"You think he'd be upset if I called him Lucy? Nah, I better pass on that, I think I like my bones in one piece and my organs where they are."
Rory chuckled, knowing that no man in his right mind would ever enjoy that, nor would he ever have the backbone to actually do that to someone. He was a pacifist of some sort, always thinking violence wasn't needed unless it came down on him or his younger brother who seemed to be a walking punching bag.
If it wasn't for the fact Rory would never be here he had almost asking about letting his little brother come with him. It would mean a change of school, but then again Fineas probably needed a fresh new start anyway.
"As for the cake, go ahead and take the spring form off. It looks hard enough from here so ti shouldn't splatter around. Your fridge works pretty good little lady, you better be careful or you may just win me over without even trying."
He reached into a drawer and pulled out a plastic knife, one of those massively large ones used to cut pies or cakes, and he slid it across the counter towards Hiliare; he didn't have clean enough hands to move over and cut it himself since they were still covered with baker's flour. A quick rinse in the sink remedied that and the young man scooted over to Hil's side.
"Have at it."

"He doesn't like it much when I call him that, so I wouldn't recommend it." She chuckled as she lifted off the spring form and set it aside. The cake had turned out so nicely, she was almost drooling. She lifted the knife above the cake when she realized they were missing some of the most important things.
Hilaire stood and skipped over to a cupboard and pulled out two small plates. Likewise, she pulled two forks out of the drawer beneath. Now everything was complete. She put one plate in front of Rory, placing the fork beside it and her own in front of the stool. She took her place and cut two small pieces. She carefully placed one on each plate. Plunging her fork into the slice, she removed a small piece and lifted it to her mouth. She looked to Rory, smiled and popped it into her mouth. It was like heaven had taken place in her mouth, she closed her eyes and slipped into a small state of euphoria.

"I'd ask if it tastes good but your face seems to tell a better story then your mouth would. I'm glad."
Rory forked a bit into his own mouth and clamped down, the cold making his nose and tongue tingle for a moment before he could properly swallow. Considering how short he had let this sit in the time he'd been talking with Hilaire it came out really well and thus he was pleased with himself.
If he could make this girl next to him keep smiling like this then perhaps it would be worth living here. Not that he was attracted to her, nothing of that sort, but Rory wanted to be the type of man who could always bring smiles to peoples faces. He did two of his jobs for that reason, though the third one paid more of the bills.
"I'm glad you like it, but we gotta save a piece for Mr. Unsociable. I don't know if he'd like it or not but I still think it's best to leave some for him to try later. No one should get left out of the pie circuit."

Hilaire giggled slightly embarrassed. She felt stupid that she had let him see her like that, but it happened, and she couldn't take it back. It wasn't such a bad thing, just not something she normally did. She took another bite before she spoke. "Yeah, he'd probably get even more angry at me. Though I'm not really sure if that's possible."
Her smile faded as she recalled the reason for his behavior. However, she only knew the event, not his exact emotion on the subject. Hil had assumed it was anger or jealousy. But maybe she was wrong...
Today had been a bad day for her spacing out, and when she snapped back she gave a sheepish smile. "Sorry about that..I guess I have more on my mind than I thought."

"Forgive me for saying this but you've got a pretty expressive face and are getting several messages out there without using words. I bet you're not very good at poker."
Not that Rory was any good at it. Whenever he played cards it meant drinking was usually involved and lord knows the man couldn't handle alcohol and anything that required thinking together. It all usually ended...badly.
"It's okay to think too, you know. I'm sure with a house as big as this thinking is most of what you do when you're done exploring or cleaning. I wish I had more time to myself to think, actually, but since I work so much and go to school doing something like this is a rare treat for me."
Rory grinned and looked over at the bread, noting that it probably wouldn't rise and be ready for the oven any time soon, and he figured in that before he went to work tonight as his late shift it would be long since done. Maybe in another thirty or so minutes.
"So, how about you show me now where I'm going to be living? We can drop that pie off on the way and I can get a feel of the size of this place."

Hialire blushed. No one had told her anything like that before. "I wouldn't know...I've never played poker before."
Though this man was a stranger, Hil felt like she could trust him. She felt like he understood her, perhaps they were more similar than she had originally thought. "You must be careful with your thoughts. If you get too lost in them you lose sight of reality and miss out on a lot. I'd know, I did it for years."
Her past wasn't the brightest thing, and she wasn't a fan of thinking about it. She gave a 'Hmph', as she realized the irony of her being in the mansion. She was trying to run from her past, and here she was in a piece of it. Well, at least it wasn't a very big piece.
"Yeah, sure! Of course." Hilaire retrieved a new plate and fork, and placed a piece of the dessert on it. "First we'll take the pie to him, then to your room. Mine and his are right beside each other, so that way you'll know where I am if you need anything. And I mean that, anything at all."
She walked through the door she came through, up the stairs in the main entrance and turned right. The two sides mirrored each other, at least up to this point. She stopped at the first door on the right and knocked. She barely had time to lower her hand before Lucifer answered.
Lucifer had been reading at the time of the knock, and was slightly annoyed at the interruption. He'd expected it to be one of the maids, not Hilaire and her new friend. In the girls hand was a piece of pie. He looked at her with slight confusion. He had been incredibly cut off and rude lately, and yet she still brought him something?
"For you. Rory made it. It's very very good. We wanted you to try it too." Hilaire held out the plate, hoping he wouldn't shut the door in her face.
Lucifer took the plate slowly, unsure if this kindness had a hidden meaning. Only time would tell him that. "Err, thanks. I'll tell what I think about it later...I'm sure I'll be seeing you around."
With that he closed the door and returned to his chair. Sitting there Lucifer looked the pie over. He poked it with the fork and placed the piece attached to it in his mouth. His reaction was almost identical to Hilaire's. He would never admit to it though. "Heavenly..." he whispered.
Hilaire turned, walked down the stairs, across the landing and up the small flight before them. Just as she had said earlier, it was the first door on the right. She opened it and stepped aside. "You first."

