"Because of precisely that...You've seen him for what he used to be and brought him out of his grief... He sort of dropped off the face of the earth When Rose died..." She looked forlornly out the widow. "Lorelee, You may see me as a cold hearted wretch...and I'll admit, I don't treat Richard like a child anymore..." She looked down at the picture of Richard still lying on the table.

"We were close up until his father died... to be honest, I just couldn't look at him...they look just so..." She seemed to have a catch in her throat. "Yes maybe I've handled things wrong with him over the years...but I just want him to man up to his mistakes like his father did... But I do want to see him happy too... I am his mother.." She looked back to Lorey with a smile. "He seems happy with you."

"He has manned up to his mistakes..." Lorey looked at her with a subtle wonder. So, all these years it was just two people not being able to communicate about their grief, because the other put up barriers. Perhaps, she thought, they could get over that.
She looked over her shoulder to see if Richard was coming out of the kitchen, and wondered if he could hear what they were talking about from there. Regardless, she spoke as calmly and clearly as she could despite her nerves.
"He can't fix what happened to Rose, no one can, just like no one can fix what happened to my mother. It's no one's fault but their killers. They were the ones who decided they should die, not us."

Lorey let that hang before addressing her again. "And I've found that whatever Richard wants to do is alright so long as he's safe and happy. We support each other because that's what a family does, because we love each other."

Abigale's face was emotionless as she said nothing after that. IT was about that time Richard reappeared, feeling guilty for leaving his Lorey alone with her too long. His hand was bandaged up, and his eyes looked wet as if he had been trying not to cry. "Dinner smells great mom..." He said softly, but in a casual voice.
She nodded. "I made Roast beef, just the way you like it, as well as every side dish you can imagine..come along to the dining room..." She called over her shoulder as she walked off. Richard said nothing to Lorey, but simply leaned down to kiss her cheek gently, before going to get her a seat for dinner.

Lorey followed, silent. It wasn't until Richard had pulled out a seat for her that she said anything, and that was regarding his hand.
"Did you make sure nothing was stuck in it?" she asked as she gingerly took his wound. "Maybe we should go to the bathroom so I can see..."
She'd had a few injuries on the job because of broken glass from drunken guests, or because a trash bag held unkind contents. If Richard had a clean cut like that, she could deal with it with ease.

Richard jerked his hand away, grimacing. "Ah- Sorry...its just a bit tender...but don't worry dove I got it all out..." He kissed her again sweetly before getting her to sit down. He then took his own seat across from Lorey, while his mother took a seat at the head of the table.

The food did indeed look delicious. Richard remembered many of the foods from his child hood, and smiled fondly at them. "Lorey dear you're going to love this..." He pointed to a fun looking casserole. "I used to eat this stuff till I got sick as a kid..." He smiled boyishly as he scooped himself some.

Abigale stayed silent however, merely smiling to herself as she began scoping out her own food. IT was almsot odd how they both seemed to act as if nothing had happened just moments ago.

Lorey thought she was going to go nuts at the sudden ease. Perhaps they were just performing their dinner manners. Whatever was the case, Lorey smiled and gratefully took a little bit of everything.
The first thing she tried was a cold macaroni salad, which made her eyes light up. Meat was something she had to take in small portions or risk getting sick, but everything else was divine.
Towards the end of the meal, she felt twice her size and was surprised she still fit in her dress.

"That was lovely..."

Richard nodded, patting his full stomach as well. "Yes, absolutely amazing...You haven't lost your touch..." HE said with a classic Richard wink. Abigale smiled and nodded.
"Would you be a dear and take the dishes to the kitchen while Lorey and I have a little girl chat?" She asked as Richard gave Lorey a look but nodded.
"Of curse...he replied as he grabbed what he could, a robot following him to get the rest.

Once alone, Abigale began rubbing the bridge of her nose, very much Like Richard did. "Lorey dear...maybe you can help me...." She said after a moment. "I know I've been wretched to Richard, and he's done some wretched things as well. We're both stubborn fools, something Johnathon pointed out often..." She began sighing softly' My point is...I want to make things up to Richy....But I'm not sure where to begin..."

Hope! Lorey knew things would get better somehow. It went right over her head that she was the catalyst for such a change, but with a heart swelling with happiness, she said as calmly as she could manage,
"I think you should start by saying how much you love him, and maybe apologizing for being the way you have been. If you want to."
Her eyes sent out a plea for her to take the advice. The simplest things could make everything better, she found.

