kane's words, something instinctive inside of him, and plain old common sense told him that she wasn't just taking a nap under a pile of snow. He thought his saw her ear twitch but he was unsure and he shook the thought away. Kane was finally coming closer. He lowered his forepaws so that Kane wouldn't have a hard time climbing on top of him. He grunted when he raised his trembling legs higher, wanting to yell to Kane to HURRY THE HECK UP, except for the fact that he was busy concentrating on not falling. He stood for a few extra seconds when all of their weight left him, just in case, before lying down quickly. He might as well rest while he could. He tried to keep his eyes on them but that hurt his neck so he just looked down, trying to glance at them every once in a while. After a while, he heard Kane's call and, with much effort, he got on his paws and went on the log. Was it just him or was the world getting blurry? And... the snow... it didn't feel cold anymore. He nudged a lump of the soft powder, giggling. Why, he could just stay here for as long as he wanted to. he could call himself King and he would rule. The others would follow him because he was too powerful to feel cold from the snow with his short pelt. There, off to the side, was a messy lump that looked like Kane. He gave a tired growl at it, pouncing. Instead of landing on his paws, he let himself fall, feeling the snow build up on his chest as he slid a short distance. There, he thought to himself smugly. No more Kane. He shook the snow off himself, looking around again. What was he doing up? He was tired. Surely, a King could sleep whenever he pleased. He padded up to a lump, patting it several times. Just as he was about to curl up and rest for the rest of his life, the ice caught the light of the sun as the Earth revolved and it glinted a soft blue. Huh... that looked familiar. He sat, giving a shaky growl which sounded powerful to him in his pounding mind. Why did this blue look so familiar? Why didn't it leave? He just wanted to sleep! He scraped at it angrily, sending the snow flying. A chunk of it hit him right in the forehead and he fell back. He just laid there, staring up at the sky, the edges in a slight circular shape because of the pit he was in. He thought he saw the silhouette of a wolf's face and a dangling paw which looked kind of pink.... His closing eyes suddenly snapped open as he remembered. Nani! Yes, she was so close to being safe but he had wasted time by staying around here in his delusions. He shook himself, trying to rid himself of the snow's effects. He ran back wobbly towards the trunk and clambered on it, ignoring the lough creaks and snaps. Time... that was all that mattered now. Time. The trunk snapped and broke, falling into the pit just as he reached the edge. His forpaws clung desperatly to the ice, his back paws scraping in his feeble attempt to save himself.

((EDIT: Wow... was bigger than I expected. I need to learn how to make them into different paragraphs. Sorry if it kills your eyes! D8 ))

Kane waited for Shadow until he heard a giggle. What the heck? With a sinking heart he looked over the edge. The cold sickness had taken his mind and with Nani already in grave danger he couldn't risk going down there to help his other friend. He looked around desperately to find shelter within easy reach. There! In the distance he could see a cloud of steam, which usually meant hot springs. While getting wet would be dangerous perhaps the warm/hot steam plus his pelt would save Nani.

Suddenly he heard scrambling and looked back down the hole. He didn't expect much, but he was surprised. Shadow was at the edge trying to climb out! He walked over and gripped the pup's neck, pulling to help him make it to the top. Hope soared in his heart, he snapped out of it! They needed to get to that hot spring soon, he was going numb in the paws. He knew soon his limbs would be next and he needed them to get to safety.

Shadow, digging his small claws into the ice and using Kane's support to his advantage, managed to climb out of the hole. "Thanks." he panted. He couldn't feel much of his paws anymore, much less any other part of his body and he asked, "Where to next?" while brushing the rest of the snow off his back. As he was still a pup, he saw his life as being more important than others, and now he really was grateful to the white pup in front of him. Even if he still wanted to show him who was boss. He nosed Nani's limp form and a soft whine escaped him. He didn't want her to die. He licked her nose and nuzzled her once before stepping back to see what Kane would do.

Kane squinted, looking around. The problem with snow is that it looked different each year but he tried to remember all dens in an area. Neutral territory he hadn't been in long but he still knew a few close to here.

Thisss.. way. We need ta get to shelter." His speech slurred a bit from chattering teeth. He pushed through the snow towards a bundle of trees nearby. He could see the den, a pointy stone sticking out of the snow. The hole was buried with snow. He wondered if his paws would work.

Digging out a hole in the entrance with a numb limb he squeezed in with Nani, trying not to knock over the wall of snow. There was still enough room for Shadow, he gave a shuddering sigh of relief. "With all three in here and sssome ssssnow covering mosssst of the door it'll get warm from our body heat. We'll both need to work together to warm up Nani. Don't lick her, anything wet freezes. Just...cuddle. Keep her warm with our fur." Kane ordered encouragingly. The den already had an old dry grass flooring so he let Nani lay on that and pressed himself against her left side, fluffing his fur to gather as much heat as possible. Now they would get warm, and hopefully it wasn't too late for their friend.

Nani felt herself being laid down, and then an equally chilly body press against her side. Equally chilly, and yet.... Much warmer. But it wasn't Shadow. It must have been....

Kane. It's Kane, don't panic.... It's not that helix, Nani, don't worry... Nani shivered, and finally managed her eyes open, she felt a wave of nausea, but calmed herself as she leaned against Kane heavily, hiding her face in his fur. He smelt very outdoors-y.

"Sha...dow...?" she mumbled sleepily, looking to Kane as to where the other pup was. She'd be able to sleep if Shadow was there. A tiny whimper escaped her throat as she looked around for the black pup. She shivered a bit, feeling some of the ice on her pelt slowly melting, the water trickling through the strands of fur and onto her skin.

