Was Raven surprised by the volunteer? Not particularly. But she was curious to see how he would fare in his first attempt.

"Very well," she replied briskly. "The rest of you, watch. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for everyone involved. You, come stand in front of the class."

Before he was even there, she started to give her directions. "Close your eyes. In the future, you may not need to do this when reaching into your magic- helpful when you need to see what you are doing. For now, though, this will help you focus. Let your mind empty of all thought. Fall into yourself, deeper and deeper, until you feel you are as wholly within yourself as possible.

"Once there, you may see something, or feel something- a color, a shape, a sensation- that you have not noticed before. Or perhaps you have noticed, but dismissed it. There is power there, but it is untapped, untrained. Reach for it. Do not open your eyes, but tell me what you see."

Laial felt himself glad that he hadn't chosen to volunteer. He shrank in his seat a little, watching the rude boy where he stood in front of the class. He couldn't help being curious, though -- he kind of wanted to see what color his was. Still, he didn't want to try without being guided properly just in case he messed it up, so he held onto his pencil tightly.

Still, he wondered if he would be able to empty his mind when the time came. He certainly wasn't good at such things -- even when he was trying to sleep, his brain tended to keep yammering on. His grey brow creased in worry beneath the carroty strands of his hair.

Fleur watched the exercise intently, having been too nervous to volunteer himself just as the rest of the students - this part of his first class was where he drew a complete blank, and it made him pensive. Still, it did not seem to be so bad as he watched the volunteer and listened to the instructions - it sounded like hypnosis, but Fleur was reluctant to speak aloud the comparison since this instructor seemed to be rather...well, strict with how she viewed things.

Kliken found himself wondering if he should write down the instructions that the teacher was giving to the other boy but decided against it. He didn't want for his pen to make any sounds that might be bothersome when silence was what had been called for. He would be sure to write it down later he thought and watched with unblinking eyes to see what happened.

((Sorry for the late reply, guys. @-@ Life has been fun.))

Lian very much wanted to cross his arms over his chest and scowl at her when she started talking, but he wanted to see if this crap actually worked. It'd be kinda cool if it did but Lian knew from past experience, that if something looked too good to be true, it usually was.

"My name is Lian. I'm not a pet." 'You'. Peh. He hopped up as told and sauntered to the front and faced the class. Almost obediently, Lian closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He almost said something fully snarky but decided to try this instead. Once it was over, he could beast her out as long as he wanted - as long as he passed the class before hand.

It was hard to quiet his mind. It was always going going going going zoom, even when he was asleep. Lian wasn't sure if he knew how to quiet his mind, until he thought of his sister. Emi and her quiet. Silence finally fell into his mind, athough he could distantly hear Raven. When Lian got absorbed into something, he did it completely. There were no fifty percents for boys like Lian.

Kind of like falling asleep, he told himself, rather amused, as he felt his 'body' fall back and back and back into the darkness that was too warm to be scary and too deep to be onto his bed.

His lips twitched. If what he saw was real... it'd just be hilarious. In movies, when the hero saw things like this, he was going to die

"It's white. And ballish. But little ... like... A star, I guess. Not a crappy drawn star. A ball of white star, with the little fwoosh things," He wriggled his fingers to demonstrate, "Attatched to them. Like how people draw the sun. But it's not a sun."

Instead of the cocky loud voice from before, Lians tone was milder, more contemplative. He was trying!

Raven spared some attention to see if the other students were paying attention, and was pleased to see that they were. Most of her focus was on Lian, who balked at first, but seemed to be succeeding. Well, wonders would never cease.

"White, with rays- those are the 'fwoosh things' you mention, I believe." Raven's tone was no less condescending, but she spoke more softly, more carefully. "Interesting. Start to come back now, leaving the darkness. But try to bring that light with you. Do not let it escape. If you feel yourself losing it, slow down. This can be difficult the first time, but you are capable of doing it."

It seemed she may have a successful class after all.

Fleur continued to take notes as quickly as he could in the hopes that he could try this at home. None of the instructions she gave the other boy seemed as if they could be dangerous, so he saw no reason why he could not try it on his own outside of class where no one would be staring at him and making him feel self-conscious.

Lian's lip curled but it wasn't out of distaste for the teacher. She was more bearable than the melee teacher he had been to - augh. Just the thought made him angry but quickly, quickly, it was shoved away. THe last thing he needed was to get angry and, god forbid, make things explode or something.

Actually, no. That would have been pretty awesome indeed. Still, he wanted to pass this class. Melee was more fun (maybe, if he got a teacher that didn't suck) but if he was good at this then... yeah, he had to pass it.