"You should give it a shot - I can teach you how to play sometime, you and your other roomie."
Rory called this over Hilaire's shoulder as they walked the steps to drop of Lucifer's pie (he stayed out of sight for this) and make their way to the room he would be occupying. After the younger woman opened the door Rory took the lead and stepped inside the wide space.
The room was bare, neat, and Rory could see that the maids had been caring for it even though it was unoccupied. It wasn't too large or two small, but it had everything he would need, so essentially it was...perfect.
"This is much bigger and better than I had originally thought. Something like this will be perfect for someone like me. I've got my own furniture I can use and drag into here, so . . . "
His thoughts trailed for a moment before he turned back to face Hil, a smile on his lips.
"Pleased to be under your care, landlord Hilaire."

Hilaire couldn't help but giggle at the name. "I never thought I'd be called that in my lifetime. Then again, a lot of things have been happening that I never thought would. Oh! If you need help bringing your things here I'm sure I could ask someone."
She was glad that Rory was so happy already. He would help make this place brighter and less stuffy. Perhaps even spread the smell of fresh bread through out the mansion. That would be wonderful. It helped knowing there would be someone just down the hall to talk to. Hilaire was already feeling better about being there.

"There's no need to worry yourself over my stuff, I don't have much as it is. Being the oldest meant that when you outgrew it or couldn't use it anymore it simply went down the line to whoever stood beneath you. I think the only real possessions I have to my name are the clothes on my back and maybe a backpack at home. Everything else is tossed up."
Rory rubbed his right shoulder with his right hand, gently squeezing the muscle. It was starting to ache from all the digging he'd done earlier that morning for the funeral later this afternoon. Supposedly there had been a fire or something at a nursing home, or an explosion of some kind, and there where lots to be buried . . .
"I can probably snag a delivery for a futon or something on my way to work and bring it by once my shift is over - same for any type of other furniture. I may have to count on you though for suggestions on where to get other things...like clothing."
Rory's cheeks pinkened for a moment as he turned his glance to the side, almost like it was embarrassing to say stuff like this.
"I really don't know where to get things around here as my mom usually did all the shopping for the whole family, and Shelly went with her."

"Don't worry about clothing. I'll take care of that then. You'll have a nice dresser here for you when you get back." Hilaire was excited. She never imagined someone like him would answer the ad.
He was tall, pretty good looking, and he pulled off stubble well. Her cheeks slowly turned red. "Uhh...your bathroom is over there, it has a shower and tub.."
Her face grew brighter. She was thinking of things she shouldn't be.

Uwa,...her face is just like a tomato.
The color of Rory's cheeks seemed to raise to match hers, only because it was almost too natural for the man to get just as flustered as those around him. His mother and sister used to mock him for it because his face would be as russet as his hair by the time his blush reached its peak, and Rory rubbed the back of his hand over his nose to try and calm it.
"Are the shower and tub connected or separate?"
Rory took a few steps towards the direction Hilaire had indicated, poking his head inside to get a look around. There was a large mirror over the sink, one that showed his whole frame, and the man had to shake his head at the sight of his appearance. Disheveled, covered in dirt - a complete mess, in other words.
"Man, I wish you'd told me I looked so rugged. I'm surprised you didn't run away and slam the door as soon as you got one look at me."

She wasn't going to tell him she found it very attractive. "Uh, I think that one is a combined one."
Hil walked to where he was, slightly peeking around the corner of the door. She was still blushing. Meekly she spoke. "I don't mind it at all. Besides, it'd be rude to judge you only by your appearance."

"Wow, to think I'll be able to take a bath in peace for once. You've got try and understand what it's like to always have someone in the bathroom with you. If I wasn't taking a bath the same time as Fineas it was with Tristan - even my dad or uncle sometimes. Man, I shudder at the memories."
Rory did visibly shudder, though it was more of a comical one then one made from a horrible memory. He turned and grinned at her when she drew closer to his side, though he had to remind himself not to act stupid when he noticed she was still so red. Had his question about clothing affected her that much?
"You're a good person, you know that? Most people would take one look at me, ask me my occupation, and then either laugh in my face or insult me. You haven't done either, but then again you haven't asked me anything about me as well."

Hilaire couldn't even imagine going through that. She definitely wasn't going to try. She couldn't help but laugh at his shudder. When she saw the grin, it didn't help her blushing stop. She was starting to really like this guy, which isn't something that happened often.
"I'm not that great..." Hil was always hard on herself, and she really didn't see herself as a good person. Could a sin be a good person? "Well, tell me about yourself then Rory."

"I don't mind sharing, but it has to be a fair trade. One thing about me for one thing about you. First I guess I can tell you my age....I'm twenty-six. Turning twenty-seven in about three weeks. Now it's your turn."
Rory wondered if telling his age would freak this young woman out and away from him, but since he already told her he wouldn't be around much anyway he figured that at least might make her feel somewhat safe.