Shadow's eyes started closing as Kane looked around. He felt tired when it was very hot so, instinctively, his tounge lolled out and he panted. The sudden rush of cold air into his maw was surprising, and he almost fell back into the hole. Luckily, he only landed near the edge, and he got up as quickly as he could. His body was past shivering, and his short pup fur wasn't thick enough to fully protect him.

He cocked his head at Kane's words. The wind made it hard for him to hear, but when Kane started to walk away, he got the message and followed. Again, Kane was making an easy trail for him to cross, and he was holding Nani, too. The jealously and anger he felt warmed him up and he helped Kane dig the hole near the rock, trying to shove out more snow than the other. It didn't take long for his short burst of warmth to disappear.

He followed them in the snow cave, his ears flattening. He was used to wide, open places, and had never spent more than half a day in a cave. The small area they were in made him nervous, and he looked to Nani for comfort. Even though she had had a traumatizing past, he thought her brave, for she usually seemed that way when she was with him.

He nodded at Kane's words, still fearful of the cold air that had rushed into his mouth to speak, and feeling guilty since he had licked her nose and fur before. He didn't think she was frozen, though, and he was grateful for that. He went to her right side, trying to again prove his dominance now that they seemed to be safe for the moment. He fluffed out his fur, although he still seemed small in comparison to Kane, who had grown up in the cold Northernlands and thus had longer fur.

His ears pricked, brushing against the roof, and he sneered with jealousy when Nani turned away from him to lean against Kane. She was even burying her face in his fur! He smarted with shame, and he looked down, trying to scoot away subtly. He had been the last to get in, and so he was closest to the entrace. He stopped when she called. "I'm here." he said softly, crawling closer again when she whimpered. He whined hopefully, hoping that Nani had just went to Kane thinking Kane was him. He nuzzled her head, keeping himself from licking her cheek again.

Nani looked back with a chirr of relief, and moved in to lean againt him instead. This was a scent she was much more accustomed to. Something that she wanted to with for the rest of her life... She suddenly felt a pang in her heart. This was all her fault. She should have never left. She felt tears welling up in her chilled eyelids as she pressed into the pup.

"I'm sorry Shadow.... I'm so..rry.... I won't leave again.... I... I promise...." she cried weakly, her entire body trembling weakly. She just wanted to go home now. She was tired, and was gradually warming up, but she just wanted to be home. As she weeped, she delicately fell into a deep slumber.

Shadow fluffed up his chest fur proudly, nuzzling her affectionately. "It's okay." he murmured in her ear. "Everything's okay now." He watched her drift into the world of dreams, his eyes soft. But then a wind blew, and the howl that was created from the slight gap of their cave made him shiver, and a sort of anger bubbled up inside of him.

He looked around, at their predicament. The small cave, the cold snow, Kane's obvious dominance over himself, and his angry parents upon his return. It was all Nani's fault.

He wondered if her life had been worth all that had transpired upon their meeting. He knew she would probably have been killed if he had not found her first that faithful day. His ears flicked and he ran through the memoried that flooded his mind and his eyes grew soft again. Yes, he thought. Yes, she was worth his life, and much more. She had grown on him over their months together, and he couldn't imagine his life without her, just as when they had first met, he couldn't imagine life without his parents. It wasn't that he lacked imagination. It was just that such a thought was so unthinkable to him, he couldn't conjure up an image in his mind's eye.

Kane smelled the pheromones of anger from Shadow and felt a need to calm the situation or defend himself. He wasn't used to being so close to other helixes, especially ones that were mad at him. He took a minute to think about what he had done.

Was it the dominance thing? He thought a minute. Yes, she ran away because Shadow was play fighting with him. A northerner would have known better than to become separated but Nani was a southerner. He sighed softly, hearing her cry. He wasn't too good with emotions so he was glad Shadow was there to comfort her. Maybe it was good he had gone south to escape the mean northern packs. He had helped to save Nani. Then again, if it weren't for him would she have gotten in danger in the first place? With their lack of knowledge about snow and cold, it was very possible. There was no sure answer to his silent mental questions.

He wanted desperately to tell them he was happy to have met them, that he had had fun, at least for a little while, and that he was glad they were okay. His teachings as a northerner pup kept his mouth shut though. "If you want to switch places so I'm closer to the entrance I won't mind Shadow." He peered at the other male, looking over Nani's shoulder. "Once it warms up a little outside we can either find our way back where we started when we're better or just howl for your parents once the wind dies down." He suggested. "Either way I'll be out of your fur soon enough."
PostPosted: Wed Mar 04, 2009 6:18 pm

Shadow looked at Kane when he spoke, oblivious to the other's worrying thoughts, for he had been distracted with Nani. "That's fine." he said. "It's not that cold and I don't want to make Nani move." That was only partly true. What he really wanted was for Nani to wake up and think him a brave pup for defending her from the cold of the outside world. He considered her opinion of him important, and had often disobeyed his parents just to please her.

"We can look for our way I suppose." he said thoughtfully. At Kane's next words, he snorted, as if to say "Good riddance." However, he felt a strange sadness at the thought, too, for he had become used to the other even though they had spent less than a day together. He saw Kane as a rival, and he felt that he still needed to show the pup a thing or two. And he was still grateful that he had saved Nani's life.

"You can always stay you know." he said. "Nani will miss you."

Kane smiled at the small lie. "That's nice of you to say, even if it isn't true. Nani doesn't like me, left your side because of me. She likes you much more, I can tell. I know you don't like me either, Shadow. Although, I had a lot of fun while we rough housed. I hadn't played in a long time. However, I put you both in danger, and now that your safe I'll leave as soon as I can. For now I'll wait until Nani awakens again. I don't want to move her either or wake her up." Kane settled into a semi comfortable position and waited, relaxed. Instinct and experience made him too afraid to sleep, at least not yet. He did yawn though, curling his tail around his paws.