So he screwed up his face and actually concentrated. The brightness didn't fade, although it had flickered when he was being angry, and almost unconciously Lian flexed his fingers. But then - then it kind of started to tingle. It tingled a lot. He made a small noise in the back of his throat as the feeling sparkled up his fingertips.

When he opened his eyes, he could see the light covering his fingers and over his palm - those 'fwoosh' tentacle things were dancing up like the wriggly things in caves, like little worms, and his eyes were wide as he stared. And started to giggle.

"PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one to see this! Please? I'm not psycho?"

Indeed, it seemed that this class would be more productive than she had given it credit for. Raven quickly put one hand behind her back and contorted it into a strange shape. If any students were to look carefully, they might notice a slight glow around that hand, and a similar shine along a seemingly mundane border of dark wood that circled the room. However, her attention was still on Lian.

"As I am not a trained psychiatrist, I choose not to pass judgment on your sanity," Raven said coolly. "However, if you are referring to the glow, that is to be expected. It means that you have properly called your magic into the physical world. Congratulations. Please hold it like that if you could for another moment or so. As long as you do not totally lose your focus, you will be fine."

Making sure he was in control of his power, Raven then opened her attention to the rest of the class. "Students- this includes you as well, sir," she added, looking back at Lian- "observe. Compare this demonstration to the one I provided you. What is the same, and what is different? And moreover, why?"

"It's not fizzling out like the one before..." Fleur murmured mostly to himself, his tail twitching in thought. Truthfully, he couldn't imagine why it wasn't. It's not as if Lian was telling it to do anything - or maybe he was? It was so difficult to tell.

Kliken's eyes widened as the other student brought forth the energy into his hand. He couldn't help but stare, even leaning forward slightly in his seat to get a better look at it. That was neat!

He turned his attention, reluctantly, from the display of power back to the teacher when she started to speak again. What was the same and what was different he thought to himself. He tapped his pen against his notebook in a thoughtful manner, "T-The color is d-different." He said, then tilted his head to the side as he watched it, "The way it... it m-moves too." As for her the second part of her question... why was it like that he seemed to be thinking on that.

He thought it might have something to do with what she'd said earlier about how everyone's magic was different in appearance.

Raven's ears were sharp enough to catch Fleur's comment, largely because the class mostly seemed too stunned to comment. "Correct, Mister Schlotkin. It did not "fizzle out" because..." Raven paused, and then almost begrudgingly continued, "because Mister Lian is focusing on drawing the power forth. Until magic is either released or given direction, as long as one is focused, it remains in its last form. This is rarely helpful, but for demonstration purposes, has its uses."

"As to the color, Mister Belladonna, it is different. A white aura is fairly common among novice magic users, as it indicates a balance. No singular element is more pronounced in Mister Lian's magical makeup. This isn't to say that some of you won't have colors, merely that this is not unexpected. It will be interesting to see which colors permeate your auras during your studies." Pausing again, Raven folded her arms. "The movement is important as well, but that has to do with magical patterns and wavelengths, and that subject is a bit complicated for this class. For now, merely take note of it."

On the whole, she was satisfied with the answers. "Are there any further observations? If not, let us continue."

This information was quickly jotted down. So Lian was, technically, doing something with it even if it was just concentrating. Then that meant it would fizzle and burst like the first demonstration when Lian's concentration broke. Fleur twitched his tail once he finished writing and looked up again, his ears perked up in fascination.

"So I'm good to go?" He clarified, fingers wriggling. With his attention wavering, the light did as well. Big eyes stared up over at Raven, a grin pulling out his mouth. "Does this mean I'm good at magic or something? Since I can do this? Or - see! It's staying! How cool is this?"

He beamed at the other kids in the class (especially the cute boy-girl-whatever), tail all apoof! behind him. "Can I sit down now? Need to write notes and junk or else I'll forget it all. What other colors are there? What does orange mean? Then I can match."

"Good to- never mind. Very well, you may sit. I would not want you to forget so quickly." Raven waved him offstage while she considered his questions. A couple of them were a bit juvenile, but some had merit.

A rush of energy filled Raven. This was a success, so she might as well treat it like one. "It means that you have followed directions, and certainly that you have aptitude. How much aptitude is difficult to tell from a demonstration such as that. Be content in knowing that not all young magic users succeed on their first try.

"There are as many colors as there are colors existing in the world, including some not visible to the human eye. It can be difficult to assign properties to each one, but a talented seer can often figure it out. Orange is fairly simple, as it has elements from yellow and red, which correspond to air and fire respectively. Orange, then, is what one would call a cooperative blend, since air feeds fire and helps it grow. An example of an uncooperative blend would be purple, which has elements from water and fire. However, this does not mean that it is any less powerful, only that the caster's properties are different."

Raven paused. "But perhaps this is enough for one class. I would not want to overwhelm you after your first demonstration."