She seemed to think a moment before nodding. "Y-...you're right..." She stood, looking over her shoulder. "Um...Make yourself comfortable...enjoy some coffee cake if you'd like. The robo maid should bring some out to the living room if you don't mind waiting...I'm going to go have a word with him now..." She offered looking terribly uneasy as she turned to leave for the kitchen. But she stopped, looking over her shoulder. "And Lorelee darling...Thank you...." She said with eyes of gratitude before disappearing down the hall.

Lorey nodded mutely, with a smile on her face. She'd done it. She'd told his mother exactly what had to be done for things to get better... now, the only thing left was for Richard to open his heart. There was the true test, and how she hoped he would remember everything she'd said about family, and how you had to stay together.

Lorey relocated herself out to the living room and waited patiently for whatever was going on to happen so she wouldn't have to be alone in a room surrounded by still photographs of the past.

Things were silent for a bit as far as anyone could tell. The maid robot came out with coffee cake, offering it to Lorey quite persistently.
Thigns seeme relatively calm, until muffled yelling could be held. Few words could be made out.
"I'm not father! I didn't want the same -"
"- raise your voice-! - the best for you -!"
It continued like this for quite some time until things became calm again.
Several minutes passed until Richard emerged, looking placid, a small smile on his face. "I'm sorry dove, I didn't mean to keep you waiting..." he said softly coming over to kiss her neck.

Once the yelling started, Lorey got up from her place on the couch to distract herself with pictures. Yelling was something she could put out of her mind so long as she had something else to focus on. First there was a photo of a very young Richard, perhaps about three, with ice cream smudges all over his face. He had the biggest, happiest grin. Lorey wondered if that was the ice cream they had at his little parlor they'd visited.
The next was a prom picture, she supposed. Of course Richard looked dashing in his tuxedo, though she wondered if he had a date for the occasion. Lorey had never gone to a formal. They'd had no money for such a thing, and even if she had by some miracle made it to junior year, she had been forced to drop out anyhow.

The yelling continued, and while Lorey was looking at a picture of Richard's father, something poked her in the backside. With an indignant look, she peered at the little bot still offering her coffee cake.
"No thank you," she said, turning back around, but the little thing kept prodding her with the plate and beeping. "No thank you!" she said louder, moving with wide steps to the other side of the room. Still the little bot came gliding over with the cake, and had somehow procured a small cup of coffee.

Lorey pointed an accusing finger at the contraption, and with pinked cheeks said in her most demanding voice, "Oh for goodness sake, I said no--"
And then Richard came over to peck her neck, making her jump.

"Oh... well, you look happy," she said, inching over behind him as the bot once more made an advance with its dessert.

Richard hardly paid any attention to the robot, merely taking the plate from it, saying thank you and setting it back down on the coffee table as it rolled away indignantly.
"Ah I am..." HE said softly, looking to her. "Thank you." He leaned down giving her a sweet kiss on the lips.

In no time at all, Richard's mother joined them, dabbing her own eyes, as if she had been crying. But she was smiling as well. "Well it was lovely having you two over...you can stop by whenever you like." She offered, going to give Lorey a big hug. "And dear, I hear you're working at the flower shop? If you ever get caught int the rain, or need a place to go for lunch, it's not a far walk nor taxi drive. An old woman like myself would like to have some company occasionally." She smiled warmly, giving her a kiss on the cheek.
She then turned to give Richard a warm hug, whispering something in his ear that made him smile. Before giving him one last hug. He nodded, his eyes looking misty as he gave her a kiss.

"Thanks for dinner mom. We'll be sure to stop by again. Maybe you can visit us. We're staying with friends until we get a place, but I'm sure they'd like to meet you too.." He offered as she nodded and waved him off. Richard said his last goodbyes, taking Lorey's arm and leading her towards the door.

After Lorey had said her good byes and assured her that she would visit when she could, she was led out to the hallway. Richard looked so serene and happy, like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders...
"So?" Lorey asked. "I told you there would be tea and cookies. But... was I right about everything else?"
Lorey looked up to him, filled with curiosity and impatience for an answer.

His answer came in the form of a quick grab of the wrist, deep dip, and passionate kiss. "God I love you..." He said to her with a lovely smile on his face. He then released her, but put an arm about her waist, walking her back to the elevator. "Things went well... very well..." he said giving her a tight squeeze as he waited for the doors to slide open.
