If I might take the stand for a moment friends, Romans and countrymen..

I do not see this as a bad thing. True, your arguments do have merit that it might attract 'the wrong sort', but so what? What harm will they do?
In my travels across the Aetherwebs I have seen many strange and wonderful things in regards to steampunk, but one of them is the community's most wonderful grasp of manners and respect for others.

And why not? The period we wish to emulate was famous for it's manners and etiquette! So, what is to say that when some grubbly street child decides they wish to be cool and investigate steampunk.. They will be exposed to all manner of wonderful things that should be a positive effect on their personalities.

The importance of literacy and gentlemanly (or ladylike) conduct, SCIENCE!, technology, history, unbridled creativity.
If Doctor Steel is to bring the Utopian Playland to the masses we mus-
I'm sorry what?

Anyway.
Personally I don't see it as a bad thing. Obviously you will get the odd pseudo-troll but this could be a very good thing for the impressionable youth of today. Can you see a bunch of steampunk hanging around in a shopping centre being all moody and shifty and scaring old people? Preposterous!
It's most certainly not cricket. ._Q

I for one would also enjoy ease of access to more steampunk clothes and accessories. True, it would not be as nice as making my own garments, but that's always been the case though hasn't it? I probably wouldn't 'buy' any of the clothes unless they were *really* good, but I certainly wouldn't mind picking up a accessory or two!

As the community grows, as any community grows.. It's certain to attract a certain number of.. Nefarious characters.. But I feel that the benefits much outweigh the gains.

All hail Doctor Steel. stare

I was just pondering this and came across an image of a bunch of tweens in heavy eyeliner comparing brass wings outside of hottopic... My brain momentarily shut down.

Alright, lapse in brain functioning over. I doubt the MTV crowd will buy into our subculture. Brown and brass aren't really the colors of youth in most people's opinions, and the style requires more effort than most people are willing to give.

I see the possibilty of growth within steampunk, but not through the outlet of MTV. Anime has been increasingly picking up on the genre, Last Exile, ect... And ever more books are being published. I see this as good growth. It is the type of growth that expands into our already founded target audiance, those who enjoy history specials, who get excited during certian units of our AP history classes when we know more than the teacher. These people will do their research and be loyal to the effort it takes to be steampunk.

As stated earlier, bad costumes will happen. It is inevitable that people will grab a pair of swim/ski goggles and proclaim themselves steampunk occasionaly, but those people probably wont continue to do so for more than a few hours. Costuming, and truely dressing in a certian style are two entirely different cups of tea. Goth has horrid costumes that are sold on a regular basis at Hot Topic at halloween stores a few months out of the year, but those who purchase and wear such costumes are not considered Goth. Such a distinction will just have to be drawn with Steampunk, and the costumes should be smiled upon as fun, but not taken seriously as an affront to the quality of the subculture.

Even if it did get picked up by the mainstreame it would never be authentic Steampunk. Those tweens that would pick up on it, most of them would do it just for the clothes and not bother to reseach what it actually is.
I have to agree

Kind of like me then! HOHOHO!
I'm hardly a 'true' steampunk. I have bought all my clothes, my goggles look like swimming goggles, I can't sew to save my life, I find science very boring, I also find it very hard to read 19th century books.
The only steampunk culture I've ever been exposed too is through television, movies and comic books.
But despite all that, I'm nice! ._.; And I'm not despoiling your community! D=

I think it would be a good thing if steampunk went 'mainstream'. It could bring alot of good to alot of people's lives.
But personally though, I don't think it'll ever really get the kind of high-street shop acceptance the people here are talking about. It'll certainly weather the test of time, but I doubt we'll be seeing it in Hot Topic. =P

Meh. Steampunk's a thing of the past anyway. I mean, its so late-1800s.
Good show, old bean! Quite the jest, I must say.

I think it won't really make an impact in the true mainstream culture. Sure movies and stuff will be effected, if they are as steampunk movie, but that's it.
It's been around for a while, and as a pretty hardcore fanbase. You can't really be "kiddy steampunk" like you can be kiddy goth.
It's nice to have the notice, but I doubt people will jump at it because of that small 3 minute segement.
They showed a clockwork heart and a convention of gothed out victorian sci fi nerds, nothing the little preps and mall goths are going to jump to join.

I used to think that too, but after seeing the shirts at thinkgeek (they made a ladies sized one too since their mens one was doing so well) I'm starting to wonder if it's more viable than we think.

I just looked up thinkgeek.com and found the shirt you were talking about.
My first reaction was "those are sick man! I want one" Since I have this tiny obssession with shirts with wings on the back (most of my teeshirts have them drawn on with sharpie...)

And then I was rather sad about the whole, "Steampunk Angel" deal on the front. That's what I always hate about the premade wing shirts. They always say Angel on the front. Who wants a shirt printed with the words "Angel" ? I certiantly don't.

Anyway, the shirt could have been done better, but that's just my opinion.
Maybe "Mechanical Girl" or "I Run on Gears" as the front lettering in a less steriotypical script font and a more graphic orientied metal with nails and gears type font.

hear's the link in case any one else is curious;

No one goes on thinkgeek except for, well, geeks, usually the same people who are playing DnD, hardcore videogames, going to conventions, and partaking in the wonderful genres of steampunk and other gothy subtypes.
