My Hollow Gravechylde My Hollow Gravechylde As for Funeral, I said to a lesser extent, because it is a progression from Death/Doom which is a progression from Death. It does lose most of it's Death roots, but it only has minor (if any) influence from Trad. Doom. Yes, it is doomy as in the word "doom", but the music itself doesn't have too much in common with the sound that "doom metal" has. As for origins, I don't see Funeral as evolving from Doom Metal, it does have the aesthetics of Doom Metal, slow tempo, dark atmosphere, but the music itself sounds significantly different from Doom Metal. And saying that it isn't doom, isn't denying the origins, Thrash Metal has Hardcore as an origin, but it's metal not Hardcore, and I've never seen anyone deny that Thrash did get a lot from Hardcore. I just have a personal issue denying the fact that Funeral isn't "doom". Look at some of the other sub genres, they are seemingly less doom than funeral. I'm not trying to say that there's no Doom in it, or that it isn't influenced by Doom. I'm just saying that the foundation of the genre is not that of Doom Metal. Do you mean Trad doom by Doom metal? Yes and No. Yes because regular plain Doom is referred to as Trad., but no because it doesn't have to be 100% True Doom to be considered Doom. For example, Sleep, they are not true doom, but calling them doom is not wrong.

I agree with Grave when he says that death/doom and funeral doom are more rooted in death metal than doom. Of course there is that "doomy" sound, but it is much more firmly rooted to death metal. Listen to Winter or Paradise Lost's first album and then listen to something like Autopsy's Mental Funeral or Asphyx's The Rack. It sounds pretty obvious to me that death/doom was a natural progression from death metal, taking death metal to another extreme: a slower tempo, and then funeral doom taking that extreme to another level. There's no denying that doom may have had some influence on some bands, but I believe it's all a natural progression stemming from death metal and doesn't have as much to do with doom metal.

Wow interesting thread here. From reading here I guess I see where people say that Funeral can be spawned from Death more so than Doom I guess.
