After I explained it thoroughly to my mom she thought that it was neat. Of course, she's the type to dress up to go to the Renaissance festivals.

I probably get my interest in steampunk from her genes.

Explaining it to my parents was relatively easy. My cousin managed to get me into steam punk so she had already explained it to her parents and so mine. I just had to... Correct them with a few things. ("No dad, Steampunk is not Anime, no, it's not Manga either."

The aesthetics drew me in at first I saw things of beauty about the whirring brass that I couldn't imagine starting to understand. But I've been wanting to try and start a project for a couple of months. Modding my first goggles after I work on my costume that is nearly finished after being bugged more than once from my dear steam infused relative.

My mum... I don't really know how she feels. She's very supportive of it but I can't help her feeling like this is just another fad while my dad, who's into scifi and fantasy. Struggled to get his head around the idea of Retro Futurism, which I believe sums up steampunk quite well.

I have a father that frolicks more than I do and a mum who forgets what she said ten minutes before. I think it would be a bit of a stretch if either one commented on the 'oddities' of my steampunk lifestyle. Though they have commented occasionally on my penchant for bloomers and the fact that my desk is so piled with clockwork and books so that they can't recall there was an article of furniture there in the first place.

Captain Amaranth
My parents have adopted a sort of "laissez faire" attitude to my steampunkishness.

I took them rather a while to realise, largely because I managed to keep my steampunk interests more or less hidden - and introduce the concepts of it slowly. My dad is pretty much fine with everything (he loves science fiction and the like); but it was awkward explaining to my mum about stuff like airships, why I wanted a pair of goggles, and (most recently) why I spent so much money on a steampunk gas mask. She thinks me odd enough as it is without me trying to tell her how much I love steampunk stuff.
They really don't mind though, they just let me get on with it.

*wince* I had the awkward goggle conversation this week when they asked why I was plotting all the army surplus stores in town on a map. they still don't get it... We're not even going to try the gas mask thing

I remember reading that when it first appeared on McSweeney's... and MY! how it resonated within me; I had a similar experience with a project that examined Jules Verne and traversable wormholes... the greatest grade was not received, but I was very enthusiastic about the subject matter.

I do not have to worry so much about my mother she accepts everything that I do since I'm always into something different I'm considered the most eccentric of my family for my hobbies.

Besides she is the one who got me into sci-fi to begin with, I doubt that she is fully aware that I am into steampunk but if I come up to her with a new sewing project she's delighted about it.

It's my friends who doesn't seem to get it no matter how much I explain it to them or drag them to workshops at cons, it's like everyone is talking in a dead language.

My mom is fine with my interest.
My grandpa would find it cool, and my grandma would just be relieved that I'm not a satanist.

I'm fairly certain my parents don't care about me dressing steampunk. I mean sure they were a little shocked at first, and the goggles are still a little weird to them (and me to be honest, I hardly wear them but mostly because I wear my glasses and not contacts) but I'm dressing quite nice now. Lets face it slacks, a button down shirt, and a vest look pretty damn classy.

classiness is exactly the reason my parents dont mind. Brown Jeans,Doc Martens or Nocona's, a shirt and waistcoat, they think it is great! (despite the goggles!)

My mother threatened that she would be unwilling to trust me with money, were I to buy a bowler and/or top-hat. She still does not seem to understand that nuances of my subculture. As such I have neither, although one hopes I may yet receive one as a present.

How vexing...

I was going to get a bowler at one time, but decided against it. Now i have a nice brown newsboy cap.

I have a newsboy cap too. But I'm dissatisfied with it. I think I got a poorly made one.

My parents think the genre is cool, but then again, I don't really own anything distinctly steampunk-ish. I just love the idea of the genre and am brainstorming a story/manga with a steampunk theme, that's as far as I've gotten. razz
but, if I was far more into it, my Dad would probably have a laid-back attitude toward it, whereas my mom, I'm pretty sure she would be really uncomfortable about the whole idea. (I once tried to buy some WWII aviator goggles (steampunk-ish right?) but she was against it, thinking I would probably be running around at night, doing random military stuff with it. Lol what am I , 5? gonk )

@fire-link: I have to say, steampunk always looks classy on guys, even when they're rocking the scruffy engineer look (have yet to see any mad scientists takes in person, Dr. Steel doesn't count lol ). It's the girls that run the unfortunate risk of looking like tramps, such a odd coincidence I think.

@Cap'n: Tophats should always be gifted, not bought! Bwhahaha

My dad is all up in Vikings and reenactment, so he's not bothered by me being into steampunk and "gothic" (not the emo s**t hot topic stuff) clothing.

My mum on the other... she tend to huff a bit and want me to dress more "modern" aka normal... but she doesn't stop me or my sister (she's into the whole elegant gothic Lolita thing) from being who we are... even if she wished she could.
